TSMC’s financial cycle is driven by the interaction of demand for advanced chips, the mix of process nodes it manufactures, how fully its fabs are loaded, and the cost of adding new capacity. In 2025, the company reported NT$3,809.05 billion in revenue, up 31.6% from the prior year, or US$122.42 billion, up 35.9% in U.S.-dollar terms. Its gross margin was 59.9%, operating margin 50.8%, and net margin 45.1%. Those growth rates are not interchangeable: the New Taiwan dollar and U.S. dollar figures use different currency bases.
The same operating model explains why strong demand can coexist with temporary margin pressure. New technologies such as 2nm and new overseas fabs require heavy investment and initially carry higher costs. Utilization, productivity gains, foreign exchange, and the timing of those ramps determine how much of the revenue growth reaches profit.

How TSMC’s business model turns chip demand into revenue
TSMC is a contract semiconductor manufacturer: customers design chips, while TSMC manufactures them on specified process technologies and packages or tests them through related capabilities. Revenue therefore depends on more than the number of chips shipped. The economically important variables are wafer volume, the price and complexity of each process, the mix of nodes used by customers, and factory utilization.

Process technology mix matters
More advanced nodes generally involve greater research, equipment, and manufacturing complexity. When a larger share of wafers uses leading-edge processes, the revenue mix can improve, but the cost profile also changes as a node ramps. The latest reported quarter illustrates the concentration: in Q2 2026, 2nm represented 3% of wafer revenue, 3nm 30%, 5nm 33%, and 7nm 11%. Together, 7nm and more advanced technologies accounted for 77% of wafer revenue.
This is a process-node view, not a customer or end-market breakdown. A smartphone, AI accelerator, automotive processor, or networking chip may use different nodes, and a single customer can use several nodes at once.
2nm marks a new production phase
TSMC’s annual report said 2nm entered high-volume manufacturing in Q4 2025. High-volume manufacturing means the process has moved beyond development and pilot production into meaningful commercial output; it does not mean the node immediately has the same utilization or cost structure as an established process.

Why reported revenue growth differs in New Taiwan dollars and U.S. dollars
TSMC reports in New Taiwan dollars and also presents U.S.-dollar figures. In 2025, NT$3,809.05 billion represented 31.6% year-over-year growth, while US$122.42 billion represented 35.9% growth. The difference reflects the exchange-rate conversion used for each period, not two separate sets of shipments.
For comparisons, keep the currency basis constant:
| Measure | 2025 reported figure | Growth or margin |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue in New Taiwan dollars | NT$3,809.05 billion | 31.6% year over year |
| Revenue in U.S. dollars | US$122.42 billion | 35.9% year over year |
| Gross margin | 59.9% | Full-year 2025 |
| Operating margin | 50.8% | Full-year 2025 |
| Net margin | 45.1% | Full-year 2025 |
A stronger or weaker exchange rate can change the apparent U.S.-dollar growth rate and can also affect margins when costs and revenue are denominated in different currencies. The company’s chief financial officer has identified exchange rates as a factor TSMC does not control.

How utilization, productivity, and node ramps move margins
Gross margin is the share of revenue left after manufacturing costs. TSMC’s operating margin additionally subtracts operating expenses, while net margin includes financing, taxes, and other below-operating-line items. The full-year 2025 figures provide the broad benchmark; quarterly results show how the manufacturing cycle is moving.
Q2 2026: a utilization and cost-improvement benefit
In Q2 2026, TSMC reported a gross margin of 67.7%, 150 basis points higher than the preceding quarter. Management attributed the sequential improvement primarily to cost improvements and slightly higher utilization. Overseas-fab dilution partially offset those gains.
Utilization spreads fixed manufacturing costs across more wafers. When demand fills a fab, depreciation, engineering, and other factory costs are absorbed by greater output, supporting gross margin. When utilization falls, the same fixed-cost base is allocated across fewer wafers, creating pressure even if pricing does not change.
Cost improvement and productivity can include better yields, more efficient equipment use, process learning, and higher output from the same installed base. These gains can counteract some of the expense of introducing a new node, but their timing is not uniform across factories or technologies.
Why a successful technology ramp can lower near-term margin
Management expected the 2nm ramp to dilute second-half 2026 gross margin by about 3–4 percentage points. Early production usually carries start-up costs, lower yields than mature production, and underutilized equipment. The estimate is management guidance for that period, not a reported historical result.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Overseas-fab ramps create a similar trade-off. Management forecast gross-margin dilution of 2–3 percentage points in the early stages of overseas-fab expansion, widening to 3–4 points at later stages. It cited strong leading-edge demand, productivity gains, and optimization of capacity across nodes as potential offsets.
These effects can occur simultaneously. Higher utilization in established fabs may lift margins while 2nm or overseas facilities weigh on them. Looking only at the most advanced node, or only at total wafer volume, misses that margin bridge.
What drives TSMC’s capital-spending cycle
Capital spending pays for the equipment and facilities needed to manufacture future wafers. It also supports advanced packaging, testing, mask making, and specialty processes. Spending rises when management sees enough structural demand to justify adding capacity ahead of customer requirements, but the accounting and operating benefits arrive over time.
2026 budget and allocation
TSMC raised its 2026 capital budget to US$60–64 billion. Management said the increase reflected continued structural demand, including the emerging agentic-AI market. Its approximate allocation was:
| Category | Approximate share of 2026 budget | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Advanced process technologies | 70–80% | Leading-edge wafer-fabrication capacity and related equipment |
| Specialty technologies | About 10% | Established and application-specific process platforms |
| Advanced packaging, testing, mask making, and other items | 10–20% | Back-end capacity and supporting manufacturing infrastructure |
The ranges are approximate management allocations, not audited spending totals for each category. They show where the incremental capacity is intended to go, rather than how much revenue each category will produce.

2025 spending versus the 2026 budget
Management reported 2025 capital expenditures of US$40.9 billion. That is a prior-year amount; the US$60–64 billion figure is a 2026 budget range. Comparing them helps show the scale of the planned investment increase, but a budget is not the same as cash actually spent or as a guarantee of future revenue.
Why management links capex to later growth
In the Q2 2026 earnings call, management said: “At TSMC, a higher level of capital expenditures is always correlated to higher growth opportunities in following years.” This is management’s investment rationale, not an independently proven rule or a promise that every dollar of capex will earn a particular return. Capacity must be brought online, qualified, filled by customer demand, and operated at improving yields before it can deliver its intended economics.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The investment cycle: from demand signal to margin recovery
- Demand becomes visible. Customers provide forecasts, product road maps, and process requirements. Advanced computing and other applications can create a case for additional leading-edge capacity, while automotive and IoT programs may require different longevity and specialty-process characteristics.
- TSMC commits capital. The company orders clean-room infrastructure, fabrication tools, packaging equipment, and related assets. The 2026 budget’s allocation shows that spending is not limited to wafer-fab nodes.
- Capacity ramps. New equipment is installed, processes are qualified, and output increases. During this phase, depreciation and start-up expenses can arrive before utilization and yields reach mature levels.
- Utilization and productivity improve. As customer volume rises and engineers learn the process, fixed costs are spread over more wafers and yields improve. These are the mechanisms that can restore or expand gross margin after an initial ramp dilution.
- TSMC starts the next investment decision. If demand remains structural, management may add capacity for the next node or for packaging and specialty technologies, restarting the cycle.
The cycle is why revenue growth, margin expansion, and capital spending do not peak at the same time. Spending can rise before the associated revenue appears; margins can dip during a successful launch; and mature capacity can generate strong cash returns while the newest fabs are still being qualified.
How to read the latest outlook without confusing guidance with results
On July 16, 2026, alongside its Q2 results, TSMC guided Q3 revenue to US$44.6–45.8 billion, gross margin to 65–67%, and operating margin to 56–58%. The guidance used an assumed exchange rate of NT$32 per U.S. dollar. These are company forecasts issued on that date, not Q3 actual results.

The guided gross-margin range sits below Q2’s reported 67.7%, consistent with management’s explanation that new-node and overseas-fab ramps can create near-term dilution. The comparison is useful only if the periods are kept separate: Q2 is an actual quarter, while Q3 is a forecast.

A practical framework for analyzing TSMC’s next results
Use the following sequence to connect the reported numbers to the operating drivers:
- Start with the period. Separate full-year 2025 results, Q2 2026 actuals, and Q3 2026 guidance.
- Fix the currency. Compare NT-dollar figures with NT-dollar figures and U.S.-dollar figures with U.S.-dollar figures. Note the exchange-rate assumption when reading guidance.
- Check node mix. Track the share of wafer revenue from 7nm and more advanced technologies, then inspect the individual 2nm, 3nm, 5nm, and 7nm contributions.
- Separate end markets from nodes. Smartphone, HPC, automotive, and IoT describe applications; node percentages describe manufacturing technology. They answer different questions.
- Build the margin bridge. Look for utilization, cost and productivity improvements, foreign-exchange effects, and the timing of 2nm or overseas-fab ramps.
- Read capex as future capacity. Distinguish the budget from actual spending and ask which portion is going to advanced processes, specialty technologies, or packaging and testing.
- Test the offset. Management may expect strong leading-edge demand or productivity to offset ramp costs. Treat that as an outlook assumption and compare it with subsequent reported utilization and margins.
What the numbers do—and do not—prove
The reported figures establish that TSMC entered 2026 with a high share of wafer revenue from advanced technologies, strong full-year 2025 profitability, and a substantially larger planned capital budget. They do not by themselves prove the market share of any end market, the profitability of a particular customer, or the return that will be earned on the 2026 investment.
They also do not imply that every advanced node has the same economics. A mature 7nm line, a newly ramping 2nm line, and an overseas facility can have different yields, depreciation burdens, labor costs, and utilization rates. TSMC’s consolidated margin is the result of those pieces interacting in the same quarter.

TSMC’s revenue is pulled by customer demand and process-node mix; its margins are shaped by utilization, productivity, currency, and the cost of ramping new technologies and factories; and its capital spending is the forward-looking commitment that builds the capacity for the next revenue cycle. The most informative analysis keeps those drivers connected while preserving the distinctions between currencies, end markets, process nodes, actual results, and management guidance.
