The stated protection includes plaintext prompts, webpage material you share with Leo, and generated responses while they remain in that protected path.
That guarantee has a firm boundary. E2EE protects the communication and inference route, not the device where you type or read. Malware, a compromised operating system or browser, screenshots, clipboard copies, extensions, local history and anything you send to another service can still expose the information. It also does not automatically apply to every Leo model or feature.

What Brave Leo’s E2EE actually means
In a conventional hosted AI service, a browser sends a prompt to a provider’s servers, where software decrypts it before generating an answer. Brave’s announced GLM 5.3 Flash design changes where that decryption is permitted. The browser encrypts the request locally, and the decryption key is released only after the browser verifies an attested TEE with the expected hardware, code and model measurements.
A TEE is a hardware-isolated execution area. Its purpose here is to keep plaintext prompts, shared context and responses away from the surrounding operating system, cloud-hosting layer and service operators. Attestation is the check that the claimed environment is really running the approved configuration; it is not simply a promise made by a server.

Brave’s Oct. 15, 2026 announcement describes the boundary this way: “Your Brave browser encrypts each prompt on your device, before leaving your device, such that only an attested Trusted Execution Environment (TEE) can decrypt your prompts and run confidential LLM inference on it.” Brave also says, “Neither Brave, NEAR AI, nor the cloud host can read it,” referring to the prompt protected by the OHTTP and TEE key path.
How a protected Leo request travels
- Verification comes first. The browser obtains a key only after checking the TEE’s hardware identity and measured code and model state. If the attested environment does not match what is expected, the key should not be released.
- The browser seals the content. Leo encrypts the prompt on the device before transmission. Any webpage content or highlighted material that you explicitly share with Leo is part of the request and is intended to receive the same protection.
- Oblivious HTTP carries ciphertext. The encrypted request is sent using Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP). The design separates the network relay from the AI service so the model operator does not receive the user’s IP address with the request.
- Brave’s AI Gateway relays the request. The gateway forwards ciphertext to the inference service. The documented IP-separation property is that the gateway hides your IP address from NEAR AI; it is not a claim that every network participant loses all network metadata.
- The attested TEE decrypts and runs inference. Inside the Nvidia-backed, hardware-isolated environment, the request is decrypted and GLM 5.3 Flash generates a response. The intended result is that plaintext is available only within that approved execution boundary.
- The answer returns through the protected route. Leo sends the generated response back through the protected path. During that path, Brave says the plaintext should not be readable by Brave, NEAR AI or the cloud host.
This is confidentiality enforced by cryptography plus hardware attestation. It is different from ordinary transport encryption, where data is protected while moving between systems but can be readable by the service that receives it.
What the encryption protects
| Data or property | Protection described for the GLM 5.3 Flash E2EE path |
|---|---|
| Prompt text | The browser encrypts the prompt before it leaves the device; plaintext is intended to be readable only inside the attested TEE. |
| Webpage material shared with Leo | Page content or highlighted text included in the Leo request is covered while it travels through the documented encrypted inference path. |
| Generated response | The response is returned through the protected path and is intended to remain unreadable to the listed infrastructure operators while handled there. |
| Model and execution integrity | Attestation checks the expected hardware, code and model measurements before the browser receives the decryption key. |
| IP exposure to NEAR AI | Brave’s AI Gateway relays the request and hides the user’s IP address from NEAR AI. |
The IP feature deserves separate attention. Content confidentiality and identity separation are related but different. OHTTP can prevent the AI provider from pairing a request with the connecting IP address, while the relay still performs a network-forwarding role. Do not interpret “IP hidden from NEAR AI” as “all metadata disappears” or as a guarantee that no party can observe connection timing, request volume or account-side signals.

What E2EE does not protect
Your endpoint
Encryption begins after the browser has received your keystrokes and ends before you read or copy the answer. Malware can capture a prompt as you type, inspect browser memory, take a screenshot or read a clipboard entry. A compromised operating system can observe the browser before encryption or after decryption. An untrusted extension may also access page content, keystrokes or rendered answers depending on its permissions and the browser state.
Local artifacts are outside the narrow network promise as well. Browser history, downloaded files, crash data, screenshots and notes you create can reveal a conversation even when the remote inference path is correctly protected. E2EE cannot repair an already-compromised device.
Every Leo model and feature
The Oct. 15, 2026 announcement names GLM 5.3 Flash. It does not establish that every model offered through Leo uses the same E2EE implementation. Brave’s model documentation records changing hosting arrangements and model-specific privacy behavior, so a statement about GLM 5.3 Flash should not be carried over to another selection without checking that model’s current description.

This qualification matters historically. On Nov. 20, 2025, Brave described a Nightly-only TEE experiment using DeepSeek V3.1, with a green verified label after Brave performed verification. That experiment demonstrates an earlier stage of the approach; it is not proof that all later or different Leo routes have identical guarantees.
Information you deliberately disclose elsewhere
If you copy a Leo answer into email, a document, a support ticket or another AI service, that destination receives the copied text under its own rules. The same applies when you paste sensitive material into Leo after first obtaining it from another service.
Brave’s privacy policy says contextual use may send the current page or highlighted text when you invoke that feature. The policy also says feedback can include the full current conversation, the selected model, browser version and subscription status. Sending feedback is therefore a separate disclosure decision, not an extension of the limited E2EE promise.

Accuracy, safety and professional secrecy
Encryption controls who is intended to read data; it does not make an answer accurate, unbiased or safe. Leo can still misunderstand a document, omit a qualification or generate an unsafe recommendation. E2EE is not a substitute for a doctor, lawyer, accountant, security professional or an organization’s formal handling policy. If a workplace or regulated process forbids entering certain data into an AI assistant, encryption alone does not override that rule.
All metadata
The documented design specifically addresses prompt confidentiality inside the inference path and IP separation from NEAR AI. It does not establish that timing, traffic volume, browser characteristics, subscription information, model selection or local-device activity are invisible to every participant. Use Brave’s current model documentation and privacy policy for the exact feature path you are using.

For the announced GLM 5.3 Flash E2EE route, Brave says the encrypted prompt and response are protected from plaintext reading by Brave, NEAR AI and the cloud host while they are handled through the attested TEE path. That is the practical answer to “Can Brave read the chat?” within the stated design: Brave says those parties cannot read the plaintext there.
Best Value
The answer is not a blanket statement about every Leo interaction. A different model, a feature that sends contextual data, a feedback submission or a local compromise can create a different exposure. The safest interpretation is therefore conditional: the selected model and feature must be on the documented E2EE path, and the endpoint must remain trustworthy.
Does Leo hide your prompt from the AI provider?
For GLM 5.3 Flash as described on Oct. 15, 2026, the provider-facing design has two protections. OHTTP encrypts the request before it leaves the browser, and the AI Gateway separates the user’s IP address from NEAR AI. The attested TEE then decrypts the request for inference.
That means NEAR AI is not supposed to receive a readable prompt together with your IP address through this route. It does not mean the provider is uninvolved: the TEE still executes the model, and the system necessarily handles an encrypted request, a response and network traffic. It also does not prove that another model or an older hosting arrangement follows the same rules.

How to use the protection without defeating it
- Confirm the model. Before sending sensitive material, check Leo’s current model selector and verify that the selected model is the one documented for E2EE—GLM 5.3 Flash in Brave’s Oct. 15, 2026 announcement.
- Check the current privacy description. Model hosting and retention arrangements can change. Read the model-specific explanation and Brave’s privacy policy rather than relying on an older article or a prior session.
- Share only the page context you need. Highlighting text or sharing a page deliberately sends that context to Leo. Avoid including credentials, private keys, customer records or unrelated tabs.
- Keep the endpoint clean. Update the operating system and browser, remove extensions you do not trust and treat screenshots, clipboard managers and local notes as possible copies of the conversation.
- Use feedback deliberately. Feedback may include the full current conversation plus model, browser-version and subscription details. Submit it only when that disclosure is acceptable.
- Control downstream copies. Once you export or paste an answer elsewhere, evaluate that destination’s access, retention and sharing rules separately.
These steps do not add a new cryptographic guarantee. They keep the information from leaving the narrower E2EE boundary through ordinary user actions or endpoint weaknesses.
What changed between Brave’s earlier experiment and the current announcement?
| Date | Brave-described deployment | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Nov. 20, 2025 | Nightly-only experiment using DeepSeek V3.1 with TEE verification and a green verified label. | Brave had demonstrated a TEE-based confidential-inference approach in a limited test channel. |
| Oct. 15, 2026 | GLM 5.3 Flash E2EE announced for Release, Beta and Nightly, using OHTTP source encryption and attestation-gated key release. | The announced availability and mechanism for the current GLM 5.3 Flash path. |
Brave’s model documentation also records that hosting details have changed. A June 30, 2025 update described Claude models being hosted through Brave infrastructure. That historical note is why model-specific claims must remain model-specific: an older description of one provider or hosting arrangement is not evidence about the current GLM 5.3 Flash implementation.
A practical threat-model checklist
- Trying to stop the AI provider from reading plaintext: the announced GLM 5.3 Flash TEE path is designed for this.
- Trying to stop Brave or the cloud host from reading plaintext: Brave says the attested TEE and encrypted relay path provide that protection while the request is handled there.
- Trying to prevent the provider from seeing your IP: the AI Gateway is intended to hide it from NEAR AI.
- Trying to protect against malware or a hostile extension: E2EE does not cover this endpoint threat.
- Trying to keep a conversation out of screenshots, history or clipboard logs: E2EE does not cover local copies.
- Trying to guarantee that every Leo model has identical privacy: the announcement does not support that conclusion; verify the selected model.
- Trying to guarantee correct or professionally suitable advice: encryption provides no such assurance.
The precise bottom line
Brave’s announced GLM 5.3 Flash implementation protects plaintext prompts, deliberately shared webpage content and generated responses by encrypting them in the browser and permitting decryption only inside an attested, hardware-isolated TEE. OHTTP adds IP separation from NEAR AI. The guarantee stops at the endpoint, at user-directed disclosures such as feedback and copying, at metadata not covered by the design, and at Leo models or features that are not documented as using this path.
