The key questions in any quarter are therefore how much foundry capacity customers used, which end markets they serve, which process nodes they selected, and what price and cost conditions accompanied that production. High-performance computing (HPC) and smartphones dominate the mix, while advanced nodes account for most wafer revenue.
To read a result correctly, separate reported revenue from guidance, keep NT-dollar and US-dollar figures distinct, and examine revenue, margins, wafer shipments, exchange rates, platform mix and process mix together. No single percentage explains the quarter.

TSMC’s business model: revenue from customers’ designs
TSMC describes itself as a pure-play foundry. It manufactures semiconductors designed by customers rather than selling chips under its own brand. The company says that by not designing, manufacturing or marketing semiconductor products under its own name, it avoids competing with those customers.

That model changes how to interpret revenue. There is no TSMC-branded processor or phone chip whose unit sales can be tracked directly. Instead, customers submit designs, reserve manufacturing capacity, choose process technologies and pay for finished wafers and related services. Demand for datacenter processors, accelerators, smartphone application processors, networking silicon, vehicle electronics and other customer products flows through the foundry.
#1 Best Overall
In its 2025 report, TSMC said it manufactured 12,682 products for 534 customers using 305 distinct process technologies. Those products served high-performance computing, smartphones, the internet of things, automotive applications and digital consumer electronics. The breadth of that customer base means quarterly revenue reflects a portfolio of programs at different stages, not one product cycle.
The practical revenue equation
A useful working model is:
Foundry revenue = wafer volume × price per wafer, adjusted for technology mix, platform mix and currency.
Wafer volume depends on customer orders, factory capacity and utilization. Price varies with wafer size, process complexity, design requirements and the commercial terms of each program. Technology mix matters because leading-edge wafers generally carry different pricing and cost structures from mature-node wafers. The reported result is also affected by the NT-dollar/US-dollar exchange rate used for translation.

This is an analytical framework, not a formula TSMC publishes as a quarter-by-quarter bridge. Management commentary is still needed to determine why a metric moved.
Which end markets drive revenue?
TSMC reports revenue by platform. These categories describe the applications in which customers use the chips, and they are one of the most important ways to identify demand drivers.
| Platform | Share of 2025 net revenue | What it includes |
|---|---|---|
| High-performance computing (HPC) | 58% | Computing applications such as datacenter processors and accelerators |
| Smartphone | 29% | Chips used in mobile devices |
| Internet of things (IoT) | 5% | Connected devices and embedded applications |
| Automotive | 5% | Vehicle and mobility electronics |
| Digital consumer electronics | 1% | Consumer products outside the other named platforms |
| Other | 2% | Remaining applications |
HPC and smartphones together represented 87% of 2025 net revenue. That concentration makes their shipment cycles especially important: a change in datacenter accelerator demand or smartphone production can move the company-wide result even when smaller platforms are stable.
HPC is the largest reported platform
HPC includes datacenter processors, accelerators and other high-compute silicon. AI-related workloads are an important source of current demand, but HPC is broader than AI alone. When reading a quarter, look for management’s explanation of which HPC programs changed, whether customers are building inventory, and whether new products are ramping.
Smartphones remain a major seasonal source
Smartphone revenue typically varies with product launches and the industry’s inventory cycle. A quarter with strong smartphone production can look different from a datacenter-led quarter even if total wafer shipments are similar. Compare the smartphone percentage with the preceding quarter and the year-ago quarter rather than treating the annual 29% figure as a constant.
Smaller platforms still affect stability
IoT and automotive each contributed 5% in 2025, while digital consumer electronics contributed 1%. Their individual percentages are smaller, but they can provide diversification when one large platform slows. Automotive programs can also have long qualification and production cycles, so a single quarter may not reveal the full demand trend.
Platform mix changes by quarter
The annual mix is not a forecast for every quarter. In the fourth quarter of 2025, the reported mix was HPC 55%, smartphone 32%, IoT 4%, automotive 5%, digital consumer electronics 1% and other 3%. The difference from the full-year percentages illustrates why quarterly analysis must use the quarter’s own table.
Rank #3
Read platform mix as a set of shares that add to 100% within the platform table. Do not add platform percentages to process-node percentages: they are two views of the same wafer revenue, not separate pools of revenue.

Process-node mix describes how wafers were manufactured, not which application used them. TSMC’s 2025 wafer-revenue mix was 24% for 3nm, 36% for 5nm and 14% for 7nm. TSMC defines “advanced technologies” as 7nm and below; that group represented 74% of wafer revenue.
| Process category | 2025 share of wafer revenue | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 3nm | 24% | Track leading-edge product ramps and customer adoption |
| 5nm | 36% | Shows the scale of a major advanced-node generation |
| 7nm | 14% | Indicates continuing demand for an established advanced node |
| 7nm and below (advanced technologies) | 74% | TSMC’s combined advanced-node grouping; includes the categories above and other qualifying technologies |
Node percentages are not an additional revenue breakdown to sum with platform percentages. A smartphone processor and a datacenter accelerator can both use an advanced node. Compare changes within the process table, then compare them with the platform table to form a hypothesis about demand.
A rising advanced-node share signals that leading-edge production is a larger part of wafer revenue. It does not, by itself, prove that gross margin rose or fell. Pricing, startup costs, utilization, depreciation, yields, product mix and currency can offset one another, so use management’s explanation before assigning a margin cause.
Other factors that move a quarter
Wafer shipments and factory utilization
More 12-inch-equivalent wafer shipments generally indicate greater physical output, but shipments alone do not determine revenue. A quarter can have higher volume and lower revenue growth if the mix shifts toward lower-priced products or if currency translation changes. Conversely, a leading-edge mix can lift revenue without a proportional increase in wafer count.
Rank #4
Utilization matters because semiconductor factories have substantial fixed costs. Strong utilization spreads those costs across more wafers; weak utilization can pressure margins even when revenue remains substantial. TSMC’s releases provide shipment information and management commentary that help distinguish a volume issue from a mix or pricing issue.
Exchange rates
TSMC reports in both NT dollars and US dollars. The average NT-dollar/US-dollar rate affects the conversion of the same underlying business. In its first-quarter 2026 conference presentation, revenue rose 6.4% sequentially in US-dollar terms but 8.4% in NT-dollar terms. That difference is why a quarter should be compared in one currency at a time before drawing a growth conclusion.
Pricing, costs and capacity
Revenue reflects the prices agreed for wafers and related manufacturing, while gross margin reflects what remains after production costs. New-factory start-up expenses, depreciation, materials, energy, labor, yield learning and capacity utilization can all affect costs. Capital spending can increase future capacity while creating near-term depreciation and ramp costs. Look for management’s comments on these items rather than assuming that revenue growth automatically expands margins.
Customer inventory and timing
Customers may build inventory ahead of a product launch or reduce orders after an earlier build. A single quarter can therefore reflect timing rather than a permanent change in end-market demand. Compare sequential and year-over-year results and read the company’s explanation of inventory, launches and ramps.

- Identify the period and currency. Confirm whether every figure covers the quarter, year to date or full year, and whether it is in NT dollars or US dollars. TSMC’s monthly revenue disclosure is in millions of NT dollars and labels the 2026 monthly figures as unaudited.
- Mark actuals separately from forecasts. On the official quarterly-results page, reported results and the next quarter’s guidance appear in separate columns. At the October 13, 2026 information point, the latest reported quarter shown was second-quarter 2026, with US$40.20 billion in net revenue. The third-quarter results event was scheduled for October 15, 2026; any revenue or margin range shown before that event was guidance, not a reported result.
- Measure growth two ways. Calculate sequential growth against the immediately preceding quarter and year-over-year growth against the same quarter a year earlier. Sequential growth reveals current momentum and seasonality; year-over-year growth controls for recurring seasonal patterns.
- Read profitability beside revenue. Check gross margin and operating margin with the growth rates. Revenue growth with falling margins points to a different set of issues than revenue growth with expanding margins. Do not name the cause until management discusses mix, utilization, costs or currency.
- Check wafer shipments and the exchange rate. Use shipment volume to assess physical output and the average exchange rate to understand currency translation. Neither metric replaces the income statement or management commentary.
- Read the platform table. Identify which end markets gained or lost share. Compare the quarter with both the prior quarter and the year-ago quarter.
- Read the process table. Check 3nm, 5nm, 7nm and the combined advanced-technology share. Treat this as a separate dimension from platform mix.
- Review guidance and assumptions. Note the forecast revenue range, gross-margin range and operating-margin range, then record the date and assumptions behind them. Revisit the forecast only after the next actual release.
- Finish with management’s narrative. Use commentary to test whether the numbers reflect demand, product ramps, inventory, capacity, utilization, pricing, costs or currency. A ratio can show what changed; commentary helps explain why.
Worked example: interpreting first-quarter 2026
TSMC’s first-quarter 2026 conference presentation reported US$35.90 billion of revenue, a 66.2% gross margin, a 58.1% operating margin, 4.174 million 12-inch-equivalent wafer shipments and an average exchange rate of NT$31.59 per US dollar.
Best Value
The presentation also showed revenue up 6.4% sequentially in US dollars and 8.4% in NT dollars. The correct reading is not that one growth figure is wrong. The two rates use different currencies, and the exchange-rate movement explains why the translated growth rates differ. A reader should keep that currency distinction visible in any chart or spreadsheet.
The shipment figure supplies a volume reference, while the margin figures show profitability. To explain the combination, examine the platform and node tables and then read management’s comments on utilization, pricing, product ramps, costs and currency. The figures alone do not establish a single cause.
Annual context: what 2025 tells you
TSMC reported consolidated 2025 revenue of NT$3,809.05 billion, up 31.6% from 2024. In US-dollar terms, consolidated revenue was US$122.42 billion, up 35.9% from 2024. The different growth rates again reflect currency conversion.
Annual 12-inch-equivalent wafer shipments rose to 15.0 million in 2025 from 12.9 million in 2024. Pair that increase with the 2025 platform and process mixes: HPC was 58% of net revenue, smartphones 29%, and 7nm-and-below technologies 74% of wafer revenue. Together, the figures show a business with strong volume and a substantial advanced-node base, but they do not isolate the contribution of any individual customer or product.
TSMC’s annual report described robust AI-related demand entering 2026 while also noting continuing macroeconomic uncertainty. That statement is management outlook, not a guarantee. Use it as context for guidance and subsequent results, not as a substitute for reported revenue.
Common mistakes when interpreting TSMC results
- Calling TSMC a chip brand. It is a contract manufacturer for customer-designed products, so analyze customer demand and manufacturing mix.
- Combining platform and node percentages. They describe different dimensions of the same revenue and must not be added.
- Mixing currencies in one growth comparison. Choose NT dollars or US dollars and identify the exchange-rate effect.
- Treating guidance as actual revenue. Forecast ranges remain estimates until the relevant quarter is reported.
- Using unaudited monthly sales as final quarterly results. Monthly disclosures are useful timing indicators but carry a different status from audited or formally reported quarterly figures.
- Assuming advanced nodes guarantee higher margins. Node mix interacts with pricing, yields, depreciation, utilization, start-up costs and currency.
- Explaining a result from one metric. Revenue, shipments, margins, mix and management commentary need to be read together.
- Comparing unmatched periods. A quarter, year-to-date period and full year answer different questions; label the period before calculating growth.
A repeatable quarterly checklist
For each release, record the following in the same order:
- Reporting period and whether figures are actual, unaudited monthly data or guidance.
- Revenue in one currency, plus sequential and year-over-year changes.
- Gross margin and operating margin, with management’s stated drivers.
- 12-inch-equivalent wafer shipments and the average exchange rate.
- Platform shares for HPC, smartphones, IoT, automotive, digital consumer electronics and other.
- Process shares for 3nm, 5nm, 7nm and 7nm-and-below advanced technologies.
- Comments on utilization, capacity, pricing, costs, inventory, product ramps and capital spending.
- Guidance ranges and the assumptions or date attached to them.
- The next release date, so guidance can later be compared with the actual result.
Keeping this template unchanged makes quarter-to-quarter comparisons less vulnerable to headline bias. It also prevents a strong revenue number from hiding margin pressure, or a currency move from being mistaken for a change in underlying demand.
