The Ford F-150 Lightning and Kia EV9 are the clearest electric choices identified for a family-sized pop-up camper. The Lightning has the largest published capacity, ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 pounds depending on trim and the Max Trailer Tow Package. The three-row Kia EV9 is rated from 2,000 to 5,000 pounds for braked trailers, depending on configuration. Your decision must be based on the camper’s loaded GVWR and tongue weight, the vehicle’s payload after passengers and luggage, and the exact hitch and brake equipment—not on the vehicle badge alone.
Which electric vehicles have enough capacity?
Two models stand out in the available specifications: Ford’s F-150 Lightning pickup and Kia’s EV9 three-row SUV. Their ratings are not interchangeable across every version. A Lightning XLT, Flash, Lariat or Platinum can have a different limit, and the EV9’s rating changes with trim and equipment.

| Vehicle and configuration | Published towing rating | Family-oriented advantage | Most suitable use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford F-150 Lightning XLT | 5,000 lb without the Max Trailer Tow Package; 7,700 lb with the package | Large passenger cabin and pickup cargo bed | Lighter pop-ups when the package is absent; heavier campers when equipped |
| Ford F-150 Lightning Flash or Lariat | 7,700 lb without the package; 10,000 lb with the Max Trailer Tow Package | Large cabin, open bed and substantial rating reserve | Families seeking the greatest published margin |
| Ford F-150 Lightning Platinum | 8,500 lb, with the package standard | Large cabin and pickup cargo bed | High-trim buyers who want strong capacity without adding the package |
| Kia EV9 | 2,000 to 5,000 lb braked, depending on listed trim; 1,000 lb unbraked in listed configurations | Three rows of seats in an SUV body | Lighter pop-up campers when the exact EV9 rating exceeds the trailer’s loaded weight |
These are manufacturer-published limits for specified configurations. They are not a promise that every vehicle carrying the same name can tow the same amount. Confirm the model year, drive configuration, trim, receiver rating and installed equipment on the vehicle’s certification label and owner documentation before buying a camper.
Match the camper’s real weight, not its brochure dry weight
A pop-up may look small when folded, but its legal towing weight is the loaded gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR): the maximum permitted weight of the trailer with water, propane, battery, cooking gear, clothing, food, bicycles and every other item aboard. “Dry” or unloaded weight leaves out the cargo a family normally adds.

Use GVWR as the first screening number
Find the camper manufacturer’s loaded GVWR on the data plate or official specifications. Compare that number with the exact vehicle’s tow rating. The trailer should remain below the tow rating with a meaningful reserve; do not plan to operate at the limit simply because the arithmetic is technically possible. A dealer’s estimate or an online listing is not a substitute for the trailer’s own rating plate.
Check tongue weight against payload
The hitch presses down on the vehicle through the trailer’s tongue weight. That load consumes payload capacity along with the driver, passengers, child seats, luggage, coolers, pets and hitch hardware. A truck can have a high tow rating yet run out of payload before it reaches that rating.
Use this check:
- Start with the vehicle’s stated payload for the exact truck or SUV.
- Subtract every occupant and item carried inside the vehicle or in the Lightning’s bed.
- Subtract the loaded tongue weight and the weight of the hitch or weight-distribution hardware.
- Keep the resulting payload figure at or below the vehicle’s certified limit.
Obtain the actual tongue weight from a scale or the camper manufacturer’s loaded specification. Do not assume a brochure percentage applies after your family has packed the trailer.
Account for brakes and connectors
Determine whether the camper has electric brakes and whether the vehicle is approved and equipped to control them. The EV9 figures above distinguish braked and unbraked trailers; a 1,000-pound unbraked limit in listed configurations is not permission to tow a heavier camper without a functioning brake system.

Check the electrical connector type, ground, lighting circuits and brake-controller compatibility before delivery. Ford lists a Smart Trailer Tow Connector for the Lightning, along with Pro Trailer Backup Assist and Trailer Reverse Guidance. Those features can simplify hookup and reversing, but they do not raise the truck’s weight or payload limits.
Ford F-150 Lightning: the widest margin for a family camper
How the Lightning ratings vary
Ford’s published figures are equipment-specific:
- XLT: 5,000 pounds without the Max Trailer Tow Package and 7,700 pounds with it.
- Flash and Lariat: 7,700 pounds without the package and 10,000 pounds with it.
- Platinum: 8,500 pounds, with the package standard.
The 10,000-pound figure is therefore limited to Flash or Lariat trucks fitted with the Max Trailer Tow Package. It should not be applied to an XLT without that package, or to another Lightning configuration. Ford describes the truck as delivering “full-size truck capability” with electric-vehicle acceleration, but the capability depends on the selected equipment.
Why a pickup works well for family camping
The Lightning combines a large cab with a separate cargo bed, so dirty, wet or bulky camping equipment can remain outside the passenger compartment. That does not make the bed weight-free: coolers, firewood and bikes still count toward payload. Load heavy items low and secure them so they cannot shift, and include the bed cargo when calculating the truck’s remaining capacity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich Lightning is the sensible target?
For a light pop-up, an XLT may be adequate if its 5,000-pound rating and payload both clear the loaded trailer. If the camper approaches that threshold, the Max Trailer Tow Package’s 7,700-pound XLT rating provides more room. Flash and Lariat buyers can reach 10,000 pounds with the package, while Platinum lists 8,500 pounds with the package already standard. Select by the door-label payload and the trailer’s loaded numbers, not by trim prestige.

Kia EV9: three rows for a lighter pop-up
Understand the EV9’s configuration range
Kia lists 2025 EV9 braked towing capacities from 2,000 pounds on some trims to 3,500–5,000 pounds on higher trims. Listed configurations also show a 1,000-pound unbraked limit. Because the spread is large, identify the exact trim and drivetrain before comparing it with a camper.
When the EV9 fits
The EV9 is the natural choice when three rows of seats matter more than maximum tow margin. A lighter family pop-up can fit if its loaded GVWR is below the EV9’s rating and the tongue weight leaves enough payload for all occupants and luggage. A trailer that exceeds the specific EV9’s 2,000- or 3,500-pound limit is not made acceptable by the vehicle’s larger cabin.
Questions to ask a dealer
- What is this VIN’s certified tow rating for a braked trailer?
- Is the supplied receiver rated for that figure, and is a trailer-brake controller supported?
- Which electrical connector is installed, and does it provide lighting and brake functions?
- What payload remains after any dealer-installed accessories?
Can an EV tow a pop-up with a family inside?
Yes, provided the combined weight, payload, hitch and braking calculations are within the vehicle’s certified limits. The presence of passengers does not create a separate prohibition; it reduces the payload available for tongue weight and luggage.

- Write down the camper’s loaded GVWR and measured or specified tongue weight.
- Record the vehicle’s payload rating from its door-jamb label, not a generic model brochure.
- Add the driver, every passenger, child seats, pets, bags, food and accessories carried in the vehicle.
- Add tongue weight and hitch hardware to that occupant-and-cargo total.
- Confirm the total does not exceed payload, the trailer GVWR does not exceed tow rating, and the receiver and tires are rated for the loads.
If any figure is unknown, weigh the loaded combination before a long trip. Recheck after changing water, propane, bicycles or other equipment.

How much range will towing a pop-up camper cost?
No universal towing-range penalty is published for either vehicle in the available specifications. Expect range to vary with the camper’s frontal area, speed, terrain, temperature, wind and cargo. A pop-up’s lower profile can help compared with a tall enclosed trailer, but it still adds aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance.
Plan charging around the trailer
Use the vehicle’s trip estimate as a planning aid rather than a guaranteed distance. Identify charging sites where the truck or SUV can enter, align and leave with the trailer attached. Many ordinary charging spaces require unhitching or have limited turning room; confirm access with the site operator or satellite imagery before departure.
- Begin a towing day with a full battery when practical.
- Choose stops with more energy margin than an unladen trip would require.
- Allow for headwinds, cold weather, hills and detours instead of planning to arrive at a very low state of charge.
- Keep the camper and vehicle within their weight limits; excess cargo can increase consumption and compromise handling.
Record actual energy use on your first few trips under similar speed and weather conditions. That personal baseline is more useful than applying a single percentage to every camper.

- Identify the exact vehicle: model year, trim, drivetrain, battery version, receiver and factory tow equipment.
- Identify the exact camper: loaded GVWR, tongue weight, axle rating, tire rating and whether brakes are fitted.
- Verify payload: subtract family, luggage, hitch hardware and tongue weight from the door-label payload.
- Verify the receiver: confirm its maximum trailer and tongue ratings match the intended load.
- Verify wiring: test the connector, lights, turn signals, ground and brake circuit with a 7-pin trailer wiring tester when applicable.
- Set up brake control: follow the vehicle and trailer instructions, then test braking at low speed before entering traffic.
- Load and secure: distribute cargo to maintain the camper maker’s recommended balance, keep heavy items low, and secure everything.
- Practice: use the Lightning’s available Pro Trailer Backup Assist or Trailer Reverse Guidance when equipped, and practice turning, backing and stopping in an empty area.
- Plan charging: select trailer-accessible sites and include weather, terrain and detour margin.
- Reweigh after changes: adding a battery, rooftop box, bikes or extra water can alter both payload and tongue weight.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using dry weight
Symptom: The listing appears comfortably below the tow rating, but the loaded combination feels heavy. Fix: use the camper’s loaded GVWR and weigh it with the family’s normal equipment.
Best Value
Applying the highest trim rating to every vehicle
Symptom: An XLT or EV9 is evaluated using a number published for a different package or trim. Fix: match the VIN, trim, drivetrain and tow package to the manufacturer’s table.
Ignoring payload
Symptom: The trailer is below the tow rating, yet the vehicle is overloaded with passengers and tongue weight. Fix: perform the payload subtraction using the door-label figure and actual scale weights.
Assuming a hitch solves braking or wiring
Symptom: The ball mount fits, but trailer brakes or lights do not operate correctly. Fix: verify connector compatibility, brake-control support and every circuit before towing.
Planning range like an unladen road trip
Symptom: The planned charger is unreachable after wind, hills or cold weather. Fix: add charging margin, choose trailer-friendly sites and use measured towing consumption from early trips.
Which one should a family choose?
Choose the F-150 Lightning when the camper is heavy, when you want the greatest published reserve, or when pickup-bed cargo separation is valuable. Its ratings span 5,000 to 10,000 pounds, so the Max Trailer Tow Package and exact trim are decisive.
Choose the Kia EV9 when three-row SUV seating is the priority and the camper is light enough for the specific EV9’s 2,000–5,000-pound braked rating. Verify the lower-rated configurations carefully; the EV9 name alone does not guarantee 5,000 pounds.
In either case, buy the combination that passes all four checks—loaded trailer GVWR, tongue weight, vehicle payload and equipment-specific tow rating—with room for your family’s real cargo. Then confirm brakes, connector, hitch and charging access before the first trip.
