To hear Dolby Atmos from Apple TV, you need an Apple TV 4K, a movie or show with an Atmos soundtrack, and a compatible audio setup. Apple lists four routes: HomePod, Atmos-capable TV speakers, an Atmos soundbar, or an Atmos-enabled AV receiver. For a soundbar or receiver, the HDMI connection matters: Apple recommends connecting Apple TV 4K directly to it, because Apple says its high-bandwidth Atmos format does not work over ARC.
Choose an audio setup that supports Atmos
Apple documents several ways to play Dolby Atmos; a separate receiver is not required if another supported route suits your room. The hardware categories below are Apple’s documented options, not certifications of every product model.

Connect a soundbar or receiver through HDMI
For a soundbar or AV receiver, use this signal path:

- Connect Apple TV 4K to an HDMI input on the soundbar or receiver.
- Connect the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI output to the television.
- Check that the soundbar or receiver supports Atmos and passes through the video formats you want, such as HDR10 or Dolby Vision.
Apple says Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Dolby Atmos does not work over ARC. So a setup that sends Apple TV audio through the TV and back to a soundbar or receiver over ARC may not deliver Atmos. Verify the specific devices’ HDMI capabilities before choosing a route. [Apple’s connection guidance]

Know when eARC is relevant to HomePod
eARC provides a different route: Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) can receive audio from an eARC-capable television or a device connected to it, then play that audio through HomePod when configured. This is useful for TV-connected sources; it is not the same as routing Apple TV 4K’s high-bandwidth Atmos to a soundbar over ARC. [Apple’s eARC setup]
- Connect Apple TV’s HDMI port to the television’s port marked eARC.
- Enable HDMI-CEC if required by the television.
- Set HomePod as the default audio output and turn on Play Television Audio under Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Return Channel.
- Check the television’s own settings; exact labels and requirements vary by TV.
Check whether Atmos is available and playing
- On Apple TV, open Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Format and check whether Dolby Atmos is available and enabled. If it is not offered, Apple says the home entertainment setup may need to change. [Apple Support]
- Check the audio information for the specific film or show. The title must have an Atmos track; compatible equipment alone cannot add one.
- For HomePod home theater, make sure Apple TV and HomePod are assigned to the same room. [Apple Support]
Apple TV automatically selects the highest-quality audio format supported by both the home entertainment setup and the content being watched. That means an Atmos-capable system will not play Atmos for every title, and a title’s Atmos track will not help if the connected setup does not support it. [Apple Support]

What to verify before choosing equipment
- Atmos support: Confirm the TV, soundbar, or receiver explicitly supports Dolby Atmos for the intended connection.
- HDMI routing: Check available HDMI inputs and pass-through support; for a soundbar or receiver, Apple recommends connecting Apple TV directly to that device.
- Video compatibility: Make sure the chosen route supports the TV video formats you use, including HDR10 or Dolby Vision where relevant.
- Room and system fit: Choose among built-in TV speakers, a soundbar, a receiver-and-speaker system, or HomePod based on the equipment and setup you want.
Apple’s setup pages describe these equipment categories and connection requirements, but do not establish compatibility for every third-party model. Check the specifications for your exact television and audio device before buying or rewiring.
