For surface steam treatment on beds, high tunnels, greenhouses, and small farms, you need six essentials: a steam generator or boiler, a dependable water supply, reinforced heat-resistant steam hose or pipe, a perforated distribution line or woven nylon sock, a reinforced heat-resistant tarp with weights or chains, and soil-temperature probes. A trailer is optional but useful for moving the generator.

That portable arrangement is intended for the upper 2–6 inches of soil and generally suits smaller areas, including farms under about 5 acres. Deeper treatment or open-field acreage requires a different class of equipment—such as buried-pipe injection, shank injection, or a mobile applicator matched to the bed dimensions and steam capacity. A small portable steamer should not be treated as an acreage-scale machine.

What a complete surface-steaming setup includes

Surface steaming works by enclosing a prepared bed under a heat-resistant cover and forcing steam through the soil from below. Each component has a specific job; substituting ordinary garden materials can create steam leaks, unsafe temperatures, or inadequate treatment.

Steam generator or boiler

The generator converts water into steam at a rate high enough to heat the covered soil. Select it by steam output, fuel availability, operating controls, and the area you can cover per cycle. The Mississippi State University Extension guide Soil Steaming 101 gives the Sioux Steam-Flo SF-30 as an example rated at 308.4 kilograms of steam per hour. That figure is an example reported by the guide, not a current availability claim or a guarantee that the model fits a particular farm.

Generator output is only one part of capacity. A unit that produces enough steam for a narrow bed may be impractical for a wide bed, deep soil, cold soil, or windy conditions. Confirm the manufacturer’s fuel, water, electrical, ventilation, and maintenance requirements before purchase or rental.

Water supply and treatment connections

Provide a clean, steady water source sized for the generator’s operating rate. Use the fittings, filtration, pressure controls, and hose diameter specified for the boiler. Plan where the water line, fuel, exhaust, and hot-steam hose will sit so workers do not cross them during operation.

Reinforced steam hose or pipe

Steam lines must be rated for the generator’s pressure and temperature. Reinforced pipe carries steam from the generator to the bed’s distribution system. Ordinary irrigation hose, plastic tubing, or unverified quick-connects can soften, rupture, or release scalding condensate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Perforated distribution line or woven nylon sock

Under the tarp, steam is spread through a perforated pipe, distribution line, or woven nylon sock. The Mississippi State setup places the sock beneath a reinforced tarp so steam enters the bed across its width instead of escaping at one point. Match the distribution length and outlet pattern to the bed dimensions; a system designed for one narrow bed will not heat a much wider area uniformly.

Reinforced heat-resistant tarp

The tarp forms the sealed treatment chamber. It must tolerate the intended temperature, resist tearing, and extend far enough beyond the bed to create a perimeter seal. Inspect seams, edges, and connection points before every cycle. A pinhole or loose corner can discharge steam and lower the soil temperature where treatment is needed.

Weights, chains, boards, or soil for the perimeter

Secure every edge with chains, boards, soil berms, or other heavy objects that will not shift when the tarp lifts. The goal is a continuous seal, not merely a few weights at the corners. Keep workers clear of edges while steam is flowing; trapped steam can escape suddenly when a weight moves.

Soil-temperature probes and a recording method

Use probes that are rated for hot, moist soil and place them approximately 2–6 inches deep, depending on the target zone. Multiple probes are preferable on long or irregular beds because one location can reach temperature before another. Record the warmest and coolest readings, the time each zone reaches target temperature, and how long the target is maintained.

Trailer or transport platform

A trailer is not required for a stationary greenhouse boiler, but it simplifies movement between high tunnels, fields, and storage. The trailer must carry the generator, water connections, fuel, hoses, and safety equipment without blocking ventilation or creating an unstable load.

Choose the delivery method by area and target depth

There is no universal steam-treatment machine. Start with the depth you need to heat, the total area, the bed width, and how often the equipment will move.

Situation Typical delivery method Equipment implication Limit to recognize
High tunnel, greenhouse, nursery bed, or small farm area Surface steaming under a tarp Portable generator, reinforced hose, distribution sock or perforated pipe, tarp, weights, and probes Primarily heats the upper 2–6 inches and requires repeated setup and relocation
Deeper soil target Injection steaming through buried pipes, hoses, or shanks Specialized injection manifold, stronger steam delivery, depth-compatible tooling, and controls More complex installation and higher capacity requirements
Large open-field beds Mobile or self-propelled injection system Field-capable generator, injection frame, traction system, operator controls, and service access Capital, transport, fuel, and maintenance needs rise substantially
Several disconnected sites Trailer-mounted portable system or contracted application Road-safe transport, quick-connects rated for steam, and a loading plan Setup time and logistics can dominate the treatment schedule

Mississippi State University Extension describes surface steaming as generally suited to smaller-scale settings such as high tunnels, greenhouses, and farms under 5 acres. Its description of injection steaming covers subsurface pipes or hoses and mobile systems for larger areas. Those labels describe operating approaches, not a promise that every system in a category fits every farm.

How to prepare and run a surface-steaming cycle

The following sequence reflects the extension method while leaving temperature and holding time to the pest, pathogen, weed, and crop-rotation plan being used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the treatment zone. Measure bed length, width, and the depth that must reach target temperature. Decide how many cycles are needed and where the generator can sit without exposing workers to exhaust or hot lines.
  2. Prepare the soil. Till or loosen the bed so steam can move through it. Remove large clods, stones, crop debris, and voids that can create cold pockets. Avoid treating excessively wet soil; it takes longer to heat and may require more steam.
  3. Lay out the distribution system. Place the perforated pipe or woven nylon sock evenly beneath the tarp. Connect it to reinforced steam hose and verify that all fittings are locked and rated for the operating conditions.
  4. Cover the bed. Spread the reinforced tarp with enough overlap to reach solid soil around the perimeter. Smooth sharp folds that could tear when the tarp lifts.
  5. Seal the perimeter. Use chains, boards, soil, or other heavy objects continuously around the edges. Check corners and hose entry points for gaps before introducing steam.
  6. Install probes. Put probes at representative locations approximately 2–6 inches deep. Include locations near the center, edges, and any area likely to heat slowly.
  7. Start the generator according to its manual. Confirm water flow, fuel supply, pressure, ventilation, and emergency shutoff operation. Keep unprotected people away from the tarp and steam connections.
  8. Raise temperature gradually. Watch every probe rather than relying on elapsed time. Soil starting temperature, moisture, wind, ambient conditions, tarp sealing, and steam penetration all affect how quickly the bed heats.
  9. Hold the temperature for the organism being managed. The extension guide quotes this operating principle: “After the soil reaches the target temperature, the steam flow is adjusted to maintain the desired temperature for the intended duration.” Do not use one universal time for every pest or pathogen.
  10. Shut down and cool safely. Follow the generator’s shutdown sequence, isolate the steam supply, and wait until the tarp and connections are safe to handle. Vent steam away from people before removing weights or lifting the cover.
  11. Document the cycle. Record probe readings, start and stop times, weather, soil moisture, fuel used, and any cold spots. Use those records to adjust tarp sealing, probe placement, or cycle size.

Temperature, depth, and soil conditions

The Mississippi State guide identifies a typical target range of 160–180°F and a broader range of 140–180°F depending on the organism and exposure time. Treat those figures as operating boundaries, not as a universal recipe. The correct temperature and holding period depend on what you are trying to control and how sensitive the soil biology and future crop are.

Exceeding 180°F can harm soil structure and alter soil chemistry, so install functioning probes before steam enters the bed and reduce or stop steam if readings continue to rise. A single probe can miss a cold edge or an overheated center; distributed monitoring is more reliable for long beds.

Initial soil temperature matters. Cold soil requires more energy than warm soil, while excessive moisture lengthens heating time. Wind increases heat loss from exposed tarp edges and makes a continuous seal especially important. Till thoroughly, repair tears, and keep the tarp tight enough to limit steam loss without placing workers near hot surfaces.

What field-scale equipment looks like

Field systems inject steam below the surface while moving across a bed or field, avoiding the repeated tarp placement required by surface treatment. They are specialized machines, not simply larger versions of a portable boiler.

Tracked shank-injection prototype

A University of Arizona Cooperative Extension report dated August 21, 2024 describes a prototype field-scale applicator tested on farms in Salinas, California. It used a tracked 100-brake-horsepower steam generator and shank injection. The report identifies its efficacy figures as preliminary while trials were underway, so those results should not be used as expected performance for another farm.

Self-propelled spinach demonstration

A University of Arizona report dated January 22, 2025 describes a self-propelled injector used in a spinach demonstration. The reported travel speed was greater than 0.25 mph, with cold soil around 50°F and uniform bed temperatures in that demonstration. The report states that further efficacy and profitability analysis was still needed; the speed is not a general equipment guarantee.

When evaluating a field machine, ask for documented performance at your bed width, soil type, starting temperature, target depth, and moisture level. A generator’s horsepower or steam rate alone does not establish treatment uniformity.

Comparison checklist before buying or renting

  • Area and bed width: Confirm the square footage treated per cycle or pass and the number of relocations per day.
  • Target depth: Surface systems generally address 2–6 inches; deeper targets require injection tooling and sufficient steam capacity.
  • Delivery method: Identify whether steam is distributed under a tarp, through buried lines, through shanks, or from a mobile frame.
  • Generator capacity: Check steam output, fuel consumption, water demand, pressure controls, and duty cycle under load.
  • Soil and weather: Ask how starting temperature, moisture, wind, and ambient temperature affect heating time.
  • Monitoring: Verify probe quantity, temperature range, data logging, alarms, and the ability to control steam flow.
  • Compatibility: Match hose, pipe, socks, fittings, and tarp materials to the generator’s temperature and pressure.
  • Labor: Count time for tilling, layout, sealing, probe installation, relocation, cooldown, and cleanup.
  • Transport and storage: Plan trailer capacity, road movement, fuel storage, winterization, and protected storage for tarps and hoses.
  • Service and safety: Confirm parts, inspection intervals, emergency shutoff access, guarding, exhaust management, and operator training.

Time and cost drivers

No universal purchase price or return-on-investment figure applies because the system can range from a portable surface rig to a custom mobile injector. The major cost drivers identified by Mississippi State University Extension are generator size, initial soil temperature, wind and ambient conditions, steam penetration, field size, fuel, and labor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an organized surface-steaming setup, the guide gives roughly three hours of preparation and around one hour of steamer operation. That is a contextual example, not a throughput promise. A farm with several beds, cold or wet soil, frequent relocation, or poor tarp seals can take considerably longer.

When comparing ownership with rental or custom application, calculate the complete cycle: equipment mobilization, water and fuel, labor, tarp and hose replacement, maintenance, storage, and the value of land occupied during treatment. Obtain current local quotes separately; availability and rates vary by region and season.

Burn prevention and operating safety

Steam and recently treated equipment can cause severe burns. Follow the generator and boiler instructions, restrict access to the treatment zone, and never open a pressurized connection. The extension guidance recommends heat-resistant gloves, pants, and closed-toe shoes; a face shield adds protection when working near hot fittings or releasing steam.

  • Inspect hoses, couplings, valves, tarp seams, and weights before every cycle.
  • Route hot lines where vehicles and workers cannot crush or trip over them.
  • Keep fuel and combustible materials away from hot exhaust and boiler surfaces.
  • Use a visible operator and an emergency-shutdown procedure understood by everyone nearby.
  • Assume the tarp, soil, condensate, and metal fittings remain hot after steam stops.
  • Do not lift a weighted edge to check progress while steam is flowing.

Troubleshooting common treatment problems

One probe reaches temperature while another stays cold

Look for a loose tarp edge, a damaged distribution sock, uneven soil preparation, excessive moisture, or a bed wider than the distribution pattern can heat. Reseal the perimeter, reposition the distribution line, and continue monitoring rather than increasing steam blindly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steam escapes around the tarp

Stop and make the area safe, then inspect for tears, uncovered corners, hose-entry gaps, or shifted weights. Add continuous chains, boards, or soil where needed. Steam loss reduces efficiency and can expose workers to a sudden plume.

Heating takes much longer than expected

Check soil moisture and starting temperature first. Cold, wet soil consumes more energy. Wind, poor tarp contact, undersized hose, restricted fittings, or insufficient generator output can also limit heat transfer. Compare actual probe readings and steam pressure with the equipment manual before changing the treatment plan.

Temperature overshoots the target

Reduce steam flow using the generator’s controls and verify probe placement. Do not rely on a single surface reading. Because temperatures above 180°F may harm soil structure and chemistry, stop the cycle if safe control cannot be restored.

Maintenance and storage

After each cycle, inspect and dry tarps, drain water from lines as permitted by the equipment manual, and check couplings for heat damage. Store tarps away from sunlight, rodents, sharp tools, and chemicals. Service burners, pumps, valves, and probes on the manufacturer’s schedule. Before winter, follow the generator’s draining and freeze-protection procedure; trapped water can damage boilers, hoses, and fittings.

Bottom line

A farm choosing surface steaming needs a correctly rated steam generator, water supply, reinforced steam line, perforated distributor or woven nylon sock, heat-resistant tarp, perimeter weights, and soil probes. Match that package to the bed area and a 2–6-inch target depth. If the job involves deeper soil or open-field acreage, evaluate injection or mobile equipment instead, using documented capacity, monitoring, safety, and operating costs rather than a portable steamer’s specifications alone.
