You can start VTubing with four essentials: a computer that runs your chosen avatar software, a compatible avatar, one face-tracking device (a webcam or supported smartphone), and a microphone if you will speak or use audio-based lip sync. Streaming software such as OBS is added when you are ready to broadcast or record.
The exact kit depends on whether your avatar is 2D or 3D and which tracking software you choose. The checklist below describes a VTube Studio setup, so verify another program’s requirements before buying equipment.

The minimum equipment list
Start by separating things that are required from things that merely improve convenience. VTube Studio can animate a Live2D avatar with either webcam tracking or supported phone tracking; it does not require a capture card, green screen, second monitor, or premium camera for every beginner.

Choose the avatar format before you buy hardware
2D Live2D models
VTube Studio supports models made for Live2D Cubism. A model normally consists of prepared artwork and a rig that maps parameters such as eye position, blinking, mouth opening and head angle to your tracking input. You can create those assets yourself or commission art and rigging; commissioning is a creative-services expense, not a specific hardware purchase.
3D VRoid or VRM models
VTube Studio does not support VRoid or VRM models. If you intend to use a 3D avatar, select software designed for that format first; the VTube Studio manual points users toward VSeeFace as an option. This decision should come before paying for a model, because a model made for one format cannot simply be imported into the other.
Why there is no single “professional” equipment list
Setups vary with avatar format, computer workload, tracking method and production style. A 2025 interview study by Kim, Lee, Jun, Shin and Lee included 16 professional VTubers, but that is an interview sample rather than a population estimate. It cannot establish that most creators own a particular camera, microphone or computer.

Computer requirements for a VTube Studio setup
VTube Studio’s Steam listing publishes the following figures. They are the application’s stated requirements, not universal specifications for every avatar or streaming workflow, and the listing can change.
| Platform | Minimum listed requirements | Recommended listed requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | 64-bit system; 4 GB RAM; at least 2 GB dedicated VRAM; 3 GB storage | 6 GB RAM; at least 4 GB dedicated VRAM; 4 GB storage |
| Mac | 4 GB memory; 2 GB VRAM; 3 GB storage | 6 GB memory; 4 GB VRAM; 4 GB storage |
These figures describe running VTube Studio itself. Streaming, recording, browser sources, games, filters and high-resolution video can add load, so a computer that meets the minimum may still need lower quality settings when several applications run together. Check your operating system, graphics hardware and free storage against the current listing before purchasing or upgrading.
What to check on an existing computer
- Confirm whether Windows is 64-bit if you plan to use the Windows version.
- Find the amount of dedicated graphics memory, not only shared system memory.
- Leave more free storage than the application’s listed minimum if you will save recordings.
- Test the avatar and streaming software together; a successful application launch does not guarantee smooth recording.
Webcam tracking: the simplest dedicated camera route
The official VTube Studio manual says, “Any webcam will do, better picture quality means better tracking.” It generally recommends 1280×720 resolution or higher for good eye and blink tracking and says 15–30 frames per second is sufficient. That makes a basic 720p USB webcam a reasonable search description when you do not already own a suitable camera; the documentation does not establish a particular brand or premium model as necessary.

How to position a webcam
- Place the camera near eye level, centered on your face.
- Keep your face fully visible and avoid a view blocked by a monitor bezel or microphone.
- Use even front lighting. Strong backlighting can make facial features harder for tracking to distinguish.
- Set the camera to 1280×720 or higher and 15–30 FPS, then adjust exposure so your eyes and mouth remain clear.
- Run the software’s calibration or tracking preview while making neutral expressions, blinking and turning your head.
With this route, you do not need the mobile VTube Studio app. The webcam connects directly to the computer running the desktop software.
Phone tracking: when a smartphone is the better choice
VTube Studio also accepts tracking data from a compatible phone. The manual lists Face ID iPhones and iPads as compatible examples, along with some Apple devices using an A12 chip or newer even without Face ID. It says recent Android devices may work while older devices may not. DenchiSoft specifies an Android phone that supports Google ARCore, so check the current app documentation for your exact model before buying a phone for this purpose.
What phone tracking changes
- You need the mobile VTube Studio app and a way to keep the phone stable and aimed at your face.
- The phone’s supported facial sensors or camera processing supply tracking data while the computer runs the avatar.
- Compatibility is model-specific; “Android” or “iPhone” alone is not a guarantee.
- An iPhone is not mandatory. Use a webcam if you already have one or if your phone is not confirmed compatible.
VTube Studio’s own manual places webcam tracking below iOS and above Android in its comparative ordering. That is vendor guidance, not an independent benchmark, so treat it as a directional choice rather than a promise about every device.

| Tracking route | Best starting point when… | Main check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Webcam | You want a one-device computer setup or already own a camera | At least 1280×720 is generally recommended; 15–30 FPS is sufficient |
| iPhone or iPad | You own a supported Face ID device or compatible Apple A12-or-newer model | Confirm the exact model and current mobile-app support |
| Android phone | You have a recent ARCore-capable device | Confirm Google ARCore support and app compatibility; older phones may not work |
Microphone: essential for voice, separate from face tracking
A microphone serves two jobs: it records your spoken audio and can provide the input for VTube Studio’s audio-based lip-sync feature. It is not the camera used for facial tracking. You can therefore have working eye and head movement with a webcam or phone before adding a microphone, but you need a microphone for spoken streams and for audio-driven mouth movement.
The cited VTube Studio documentation establishes the feature requirement, not a particular microphone model, pickup pattern or sound-quality threshold. Start with a device that your computer recognizes reliably, then monitor for electrical noise, room echo and clipping. A headset microphone can be a practical first step; a separate USB microphone is an upgrade in placement flexibility, not a prerequisite stated by the software.

Equipment that is conditional
- Capture card: relevant when you need to bring video from a separate console or computer; not required for a computer-only avatar setup.
- Green screen: useful for removing a physical background when your chosen scene or camera workflow needs it; an avatar can also be composited without one.
- Second monitor: convenient for reading chat and controlling scenes, but a single display can run the software.
- Streaming platform: choose one only when you are ready to broadcast; the equipment list itself does not force a particular service.
Assemble the setup in this order
- Choose 2D or 3D. For VTube Studio, obtain or create a Live2D Cubism model. For VRoid or VRM, select compatible 3D software instead.
- Verify the computer. Compare your Windows or Mac hardware with the application’s current minimum and recommended figures, including dedicated VRAM and storage.
- Install the avatar software. Install VTube Studio on the computer and place the compatible model in its model location according to the current documentation.
- Select tracking input. Connect a webcam, or install the mobile app on a confirmed-compatible phone. Do not buy a phone solely from a generic operating-system label.
- Set the camera view. Center your face, use steady lighting and choose 1280×720 or higher with 15–30 FPS for webcam tracking.
- Calibrate movement. Make a neutral expression, blink, open and close your mouth, and turn your head while watching the tracking preview. Reposition the camera if eyes or mouth are frequently lost.
- Add the microphone. Select it as the audio input, check your voice level and enable audio-based lip sync only if you want that behavior.
- Configure recording or streaming. Add VTube Studio as a source in OBS, Streamlabs or another supported application, then place the avatar over your game, presentation or background.
- Run a private test. Record a short clip and review tracking, lip movement, audio clarity, dropped frames and scene composition before going live.
What can wait until after your first stream
Delay purchases that solve a problem you have not observed. Start with the computer, model, one tracking route and microphone. Upgrade only after testing reveals a limitation.
- Replace a webcam when resolution, lighting performance or tracking stability is genuinely inadequate.
- Add lighting when facial features disappear in shadows or backlight.
- Move to a dedicated microphone when headset audio, placement or room noise limits your recordings.
- Add a second monitor when chat and scene control become difficult on one screen.
- Consider a capture card only for an external video source.
- Commission more elaborate art or rigging when the base model no longer meets your creative goals.
Troubleshooting common first-day problems
The avatar loads but does not move
Check that the model is a Live2D Cubism model supported by VTube Studio, that the correct webcam or phone is selected, and that another application has not taken exclusive control of the camera. Re-run calibration with your face centered and well lit.
Eyes or blinks track poorly
Use at least 1280×720 for webcam input, stay within the recommended 15–30 FPS range, improve front lighting and remove anything blocking the camera’s view. Higher resolution cannot compensate for a face that is dark or off-center.
The phone will not connect
Confirm the exact iPhone, iPad or Android model against current VTube Studio documentation. For Android, verify Google ARCore support. A recent device is more likely to work than an older one, but the operating-system name alone is insufficient.
Streaming becomes choppy
Compare the combined workload with the computer’s recommended specifications, then reduce scene complexity or recording quality and close unnecessary applications. The published VTube Studio requirements do not guarantee performance for every simultaneous game, browser source and encoder.
The mouth moves without speaking, or barely moves
Check the selected microphone and input level. Audio-based lip sync requires a microphone; it is independent of webcam or phone face tracking. Remove background noise and adjust the input so normal speech is detected without clipping.
