Field of view (FOV) is how much of a scene an optical device or sensor can show from a particular position and orientation. It is usually described as an angle, but binocular specifications may also state the width visible at a set distance. The exact meaning of an FOV number depends on the device and the measurement being used.
What does field of view measure?
FOV describes the extent of the visible scene without moving the camera or optics. An angular FOV is measured in degrees. A linear field specification gives the width of the visible area at a stated distance.

Because the term is used for cameras, binoculars, telescopes and other sensors, check what a specification measures before comparing numbers. A camera value may be horizontal, vertical or diagonal; a binocular value may be real or apparent.
How field of view works in a camera
A camera’s field of view depends on the lens’s focal length and the sensor dimension being considered. With the same sensor, a shorter focal length gives a wider view, while a longer focal length gives a narrower one. Canon explains this relationship in its focal-length guide.

For a rectilinear image, the geometric angle across one chosen sensor dimension can be estimated with:
FOV = 2 × arctan(sensor dimension ÷ (2 × focal length))

Use the sensor dimension that matches the angle you want: its width for horizontal FOV, height for vertical FOV, or diagonal for diagonal FOV. The sensor format and focal length therefore matter when interpreting or comparing a camera’s FOV. This geometric relationship assumes the stated focal length and image-plane dimensions; an optical system may impose additional limits. NASA notes in its astrophotography material that the entire optical field may not be available for imaging at the focal plane.

Binocular specifications use two different FOV measures. Nikon defines real FOV as the actual angle of the visible field, viewed without moving the binoculars. Apparent FOV describes how wide the magnified view appears to the eye. These are related, but they are not interchangeable.

Nikon’s apparent-FOV figures use a method based on ISO 14132-1:2002. In that method:
tan ω′ = Γ × tan ω
Here, Γ is magnification, 2ω is the real FOV, and 2ω′ is the apparent FOV. For example, Nikon’s calculation gives an 8× binocular with a 7.0° real FOV an apparent FOV of 52.1°. That is a worked example using Nikon’s stated formula, not a general value for 8× binoculars. Check the convention used for a particular specification rather than assuming all apparent-FOV figures use the same calculation.

Higher binocular magnification generally narrows the real field, although a wide apparent field can make the magnified view feel broad. A wider real FOV can help when locating fast-moving birds or small celestial objects. Eye relief also matters: if the eye is too far from the eyepiece, including when glasses affect eye position, the viewer may not see the full field.

If you know the angular FOV and viewing distance, you can calculate the approximate visible width:

width = 2D × tan(θ/2)
In this formula, D is the distance to the scene and θ is the angular field. Nikon gives the example of a 7.0° real binocular FOV covering approximately 122 m at a distance of 1,000 m. The width changes with distance; the angle does not.

- Identify the measurement: distinguish angular degrees from a width at a stated distance.
- For binoculars, check real versus apparent: compare the same type of field value and note the calculation convention.
- For cameras, check the direction and setup: compare horizontal with horizontal, vertical with vertical, or diagonal with diagonal, using the relevant sensor dimensions and focal lengths.
- Keep magnification and use in view: especially for binoculars, a field value is more informative when considered alongside magnification and the intended viewing task.
