What Electrically Tunable Magnetism in a 2D Semiconductor Means

Electrically tunable magnetism means that a voltage applied through a gate changes a material’s magnetic behavior. In an atomically thin or few-layer semiconductor, the gate may add or remove charge carriers, create an electric field, or do both. The measurable result can be a change in magnetization, magnetic anisotropy, coercive field, ordering temperature, magnetic phase or the speed and amplitude of magnetization dynamics. It does not necessarily mean a complete magnetic on/off switch.

What the phrase means

A semiconductor controls electrical current through its available charge carriers. A magnet has an ordered spin state that produces magnetization. An electrically tunable magnetic semiconductor combines those properties: an external voltage changes the electronic system, and the altered electronic system changes one or more magnetic properties.

The term 2D semiconductor generally refers to an atomically thin or few-layer crystal, often a van der Waals material. Its small thickness allows an electric field from a nearby gate to influence a substantial fraction of the material rather than being screened far from the surface. This geometry makes electrical control unusually effective, but it does not make all 2D materials equivalent. Layer number, crystal quality, defects, contacts, dielectric environment and temperature can all change the response.

  • Changing the magnitude or direction of magnetization.
  • Rotating the preferred magnetization axis by changing magnetic anisotropy.
  • Changing coercivity, the field required to reverse magnetization.
  • Raising or lowering the temperature at which magnetic order disappears.
  • Moving between magnetic phases, such as antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic order.
  • Changing the amplitude, frequency or effective field of magnetization precession.

Those outcomes are different measurements. A paper showing a gate-dependent precession amplitude has not necessarily demonstrated a nonvolatile memory switch, and a calculated change in anisotropy is not the same as a working device.

How a gate changes magnetism

Electrostatic carrier doping

In a gated device, an insulating layer separates an electrode from the 2D crystal. Applying a voltage induces charge in the crystal. The added electrons or holes shift the Fermi level and change which electronic states are occupied. Because exchange interactions between spins depend on those states, the balance between competing magnetic interactions can change.

Carrier density is often expressed in units of electrons per square centimetre. The sign convention must be checked: in the 2024 Cr2Ge2Te6 calculation by Menichetti, Calandra and Polini, positive density (ρ > 0) denotes hole doping and negative density (ρ < 0) denotes electron doping. Their first-principles results found a bipolar response: both carrier types could alter magnetism, but the calculated response was considerably more robust for holes.

That study calculated that the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy vanished at an electron density of approximately −7.5 × 1013 e cm−2. At that point, the authors said a localized Heisenberg-type spin description breaks down. This is a material- and model-specific result, not a universal switching threshold for 2D magnets.

Direct electric-field effects

A gate also produces an electric field perpendicular to the layers. That field can modify orbital energies, layer polarization, hybridization and spin–orbit-related interactions even when the net carrier density is held nearly constant. In multilayer crystals, the field may make the top and bottom layers electronically inequivalent, changing their magnetic coupling.

Carrier doping and direct field effects are therefore distinct mechanisms. A single gate voltage commonly changes both at once. Experiments that use independent top and bottom gates can vary carrier density and perpendicular displacement field separately, making it easier to identify which mechanism dominates. The relative contribution is material- and device-dependent; “the gate changed magnetism” alone does not identify the cause.

Why the response can be nonlinear

Magnetic exchange, anisotropy and conductivity need not vary smoothly with gate voltage. A small change in occupancy can cross a band edge, alter a competing exchange pathway or destabilize an ordered phase. Screening can also change as the material becomes more conductive. Consequently, a gate sweep may produce thresholds, hysteresis, electron–hole asymmetry or a response that depends strongly on temperature and an applied magnetic field.

What experiments have actually shown

CrI3: changing the magnetic state

Experiments on chromium triiodide (CrI3) established that electrical gating can change magnetization. In bilayer CrI3, gate control has been reported to modify the magnetic state and enable an antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition. This is a phase change in a particular layered magnet, not evidence that every semiconductor can be switched between those two states.

CrI3 also illustrates why layer count matters. Interlayer exchange can differ from intralayer exchange, so a monolayer, bilayer and thicker flake may have different ground states and different gate responses. A comparison is meaningful only when the layer number, dielectric stack and measurement temperature are specified.

Cr2Ge2Te6: theory and ultrafast dynamics

Cr2Ge2Te6 provides two complementary examples. The 2024 Physical Review B study calculated how carrier density changes its magnetic properties, including the anisotropy result described above. Calculations reveal possible mechanisms and phase boundaries, but they are not a device demonstration.

A separate 2024 experiment used a dual-gated Cr2Ge2Te6 device and time-resolved Faraday measurements to study optically induced magnetization dynamics. By controlling charge density and displacement field, the researchers reported a one-order-of-magnitude change in precession amplitude and a greater-than-10% change in the internal effective field. These figures describe that specific optical experiment; they are not general performance specifications for Cr2Ge2Te6 or other 2D magnets.

Co-doped black phosphorus: a room-temperature semiconductor result

Fu and colleagues reported in Nature Communications on 20 November 2025 that cobalt-doped few-layer black phosphorus devices showed ferromagnetism up to room temperature while retaining semiconducting characteristics and high mobility. Their abstract reports a mobility of approximately 1,000 cm2 V−1 s−1. The work also demonstrated tunnelling magnetoresistance in a magnetic tunnel junction.

This is an engineered, doped black-phosphorus system. “Up to room temperature” applies to the reported devices and conditions; it should not be paraphrased as proof that ordinary undoped black phosphorus, or 2D semiconductors in general, are room-temperature ferromagnets. Retaining semiconducting transport while introducing magnetic order is significant because many magnetic 2D materials are either difficult to tune electrically or not semiconducting.

Fe3GeTe2: an important but different comparison

The 2025 review Magnetoelectric effect in van der Waals magnets discusses ionic-gate results in Fe3GeTe2. In one cited result, a four-layer sample reached a Curie temperature of about 310 K at a gate voltage of 2.1 V.

Fe3GeTe2 is metallic, not a semiconductor. Its result demonstrates electrical tuning in a van der Waals magnet, including a near-room-temperature ordering temperature, but it cannot be used as evidence that a 2D semiconductor has the same behavior. Comparing it with Co-doped black phosphorus requires keeping the semiconductor-versus-metal distinction explicit.

How to compare demonstrations without mixing unlike results

A useful comparison records the variables that determine what a headline number means:

Comparison axis Why it matters
Material and composition Doping, defects and chemical substitution can create magnetism or change exchange interactions.
Layer count Monolayers and multilayers may have different interlayer coupling and magnetic phases.
Semiconducting or metallic behavior A gate response in a metal is not direct evidence for a gate-tunable semiconductor.
Gate architecture Top, bottom, dual and ionic gates provide different carrier ranges and electric fields.
Voltage and carrier density Voltage is device-specific; carrier density is the more transferable quantity, when measured.
Independent field control Dual gates can separate carrier doping from perpendicular displacement-field effects.
Magnetic observable Magnetization, anisotropy, coercivity, Curie temperature and dynamics are not interchangeable.
Temperature and magnetic field A transition observed at low temperature may disappear near room temperature or under a different field.
Evidence type A calculation, a material measurement and a functioning device establish different claims.
Device function Magnetic order alone does not demonstrate memory retention, logic operation or useful readout.

For a room-temperature claim, ask three separate questions: Does magnetic order persist at that temperature? Does the material still behave as a useful semiconductor? Has a device function such as switching, transport readout or tunnelling magnetoresistance been demonstrated under the same conditions?

What a practical experiment requires

Device structure

Researchers typically exfoliate or grow a thin crystal, encapsulate it to limit degradation, add a gate dielectric and fabricate electrical or optical contacts. A dual-gate design is especially valuable when the goal is to distinguish carrier-density effects from displacement-field effects. Ionic gating can reach large carrier densities, but electrochemical reactions, leakage and material stability must be considered.

Measurements

Magnetic behavior can be measured through magneto-optical Kerr or Faraday rotation, transport, tunnelling magnetoresistance, vibrating-sample or other magnetometry, and time-resolved optical probes. Each method sees a different aspect of the state. For example, a hysteresis loop indicates a magnetization response, while a precession measurement probes dynamics and damping.

Controls and calibration

A convincing gate-control experiment measures gate leakage, temperature, applied magnetic field and the actual carrier density where possible. It should check whether Joule heating, trapped charge, contact resistance or an electrochemical change could mimic a magnetic response. Sweeping voltage in both directions and repeating after temperature cycles helps reveal hysteresis and irreversible effects.

What “room-temperature magnetism” does and does not promise

Room-temperature ferromagnetism is a demanding milestone because thermal fluctuations weaken magnetic order. The Co-doped black-phosphorus report is notable precisely because it combines a room-temperature claim with semiconducting behavior and approximately 1,000 cm2 V−1 s−1 mobility in the reported devices. The Fe3GeTe2 result near 310 K is also notable, but it concerns a metallic van der Waals magnet.

Neither result establishes a universal room-temperature platform. A technology would additionally need reproducible synthesis, stable interfaces, low leakage, controllable switching, readout, endurance and integration with other circuit elements. Those engineering requirements are separate from proving that magnetic order exists.

Why researchers want electrical control

Voltage control can, in principle, use less energy than generating a large magnetic field or driving a sustained current. It could enable nonvolatile magnetic memory, spin-based logic, magnonic signal processing, opto-magnonic devices and electrically adjustable microwave or neuromorphic components.

A 2024 Reviews of Modern Physics survey places 2D-material work within a broader field that includes spin-transfer-torque and spin-orbit-torque memory, MESO transistor concepts, microwave emitters, spin diodes, skyrmion devices and neuromorphic components. These are research directions and device concepts, not commercial products built from the specific materials discussed here.

Limits and common misconceptions

  • “Electrically tunable” means fully switchable. It may mean only a measurable change in anisotropy, amplitude or effective field.
  • Every gate effect is a pure electric-field effect. The same voltage can change carrier density, so the mechanisms must be separated experimentally.
  • All 2D magnets are semiconductors. Fe3GeTe2, for example, is metallic.
  • A result in one material transfers directly to another. Exchange interactions, defects, layer number and dielectric environment vary widely.
  • A calculation is equivalent to a device demonstration. Theory can predict a mechanism or threshold; an operating device must show reproducible measurements under defined conditions.
  • Room-temperature order means room-temperature memory. A material can be magnetic at 300 K without having demonstrated reliable voltage switching, retention or manufacturability.

The clearest takeaway

Electrically tunable magnetism in a 2D semiconductor is the control of magnetic properties by a gate-induced change in carriers, electric field or both. The strongest evidence to date is diverse rather than a single universal benchmark: CrI3 demonstrates gate-dependent magnetic-state changes, Cr2Ge2Te6 shows material-specific carrier and ultrafast-dynamics responses, and Co-doped black phosphorus reports ferromagnetism up to room temperature while preserving semiconductor behavior. Metallic Fe3GeTe2 provides a useful comparison but belongs to a different material class.

To interpret any new claim, identify the material, layer count, gate design, carrier density, displacement field, magnetic observable, temperature and evidence type. Those details determine whether the result is a theoretical prediction, a laboratory magnetic effect or a genuinely useful electrically controlled device.
