A Starlink installation needs a satellite terminal (dish), power supply, cables, a base, and—on many kits—a Wi‑Fi router. The exact box contents depend on the hardware model. For example, the Standard 4 X package includes Router 3 and two specified power/data cables, while Starlink lists no router in Mini, Performance, Performance (Gen 2), and Enterprise kits.

Install the terminal where the Starlink app’s Check for Obstructions tool finds a clear view of the sky. Branches, poles, roofs, and other objects in the terminal’s view can interrupt service. A base is adequate for a ground test or a suitable unobstructed site; if the ground view is blocked, use a compatible roof, pole, or wall mount after verifying it fits your exact kit.

What equipment does Starlink require?

Every Starlink system has four functional parts: the outdoor terminal that communicates with satellites, indoor power equipment, the cables linking the two, and a way to support the terminal. Many kits also include a Wi‑Fi router. Starlink’s general kit description lists the following:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Starlink terminal: the outdoor dish or antenna.
  • Power supply: the power unit that feeds the terminal and, where supplied, the router.
  • Cables: model-specific cables for the terminal, router, and mains connection.
  • Base: a supplied support for ground-level placement or initial testing.
  • Wi‑Fi router: included with many kits, but not every model.

That list is a category-level description, not a universal packing list. Starlink directs customers to the setup guide for the precise hardware model because the router, cable arrangement, base style, and power connections differ. The model guide is therefore part of the equipment decision: it tells you what should be in the carton and how those pieces are intended to connect.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Think of the kit as a matched system rather than a collection of interchangeable parts. The dish, power unit, cables, support, and router may look similar across product families, but a connection sequence or accessory that is correct for one model is not automatically correct for another. Check the model name on the order, label, or setup material before you buy anything extra or plan a permanent installation.

What comes in my Starlink kit?

Standard kit contents

The broad Starlink kit description covers the terminal, power supply, cables, base, and Wi‑Fi router. The router is explicitly excluded from the Mini, Performance, Performance (Gen 2), and Enterprise kits; Starlink says it may need to be purchased separately for those products. Do not assume that a router shown in a photo or included in another model’s guide is in your box.

This router difference affects your setup plan. If your kit includes a router, the supplied cable diagram normally shows where the terminal, router, power supply, and mains cable connect. If your kit is one of the models listed without router hardware, identify the supported router arrangement before you decide where networking equipment will sit. A missing router is not necessarily a packing error; it may be an intentional part of that product’s contents.

Standard 4 X contents

The Standard 4 X setup guide gives a concrete example of a current package. It lists:

Item Standard 4 X specification
Outdoor terminal Standard dish
Support Kickstand
Router Router 3
Terminal cable 15 m (49.2 ft) Starlink cable
AC cable 1.5 m (4.92 ft) AC power cable
Power equipment Power supply unit

Those lengths and components apply to the Standard 4 X guide only. They are not a general specification for every Starlink terminal. The 15 m terminal cable can influence where you put the router and power supply, while the 1.5 m AC cable influences how close the power equipment must be to an appropriate mains outlet. Measure the actual route, including the entry point and any turns, rather than assuming the nominal length will work in every building.

How the Standard 4 X connects

For Standard 4 X, the supplied Starlink cable runs from the dish to router port 1. The AC power cable connects the power supply as shown in that model’s guide. Other kits can use a different router, port layout, or power arrangement, so follow the guide that names your hardware rather than copying this sequence to another model.

Do not force a plug into a port simply because it appears to fit, and do not substitute a cable from another kit without confirmation. The safest sequence is to identify each labeled component, follow the matching diagram, and leave cable routing flexible until the terminal has completed its initial setup and alignment process.

How to identify the right parts before opening a mount package

Locate the exact model name on the equipment label, order confirmation, or setup material. Then compare every accessory with that model’s guide. This check prevents two common errors: buying a mount with the wrong interface and planning a cable route around a cable that is not supplied in your kit.

  • Confirm whether your model includes a Wi‑Fi router. Mini, Performance, Performance (Gen 2), and Enterprise are listed without one.
  • Check the supplied base or kickstand and whether it is intended for your planned placement.
  • Record the supplied cable type and length before deciding where the router and power supply will sit.
  • Match any additional mount to the exact terminal model; a mount that fits one Starlink product should not be assumed to fit another.
  • Verify the power arrangement in the model guide instead of relying on a picture of a different kit.

Make a simple inventory before installation: terminal, support, router status, terminal cable, AC cable, power supply, and any included adapters or documentation. If an expected item is absent, compare the box with the model-specific contents list first. That distinction helps you separate a genuine missing component from a kit that was designed to omit a router or use a different arrangement.

Where should I install my Starlink?

Choose the location by using the Starlink app’s Check for Obstructions tool at the actual site. The app evaluates the proposed position for the sky view the terminal needs while satellites move overhead. Starlink specifically identifies tree branches, poles, and roofs as obstructions that can cause service interruptions.

Run the check from each realistic candidate location before drilling, bolting, or routing cable. A generic picture of an open sky is not a substitute for the app result: a position that looks clear from one angle can still have an obstruction in the terminal’s field of view. Check the exact spot where the terminal will sit, not merely the nearby yard, roof, or wall.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no universal clearance number in the installation guidance that can replace this site check. Trees grow, rooflines differ, and a pole or branch can occupy only part of the relevant view. Use the app’s result for your property and repeat the check if you move the terminal to a different corner, elevation, or mounting surface.

What a suitable location looks like

  • The app reports a clear enough view for the proposed position.
  • The terminal can sit securely on its supplied base or on a verified compatible mount.
  • The cable can reach the router and power equipment without forcing a bend, strain, or improvised extension.
  • The location allows you to protect the cable and equipment from accidental damage during normal use.
  • The position leaves enough practical room to complete the model’s connection and alignment steps before you conceal or secure the cable run.

Starlink’s installation guidance summarizes the reason for this care: “Your Starlink needs a clear view of the sky so it can stay connected with satellites as they move overhead.” A clear result is not just a preference for a better view; it is the condition Starlink identifies for maintaining satellite connectivity.

Ground-level setup versus an elevated permanent installation

The supplied base or kickstand is useful when you are testing service, placing the terminal on suitable ground, or already have an unobstructed site. Elevation becomes relevant when nearby objects block the app’s view or when you want a fixed installation with better cable protection and long-term reliability.

Choice When it fits Equipment decision Trade-off
Ground-level base or kickstand The app finds a clear view at ground level, or you are testing the service Use the supplied base; no additional mount is automatically required It may not clear nearby branches, poles, or roofs
Elevated roof, pole, or wall installation Ground-level obstructions remain, or you need a permanent position Buy a mount only after confirming compatibility with the exact kit Requires a suitable mounting point and a deliberate cable-protection plan

A mount is therefore optional and site-dependent, not a mandatory part of every Starlink purchase. Starlink describes the included base as suitable for ground-level installation or a quick test, while permanent mounting is associated with performance, cable protection, and long-term reliability when the site calls for it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ground placement is the simplest starting point because it lets you test the service and compare locations without immediately committing to a fixed attachment. It is appropriate only when the base is stable, the app shows a suitable view, and the cable can be protected from avoidable damage. If those conditions are not met, moving the terminal higher may solve the obstruction problem, but the mount must be selected for the exact kit.

An elevated installation is not automatically better. It adds a mounting point and a longer-term cable route to your plan. Choose it when the app shows that elevation improves the view, when the ground position remains blocked, or when a permanent location provides meaningful protection and reliability benefits. Do not buy a roof, pole, or wall accessory solely because it is marketed as Starlink-compatible; confirm the terminal model and interface first.

How do I set up Starlink?

  1. Identify the kit. Read the model name and open its matching setup guide. Use that guide to verify the terminal, base, router status, cable types, and power arrangement.
  2. Inventory the box. Compare the physical parts with the guide. Record whether a router is included and note the lengths of the supplied cables before selecting indoor equipment locations.
  3. Check candidate locations. In the Starlink app, open Check for Obstructions and scan each proposed position. Do this before installing a permanent mount.
  4. Choose temporary or permanent support. Use the included base or kickstand for a clear ground-level test. If the app shows that elevation is needed, select a roof, pole, or wall mount that is confirmed for the exact terminal.
  5. Place the terminal. Set it on the supplied base or install it on the compatible mount. Keep the position adjustable until the initial check and alignment are complete.
  6. Connect the hardware. Follow the model-specific cable diagram. On Standard 4 X, connect the supplied Starlink cable from the dish to router port 1, then connect the AC power cable and power supply as shown in the guide.
  7. Power up and complete alignment. Some Starlink models level themselves automatically; others provide an alignment tool in the app. Use the procedure for your model rather than manually forcing the terminal into a position intended for another design.
  8. Test before securing the route. Confirm that the terminal, router (if supplied or separately required), and power equipment operate together before hiding, sealing, or permanently fastening cables.

Keep the model guide available during setup. The general kit description cannot tell you which port, cable, or alignment method your particular terminal uses. If the app identifies a problem after power-up, return to the obstruction check and model-specific alignment instructions before changing hardware.

How to plan the cable and power locations

Cable planning should happen after you know the exact kit and before you commit to a mount. Start at the terminal and trace the supplied Starlink cable to the intended router connection. Then trace the AC cable from the power supply to the available power location. The Standard 4 X example provides a 15 m terminal cable and a 1.5 m AC power cable, but another model may provide different lengths or a different power arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Place the router and power supply where the supplied cables can reach without tension or an improvised extension. Avoid a route that leaves the cable exposed to routine foot traffic, sharp edges, or accidental pulling. Starlink’s installation guidance connects permanent mounting with cable protection and long-term reliability, so cable protection is part of the location decision, not an afterthought.

Keep the route flexible while you test. A position that looks ideal may produce an obstruction result that requires moving the terminal. Finalize the route only after the app check, connection sequence, and alignment method for your model have all been completed successfully.

How to decide whether you need a mount

Use the supplied base when

  • The app finds a clear sky view at the proposed ground location.
  • You are performing an initial service test before choosing a permanent position.
  • The base can remain stable and the cable can be routed without exposure to avoidable damage.
  • You want to compare more than one candidate location before committing to a roof, pole, or wall attachment.

Consider an elevated mount when

  • The obstruction check shows branches, poles, a roofline, or another object blocking the ground-level view.
  • Moving the terminal higher provides a clearer result in the app.
  • You want a fixed installation and need a planned route that protects the cable over time.
  • The supplied base cannot provide a stable, practical position at the site you selected.

Verify the terminal model before purchasing. Starlink’s guidance supports roof, pole, and wall locations as possible solutions, but it does not make one mount universal across all kits. Accessory availability and compatibility can change, so check the current listing and the model documentation when you are ready to buy.

Common installation mistakes and fixes

Assuming every box includes a router

Symptom: You open a Mini, Performance, Performance (Gen 2), or Enterprise kit and cannot find a router. Fix: Check that model’s contents list; those kits are identified as not including Wi‑Fi router hardware. Obtain the model-appropriate router separately if your network plan requires one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing a site by eye

Symptom: The terminal connects intermittently even though the location appears open. Fix: Run Check for Obstructions at the exact position. Branches, poles, and roof edges can interrupt satellite visibility even when they are outside a casual glance.

Buying a mount before confirming the model

Symptom: The mount cannot attach securely or does not match the terminal interface. Fix: Identify the exact kit first and verify accessory compatibility in the corresponding Starlink documentation.

Using the wrong cable plan

Symptom: The router or power supply cannot be positioned where planned. Fix: Measure the supplied cable for your model before fixing the terminal in place. Standard 4 X, for example, specifies a 15 m Starlink cable and a 1.5 m AC power cable; another kit may provide different lengths or a different arrangement.

Following another model’s alignment instructions

Symptom: The terminal is manually adjusted even though the model is designed to level itself, or the app’s alignment step is skipped. Fix: Use the alignment method stated for your model—automatic leveling on some units, an app alignment tool on others.

Securing cables too early

Symptom: The terminal must be moved after the obstruction check, but the cable has already been hidden or tightly fixed. Fix: Complete the location, connection, and alignment checks first, then finalize the route.

Treating a temporary test as a permanent installation

Symptom: A kickstand test location is left in place even though it is exposed or does not provide the best long-term cable protection. Fix: Use the base for testing, then reassess whether a compatible elevated mount is warranted for permanence and protection.

What to verify before making the installation permanent

  1. Confirm the app reports an acceptable sky view from the final position.
  2. Confirm every part in the cable path belongs to the same kit and reaches the intended router and power locations.
  3. Confirm the base or mount is compatible and stable for that terminal.
  4. Confirm the router is actually included if your setup depends on it; otherwise plan for the model’s separate-router requirement.
  5. Confirm the power arrangement and port sequence from the exact model guide.
  6. Run the system using the model guide before sealing or hiding cable runs, so a change in location remains possible if the obstruction check or alignment result is poor.
  7. Recheck the installation after moving from a temporary base to a permanent mount; a different height or position can produce a different app result.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Starlink kit include a Wi‑Fi router?

No. Starlink’s general kit information lists a router for many kits but explicitly excludes router hardware from Mini, Performance, Performance (Gen 2), and Enterprise kits. Check the exact model contents and plan for a separate router when the guide says one is not included.

What is included with Standard 4 X?

The Standard 4 X guide lists the Standard dish, kickstand, Router 3, a 15 m (49.2 ft) Starlink cable, a 1.5 m (4.92 ft) AC power cable, and a power supply unit. Those specifications apply to Standard 4 X and should not be generalized to every Starlink product.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I install Starlink on the ground?

Yes, when the supplied base or kickstand is stable and the Starlink app finds a clear enough view at that location. Starlink describes the included base as suitable for ground-level installation or a quick test. Move to an elevated installation if ground-level obstructions remain.

Do I need to buy a roof or pole mount?

Not automatically. A mount is an optional, site-dependent purchase. Consider one when the app shows that branches, poles, a roofline, or another obstruction blocks the ground view, or when a permanent position would improve cable protection and reliability. Verify compatibility with the exact kit.

How do I know where to put the dish?

Open the Starlink app’s Check for Obstructions tool and test the actual proposed position. Do not rely on a generic diagram or visual judgment alone. The app result should guide the choice among ground, roof, pole, and wall locations.

Can I use the cable from another Starlink kit?

Do not assume that cables are interchangeable. Cable types, lengths, ports, and power arrangements vary by model. Follow the setup guide for your terminal and use the specified connection sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do all Starlink terminals align the same way?

No. Starlink indicates that some models level themselves automatically, while others use an alignment tool in the app. Follow the instructions for your model and do not copy another terminal’s alignment procedure.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

When should I permanently secure the cables?

Wait until the obstruction check, connection sequence, power-up, and alignment steps work from the final position. Keeping the route adjustable during testing makes it easier to move the terminal if the app identifies a problem.

The practical answer

Start with the exact model guide, not a generic shopping list. Expect a terminal, power supply, cables, and a base; expect a router only when that model includes one. Use the Starlink app’s obstruction check to choose the site. Keep the supplied base for a clear ground-level test or installation, and move to a compatible roof, pole, or wall mount only when the app shows that elevation is needed or a permanent, protected installation makes sense.

Frequently Asked Questions

What equipment does Starlink generally require?

The broad kit description includes a terminal, power supply, cables, and a base, with a Wi‑Fi router included in many but not all models. Confirm the exact contents in the setup guide for your kit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which Starlink kits do not include a router?

Starlink lists Mini, Performance, Performance (Gen 2), and Enterprise kits without Wi‑Fi router hardware. A separate, model-appropriate router may be needed.

Where should I install the Starlink terminal?

Use the Starlink app’s Check for Obstructions tool at the actual proposed location. Choose a position with a clear enough sky view, whether that is on the ground, roof, pole, or wall.

Is a Starlink mount included or required?

The supplied base or kickstand supports ground-level setup or testing. An elevated mount is optional and site-dependent; verify compatibility with your exact terminal before buying one.

What cable lengths come with Standard 4 X?

The Standard 4 X guide specifies a 15 m (49.2 ft) Starlink cable and a 1.5 m (4.92 ft) AC power cable. Other kits may differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should Standard 4 X be connected?

Connect the supplied Starlink cable from the dish to router port 1, then connect the AC power cable and power supply as shown in the Standard 4 X guide.

Why can an apparently open location still have interruptions?

Tree branches, poles, roof edges, and other objects can obstruct the terminal’s view even when the site looks open. Run the app’s obstruction check at the exact position.

Should I secure the cables immediately?

No. First complete the obstruction check, model-specific connections, power-up, and alignment. Finalize the cable route only after the system works from the chosen position.

The Bottom Line

Verify the exact Starlink model first. Its guide determines whether a router is included, which cables and ports to use, and how alignment works. Use the app’s Check for Obstructions tool at the real installation point. The supplied base is enough for a clear ground-level test; choose a compatible roof, pole, or wall mount only when elevation or permanent cable protection is needed.
