By disrupting tropical circulation, it can reduce seasonal rain, lower rivers and groundwater, and leave forests and agricultural land hotter and more moisture-stressed. People usually ignite fires for land clearing or other purposes; drought makes those fires escape into surrounding vegetation and spread through standing rainforest.
The severe 2023 drought illustrates why a single-cause explanation fails. World Weather Attribution found that El Niño and climate change reduced rainfall by roughly similar amounts, while human-caused warming supplied additional heat and evaporation that made agricultural drought far more severe.

How El Niño changes Amazon rainfall
El Niño is a change in tropical-ocean and atmospheric circulation that redistributes heat and moisture. The result is not one uniform global rainfall pattern: some regions become wetter while others become drier. NASA describes this contrast as a defining feature of El Niño. Much of the Amazon is commonly on the dry side of that pattern, particularly during strong events, but the location and timing of the rainfall loss vary.

The Amazon basin is unusually important to the global water cycle. It occupies about 4.6% of the world’s land area yet receives approximately 13% of global continental precipitation, according to a 2024 paper in Scientific Reports. A circulation shift that removes rain from a particular season therefore affects more than a monthly rainfall total. It can alter river discharge, soil moisture, groundwater storage, vegetation stress and the length or intensity of the fire season.

Why the pattern differs across the basin
“The Amazon” covers a vast area crossing several countries and climate zones. El Niño can produce a rainfall deficit in one subregion while another has a smaller deficit, a delayed response or even wetter conditions. Season matters as well: a circulation anomaly during the local wet season has different consequences from the same anomaly during the dry season, when fuels are already prone to drying.
For that reason, a statement such as “El Niño dries the Amazon” is a useful broad tendency, not a forecast for every location. A meaningful assessment must specify the basin sector, months being examined and whether the metric is rainfall, river flow, soil moisture or another indicator.
What happened during the 2023 Amazon drought
The 2023 event was not a single, basin-wide dry spell beginning on one date. Its most damaging conditions appeared in different places and seasons.

- Southwestern Amazonia: rainfall deficits were documented during November 2022 through February 2023.
- Northern Amazonia: another major rainfall shortfall occurred during June through August 2023.
- Fire season: fire activity was especially intense in northern and western areas during the July–November dry season.
This sequence matters because hydrological stress can accumulate. If an earlier rainfall deficit lowers river levels or groundwater, a later dry season begins with less water available to forests, farms and communities. A second deficit then pushes conditions beyond what a single-season rainfall map would suggest.

Why low rivers and groundwater matter
Rainfall is only the first part of the water balance. Less rain reduces the amount entering rivers, wetlands and aquifers. Lower river levels can restrict transport and local water access, while declining water tables leave vegetation with less dependable moisture during rain-free periods. Drier soils and leaf litter also provide more continuous fuel for flames.
NASA biosphere scientist Douglas Morton described the 2023 conditions as “a classic response to El Niño,” noting lower rainfall, river levels and water tables that made it easier for fires to escape intended boundaries and burn into standing rainforest. The observation connects atmospheric forcing to the physical conditions that determine whether a fire remains confined or spreads.
From rainfall deficit to drought: two measurements that should not be confused
Meteorological drought
Meteorological drought means that precipitation is unusually low for a specified place and period. It answers the question: How far below the normal rainfall was this season or set of months? The answer depends on the baseline and the time window, so a short dry spell and a multi-season deficit are not interchangeable.
Agricultural drought
Agricultural drought measures whether crops, pasture and vegetation have enough usable moisture. It includes the rainfall deficit but also reflects temperature and evaporation. Hotter air pulls more water from soils and plants; when that extra loss is not replaced by rain, agricultural conditions deteriorate even if the rainfall reduction itself is moderate.

This distinction explains why 2023 felt more severe on the ground than a rainfall-only account would imply. World Weather Attribution estimated that climate change increased the likelihood of the 2023 meteorological drought by about ten times, while the agricultural drought was made about 30 times more likely. NOAA Climate.gov summarized the latter as approximately a one-in-50-year agricultural drought in today’s climate.
The return-interval description applies to the agricultural drought defined in that analysis, not to every dry month or every part of the basin. It should not be read as a promise that another event will occur only once in 50 years.
How drought raises Amazon wildfire risk
Drought does not usually ignite an Amazon fire by itself. Most fires begin because people intentionally burn vegetation for land clearing, pasture management, agricultural preparation or other purposes. The hazard changes after ignition.
Recommended Free Tools
- Rainfall falls below seasonal needs. Reduced precipitation leaves less water in soils, leaf litter, grasses and fallen branches.
- Rivers and water tables decline. The surrounding landscape loses accessible moisture, and forest edges or previously disturbed areas dry faster.
- Heat increases evaporation. Warmer conditions remove water from vegetation and soil more quickly, converting a rainfall deficit into a larger fuel deficit.
- A human-set fire escapes. Flames lit in a field, pasture or cleared patch can cross its intended boundary when adjacent fuels are dry.
- Fire enters standing forest. Intact rainforest is normally too moist to burn readily, but drought can dry the understory and increase the chance of spread.
The practical implication is that fire counts cannot be interpreted as a direct measurement of El Niño. Ignition policy and land use determine where fires start; weather and landscape moisture determine how far they travel and how intensely they burn.

Why the July–November period was critical in 2023
Northern and western Amazonia experienced particularly intense fire activity during the July–November dry season. That period combined seasonally limited rainfall with the accumulated effects of earlier deficits and elevated evaporative demand. The same human activity that might produce a controllable burn under wetter conditions therefore carried a greater risk of escape.

El Niño is a temporary climate event. Human-caused climate change is a persistent warming trend that raises background temperatures and changes evaporation. They can occur together, and their effects can compound rather than substitute for one another.
| Comparison axis | El Niño | Human-caused climate change |
|---|---|---|
| Primary influence | Disrupts tropical atmospheric circulation and shifts where seasonal rain falls. | Raises the baseline temperature, increasing atmospheric demand for water and evaporation. |
| Typical time pattern | A relatively short-lived event with impacts that evolve by season. | A persistent warming trend that changes the background in which individual events occur. |
| Geographic expression | Rainfall effects vary by Amazon subregion and season; some areas can respond differently. | Heat and evaporative stress can amplify moisture loss across affected areas, alongside regional circulation effects. |
| Hydrological consequences | Can lower rainfall, river levels and water tables during affected seasons. | Can intensify drying by increasing water loss from soil and vegetation after rain is reduced. |
| Fire implication | Creates drier fuels and conditions in which human-ignited fires are more likely to escape. | Makes those fuels dry faster and increases the severity of agricultural drought. |
The table does not imply that the two drivers can be separated perfectly in every location. Atlantic Ocean conditions, deforestation and local fire use also influence rainfall, moisture and fire behavior. The scientifically defensible question is therefore not “Was it El Niño or climate change?” but “How much did each factor contribute, and how did they interact with land and weather conditions?”

World Weather Attribution’s 2024 rapid analysis found that climate change increased the likelihood of the 2023 meteorological drought by about a factor of 10. For the agricultural drought, which includes heat-driven moisture loss, the estimated increase was about 30-fold. El Niño and climate change contributed roughly similar reductions in rainfall, but warming produced the extra heat and evaporation that made the agricultural impacts much larger.
Best Value
These are likelihood estimates for the defined 2023 events, not a claim that climate change caused every dry day or that El Niño was irrelevant. Attribution compares the observed event with modeled or historical conditions under different climate influences. The result supports a layered explanation: El Niño helped organize the rainfall deficit; warming raised the evaporative demand; Atlantic conditions and land-use changes affected the regional setting; and human ignition converted dry vegetation into fires.
Deforestation and land use can amplify the hazard
Forest clearing changes the continuity and type of fuel. Roads, fields, pasture and forest edges create places where people use fire and where grasses or slash can dry quickly. Once a fire reaches a dried forest edge, it may burn into standing rainforest that would be much harder to ignite under wetter conditions.
This interaction means that the same El Niño rainfall anomaly can produce different fire outcomes in two landscapes. A remote, intact and wet forest may resist ignition, while a fragmented area with repeated burning has more exposed fuel and more potential ignition points. Drought is therefore a risk multiplier, not a standalone ignition mechanism.

- Check the geography. Ask which Amazon subregion is being described; basin-wide averages can hide opposite local responses.
- Check the months. A rainfall deficit in November–February is not equivalent to one in the July–November dry season.
- Identify the drought metric. Meteorological drought tracks rain; agricultural drought adds heat and moisture loss.
- Separate ignition from spread. Human activity commonly starts fires, while dry fuels and low water availability help them escape.
- Look for hydrological evidence. River levels, groundwater, soil moisture and vegetation stress reveal impacts that rainfall totals alone may miss.
- Ask whether the claim is event-specific. The 2023 likelihood estimates apply to the analyzed 2023 drought definitions, not automatically to every El Niño.
What readers should take away
El Niño often shifts the Amazon toward less seasonal rain, but the effect is regional and seasonal rather than universal. During 2023, rainfall deficits appeared first in southwestern Amazonia and later in northern Amazonia, with severe fire activity during the northern and western dry season. Lower rain reduced river, groundwater and soil moisture reserves. Human-set fires then encountered drier fuels and were more likely to spread into standing forest.
Climate change did not replace El Niño as an explanation; it changed the conditions in which El Niño operated. The attribution evidence indicates similar rainfall reductions from the two influences, while warming-driven heat and evaporation sharply increased agricultural drought risk. Understanding future Amazon fire seasons therefore requires tracking ocean-atmosphere patterns, heat, hydrology, deforestation and ignition practices together.
