Adoption is real but uneven. A recommendation engine, a shopping assistant that prepares a cart, and an agent that actually places an order are different capabilities, with different risks and payment requirements.
For merchants, the practical question is not whether to announce an “AI strategy.” It is whether product data, permissions, payment acceptance, fraud controls, refunds, and privacy explanations are ready for software acting on a customer’s behalf. For shoppers, the important questions are what the agent is allowed to do, which data it uses, how a purchase can be reversed, and who handles a dispute.

The three ecommerce shifts shaping 2026
| Shift | What is changing | What is not yet established |
|---|---|---|
| AI-mediated shopping | Agents can search, compare, select and, in some deployments, transact within permissions set by a person. | Fully autonomous buying is not routine consumer behavior, and agent capability does not mean every merchant accepts agent-initiated orders. |
| Agent-ready payments | Payment providers are working on delegated identity, authorization, authentication, fraud handling and settlement. | No single protocol or payment method has been shown to win across merchants, countries, currencies and purchase sizes. |
| Trustworthy shopper data | Personalization and automated decisions depend on more data, increasing the value of clear explanations and meaningful controls. | Being comfortable sharing some data is not blanket consent to every use, recipient or retention period. |
These trends should be read as a capability and readiness story, not as a claim about total ecommerce revenue. The available 2026 figures come from consumer and business surveys, platform behavior, or specific transaction analyses; they do not establish an independent overall market-size number for agent-attributed ecommerce.
What “agentic commerce” means in 2026
Visa defines the term this way: “Agentic commerce is an emerging form of commerce where AI agents can discover, decide and complete purchases on a consumer’s behalf within user-defined permissions and secure controls.” The definition matters because it includes both the decision and the transaction, not merely a conversational interface.

Discovery: the agent finds options
In discovery, an AI system searches catalogs, reads product attributes, compares prices or recommends a shortlist. The shopper still visits a conventional checkout and makes the final choices. Better structured product information, current inventory and accurate delivery details make this stage more reliable, but the agent has not been authorized to spend money.
Checkout assistance: the agent prepares the order
An assistant may select a variant, fill a cart, apply a preference or explain shipping options. The person reviews the result and submits payment. This can save time while retaining a clear human approval step. A retailer should label which actions were automated and show the exact items, price, taxes, delivery terms and seller before approval.
Transaction execution: the agent places the order
Here, the shopper has delegated a defined action, such as buying a replacement under a spending limit or reordering a known item. The agent must prove its identity, present evidence of the user’s permission and stay within limits. A successful recommendation does not prove that this execution path exists: merchant acceptance, payment authorization, fraud screening and a workable refund process are all separate dependencies.
How fast is adoption?
Salesforce reported that agentic search grew 200% year over year in a September 30, 2026 release. Its evidence combined several populations that should not be merged: a double-anonymous survey of 3,450 commerce professionals across 20 countries and 13 industries, conducted April 10 through June 4, 2026; analysis of shopping behavior from more than 1.5 billion global shoppers in 37 countries from the first quarter of 2024 through the first quarter of 2026; and a consumer survey of 4,689 people across eight countries conducted May 12–18, 2026.

Within the commerce-professional survey, 28% said their organizations used agentic AI and 52% planned adoption within six months. The latter is an intention, not confirmation that every deployment will launch or work at scale.
Visa’s “Where AI Meets Commerce” reported that 53% of surveyed business leaders were ready for AI-to-AI negotiation. That result came from 512 U.S. business decision-makers, alongside a survey of 2,000 U.S. general-population adults conducted January 29–February 6, 2026. It describes those respondents, not all businesses.
Consumer familiarity also varies by country. Visa’s 2025 U.S. Agentic Commerce Consumer Research Surveys reported 55% familiarity with AI assistants. In Australia, the same research reported 59% familiarity and 44% likelihood to use shopping agents. Australian respondents were motivated by price comparison, and more than half said they would abandon an agent if its data use were unclear. These are country-specific survey findings, not a global adoption rate.
What merchants need before an agent can buy
There is no universal technical checklist or winning platform, but a merchant can test the operational foundations that any delegated transaction needs.

- Automatic Scanning: NT-1228bc barcode scanner have three scanning modes: manual trigger mode, continuous scanning mode and auto-sensing scanning mode. In addition, there is a storage mode. Storage mode can be used when you are out of range of Bluetooth and wireless connectivity. Supports storage of up to 100,000 barcodes. Note: Before use, you need to scan the corresponding setting barcode on the manual.
- 2600mAh Battery Upgraded: Continuous scanning up to 200,000 times on a full charge. After a full charge the scanner can be used for one month at least, even in warehouses and at pos checkout counters where scanners are frequently used. In libraries and hospitals it can be used even longer.
- Programmable Configuration: Add custom prefixes/ suffixes, delete characters, Add keyboard keys/ combinations (terminator TAB, CR&LF, Home etc.), Enable or disable the barcode type as you want. Buzzer can be set to mute to allow for a quiet operation.(Note: It does not work with square POS / Divalto / DoorDash / Lightspeed POS system)
- Make the catalog machine-readable. Keep price, stock status, variants, compatibility, delivery promises, seller identity and product attributes synchronized. An agent cannot make a sound decision from stale or ambiguous fields.
- Expose the transaction boundary. Specify whether an integration can only search, can build a cart, or can submit an order. Show the transition from recommendation to purchase clearly.
- Capture explicit permission. Record what the shopper authorized, the spending ceiling, applicable product or merchant restrictions and how long the permission lasts. A general request such as “find me a good option” should not silently become unlimited purchasing authority.
- Authenticate the delegated agent. The merchant needs a way to distinguish an authorized agent from a stolen credential, scripted abuse or an impersonator while preserving a human’s ability to intervene.
- Design for recovery. Provide order confirmation, cancellation windows, returns, refunds, chargeback handling and a human support route. Reversibility is part of trust, not a post-sale detail.
- Measure false positives as well as fraud. A control that blocks legitimate delegated purchases can be as damaging as one that misses abuse. Monitor declines, manual reviews, account lockouts and dispute outcomes by transaction type.
Retailers should also state whether the agent or the merchant owns the continuing customer relationship. That distinction affects consent, support, loyalty benefits and responsibility when an automated decision is wrong.
How will AI shopping agents pay?
Payment readiness is an identity-and-authority problem as much as a card-entry problem. Visa’s 2026 account with Artemis describes standards developing across communication, identity, authorization and settlement. It names card-side efforts including Trusted Agent Protocol, Agent Payments Protocol and Visa Intelligent Commerce, as well as machine-native approaches such as x402 and MPP.
Visa’s analysis suggests that card rails may fit proxy purchases or larger transactions, while stablecoins may fit machine-native micropayments. That is an analysis from a payment network, not a settled industry consensus. Reach, currency support, consumer protections, volatility, settlement speed and merchant economics can produce different answers for different flows.

Visa/CyberSource’s 2026 merchant research illustrates the gap between interest and deployment: 19% of surveyed payment professionals said their organizations were currently set up to accept agentic-AI payments, while 63% said they were planning or implementing them. The 63% consisted of 32% in early implementation and 31% in planning or exploration. Readiness differed by merchant size.

The same report said 40–45% of surveyed merchants currently used each of three forms of payment tokenization. The exact token type and respondent base must be checked in the report’s figure before drawing a narrower conclusion. Tokenization can reduce exposure of payment credentials, but it does not remove fraud, authorization errors or disputes.
Payment options merchants should compare
| Question | Why it matters for agentic transactions |
|---|---|
| Merchant and geographic reach | An approach must work where the merchant sells, in the customer’s currency and under local rules. |
| Transaction value and frequency | A frequent low-value machine payment has different cost and settlement needs from a high-value proxy purchase. |
| Agent identity | The merchant needs evidence that the software is a legitimate delegate rather than an attacker. |
| User intent and limits | Authorization should show what the person approved, including amount, merchant, product class or time limit where relevant. |
| Authentication and liability | Define who bears losses when an agent is compromised, exceeds permission or makes a mistaken purchase. |
| Refunds and disputes | Customers need a practical route to cancel, return, obtain a refund or contest an unauthorized transaction. |
| Settlement and interoperability | Speed, currency conversion and compatibility with other participants can determine whether a method is usable beyond a pilot. |
What shopper-data use earns trust?
Personalization has to deliver a visible benefit rather than asking customers to accept opaque surveillance. The National Retail Federation and IBM’s January 7, 2026 study drew on IBM proprietary research involving 18,000 global consumers and a survey of retail and consumer-products leaders. It reported that one-third of surveyed consumers were trading down to budget-friendly alternatives, while weighing price, quality and trust in nuanced ways.
The same study reported that 52% of surveyed consumers were comfortable sharing their data, but 83% reported multiple overlapping concerns about privacy, misuse and unwanted marketing. Comfort with some sharing therefore cannot be presented as blanket permission. A shopper may accept an address being used for delivery while rejecting cross-context advertising or retention after an order is complete.

Visa’s 2025 consumer research found that confidence in AI assistants correlates with understanding. U.S. consumers valued transparent and reversible transactions, fraud protection, refund policies and recognizable payment providers. In Australia, unclear data use was associated with likely abandonment of an agent. Payment security and privacy are related but distinct promises: encrypting a payment does not explain how browsing history, preferences or purchase data will be reused.

Adobe’s 2025 retail report is described in a search-result summary as showing an 87% consumer expectation versus 46% brand execution measure for responsible and secure personal-data handling. The underlying PDF excerpt available for this topic did not expose the full question or methodology, so those figures should not be treated as a fully audited benchmark without checking the report’s chart and sample.
Questions shoppers should ask
- What information does the agent use: current cart data, past purchases, location, browsing behavior or inferred preferences?
- Is each data use necessary for this transaction, and how long is the information retained?
- Can I set a spending limit, restrict categories or require approval before an order is submitted?
- Will the merchant, the agent provider or another partner receive my data?
- Can I review the exact instruction and product details that led to the purchase?
- How do I cancel, return or dispute an order, and who answers when the agent is wrong?
Controls merchants should make visible
- Explain the value returned to the shopper, such as faster comparison, relevant replenishment reminders or a lower total cost.
- Separate required data from optional personalization and provide a meaningful refusal or deletion route.
- Display the agent’s permissions, the merchant’s role and any third-party data sharing at the point it matters.
- Keep a reviewable record of the instruction, decision, authorization and final order so support staff can reconstruct an error.
- Test whether privacy notices are understandable to ordinary customers, not merely complete from a legal perspective.
Mastercard summarizes the broader principle on its 2026 future-of-shopping page: “The future of commerce will not be shaped by AI alone. It will be shaped by trust, transparency and safeguards that allow people, businesses and financial institutions to participate with confidence.”
A practical framework for comparing agentic-commerce readiness
Use the following questions when evaluating a merchant, platform or payment integration. Ask for evidence appropriate to the claim instead of treating a product announcement as proof of routine use.
| Dimension | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Discovery | Is the agent only recommending, or can it build a cart and transact? |
| Product information | Are price, stock, delivery, variants and attributes current and machine-readable? |
| Permission | What did the shopper authorize, and can the agent remain within a spend limit or preference? |
| Identity and authentication | Can the merchant distinguish a legitimate delegated agent from abuse while retaining human control? |
| Payment reach | Which merchants, geographies, currencies and purchase sizes are supported? |
| Risk and recourse | How are fraud, false declines, refunds, chargebacks and disputes handled? |
| Data practices | What shopper data is used, for what purpose, and how can the shopper understand or limit it? |
| Evidence quality | Is the claim based on a consumer survey, merchant survey, platform activity, on-chain data, forecast or product announcement? |
Keep the evidence type attached to every number. A professional survey is not a platform-usage measurement; a platform measurement is not a forecast; and an on-chain total is not total ecommerce revenue. Visa’s on-chain analysis, for example, uses Artemis data through April 21, 2026 and excludes identified wash and test activity in its adjusted totals. That scope should remain attached to any figure drawn from it.
Where the biggest failures are likely
- Confusing recommendation with authorization: a system that finds a product may not be permitted to buy it.
- Stale catalog data: an agent can select an unavailable variant or promise a delivery date the merchant cannot meet.
- Ambiguous consent: broad personalization settings can be mistaken for permission to use data for unrelated marketing.
- Weak recourse: an automated order without a clear cancellation, refund or dispute path turns convenience into risk.
- Overblocking: fraud rules designed for human checkout can reject legitimate delegated payments and encourage customers to disable the feature.
- Protocol fragmentation: supporting one identity or payment approach may not provide interoperability with other agents, merchants or regions.
- Unrepresentative statistics: vendor-sponsored surveys and trade-association studies provide useful signals but do not describe every shopper or merchant.
The near-term opportunity is therefore selective automation: let agents handle comparison and clearly bounded repeat tasks while preserving visible approval, payment protections and human support for exceptions. Merchants that cannot explain those boundaries are not ready merely because they have added a chatbot.
