Etsy is not an acronym: its name has no established word-by-word expansion. The company is an online marketplace connecting independent sellers with buyers, and its rules cover more than handmade and vintage goods. Etsy’s own 2025 filing reports 86.5 million active buyers and 5.6 million active sellers on its marketplace at year-end, but those figures describe Etsy—not the entire handmade or vintage economy.
Does Etsy stand for anything?
No. “Etsy” is not a recognized acronym or abbreviation with an official expansion. In a secondary account of co-founder Rob Kalin’s explanation, he wanted a nonsense word that could become a brand from scratch and chose the name after hearing sounds while watching Federico Fellini’s 8½. Retellings sometimes associate the sounds with phrases such as “oh, yes” or “what if,” but these are reported associations, not a settled translation or etymology. Etsy’s official materials do not give a linguistic definition. CBS News’ account of the origin story is secondary reporting.

What is Etsy, and what can people buy there?
Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, Etsy describes itself as “the global marketplace for unique and creative goods.” That is company positioning; in practical terms, Etsy provides a marketplace and technology for independent sellers to reach buyers. Sellers manage their own inventory and orders, and buyers purchase from those sellers rather than necessarily from Etsy itself. For a question about a particular item, Etsy directs buyers to contact its seller. Etsy’s About page and Help Center explain the company’s description and marketplace model.
Etsy’s Seller Policy, effective July 9, 2026, says items must be made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by the seller. Its Creativity Standards describe those categories as follows:

- Made by the seller: Physical items made by the seller, including with personal or computerized tools.
- Designed by the seller: Seller-original designs produced by a third party or sold as digital downloads.
- Handpicked by the seller: Vintage items and curated collections.
- Sourced by the seller: Items that enable creativity, including craft and party supplies, as well as personalized items.
So “handmade and vintage” is an incomplete shorthand. A listing’s presence on Etsy does not by itself establish that it is handmade: eligible listings also include original designs, vintage finds, and sourced supplies. Etsy requires sellers to describe accurately how an item was made, by whom, and where it ships from; disclose shop members and production partners; and generally use their own listing photos or video, subject to policy exceptions. Relevant listings must disclose when an item was created using AI. See the Seller Policy and Creativity Standards.
How large is Etsy’s marketplace?
Etsy, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K reports the following figures for the Etsy marketplace. They are not measures of the whole handmade or vintage market, and Etsy marketplace gross merchandise sales (GMS) should not be confused with the company’s consolidated GMS, which included other marketplaces during the reported period.

These figures show Etsy’s documented scale as a marketplace. They do not reveal how much Etsy caused any individual seller’s income to grow or establish its effect on the broader handmade and vintage sectors. The figures are from Etsy, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 19, 2026.
What does Etsy’s role mean for sellers and buyers?
A route to market, not a guarantee of sales
Etsy gives independent sellers a shared marketplace where buyers can search and discover goods. Its 2025 filing describes unique seller goods, search and discovery, human connections, and brand trust as parts of its differentiation. Etsy’s Q2 2026 shareholder letter says it aims to make seller identity and craftsmanship more visible. These are the company’s stated strategy and beliefs, not independent evidence that a seller will earn more or that a buyer will have a better outcome.

Etsy is also one sales channel among many. The company identifies large online marketplaces, national retailers, local consignment and vintage stores, social commerce, resale marketplaces, and craft fairs as competitors. Sellers may use other venues as well, so Etsy is not an exclusive route to buyers. The relevant choice depends on matters such as fees and tools, buyer reach and discoverability, category and policy fit, and how a seller wants to manage fulfillment and customer relationships. The filing does not provide comparative performance data that would establish Etsy as better or worse than those alternatives.
Rules and trust have limits
Etsy sets listing policies and reports enforcement activity as part of managing its marketplace. Its 2025 Transparency Report covers policy enforcement, intellectual-property takedowns, order issues, and requests for member information during January through December 2025. Those disclosures show that oversight is part of the platform’s operation; they do not prove that every listing is authentic or compliant. Etsy’s 2025 Transparency Report documents the topics it reports.

What do Etsy sellers pay?
Etsy, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K reports these seller fees. They are company-reported figures from that filing, not a guarantee of the terms that apply to every seller today. Payment-processing rates vary by the country of the seller’s bank account, and rules and fees can change; check Etsy’s current seller terms before opening a shop or calculating margins.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Fee | Reported amount | How it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Listing | $0.20 | Per item |
| Transaction | 6.5% | On completed Etsy marketplace transactions, including shipping charged |
| Offsite Ads | 12% or 15% | On attributed sales; rate depends on seller sales volume |
| Payment processing | Typically 3.0% to 6.5%, plus a flat fee per order | Rate and flat fee depend on the seller’s bank-account country |
These charges affect the economics of selling through Etsy, but the filing’s reported rates alone do not determine whether a particular shop will be profitable. Sellers need to account for their own materials, labor, shipping, taxes, and other costs alongside the applicable marketplace fees. The figures are reported in Etsy, Inc.’s 2025 Form 10-K.

What Etsy says it stands for
Etsy’s Q2 2026 shareholder letter states: “At our best, Etsy stands for creativity, craftsmanship, and connection—it’s our core differentiation.” This describes the company’s stated identity and strategy, not a meaning encoded in the letters of its name. The letter also announced a $10 million Craft Catalyst Initiative with the Center for Craft to support American craft communities. That is a dated company announcement, not evidence by itself of a measured change across the craft sector. Etsy, Inc.’s Q2 2026 shareholder letter, published August 5, 2026, provides the company’s statement and initiative details.
