The simplest complete setup is a compatible disc player connected to a television, plus an audio system. For music, use a turntable for vinyl or a CD-capable player for CDs. Sound comes from powered speakers, or from a receiver/amplifier feeding passive speakers. Vinyl adds one compatibility requirement: the turntable signal must reach a PHONO input or pass through a phono preamp before entering a normal AUX or line-level input. A pair of speakers is sufficient for stereo; surround sound requires a multichannel AV receiver and additional speakers.
Start with the formats you own
Make an inventory before buying anything. A vinyl collection needs a turntable. Compact discs need a CD player or another device whose manual explicitly lists audio-CD support. DVDs and Blu-ray Discs need a player that supports those exact formats, and that player needs a display such as a television. Some Blu-ray players also play CDs, but support for CD-R, CD-RW, recordable DVDs, region-specific discs, or unusual media varies by model.

Existing equipment may cover part of the system. A television might provide basic sound, a receiver may already accept several sources, and powered speakers may eliminate the need for a separate amplifier. Read the labels on the actual rear panels and the device manuals rather than buying a generic bundle of components or cables.
Three practical system configurations
1. Simplest music-only setup
For vinyl, the minimum chain is:
- A turntable compatible with your records.
- Either powered speakers, or an amplifier/receiver plus passive speakers.
- A phono signal path: a turntable with a built-in phono preamp, a receiver with a PHONO input, or a separate phono preamp.
- The cables required by the terminals on those components.
For CDs, substitute a CD player or a compatible Blu-ray player. A stereo receiver or integrated amplifier selects the source and powers two passive speakers. Powered speakers perform both jobs inside the speaker cabinets, so the player connects directly to their available line input.

2. Movies with two-channel stereo
A straightforward movie-and-music system consists of a television, a DVD/Blu-ray player, an amplifier or receiver, and two speakers. Connect the player to the television for video, normally with HDMI when both devices have HDMI ports. Send audio to the receiver either through the receiver’s HDMI inputs and output, an optical or coaxial digital connection when provided, or an analog connection supported by both units.
The receiver acts as the switching and amplification center. It can select the disc player, feed the television, and drive a left and right speaker. This is often the least complicated arrangement that gives movies better separation and volume capability than built-in television speakers while retaining a normal stereo music setup.
3. Optional surround-sound setup
Surround requires more than connecting a Blu-ray player. Use a multichannel-capable AV receiver and the speakers appropriate to its layout. A typical arrangement can include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Left and right front speakers for the main stereo image.
- A center speaker for dialogue and on-screen effects.
- Rear or surround speakers for directional effects.
- A subwoofer for low-frequency effects, if the system and room call for one.
Sony’s surround guidance, updated November 1, 2024, notes that a player connection alone does not create surround sound; the receiver must support multichannel audio and the speaker package must be connected and configured for it. A two-speaker system will play the program in stereo even when the disc contains a surround soundtrack.
What each component does
Turntable and phono preamplification
A turntable produces a low-level phono signal that is different from the line-level signal expected by AUX, CD, or other high-level inputs. Sony’s support guidance (last modified December 21, 2020) states: “If a PHONO input is not available, the turntable must have a built-in amplifier or an in-line amplifier must be used to connect to another input on the stereo system.” In current terminology, that built-in or in-line amplifier is a phono preamp.

Some turntables have a PHONO/LINE switch. Audio-Technica’s AT-LP60 manual instructs users to select PHONO when connecting to a receiver’s PHONO input and LINE when connecting to AUX or another high-level input. This is model-specific guidance: use the switch positions and output labels in the manual for the turntable you own. Do not connect a line-output turntable to a PHONO input, or a raw phono-output turntable to AUX, without the appropriate conversion.
CD or Blu-ray player
A dedicated CD player is designed for audio CDs. A Blu-ray player can be more versatile, but “Blu-ray player” does not automatically mean every optical format is supported. Sony’s compatibility information, dated March 21, 2023, lists audio CD and CD-R/CD-RW music support for certain Blu-ray players while emphasizing that the individual operating manual controls the answer. Check whether your model accepts pressed CDs, recordable CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray Discs, and any files burned onto those discs.

The player reads the supported movie disc and sends the picture to a television. HDMI is generally the preferred connection when both devices provide it; Sony recommends HDMI for optimum picture quality on compatible equipment. Port availability differs by model, country, and region. Older equipment may instead offer composite video, usually through a yellow RCA jack, but that connection has lower picture capability and may not be present on newer players or televisions.
Stereo receiver or integrated amplifier
A basic stereo receiver combines a two-channel amplifier, speaker terminals, and inputs for sources such as a CD player or portable audio device. An integrated amplifier performs the amplification and source selection without necessarily including radio functions. Either can drive passive speakers, provided its output and impedance requirements match the speakers.
Use a stereo receiver when the priority is two-channel music and straightforward operation. Confirm that it has the inputs you need, especially PHONO if the turntable lacks a preamp, and enough line or digital inputs for the rest of the system.

AV receiver
An AV receiver is designed as a hub for several audio and video sources. Denon describes this role as connecting devices such as Blu-ray/DVD players, CD players, turntables, and other sources, then routing video to a display and audio to speakers. It is the appropriate center for a surround system, but it can also run a two-speaker setup. Its extra processing and speaker channels may be unnecessary if you only need simple stereo.
Powered and passive speakers
Powered speakers contain their own amplifiers. Connect a suitable player or preamp-level source to their input, set the volume carefully, and no separate receiver is required. Passive speakers contain no power amplifier; they need speaker-level output from a stereo receiver, integrated amplifier, or AV receiver.
For basic stereo, a left-and-right pair of bookshelf speakers is a complete speaker set. Surround layouts add speakers only when the receiver, room, and listening goal justify them. Match the speaker connections and electrical requirements to the amplifier’s manual rather than assuming every receiver can safely drive every speaker combination.
Compatibility checks before you buy
Use this checklist for every component pair:
- Format: Confirm the player supports the exact disc type, region or recording format where relevant, and any CD-R/CD-RW or file playback you expect.
- Inputs and outputs: Write down the actual terminal names—HDMI, optical, coaxial, RCA line, PHONO, speaker terminals—and verify that the other device has a matching path.
- Amplification: Determine whether the speakers are powered. If they are passive, identify the receiver or amplifier that will drive them.
- Phono handling: Establish whether the turntable has a built-in preamp, the receiver has PHONO, or an external phono preamp is needed.
- Channel count: Decide whether you need two-channel stereo or multichannel surround before choosing a receiver.
- Regional and model differences: Connector availability and disc support can change by model, edition, country, and region. Use the manual for the exact device.
Connection procedures
Connect a turntable to powered speakers
- Check the turntable’s rear panel for a PHONO/LINE switch and for a pair of analog output jacks.
- If the speakers have a normal AUX/LINE input, set the turntable to LINE only when its manual says the built-in preamp is active.
- If the turntable outputs only PHONO, place a separate phono preamp between the turntable and speakers, then connect the preamp’s line output to the speakers.
- Connect the left and right channels to the corresponding inputs, attach the ground wire if both devices provide a ground terminal, and start with the volume low.
Connect a turntable to a stereo or AV receiver
- Use the receiver’s PHONO input when the turntable is set to PHONO and does not provide a line output.
- Use an AUX, CD, or other line-level input when the turntable is set to LINE or when an external phono preamp is supplying the line output.
- Never route a line-level output into PHONO; the extra gain and equalization can cause severe distortion.
- Select the matching input on the receiver and test at low volume before raising the level.
Connect a CD or Blu-ray player for music
- Confirm in the player’s manual that the disc type is supported.
- For analog playback, connect the player’s left and right RCA outputs to a receiver’s line input or powered speakers’ line input.
- For digital playback, connect an available HDMI, optical, or coaxial output to an input supported by the receiver; the receiver must decode the formats you intend to use.
- Select the corresponding source and check that both channels play.
Connect a player and television for movies
- Connect the player’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the television or AV receiver.
- If the receiver is the hub, connect the receiver’s HDMI output to the television’s HDMI input, then select the player’s receiver input.
- Use composite video only when both pieces of equipment provide compatible composite jacks and HDMI is unavailable.
- Set the television and receiver to the correct input, insert a supported disc, and verify picture and sound separately.
Choosing between stereo and surround
| Goal | Core equipment | What it delivers | Extra requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl or CD music | Turntable or CD-capable player, powered speakers or stereo amplifier/receiver, two speakers | Two-channel stereo | Phono preamp path for a turntable that lacks line output |
| Movies with simple audio | Television, compatible DVD/Blu-ray player, stereo receiver or amplifier, two speakers | Picture with left/right sound | Video and audio connections supported by both devices |
| Home-theater surround | Television, compatible player, multichannel AV receiver, front and additional speakers | Multichannel sound when the disc and receiver support it | Center, surround/rear and optional subwoofer roles; receiver setup and speaker calibration |
Room size, listening habits, and budget affect the best personal choice, but there is no universal equipment count. A two-speaker system is not an incomplete surround system; it is the correct endpoint when stereo is the intended format.
Cables and physical setup
Buy cables only after checking both devices. HDMI may carry picture and digital audio between a player, receiver, and television. Stereo RCA cables carry left/right analog audio. Speaker wire runs from a receiver or amplifier to passive speakers. Yamaha’s AVR setup guidance lists speaker wire and RCA cable among typical supplies, but the exact list depends on the terminals on your components.

Keep left and right channels consistent from source to speaker, avoid forcing a connector into a different jack, and leave enough slack to access the rear panels. Place speakers where their tweeters are near ear height when seated, keep ventilation openings on receivers clear, and put a turntable on a stable surface away from strong speaker vibration.

No sound from a turntable
Check whether a PHONO-output turntable is plugged into AUX without a preamp, or whether a LINE-output turntable is connected to PHONO. Verify the receiver’s selected input, the ground connection, channel plugs, and the turntable’s mute or output switch. Start playback with the stylus guard removed only if the manual instructs you to do so.
Distorted or very loud vinyl
This usually indicates a line output feeding PHONO. Switch the turntable to PHONO only when the receiver has a PHONO input, or move the connection to AUX/LINE when the turntable’s preamp is enabled. Do not compensate for a wrong signal level by turning the volume down.
Picture but no movie sound
Check whether audio is routed through the television, receiver, or powered speakers. Confirm the selected HDMI input, receiver source, mute state, and digital-audio compatibility. If the player is connected directly to the television, the television must be set to output sound through its own speakers or its audio-out connection.
A disc will not play
Recheck the model’s supported formats and region restrictions, clean the disc, and test a known-compatible disc. A Blu-ray logo does not guarantee support for every recordable disc or file type. Use the exact operating manual for the player rather than assuming compatibility from the tray shape.

Surround speakers are silent
Confirm that the receiver is configured for the connected speaker layout, the source contains a multichannel soundtrack, and the player-to-receiver link carries the required audio signal. A stereo program or a two-channel receiver will not produce discrete rear channels simply because extra speakers are connected.
Upgrade paths that preserve compatibility
Start with the formats you use most and add capability in a controlled order. A turntable with a built-in phono preamp can simplify a first system; a later receiver with PHONO can still accept it through a line input when the turntable remains in LINE mode. A Blu-ray player can consolidate CD, DVD, and supported Blu-ray playback, but only after its manual confirms the formats in your collection.
If you later want surround, replace or supplement the stereo receiver with a multichannel AV receiver, then add the center, surround, and low-frequency speakers that its layout supports. Keep the two-channel speakers as the front left and right pair where appropriate. Cable changes should follow the new terminals, not precede them.

- Which exact cable type matches each pair of terminals?
- Am I building two-channel stereo or a multichannel theater?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Blu-ray player replace a CD player?
Often, but not universally. Use it as a CD player only when the exact model’s manual lists audio-CD support and any recordable-disc formats you need.
Do I need a receiver if I buy powered speakers?
Not necessarily. Powered speakers contain amplification, so a compatible player can connect directly. You still need a phono preamp path for a turntable that outputs only a PHONO-level signal.
Will two speakers play a surround Blu-ray soundtrack?
They can play a downmixed or stereo presentation, but discrete surround requires a multichannel-capable receiver and the additional speakers for that layout.
Which cable should connect every component?
There is no universal cable. Choose HDMI, optical, coaxial, RCA, or speaker wire from the actual output and input terminals on the two devices.
Recommended Free Tools
Why does my turntable sound distorted through AUX?
The turntable may be set to PHONO without a preamp, or it may be connected through the wrong output setting. Match PHONO/LINE to the receiving input and follow the turntable manual.
