What evidence can show that life once existed on Mars?

No evidence has yet established that life once existed on Mars. NASA’s strongest current case is a Perseverance sample from Jezero Crater called the Sapphire Canyon core, drilled from the Cheyava Falls rock. It combines an ancient watery setting, organic carbon and patterned mineral features that could be consistent with microbial activity. The same minerals and chemistry can also form through nonbiological processes, so the result is classified as a potential biosignature, not a discovery of life.

To establish ancient Martian life, scientists would need several independent clues that survive detailed testing against geological, chemical, radiation-related and contamination explanations. The question is therefore not whether Mars has produced one intriguing signal, but whether multiple observations point to biology more convincingly than to geology.

What would count as evidence of ancient Martian life?

A persuasive case would begin with a rock formed in a place where liquid water, organic ingredients and an energy source existed together. That establishes habitability—the possibility that organisms could have lived there—but not inhabitation. Scientists then look for material that was preserved well enough to retain chemical or structural traces of organisms.

The strongest argument would combine several lines of evidence:

  • Geological context: sediments or minerals formed in a stable watery environment, rather than an isolated chemical deposit with no plausible habitat.
  • Preservation: clay, silica or carbonate that could trap organic compounds, textures or mineral relationships for billions of years.
  • Organic chemistry: carbon-containing molecules arranged in patterns that are difficult to produce without biology. Carbon alone is insufficient because abiotic chemistry also creates organics.
  • Textures and mineral associations: structures resembling microbial colonies, reaction fronts or mineral pairings known to result from metabolism on Earth.
  • Isotopic patterns: unusual ratios of carbon or other elements that biology could preferentially concentrate. An isotope resemblance is persuasive only if competing physical and chemical explanations fail.
  • Independent confirmation: different instruments, samples or laboratories detecting related signals without relying on the same uncertain assumption.

Every candidate must also survive tests for water–rock reactions, radiation chemistry, volcanic or hydrothermal processes, later alteration and contamination from spacecraft or Earth.

Why Cheyava Falls is the leading current candidate

An ancient river setting

Perseverance encountered Cheyava Falls in July 2024 in the Bright Angel formation beside Neretva Vallis, an ancient valley that carried water into Jezero Crater. NASA describes Neretva Vallis as about a quarter-mile (400 meters) wide. The rock itself is approximately 3.2 feet by 2 feet (1 meter by 0.6 meters), and the rover drilled the Sapphire Canyon core from it in July 2024.

This setting matters because Jezero preserves a lake-and-river system. Sediment deposited by flowing or standing water can concentrate organic material and create chemical gradients that microorganisms might use for energy. Context raises the plausibility of life; it does not demonstrate that organisms were present.

What the rover observed

NASA reports that the sedimentary rock contains clay and silt, organic carbon, sulfur, oxidized iron and phosphorus. The sample also displays small patterned reaction fronts nicknamed “leopard spots.” Instrument readings associate those patterns with vivianite, a hydrated iron phosphate, and greigite, an iron sulfide.

On Earth, vivianite and greigite can occur where microbes alter iron and sulfur compounds in water-rich sediments. A proposed biological interpretation is that reactions involving the sediment and organic matter supplied energy to microbial communities, leaving the mineral pattern behind. The appeal of Cheyava Falls is the convergence: a watery environment, fine-grained sediment, carbon-based compounds and minerals associated with reactions that biology can drive.

Why the minerals do not prove life

The same mineral combination can arise without organisms. NASA identifies possible abiotic routes involving sustained high temperatures, acidic conditions or organic compounds binding to minerals. The Cheyava Falls rock shows no evidence of high temperatures or acidic conditions, which makes some alternatives less attractive, but it does not eliminate every nonbiological pathway.

Perseverance’s project scientist Katie Stack Morgan summarized the standard required for such a claim: “Astrobiological claims, particularly related to the potential discovery of past extraterrestrial life, require extraordinary evidence.” She also said that although abiotic explanations appear less likely given the findings, they cannot be ruled out.

Its present scientific status

A year-long peer-review process preceded publication in Nature on September 10, 2025. Peer review means other scientists examined the methods and interpretation; it does not determine whether the minerals were biological. NASA’s September 2025 Mars report says detailed study after return to Earth will be needed. By that report, Perseverance had collected 27 rock cores since landing at Jezero in February 2021.

Other observations that inform the search

Ancient water and preservation potential

Curiosity measurements show that Gale Crater once held a lake with chemical building blocks and energy sources relevant to habitability. At Jezero, Perseverance’s Bunsen Peak sample contains water-formed carbonate and silica considered promising for trapping and preserving organic material. Carbonate and silica can protect chemical signatures from later alteration, making them useful targets for laboratory analysis.

These observations answer an important preliminary question—whether Mars once offered environments where life could have survived—but they do not show that any organism actually lived there.

Organic molecules in Gale Crater

Curiosity detected organic molecules in roughly three-billion-year-old Gale Crater sedimentary rocks. NASA’s 2018 report described at least 10 parts per million or more of organic carbon in the analyzed mudstone samples, about 100 times greater than earlier detections of organic carbon at Mars’ surface. The compounds included thiophenes, benzene, toluene and small carbon chains.

Those names describe carbon chemistry, not fossils. Organics can be delivered by meteorites, produced by water–rock reactions or created by radiation acting on carbon-bearing material. NASA said Curiosity could not determine the source of the compounds. The Gale measurements therefore establish preservation of organic chemistry, not biological origin, and their concentration must not be transferred to the Cheyava Falls sample.

Seasonal methane

Curiosity measured seasonal changes in methane in Gale Crater over nearly three Martian years. Methane is interesting because terrestrial microbes produce much of it, yet geological processes can also release it. NASA lists water–rock chemistry as one possible source and says a biological origin cannot be ruled out.

Methane is especially difficult to interpret because its amount can vary as gases move through soil, react with minerals or break down under radiation. Without a linked source region, diagnostic isotope pattern and supporting chemistry, a methane fluctuation remains a clue rather than a biosignature.

A carbon-isotope pattern

Curiosity also found samples enriched in a form of carbon associated with biological processing on Earth. NASA’s 2022 analysis presented three explanations that fit the observations: a biological scenario involving methane, and two nonbiological scenarios. More measurements are needed to distinguish them.

Isotopes are valuable because organisms can favor lighter or heavier atoms during metabolism. They are not unique fingerprints, however; atmospheric loss, photochemical reactions, volcanic processes and water–rock chemistry can produce similar fractionation. Paul Mahaffy, formerly the principal investigator of Curiosity’s SAM chemistry laboratory, called the results “tantalizingly interesting” while emphasizing that more evidence would be needed to identify life.

The ALH84001 meteorite caution

ALH84001, a Martian meteorite found on Earth, became famous after a 1996 claim that microscopic structures and organic material might be fossils. A later study summarized by NASA Astrobiology, updated in 2026, attributed the organic material to geochemical interaction between water and rock rather than biology.

The episode illustrates why a suggestive shape or organic compound cannot carry the case alone. Andrew Steele, lead author of the geochemical study, said such nonbiological reactions create a background pool of organic carbon from which life could have evolved and must be considered when searching for ancient life.

How scientists compare competing explanations

Researchers can score a candidate signal by asking the same questions of both biological and abiotic hypotheses:

Question Why it matters Cheyava Falls example
Was there a plausible habitat? Water, nutrients and usable energy are prerequisites for life. Bright Angel sediment formed in the ancient Jezero river system.
Could the evidence be preserved? Fragile organics and textures need protection from radiation and alteration. Clay and fine sediment may preserve chemical signatures.
How many signals converge? Independent observations are harder to explain as coincidence. Organic carbon, patterned fronts, vivianite and greigite occur together.
How biologically specific is the signal? A feature made only, or almost only, by life is stronger than a common mineral. Vivianite and greigite can be biological, but also have abiotic routes.
Can alternatives be tested? A hypothesis gains strength when measurements can discriminate among causes. Returned-sample laboratory work could test mineral chemistry, organics and isotopes at higher resolution.
Is contamination plausible? Earth material or spacecraft residues could mimic a biosignature. Independent sample handling and blanks are needed before assigning a biological source.

What returned-sample analysis would add

Rover instruments are limited by mass, power, sample preparation and the number of measurements they can perform in place. A laboratory on Earth can make thin sections, separate minerals, measure trace elements and isotopes at much finer scales, and apply several techniques to the same grain.

For the Sapphire Canyon core, scientists would want to determine whether organic compounds are enclosed within minerals or merely coating their surfaces; whether vivianite and greigite formed at the same time as the patterned fronts; whether isotopic ratios vary in a way expected from metabolism; and whether heating, acidity or fluid chemistry can reproduce the features without biology. They would also compare the core with unpatterned rock from the same formation and with terrestrial minerals formed in known abiotic environments.

A convincing result would not be one spectacular photograph. It would be a reproducible package of morphology, mineralogy, organic chemistry and isotopes whose biological explanation is both coherent and more economical than the alternatives.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say today

  • Mars clearly had ancient environments with liquid water and ingredients relevant to life.
  • Some Martian rocks preserve organic carbon and chemical patterns worth investigating.
  • Cheyava Falls is the strongest current candidate because several potentially relevant observations occur in one water-associated rock.
  • Organics, methane, isotope signatures and mineral textures each have nonbiological explanations.
  • No observation reported so far has crossed the threshold from potential biosignature to confirmed ancient life.

The scientifically defensible answer to “Has NASA found life on Mars?” is therefore no—not yet. The evidence shows that Mars was once habitable and may preserve signals that could eventually reveal whether it was inhabited. Cheyava Falls gives researchers a particularly testable target, but its biological origin remains unresolved until further analyses can rule out credible abiotic explanations.
