Duck.ai is not a standalone model that keeps your conversation in one place. DuckDuckGo sends prompts to third-party model providers, says it removes personal metadata such as your IP address first, and has agreements intended to prevent provider training and commercial reuse. Your recent chats are normally stored on your device, while an optional Sync & Backup feature creates an encrypted server copy. Those protections have important boundaries: contextual data can accompany a prompt, providers list short-term caching and legal or safety exceptions, shared-chat links can be opened by anyone who receives them, and uploaded files go through a separate moderation process.
What happens when you send a Duck.ai prompt?
Duck.ai acts as a privacy layer around several external AI models. When you submit a message, DuckDuckGo says it removes metadata containing personal information before forwarding the request. The company specifically describes removing the user’s IP address and says no personally identifiable information is passed to model providers.

“Anonymized” does not mean that the provider receives only the words you typed. DuckDuckGo’s provider-sharing explanation says requests to Anthropic, OpenAI, and Mistral models hosted by together.ai can include several contextual fields:
- The current date.
- Your time zone.
- A preferred unit system inferred from your broad region.
- In some cases, a city-level location used privately to tailor an answer.
DuckDuckGo says it estimates regional context with a GEO::IP lookup without saving the original IP address or precise location. The practical distinction is important: the request is stripped of direct identifying metadata, but the model can still receive contextual information that helps it format dates, times, measurements, or location-sensitive answers.

What the model provider is allowed to do
DuckDuckGo says its agreements with providers prohibit using Duck.ai conversations to train their models and prohibit sharing the data with third parties for their own commercial purposes. The stated exception is subprocessors working for the provider. DuckDuckGo also says providers are expected to delete prompts and responses after generating a reply.
For models hosted by Tinfoil, DuckDuckGo describes a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE). The stated purpose is to prevent Tinfoil from seeing prompts and responses while they are processed. This does not eliminate every other processing path: uploaded files are sent to a separate moderation provider outside that TEE.
How long can prompts or replies remain available?
DuckDuckGo’s documentation uses more than one level of retention detail, so “deleted immediately” should not be read as an unconditional guarantee that no copy can exist for any period.

The provider help page focuses on a particular request path and its short-lived cache, while Duck.ai’s Privacy Policy and Terms describe a broader deletion window and exceptions. Treat the more specific statements as boundaries within the overall policy rather than combining them into a promise of zero retention. Provider lists and wording can change, so check the current Duck.ai documentation before sending highly sensitive material.
Where is your chat history stored?
Local history is the default
Recent conversations are saved locally on your device by default. DuckDuckGo says you can turn this behavior off in Duck.ai’s settings, delete individual conversations, or use the Fire Button to remove recent chats. Pinned chats are handled separately: you may need to unpin or delete them independently before they disappear.
On DuckDuckGo browsers, chats are stored locally outside ordinary browser web storage. In other browsers or apps, how long local data remains can also depend on that product’s storage and clearing settings. Clearing cookies alone therefore may not remove every local Duck.ai conversation.

How to reduce local exposure
- Open Duck.ai’s settings and disable local chat history if you do not want new conversations saved on the device.
- Delete individual chats that you no longer need, or activate the Fire Button for a broader recent-history cleanup.
- Review pinned conversations separately and unpin or delete them.
- If you used another browser or app, check that product’s site-data, storage, and profile-removal controls as well.
These controls affect the copy on your devices. They do not retroactively change a prompt that has already been sent for model processing or a conversation you deliberately shared.

Sync & Backup is optional. When enabled, DuckDuckGo says it stores conversations on its servers in end-to-end encrypted form. The master decryption key remains on your devices, so DuckDuckGo says it cannot decrypt and read the synchronized conversations.
This is a remote backup, not the same thing as ordinary local history. It gives you continuity across devices but creates an encrypted server-side copy that would not exist if you kept history only locally. DuckDuckGo’s policy says synchronized chats are automatically deleted after 18 months without access.

Choosing between local-only and synchronized history

What happens when you share a conversation?
Creating a share link is a separate action from keeping local history or enabling Sync & Backup. Duck.ai stores the shared chat in encrypted form and embeds the decryption key in the link itself. Anyone who receives the complete link can read the conversation.
Links expire after 48 hours by default. DuckDuckGo’s terms also describe selectable expirations of 1 day, 7 days, or 30 days, and say you can revoke a link before it expires. Because the key is in the URL, treat the link like a secret: do not put it in a public post, shared issue tracker, or analytics-enabled document if the conversation contains private information.

DuckDuckGo says it does not store prompts or information that could reveal chat contents for aggregate activity analysis, except when you explicitly share a conversation through feedback.
Its described workflow still processes a derived representation temporarily. The service computes an embedding of a prompt in memory, compares it with a representative prompt from an open-source chatbot-conversation dataset, and discards the embedding immediately after matching. DuckDuckGo says the matched open-source prompt can be retained long term. It also reports collecting anonymized aggregate statistics such as message counts, tokens used, and features used.
That means the policy distinction is between raw prompt content and short-lived or aggregate analysis: “not stored for analytics” does not mean that no derived computation occurs in memory.
How uploaded images and files are handled
Files and images follow a different path from text-only prompts. DuckDuckGo says uploads are checked anonymously for child sexual abuse material (CSAM) by a third-party moderation provider and, in some cases, by the model provider.
- The moderation provider is not given identifying information such as your IP address, except for information that may already be contained inside the uploaded file.
- Files are not retained when they pass moderation.
- If a file is flagged as CSAM, DuckDuckGo says it is retained and reported to relevant authorities.
- The same moderation process applies when you select a Tinfoil-hosted model; the upload is sent to the moderation provider outside the TEE channel.
Before uploading a document, inspect it for embedded metadata, visible account numbers, names, addresses, or other information that could identify you. Removing those details reduces accidental disclosure, but it does not bypass moderation or provider processing.
What Duck.ai protects—and what it does not

Practical rules for private use
- Do not paste secrets. Avoid passwords, authentication codes, private encryption keys, unreleased credentials, and information that would cause harm if briefly cached or exposed through an account or device.
- Check context before sending. A prompt may carry date, time-zone, regional-unit, or city-level context even after direct identifiers are removed.
- Decide whether you need history. Turn off local history for one-off sensitive work and clear existing chats, including pinned items.
- Enable Sync & Backup deliberately. Use it when cross-device recovery matters more than keeping conversations off DuckDuckGo’s servers.
- Handle share links as confidential files. Set the shortest useful expiration and revoke the link when the recipient no longer needs it.
- Sanitize uploads. Remove hidden metadata and unrelated personal pages before sending an image or document, and remember that moderation is separate from model processing.
- Recheck the policy. Provider names, retention terms, model availability, and settings can change.
Bottom line
Duck.ai’s privacy design reduces direct identity exposure and separates your device history from optional encrypted backup. It does not make prompts anonymous in the sense of carrying no context, nor does it promise that every processing path ends instantly with no exceptions. The clearest mental model is: anonymized request routing, contract-based limits on provider use, local history by default, encrypted backup only when you opt in, and a separate moderation pipeline for files.
