Enhanced protection in Google Messages is an opt-in security mode for scam conversations. It adds cloud-assisted analysis for complex scam intent, on-device Gemini Nano checks for unfamiliar links on supported phones, and stronger warnings that slow you down before you open a link from an unknown number.
It does not make every message end-to-end encrypted, guarantee that every scam will be caught, or give Google unrestricted access to your chats. The protection you receive depends on your phone, country, rollout status, message type and whether you report a conversation.

What Enhanced protection adds
Google describes Enhanced protection as its most powerful defense against complex scam threats. The feature is designed for scams that unfold over several messages rather than arriving as an obvious one-line spam text. A conversation may begin with a harmless question, establish trust and only later request money, personal information or a link tap. Enhanced protection is intended to evaluate that broader context.

The first layer is an enhanced version of Scam Detection. Google says capable Gemini models in Private AI Compute can assess difficult message context and identify signs of a scammer’s intent. This is different from matching a message against a fixed list of suspicious words or known spam patterns.

The analysis is aimed at conversations with people outside your contacts, where a gradual social-engineering attempt is more likely to be unfamiliar. Existing Scam Detection already covers suspicious patterns in SMS, MMS and RCS conversations and can warn you, let you dismiss the warning, or report and block the sender. Enhanced protection adds a deeper analysis path for cases that require more context.
Smarter checks for unfamiliar links
The second layer uses Gemini Nano on the phone, together with real-time web signals, to examine unfamiliar links. A link can look plausible while leading to a fake login page, a malware download or a payment scam. The on-device model is intended to assess more than the visible wording around the URL.
This Gemini Nano layer is not available on every Android phone. Google lists it for Pixel 10 and newer, Samsung Galaxy S26 series and newer, Galaxy Z Flip/Fold8 and other selected devices. A compatible phone may still need the feature to reach your region through the rollout.

A stronger checkpoint before you tap
The third layer is a redesigned warning experience. When a link comes from a number that is not saved in your contacts, Google Messages can provide additional context and give you more time to decide instead of presenting the link as an ordinary tap target. Google lists this unfamiliar-link checkpoint for Android 6 and newer, although country and manufacturer availability can differ.
The checkpoint is a pause, not a verdict. You can still choose to continue, and a legitimate link from a new contact can trigger the same caution as a malicious one.

Enhanced protection versus ordinary Spam Protection
Enhanced protection builds on Google Messages’ existing Spam Protection rather than replacing it. The two modes differ in scope, processing and device requirements.
| Capability | Basic Spam Protection and Scam Detection | Enhanced protection |
|---|---|---|
| Primary target | Known spam patterns in SMS, MMS and RCS conversations, especially messages from people outside your contacts | Complex or novel scam conversations in which intent develops across messages, plus unfamiliar links |
| Processing | On-device machine-learning models; Google may receive a message URL to check whether the link is malicious and may ephemerally process unencrypted content for spam prevention and model improvement | Private AI Compute for cloud Gemini analysis, plus on-device Gemini Nano link analysis on supported phones |
| User response | Dismiss the warning, or report and block the sender | More context and extra time before opening an unfamiliar link, alongside the existing reporting and blocking controls |
| Default state | Google says basic Scam Detection is part of Spam Protection and is on by default where the setting is available | Opt-in |
| Device scope | Google does not publish one single device list for the baseline feature; availability follows Google Messages and Spam Protection support | Private AI Compute Scam Detection: Pixel 6 and newer, Galaxy S24 series and newer, Galaxy Z Flip/Fold6 and newer, and other Android devices with AICore. Gemini Nano link checks require the narrower list described above |
Because these layers have different requirements, a phone may receive the unfamiliar-link warning without receiving the cloud-assisted analysis, or receive the cloud-assisted analysis without Gemini Nano link checks.

Does Enhanced protection read your texts?
Automated scam detection has to inspect message information to identify a suspicious conversation. The important question is where that processing occurs and what happens to the data.
What Google says about Private AI Compute
For Enhanced protection’s cloud analysis, Google says the data is encrypted inside a dedicated Private AI Compute environment and is inaccessible to anyone else, including Google. In that design, Gemini evaluates the conversation without exposing the analyzed content to ordinary Google systems or human reviewers.
This is Google’s description of the service architecture, not a promise that no message information is ever processed. The feature must receive enough context to evaluate a potential scam, and the cloud-assisted layer is specifically intended for cases that cannot be handled by simpler on-device pattern matching.

How baseline Spam Protection handles data
Google Messages Help describes several kinds of processing for ordinary Spam Protection:
- Known spam patterns are evaluated with machine-learning models on your device.
- A message URL may be uploaded to Google so the service can verify that the link is not malicious.
- Unencrypted message contents may be processed ephemerally for spam prevention and model improvement.
These statements mean that “on-device” is not a blanket description of every Spam Protection operation. URL verification and other narrowly described functions can involve Google’s servers.
What changes when you report spam
If you use the report-spam control, Google says the reported message and its contents are sent to Google for analysis. That is a deliberate user action and is different from the normal privacy-preserving processing described for the feature. Do not report a conversation if you are unwilling to send its contents for that purpose.
Is Google Messages still end-to-end encrypted?
Sometimes. Google Messages provides end-to-end encryption for eligible RCS chats when both participants use Google Messages, RCS chat is enabled and the conversation has an active data or Wi-Fi connection. A lock icon in the conversation indicates that encryption is active.
SMS and MMS do not receive Google Messages’ end-to-end encryption. An RCS conversation can also downgrade when RCS is unavailable or the phone loses data access. At that point, the messages may be sent as SMS or MMS, with different privacy protections.

Enhanced protection does not convert an SMS or MMS thread into an encrypted RCS chat. Scam analysis and transport encryption are separate systems: one helps identify suspicious content, while the other protects an eligible message while it travels between participants.
Which phones can use each layer?
Google’s announcement separates the requirements by capability. The following list reflects the device categories Google names, not a guarantee that every model in a category has received the feature.
| Enhanced-protection layer | Devices named by Google | Availability qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Private AI Compute Scam Detection | Pixel 6 and newer; Samsung Galaxy S24 series and newer; Galaxy Z Flip/Fold6 and newer; other Android devices with AICore | Rollout is in the coming weeks; country and manufacturer availability may vary |
| Gemini Nano unfamiliar-link checks | Pixel 10 and newer; Samsung Galaxy S26 series and newer; Galaxy Z Flip/Fold8; other selected devices | Requires a device that supports the relevant Gemini Nano capability; rollout and regional restrictions still apply |
| Unfamiliar-link checkpoint | Android 6 and newer | Google says the feature may not be available in every country |
The Android version alone is therefore not enough to predict the full experience. A newer phone may support the basic checkpoint but lack the hardware or AICore support needed for one of the AI analysis layers.

Check the baseline Spam Protection setting
- Open Google Messages.
- Open Messages settings.
- Go to Protection & Safety.
- Open Spam protection.
Google says Spam Protection can be turned off from this setting when the option is available. Turning it off removes the baseline spam-protection behavior on that device, including its ordinary Scam Detection warnings. Enhanced protection is separately described as opt-in, so its availability and controls may appear only after the rollout reaches your phone.
Recognize an active encryption state
Open the conversation details or compose view and look for the lock icon. The icon is the practical indicator that the current RCS conversation is end-to-end encrypted. If the thread has changed to SMS or MMS, do not assume the previous RCS protection still applies.

Use the warning controls carefully
For a suspicious conversation, the existing Scam Detection warning lets you dismiss it or report and block the sender. If you report the thread, remember that Google says the message and its contents are submitted for analysis. If the sender is legitimate, dismissing the warning avoids that report submission while leaving you responsible for deciding whether to continue the conversation.
What Enhanced protection cannot guarantee
It is not a perfect scam detector
Google has not published a feature-specific detection rate, false-positive rate or independent accuracy test for Enhanced protection. The only named volume figure in the announcement is that AI-powered Scam Detection in Phone by Google and Google Messages flags more than 5 million suspected scam calls and texts every month. That is a combined monthly figure, not a success rate and not a count of scams uniquely caught by Enhanced protection.
A warning system can miss a carefully written scam, and it can warn on a legitimate message that resembles a known abuse pattern. Treat the warning as a risk signal, not proof that a sender is malicious or trustworthy.

Basic Scam Detection is described for SMS, MMS and RCS conversations, while end-to-end encryption applies only to qualifying RCS chats. A thread’s protections can change when the sender is not in your contacts, when RCS is unavailable or when a link arrives from a device that lacks the relevant AI capability.
It does not remove the need for safe decisions
Do not enter a password, one-time code, payment details or recovery phrase through a link merely because Google Messages allows it. Verify an unexpected request through a separate, trusted channel. An attacker can use a new domain, a compromised legitimate account or a conversation that appears normal enough to avoid an automated warning.
Why the feature may be missing or behave differently
- Rollout timing: Google says the release is happening over the coming weeks, so an eligible phone may not have the switch immediately.
- Country restrictions: Google warns that some features may not be available in all countries.
- Manufacturer implementation: Android AICore support and other device-level requirements vary by manufacturer.
- Layer-specific hardware: The Gemini Nano link layer has a much narrower device list than the unfamiliar-link checkpoint.
- Conversation state: A chat that has fallen back from RCS to SMS or MMS no longer has RCS end-to-end encryption.
- Contact status: The strongest unfamiliar-link pause is designed around numbers that are not saved in your contacts.
If a warning seems inconsistent, first identify which layer you are seeing: a known-pattern Spam Protection alert, a Gemini-assisted unfamiliar-link check or the general checkpoint. They have different device and conversation requirements, so inconsistent behavior does not necessarily indicate a malfunction.
Bottom line
Enhanced protection makes Google Messages more capable at spotting scams that develop over time. Its major additions are Private AI Compute analysis for complex scam intent, Gemini Nano and web-signal checks for unfamiliar links on selected phones, and a more deliberate warning before you open a link from an unknown number. The limits are just as important: availability is fragmented, SMS and MMS remain outside Google Messages’ end-to-end encryption, reporting a conversation sends its contents to Google, and no published statistic proves that the feature catches every scam or avoids every false alarm.
