What Elsa and NEO Provide—and What Your .NET App Must Own

Elsa Workflows and Workflow Engine NEO both coordinate processes in .NET, but neither removes the need for application code. Elsa supplies workflow execution and authoring options; the components you select determine how management, persistence, scheduling, and hosting work. NEO is a commercial, embeddable product that adds facilities such as an HTTP API and multitenancy-related features. In either case, your application still owns its identity model, domain services, and protected business actions.

What each engine does—and what stays with your application

The practical comparison is not simply which engine has more features. It is which responsibilities the engine handles and which your team must implement, configure, secure, and operate around it.

Elsa: workflow execution with a selectable host architecture

Elsa describes workflows as executable activity graphs. You can define them in .NET code, visually with Elsa Studio, or declaratively in JSON. Its core includes execution contexts, scheduling primitives, inputs and outputs, variables, bookmarks, serialization, and execution pipelines. Built-in control-flow families include sequences, conditions, loops, parallelism, flowcharts, and state machines. These are workflow building blocks, not replacements for your application’s domain services and integrations. Elsa documentation · Elsa core documentation

Execution and workflow management are distinct concerns in Elsa’s documentation. Management services can store, publish, validate, serialize, import, export, and materialize definitions and instances. The documented default stores are in-memory; EF Core persistence can replace them. A host therefore needs only the components its requirements call for—not every available runtime, management, persistence, dispatch, scheduler, server, or Studio component. Elsa workflow management

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That flexibility also means the deployment boundary is yours to design. In Optimajet’s comparison, Elsa waits are represented by workflow state and bookmarks, while multi-node time scheduling is described as requiring Quartz.NET or Hangfire with a shared job store. The same vendor comparison says that, in its approval scenario, the host or an existing task platform supplies assignment, permissions, inbox, forms, and business audit. Those are scenario-specific claims from the NEO vendor, not independent findings. Optimajet’s Elsa and NEO comparison

Workflow Engine NEO: embedded process facilities, with application-owned behavior

NEO is an Optimajet product based on Workflow Engine; it is not another name for the base engine or just its HTTP API. It is installed and hosted in your ASP.NET Core infrastructure, with your database and identity layer. Its HTTP API is useful when a web or mobile frontend, or separate services, need to call workflow over HTTP. If your .NET application calls the runtime in the same process, Optimajet says the base Workflow Engine may be the relevant option instead. NEO adds HTTP Data and RPC API capabilities, multitenancy, multi-server clustering, and forms integration, with details dependent on edition. Those additions do not make the host application’s security and domain model disappear. The product page advises keeping sensitive behavior in reviewed server-side C# actions or a curated action catalog; the application remains responsible for authorization, side effects, data access, and integration boundaries.

Where the vendor comparison draws the line

Optimajet’s August 17, 2026 comparison of Elsa 3.7 and NEO v22 frames NEO as a fit for business-object lifecycles and participant decisions, and Elsa as a fit for technical orchestration, events, integrations, background work, and tool calls. The author is identified as a NEO product-team lead, so treat this as a vendor’s decision framework—not a neutral benchmark or universal feature verdict. Test the distinction against your own workflow. Read the comparison and its stated version context

Decision area What to establish in your proof of concept
Workflow shape Does the process mainly coordinate business-object state and human decisions, or technical events, integrations, and background work? The vendor comparison positions NEO toward the former and Elsa toward the latter.
Human work Identify who builds assignment, authorization, forms, inbox, deadlines, and business audit. The vendor comparison says NEO supplies more of these facilities for its approval example; Elsa users commonly connect an external task or forms layer.
Persistence and recovery Determine what definitions, instances, bookmarks, timers, and execution logs persist, where they are stored, and how a waiting process resumes after a restart.
Hosting and integration Decide whether the workflow runs as an in-process library, through an API embedded in your application, or in a server arrangement. Assign ownership for the API, database, scheduling, identity, and operations.
Definition changes Test how published versions affect running instances and who handles migration. The vendor comparison says both products avoid silently changing existing instances but use different migration workflows; verify behavior against the versions you plan to deploy.
Licensing and support Elsa is presented as open-source .NET libraries; NEO has commercial subscription and perpetual editions. Confirm current license terms and edition capabilities directly before making a purchase decision.

What to prototype before choosing

Use a representative process that includes a long wait, a failure or retry, a human decision if relevant, and a change to the workflow definition. The goal is to expose the code and operational work hidden behind the diagram.

  1. Model the real process. Implement one representative workflow in each product, including its business-specific actions and integrations. Check whether its shape maps naturally to the engine.
  2. Trace human tasks. If people approve or act, record which component supplies assignment, authorization, forms, inbox behavior, deadlines, and audit data.
  3. Test durability. Persist a workflow that is waiting, restart the host, and verify what resumes. Include timers and external events if the actual process uses them.
  4. Exercise definition evolution. Publish a changed definition while instances are running. Observe which version each instance follows and document the migration steps your team must own.
  5. Map the deployment boundary. List the database, scheduler, API, identity system, task interface, and monitoring or operational components your production design needs. Mark which are provided by the selected product and which your team supplies.
  6. Review licensing for the intended use. Confirm the exact edition and terms for your deployment, including any SaaS, internal-use, or redistribution requirements.

How to interpret the product and licensing claims

NEO’s editions documentation describes subscription and perpetual options and contexts including public SaaS, internal applications, and enterprise or OEM redistribution. The available terms and capabilities can differ by edition and may change; check the current editions page for your planned use rather than assuming that a feature applies to every license.
