The right apparatus depends on what you need to know. A sealed outlet and graduated cylinder, buret, or suitable gas syringe can measure total collected gas volume. To identify and quantify hydrogen and oxygen separately, you need a calibrated gas chromatograph (GC) or another gas analyzer. To calculate Faradaic efficiency, add synchronized current or charge measurement and, for a flowing system, a calibrated gas-flow measurement. Temperature, pressure, water vapor, leakage, crossover and dead volume determine whether the result is merely illustrative or defensible.

Choose the measurement before buying equipment

“Gas production” can mean three different measurements. Decide which one is required before selecting tubing, collection vessels or analytical instruments.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Measurement goal What it tells you Minimum equipment What it cannot establish
Total collected volume How much wet or dry gas reached the collection device during a defined interval Water-splitting cell, sealed outlet, tubing, graduated cylinder or buret for water displacement (or a compatible gas syringe), timer, and temperature/pressure readings Whether the gas is hydrogen, oxygen or a mixture; purity and species-specific production
Gas identity and composition The concentration or amount of individual gases such as H2 and O2 Sealed sampling path, GC with an appropriate column and detector, carrier gas, calibrated flow control, sampling loop or gas-tight syringe, and certified H2/O2 standards Total production in a flowing system unless gas flow and elapsed time are also measured
Faradaic efficiency The fraction of electrical charge that produced the measured product Either volumetric or composition analysis plus a potentiostat/galvanostat or equivalent current-and-charge logger; add calibrated flow measurement for carrier-gas systems A trustworthy efficiency value if gas capture, crossover, dilution, current and timing are not aligned

The cell type and operating conditions also matter. A harmonized European report covering proton-exchange-membrane, anion-exchange-membrane and alkaline electrolysis treats temperature, pressure, gas-flow rate and gas composition as reference settings to report, not interchangeable details. Your apparatus must therefore match the cell’s pressure rating, electrolyte chemistry, temperature and expected gas rate.

Tier 1: equipment for a volume-only demonstration

Use this tier when the question is simply how much gas the cell collects over a stated time. It is inexpensive and visually clear, but it is not a composition analysis.

Required hardware

  • Water-splitting cell with separate anode and cathode outlets if you want the products kept apart.
  • Chemically compatible, gas-tight tubing and connectors. Keep the outlet path short and check every joint for leaks.
  • A graduated cylinder or buret inverted in a water trough for water displacement. A graduated gas syringe is an alternative when its capacity, fittings, materials and pressure suitability match the setup.
  • A timer or data logger, plus a thermometer and a way to determine gas pressure. Record atmospheric pressure when the collection vessel is open to it.
  • Clamps or supports that hold the collection vessel securely and prevent the outlet from slipping out.

How to assemble and run it

  1. Fill the graduated cylinder or buret completely with water and invert it without trapping an air pocket. Position the cell outlet beneath the opening.
  2. Flush or condition the outlet path as appropriate for your cell so that the first gas volume does not consist mainly of residual air. If anode and cathode gases must remain distinct, use two independent collection paths.
  3. Start the timer when the collection interval begins, and record the cell current or operating setting even if you are not yet calculating efficiency.
  4. At the end of the interval, read the displaced volume at eye level. Record gas temperature and the pressure used for the reading, along with elapsed time and which electrode produced the sample.
  5. Repeat measurements with the same liquid level, tubing arrangement and interval. A stable setup matters more than adding extra decimal places to a single reading.

Correct a wet-gas reading

Gas collected over water contains water vapor. The gas volume therefore depends on temperature and on the water-vapor pressure at that temperature. For a quantitative result, state whether the reported value is wet or corrected to dry gas, and apply the pressure and vapor correction consistently. Do not compare an uncorrected water-displacement reading with a dry-gas value from another method as though they were equivalent.

This method measures collected volume only. It cannot tell whether the vessel contains hydrogen, oxygen, residual air, or a mixture. A volume reading also falls short if gas dissolves in the electrolyte, crosses through a separator, recombines, escapes through a leak or remains in dead volume.

GC hardware and consumables

  • GC configured with a column and detector that can resolve the expected gases. The instrument must be suitable for hydrogen, oxygen and any other products or contaminants your cell may generate.
  • Gas-tight sampling loop or syringe, with low-dead-volume valves and tubing where possible.
  • Carrier-gas cylinder, regulator and a calibrated mass-flow controller or flow meter. A continuous purge can reduce air contamination compared with repeated manual syringe sampling.
  • Known hydrogen and oxygen calibration standards spanning the concentrations you expect to measure.
  • Pressure and temperature sensors at the sampling point, and a cell or reservoir arrangement that prevents liquid carryover into the analytical line.

Calibrate before collecting samples

  1. Define the concentration range expected at the detector. The sample concentrations must fall within the calibration range and above the instrument’s detection limit.
  2. Introduce a series of known H2 and O2 concentrations using calibrated flow controllers or meters. Record the instrument response for each standard.
  3. Check calibration linearity and retain the calibration curve and conditions with the experiment record.
  4. Run a blank or carrier-gas check to identify background air and leaks before connecting the electrolysis cell.
  5. Sample the cell gas through the same plumbing and flow conditions used for calibration. Report the detector, column, standards, flow, pressure and temperature.

Manual syringe sampling can draw laboratory air into the sample and create a false oxygen or nitrogen signal. A continuous carrier-gas path through a closed reservoir headspace can reduce that risk, but excessive carrier flow dilutes the product. If dilution pushes the analyte below the GC detection limit or lowers the signal-to-noise ratio, reduce or regulate the flow rather than assuming the cell produced less gas.

When mass spectrometry is justified

Mass spectrometry can provide advanced, near-real-time analysis and may distinguish more species than a basic teaching setup. It is not required for a volume-only demonstration, and it still needs a controlled sampling path, appropriate calibration and attention to dilution and pressure.

Tier 3: equipment for Faradaic efficiency and time-resolved work

Faradaic efficiency links product amount to electrical charge. The H2Tools protocol page describes procedures for measuring product crossover and Faradaic efficiency and notes that its general principles can be adapted to other systems.

Electrical measurement

  • Potentiostat, galvanostat or equivalent instrument that logs current as a function of time.
  • A defined integration interval so the charge passed during exactly the gas-measurement period can be calculated.
  • Synchronized timestamps between the electrical record, gas-flow record and GC or collection readings.

Flowing-gas measurement

In a carrier-gas system, GC concentration alone is not a product amount. Add a calibrated mass-flow controller or flow meter and record flow, temperature, pressure and elapsed time. Product amount is inferred from concentration together with the carrier-gas stream; omitting flow makes the result incomplete. Choose a purge rate that provides representative mixing without diluting hydrogen or oxygen below the detector’s useful range.

Gas-path design

  • Use low-dead-volume tubing and a repeatable sampling point so the measured gas corresponds to the electrical interval.
  • Keep the electrolyte loop and carrier-gas channel closed where the cell design permits, while providing the pressure relief and collection route required by the apparatus.
  • Use separate anode and cathode channels when crossover or product ratio is important.
  • Document tubing material, internal volume, valves, fittings, pressure and temperature. These details affect delay time and apparent production rate.

Match the apparatus to the cell and operating conditions

A single universal equipment list does not exist for every water-splitting cell. Alkaline, PEM and anion-exchange systems differ in electrolyte compatibility, pressure, water management and gas routing. Before assembling the measurement train, write down:

  • Expected gas production rate and whether production is steady, pulsed or transient.
  • Whether the result must be total volume, species concentration, crossover, instantaneous rate or Faradaic efficiency.

These conditions should appear in the final report. The EU harmonized testing work explicitly treats temperature, pressure, flow rate and gas composition as contextual test settings rather than optional footnotes.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Corrective action
Unexpected oxygen or hydrogen in the other electrode’s outlet Gas crossover, membrane/separator leakage, dissolved gas transport or plumbing cross-connection Check compartment seals and connections, verify separate outlet paths, measure both outlets and report crossover rather than assuming ideal separation.
Collected volume is lower than expected Leaks, gas dissolving in liquid, recombination, uncollected dead volume or a reading taken before the line filled Leak-test the path, condition the line, shorten dead volume, inspect the separator and define when the timing interval starts.
GC signal is noisy or below detection Carrier flow is too high, sample is over-diluted, calibration range is unsuitable or the detector is not configured for the gas Regulate flow, verify standards and detector configuration, and ensure expected concentrations lie above the detection limit.
Repeated syringe samples disagree Air introduced during sampling, inconsistent purge, changing pressure or variable sample delay Use a repeatable loop or purge procedure, minimize dead volume and record sampling pressure, temperature and time.
Faradaic efficiency is below 100% Crossover, recombination, dissolution, leakage, incomplete collection or mismatch between charge and gas intervals Audit the complete gas path and synchronize electrical and gas measurements. Report uncertainty and the selected collection and analysis method.
Two methods give different volumes One value is wet and the other dry, or they use different pressure, temperature, collection timing or calibration Normalize conditions and state all corrections before comparing results.

A practical selection guide

  1. Need only a classroom-scale volume estimate? Start with a sealed outlet, graduated cylinder or buret, timer, thermometer and pressure record. Add a second collection vessel for separate electrode products.
  2. Need to prove which gas was made? Use GC with a suitable column and detector, gas-tight sampling hardware, carrier-gas flow control and known H2/O2 standards. Do not substitute a gas syringe for composition analysis.
  3. Need production rate over time? Prefer online GC or another continuous analyzer with calibrated flow and time-stamped data. A one-time collected volume cannot show transient behavior.
  4. Need Faradaic efficiency? Add current or charge logging and align its interval with the gas measurement. In a flowing setup, measure the carrier/product flow as well as concentration.
  5. Need high confidence in crossover or purity? Use separate low-dead-volume gas paths, calibrated standards, pressure and temperature monitoring, and repeated measurements. Consider mass spectrometry only when its greater complexity addresses a specific analytical need.

What to record with every result

  • Cell type, electrode arrangement, electrolyte and separator.
  • Applied current or potential, elapsed time and integrated charge when applicable.
  • Gas collection or sampling location, tubing and fittings, dead-volume treatment and whether outlets were separate.
  • Temperature, pressure, carrier-gas flow and water-vapor correction status.
  • For GC: column, detector, standards, calibration range, linearity check and detection limit.
  • Collected volume or measured concentration, calculation method, repeats and uncertainty.
  • Any evidence of leakage, crossover, recombination, dissolution or incomplete capture.

That record turns an equipment list into a reproducible measurement. The simplest apparatus is appropriate when its limitation—volume without identity—is stated plainly; composition and Faradaic-efficiency claims require the additional calibration, flow and electrical measurements described above.
