To build a 10GbE network, you need a 10GbE-capable interface in every device that should use the faster link, a 10GbE switch if multiple devices share the LAN, and cabling or other link media supported by the ports at both ends. The right setup depends on how many devices you are connecting, which ports they have, and the distance between them.
What equipment do you need for a 10GbE network?
- A 10GbE network interface for each computer, server, or other endpoint that needs a 10GbE connection. It can be built in or added with a compatible network adapter. Check the device’s operating-system and driver support as well as the interface type.
- A 10GbE switch when several devices need to communicate over the same local network. Choose enough 10GbE ports for the endpoints and any other 10GbE links, and make sure the port types match your equipment.
- Matching link media for each connection: Ethernet cable for RJ45 10GBASE-T ports, or a supported SFP+ direct-attach copper cable (DAC) or fiber-and-optics combination for SFP+ ports.
- A router or gateway only if the network needs to route traffic between networks or reach the internet. Its ports and routing capacity matter if it must handle traffic at 10GbE speeds.
A 10GbE switch does not upgrade a slower device: an endpoint with only a 1GbE interface remains limited to that interface’s link speed. Confirm the capability of both ends of each connection.
Choose the connection type that fits your ports and cable run
| Connection | What it needs | Distance and selection considerations |
|---|---|---|
| RJ45 10GBASE-T | Compatible 10GBASE-T ports at both ends and structured twisted-pair copper Ethernet cabling. | IEEE describes 10GBASE-T reach up to 100 m over balanced twisted-pair cabling. Actual reach depends on the cable channel, installation, and equipment. HPE Aruba Networking says tested Cat 6 may work for less than 30 m with a 10GBASE-T transceiver, or up to 100 m with a fixed 10G port; include patch leads when testing the channel. For the NETGEAR XS728T specifically, NETGEAR recommends Cat 6a or Cat 7 above 45 m (148 ft). For a new copper run, Cat 6A is a straightforward choice, but verify the equipment and installed channel. |
| SFP+ DAC | Compatible SFP+ ports at both ends and a supported direct-attach copper cable assembly. | Often considered for short links between nearby equipment. Check the supported DAC and intended reach with both device manufacturers; there is no universal distance established here. |
| SFP+ optics and fiber | Compatible SFP+ ports, supported optical transceivers at both ends, and fiber that matches the optical specification. | Choose the fiber type and optics for the required reach, and confirm compatibility with both devices. SFP+ is a port format, not a guarantee that any transceiver will work. |
IEEE’s 802.3an-2006 page describes the 100 m 10GBASE-T reach and marks that amendment superseded. For a deployment, follow the specifications and installation guidance for the specific equipment and cabling in use.
Count ports and match them to the network layout
Count every endpoint that needs a 10GbE link, then include any 10GbE connections between switches or to a server or storage device. Check how many ports are available in the required format: RJ45 10GBASE-T, SFP+, or a combination. A NETGEAR XS728T support page, for example, documents 24 copper 10-Gigabit ports and four SFP sockets; that is a model-specific configuration, not a general recommendation for how many ports to buy.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If a device and switch use different port types, do not assume that a module or adapter will bridge the gap. Confirm that the device supports the intended module and link arrangement. For SFP+ copper modules, reach is also module-specific: Cisco lists up to 30 m for its cited 10GBASE-T SFP+ module. That figure does not define a universal SFP+ limit.

A 10GbE local network does not make an internet connection run at 10Gb/s. Internet throughput also depends on the service from your provider, the gateway or router’s WAN and LAN ports, and its ability to route traffic at the required speed. A network may therefore have 10GbE links between local devices while its internet connection is slower.

Before connecting the network
- List the devices that need 10GbE and check each one’s interface type and host compatibility.
- Choose a switch with enough 10GbE ports in the required formats for endpoints and inter-switch links.
- For RJ45 links, check cable category, channel length, installation, and the equipment maker’s guidance. For a new run, consider Cat 6A rather than assuming any existing Cat 6 channel will support 10GbE at any distance.
- For SFP+ links, verify the exact DAC or optics compatibility at both ends, then match the fiber type and reach to the selected optics.
- If internet traffic must use the faster connection, verify the provider service and the gateway’s ports and routing capability separately.
