To connect a home to satellite internet, you normally need a provider-compatible outdoor dish or terminal, the matching modem/router or gateway, power and connecting cables, and a stable base or mount. You also need a clear view of the required sky and at least one phone, computer, or other network device. The exact parts and who installs them depend on the provider and the terminal kit you order.
The essential equipment
Satellite internet is a complete, provider-specific system rather than a collection of interchangeable consumer electronics. The outdoor terminal communicates with the satellite, the indoor modem or gateway converts that connection for your home network, and the cables and power supply keep the two sections connected.

| Component | What it does | What to check before installation |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor dish or terminal | Receives and transmits the satellite signal. | It must be approved for your provider and the exact terminal generation or service plan. |
| Modem, router, or gateway | Connects the outdoor link to your home network. Some gateways combine modem and Wi-Fi router functions. | Use the equipment supplied or specified by the provider; a generic cable modem or router cannot replace the satellite modem. |
| Cables and power supply | Carry data between the outdoor terminal and indoor equipment and provide electrical power. | Use the cables included for your kit and place the indoor equipment near a suitable household outlet. |
| Base, bracket, or mount | Holds the terminal in a stable position with the required view of the sky. | The supplied base may be enough for ground placement; a roof, wall, or pole location requires a compatible mount. |
| Customer device | Lets you use the connection, such as a phone, laptop, desktop, streaming box, or game console. | Check whether the device will connect by Wi-Fi or Ethernet and whether you need additional network cables. |
The dish or terminal, modem or gateway, and their cables should be treated as one system. Hughesnet describes a dish paired with a Wi-Fi modem, while Viasat describes a dish/transceiver/bracket assembly paired with a modem. Viasat’s Wi-Fi modem includes a router for new installations. Those arrangements are not evidence that another provider’s dish, modem, or router will work on the same service.

| Example | Outdoor equipment | Indoor equipment and included parts | Installation approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starlink Standard | Terminal and supplied base | Power supply, cables, and Wi-Fi router in the Standard kit | Designed as a self-install package; use the setup guide and app. |
| Starlink Mini, Performance, Performance Gen 2, and Enterprise kits | Terminal and kit-specific mounting hardware | Starlink notes that these kit lines do not include a Wi-Fi router; verify the exact guide for the remaining parts. | Installation steps and required accessories depend on the kit. |
| Hughesnet standard installation | Outdoor dish or antenna system supplied for the service | Indoor Wi-Fi modem; the technician runs the connecting cable inside. | Professional installation. The standard description includes connecting two customer devices. |
| Viasat new installation | Leased dish, transceiver, and bracket assembly | Provider modem with an integrated router; the installer brings leased equipment and installation materials. | Professional installation, with site-specific work handled by the installer. |
These examples show why a shopping list copied from another service can be wrong. Starlink’s general kit list includes a router but specifically excludes one from several kit lines. Hughesnet and Viasat describe provider-supplied equipment and technician installation rather than a customer buying a standalone dish and modem.
How the outdoor terminal and indoor network work together
Outdoor signal equipment
The terminal is mounted outside where it can maintain the satellite link. Depending on the service, it may be called a dish, antenna, terminal, or a dish/transceiver assembly. It is the part that must match the provider’s network and hardware generation. A dish purchased for a different service is not a universal satellite receiver.
Indoor modem or gateway
The indoor unit receives the terminal’s connection and presents it to your home network. A modem may perform only the satellite-to-network conversion, while a gateway combines that function with Wi-Fi routing. Viasat’s new-installation modem is described as including a router; Hughesnet describes a Wi-Fi modem. If you want to use your own mesh system or router, first confirm that the provider’s equipment supports that configuration. Do not remove the provider modem simply because you already own a conventional router.

Power and data path
The terminal cable runs from the outdoor unit to the provider’s indoor equipment, and the indoor router or power supply connects to household electricity. Starlink’s Standard setup guide shows connecting the terminal cable to its router and then powering the router. Keep the supplied cable run protected from sharp bends, standing water, and accidental foot traffic, and leave enough slack for service access without putting strain on the connectors.

Placement: the sky view is a requirement, not an accessory
A technically complete kit can still perform poorly if the terminal is blocked. Starlink instructs customers to use its app’s obstruction tool. Its setup guidance warns: “Objects that obstruct the connection between your Starlink and the satellite, such as a tree branch, pole, or roof, will cause service interruptions.”
Do not assume one compass direction applies to every service or location. Viasat’s installation guidance says a technician helps select a position with a clear line of sight to the southern sky, while Starlink directs customers to its app rather than a universal direction. Local latitude, satellite constellation, terminal design, and provider network all affect the required view.
Check the proposed location before drilling
- Walk the property and identify possible locations with the widest unobstructed view: ground level, a wall, a roof, or a pole.
- Use the provider’s placement tool or app at each candidate location. Check the view from the terminal’s actual mounting height, not only from ground level.
- Look for trees, roof edges, chimneys, poles, and nearby structures that could enter the signal path as the terminal operates.
- Confirm that a cable can reach the indoor equipment without an unsafe or exposed route.
- Choose a location that can be reached for maintenance while remaining secure against wind, animals, and accidental impact.
Self-installing a kit such as Starlink Standard
A self-install package shifts the site survey and basic assembly to you. The exact connector layout differs by terminal, so use the guide supplied with your kit rather than a video for a different generation.

- Position the base and terminal. Place the supplied base where it is stable and where the app shows an acceptable sky view. Use a different location only with a mount approved for the terminal.
- Connect the outdoor cable. Attach the supplied terminal cable to the terminal and route the other end indoors to the provider router or gateway. Avoid pinching the cable in windows or doors.
- Connect the router and power supply. Follow the guide’s sequence for the terminal cable, router, and power supply, then plug the power supply into a suitable household outlet.
- Open the provider app. Use the obstruction-checking tool and complete the activation or account steps shown for your service.
- Join the network. Connect your phone or computer to the new Wi-Fi network, or use an Ethernet connection if the kit and router provide one. Test more than one device before securing a permanent cable route.
- Secure the final installation. Once the connection and sky view are confirmed, fasten the base or approved mount so it cannot shift. A temporary placement can become unreliable if wind or foot traffic moves the terminal.
If the app reports obstructions, moving the terminal is usually more useful than replacing the router. If the equipment has no power, check the outlet, power supply connections, and both ends of the supplied cable before changing the mounting location.

What professional installation covers
Hughesnet example
Hughesnet’s standard installation description assigns the main physical work to a technician. The technician installs the outdoor dish or antenna system, runs cable between the dish and the indoor modem, and connects two customer devices. You should still decide which rooms need service, identify a reachable outlet, and make sure someone can provide access to the proposed mounting area.
Viasat example
Viasat describes the terminal equipment as leased and says the installer brings the equipment and installation materials. The installation includes selecting a location with a clear line of sight to the southern sky, installing the dish/transceiver and bracket assembly, routing the cable to the modem, and setting up the modem’s integrated router. Exact work depends on the property and the provider’s installation terms.
Professional installation does not eliminate the need for a placement decision. Tell the installer about preferred equipment locations, indoor network needs, and any areas where drilling or exposed cable is unacceptable. Non-standard site work can require a different plan, so ask what is included before the appointment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen you need an extra mount or bracket
The supplied base is suitable only for the placement it was designed to support. A roof, wall, or pole installation may need additional hardware. Starlink notes that extra mounts or accessories can be required depending on the installation. Viasat lists a secure pole mount among its standard options.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Do not buy a generic “satellite dish mount” solely because its dimensions look similar. Confirm all three items before purchasing:
- The exact terminal model and hardware generation.
- The provider-approved bracket or adapter pattern.
- The mounting surface and the loads it must withstand.
A pole mount is a reasonable search category when the supplied base cannot provide the required position, but compatibility must be confirmed with the provider or the installer. A mount that fits a traditional television dish may not fit a modern flat terminal or its cable connection.

The provider router may be enough for a small home, but the satellite equipment remains the gateway to the service. If you add a mesh system, access point, switch, or wired devices, connect them downstream of the provider equipment according to the provider’s supported configuration. Keep the original modem or gateway available for diagnostics; support staff may ask you to test with it directly.

Plan the indoor side before installation:
- Choose a central router location if the provider equipment supplies Wi-Fi.
- Measure the cable route from the outdoor entry point to the modem or router.
- Identify which devices need Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi.
- Provide enough outlets for the modem, router, and any network hardware.
- Label cables if the terminal, power supply, and router use similar connectors.
Your phone or computer is required to activate and use the service, but it is not satellite receiving equipment. The satellite link ends at the provider terminal and modem; all ordinary household devices connect through the indoor network.

Common mistakes and fixes
Buying a generic dish or modem
Satellite internet equipment is provider-specific. Buying a dish, modem, or cable before confirming compatibility can leave you with hardware that cannot register on the network. Order the provider’s kit or use only parts the provider identifies for your terminal.
Assuming every kit includes Wi-Fi
Starlink specifically excludes a Wi-Fi router from its Mini, Performance, Performance Gen 2, and Enterprise kits. Check the exact kit guide and budget for the supported indoor networking equipment if a router is not included.
Mounting before checking obstructions
A roof or pole is not automatically better than the ground. Use the provider’s obstruction or site-selection tool first, and test the proposed location before drilling permanent holes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Using an incompatible mount
Mounting hardware must match the terminal and the surface. Verify the provider’s compatibility requirements, especially when replacing a supplied base with a roof, wall, or pole mount.
Expecting professional installation to cover every modification
Provider installation descriptions cover standard equipment and cable work. Unusual cable routes, difficult access, or a requested mounting structure may fall outside standard work. Confirm the scope with the provider before the appointment.
Pre-order checklist
- Confirm the provider serves your address and identify the exact terminal or kit name.
- Read the kit contents, including whether a router, power supply, cables, and base are included.
- Decide whether the service is self-installed or professionally installed.
- Use the provider’s app or installation guidance to check for obstructions.
- Choose a safe outdoor location and an indoor equipment location with power.
- Measure the likely cable route and plan how it will enter the building.
- Determine whether the supplied base is sufficient or an approved mount is needed.
- Prepare a phone or computer for activation and at least one device for a connection test.
Bottom line
The minimum practical setup is a provider-matched outdoor terminal, its indoor modem/router or gateway, the supplied power and data cables, and a stable base or compatible mount. The decisive preparation is not shopping for generic satellite hardware; it is confirming the exact kit, checking the sky view, and understanding whether the provider or a technician handles installation. Once those details match your property and service, your ordinary phones and computers connect through the indoor network just as they would on any other home internet connection.
