What eBay buyer protection covers
eBay’s Money Back Guarantee applies to most transactions, subject to eligibility rules and exclusions. Its central purpose is to provide a route to a refund or another resolution when a covered transaction goes wrong—not to act as a general warranty or an unconditional return policy. Buyers generally need to have checked out and paid on eBay using an eligible payment method, follow the case process, and act within the applicable time limits.

- The item never arrives: The buyer can report the order after its estimated or actual delivery or collection date has passed.
- The item is faulty or damaged: A buyer may seek a remedy if it arrives broken, damaged, or faulty and that condition was not clearly disclosed in the listing.
- The item does not match the listing: Examples include receiving the wrong item or an item materially different from what the listing described.
- The seller does not honor the listed return policy: If the seller’s listing offered a return and the seller fails to follow that policy, the buyer may have a claim under the guarantee.
These are grounds to request help, not a promise that every complaint will be accepted. eBay may review the listing, the buyer’s description of the problem, tracking, messages, and other evidence before deciding what applies. Depending on the circumstances, buyer and seller may agree to a replacement or a partial refund that lets the buyer keep the item instead of arranging a return.

It can. A damaged, broken, or faulty item may qualify when the condition was not clearly disclosed before purchase. The key distinction is between an undisclosed problem and a condition the listing accurately described. A buyer should explain the specific mismatch rather than rely only on a general statement that the item is unsatisfactory, and should keep relevant evidence such as photographs and the listing details.

For an eligible item-not-as-described return, the seller generally pays return shipping. The buyer should use the return process provided for the transaction and follow any return instructions and deadlines shown there. A returned item generally needs to be in the condition in which it was received; if it has been used, damaged, or returned with parts missing, the seller may be able to deduct a loss in value under the policy.
Some categories and transaction types have special rules. In particular, some final-sale purchases covered by Authenticity Guarantee may not qualify for a mismatch claim, while shipping damage or a seller’s failure to honor a stated return policy may still qualify. The category-specific policy controls, so the general rule for a damaged or mismatched item should not be assumed to override a special final-sale rule.
Can I return an eBay purchase if the seller says no returns?
Often, yes, if the issue is an eligible problem with the item. A listing’s “no returns” setting primarily addresses a buyer’s change of mind—for example, deciding not to keep an item or ordering the wrong thing. It does not normally defeat an otherwise eligible Money Back Guarantee claim that the item arrived damaged, faulty, wrong, or materially different from the listing.

For a change-of-mind return, the listing’s return policy governs whether the seller accepts the return and who pays the shipping. That is different from an eligible not-as-described return, for which the seller generally pays return shipping. Check the policy shown on the specific listing rather than assuming that every seller or every category uses the same return terms.
eBay says sellers generally have three business days to respond to a return request. If the seller does not resolve it, the buyer may ask eBay to step in. In some cases eBay may act or issue a refund without requiring the item to be returned. Follow the request page’s instructions; do not treat the general response period as permission to ignore a separate deadline or return instruction.
What happens if my eBay order never arrives?
Wait until the estimated or actual delivery or collection date has passed before reporting the item as not received. Under eBay’s U.S. policy details accessed in 2026, the buyer generally has 30 calendar days after that date to report the problem. Once the buyer reports it, the seller has up to three business days to respond with tracking information, delivery updates, or a refund. If it remains unresolved, the buyer can ask eBay to step in within the applicable window; eBay may also step in itself in certain circumstances.

- Open the order in your eBay account. Use the order’s delivery or collection information to confirm that the expected date has passed.
- Report the order as not received through the order’s help or request flow. Describe what happened and provide any relevant information requested by eBay.
- Allow the seller the response period. The policy gives the seller up to three business days to provide an update, tracking, or a refund.
- Ask eBay to step in if the issue is not resolved. Use the option and deadline displayed in the case. The general 30-calendar-day reporting period is measured from the estimated or actual delivery or collection date.
Delivery evidence can determine the outcome. eBay may look for evidence that the parcel reached the address recorded in the order details or that the buyer collected it. Sellers should ship to the order address and use tracking integrated with eBay. For local pickup, the policy recognizes the eBay app’s QR-code scan or six-digit pickup code as evidence of collection.
Authenticated shipments have additional proof requirements; these are not a universal signature rule for all eBay orders. For an Authenticity Guarantee shipment, eBay’s policy describes integrated tracking, a delivery scan at the authenticator, a matching date and address, and signature confirmation for orders totaling $750 or more. That $750 threshold is a policy condition recorded in eBay’s 2026 help material, not a general threshold that applies to every shipment.
What eBay seller protection covers
Seller protection is a set of conditional protections for specified situations, not a blanket shield against buyer claims, chargebacks, or financial loss. The applicable conditions can depend on the transaction, listing, seller’s status, shipping method, and type of claim. A “no returns” setting or proof that an item was shipped does not, by itself, establish that a seller qualifies.

eBay’s seller-protection information describes qualifying Money Back Guarantee cases and payment disputes, as well as situations involving eBay shipping labels and seller eligibility. For example, sellers who are not Below Standard may be eligible for specified protection on listings that offer free returns. The exact protection and its conditions depend on the case; sellers should check the live policy rather than assume every free-return listing or seller account receives the same outcome.
One described case concerns a seller who refunds a buyer and then has the item delivered after all: eBay says it reimburses the seller when the item was sent using an eBay label and the applicable conditions are met. The label requirement matters. This is not a general promise to reimburse any seller whose parcel arrives late after a refund.

To reduce uncertainty, sellers should keep the transaction evidence tied to the order: use the address in the order details, retain tracking and delivery records, and follow the return or dispute workflow. For pickup, preserve the recognized in-app collection evidence. These practices support a case, but they do not guarantee that eBay will decide in the seller’s favor.

The practical dividing line is not simply “buyer protection versus seller protection.” First identify whether the complaint is remorse, a listing mismatch, or non-delivery. Then check that the buyer used an eligible checkout and met the deadline, assess what evidence exists, identify who bears return shipping, and check whether a category rule or payment-provider claim changes the process.
Limits, exclusions, and mistakes to avoid
- Missing a deadline: A buyer or seller can jeopardize a case by failing to respond, report, return the item, or provide requested information on time. Use the specific dates displayed in the case as well as the general policy periods.
- Treating remorse like a defect: A buyer who simply changed their mind is subject to the seller’s return policy; an eligible damaged or not-as-described claim is a different route.
- Assuming every category follows the general rule: Authenticity Guarantee final-sale purchases can have special rules, including limits on some mismatch claims. Check the live rule for the item category.
- Returning an item in worse condition: A return generally must be in the condition received. Use, damage, or missing parts may affect the refund through a permitted deduction for lost value.
- Reselling an item found counterfeit: If eBay determines an item is counterfeit, the buyer may be required to cooperate with disposal and must not resell it.
- Opening overlapping claims: If the buyer files a chargeback or a protection claim with the payment provider, eBay may close the corresponding open eBay request. The buyer cannot then open another eBay item-not-received or return request for that transaction.
- Expecting compensation for unrelated losses: The guarantee is not a product warranty and does not cover losses caused by exchange-rate fluctuations imposed by the buyer’s bank, card issuer, or payment service provider.

The policy tied to the eBay site where checkout occurred can govern the transaction, so this explanation is focused on eBay’s U.S. help and policy material and should not be read as a worldwide rule. Terms and deadlines can change.
