What Drives the Price of Gold? Interest Rates, the Dollar and Geopolitical Risk

Gold prices move when buyers and sellers reassess its value relative to interest-bearing investments, currencies and perceived risks. Falling bond yields, a weaker US dollar or rising geopolitical uncertainty can support gold, but none guarantees a price increase: investment flows, central-bank demand and market positioning can reinforce or offset those forces.

How gold’s main price drivers fit together

Gold does not have a single price-setting cause. Its price reflects the balance of buying and selling, shaped by changing expectations about the economy, risk, the returns available elsewhere and the direction of recent market moves. A useful framework is the World Gold Council’s Gold Return Attribution Model (GRAM), which groups influences into four themes: economic expansion, risk and uncertainty, opportunity cost, and momentum.

For the questions investors most often ask, three channels stand out. Interest rates and the dollar affect gold’s opportunity cost: what an investor gives up by holding an asset that does not pay interest. Geopolitical risk can increase demand for an asset some investors perceive as a hedge. Investment flows and positioning can then magnify a move, sustain it, or turn it around. The channels overlap, so a price change over a particular week or month cannot always be attributed to one headline or indicator.

This distinction matters when interpreting market commentary. A relationship can be a useful tendency without being a rule, and an observed attribution over a period is not the same as a forecast of what gold will do next.

Why can gold rise when interest rates fall?

Gold pays no interest. When yields on bonds and other interest-bearing assets fall, the return investors forgo by holding gold may become less attractive. That can make gold comparatively more appealing and support demand. When yields rise, interest-bearing alternatives may look more attractive by comparison, creating a headwind for gold.

The relevant comparison is not as simple as “the central bank raised or cut its policy rate.” A policy rate is one rate, while investors also respond to bond yields, expected future rates and real yields. The World Gold Council identifies real yields, monetary-policy expectations and the dollar as factors that can influence investment flows. A policy-rate decision may affect expectations for those measures, but it does not dictate their direction or gold’s response.

Nominal rates, bond yields and real yields are different

A nominal rate is stated without adjusting for inflation; a real yield accounts for the purchasing-power effect of inflation. Gold’s opportunity cost depends on the alternatives investors actually consider, not solely on the headline policy rate. A shift in expected inflation, growth or financial stability can change how a rate move is interpreted. As a result, two rate decisions of the same size need not produce the same reaction in gold.

For example, falling yields can reduce the return available from bonds, which may be supportive for gold. But a rate decline can also accompany changing expectations about economic growth, inflation, or financial stability. Those circumstances can affect investor demand in different ways. It is therefore more useful to ask what markets expect yields and the dollar to do—and why—than to treat a policy announcement as a direct price signal.

A dated model sensitivity is not a forecast

In a framework dated 26 June 2026, the World Gold Council estimated that a 25-basis-point decrease in the US 10-year yield equated to a 1.75% increase in the gold price, all else equal. The estimate used quarterly data from Q1 2000 to Q1 2026. It is a conditional model sensitivity, not a prediction that gold will rise by that amount after any given yield decline.

  • ✔️Reverse: Portrait with an American bald eagle, a design by Jennie Norris in 2021.
  • ✔️Each Gold Eagle is a sovereign monetized bullion coin fully guaranteed by the U.S. Mint.

“All else equal” is important: the estimate isolates a relationship within a model, while real markets move as multiple inputs change together. If yields fall at the same time that other influences weigh on gold, the observed price move can differ from the model’s illustration. The same caution applies to any numerical sensitivity: it describes a modeled relationship under specified conditions, not a guaranteed outcome or price target.

Does a strong dollar make gold cheaper?

Gold and the US dollar often move in opposite directions. Because gold is priced in dollars in major markets, a weaker dollar can support dollar-priced gold, while a stronger dollar can be a headwind. But the relationship is not reliable in every period. Geopolitical risk, investment demand and momentum can complicate or outweigh it.

When assessing a dollar move, distinguish the currency’s direction from the reason it is moving. The dollar and yields can both respond to changing expectations about monetary policy or the economy. Those shifts can affect gold through more than one channel at once. A dollar decline does not, by itself, establish that gold must rise; nor does a stronger dollar prove that gold has to fall.

The useful question is whether currency effects are reinforcing the other forces in the market or pulling against them. If the dollar weakens while demand for gold also increases, the influences may point in the same direction. If investment flows or risk sentiment change the other way, the dollar relationship may be obscured in the price action.

Does gold always rise during a war or geopolitical crisis?

No. Geopolitical risk can support gold by increasing uncertainty and demand for an asset some investors regard as a hedge, but it does not guarantee an immediate rise. Other forces may offset the risk premium, and positioning can add volatility. The timing and scale of any response depend on how investors interpret the event and how it interacts with rates, the dollar and flows.

The World Gold Council’s account of the first half of 2026 described geopolitical risk and changing risk sentiment as important contributors to gold’s performance. That is an attribution for that period, not proof that every conflict produces the same response. A headline may be followed by a sharp move, a muted reaction or a reversal as investors reassess the situation and adjust positions.

The Council’s 2026 mid-year framework also estimated that a 100-point monthly increase in its geopolitical-risk measure equated to a 2.5% increase in gold’s price, all else equal. This sensitivity was based on quarterly data from Q1 2000 to Q1 2026 and dated 26 June 2026. It illustrates a modeled relationship under specified conditions; it is not a forecast for the effect of a particular war or news event.

What moves gold besides rates, the dollar and conflict?

Investment demand and fund flows

Investment demand can add to or subtract from buying pressure. The World Gold Council’s Q2 2026 outlook identified Asian investment, over-the-counter (OTC) activity and Western exchange-traded fund (ETF) flows as relevant parts of the demand picture. It noted that some investment flows are sensitive to real yields, monetary-policy expectations and the dollar. Those categories help explain why gold can move even when no single macroeconomic indicator changes sharply.

The Council expected investment demand to be the principal source of gold-demand growth through the remainder of 2026. That was an outlook as of 30 June 2026, not a general forecast for later years or a guarantee about what investors would do. Flows can change as expectations and market conditions change.

Central-bank buying

Official-sector demand also matters alongside investment flows. The World Gold Council reported that central banks added 863 tonnes of gold in 2025. That figure describes additions reported for that year; it should not be treated as a yearly rate that necessarily continues. In its Q2 2026 outlook, the Council expected central banks to remain significant buyers through the rest of 2026.

Central-bank purchases contribute to demand, but they do not determine the price on their own. Their influence sits alongside private investment activity, macroeconomic conditions and short-term trading. A demand figure is useful context, not a stand-alone explanation for a daily or monthly price move.

Momentum, positioning and profit-taking

Once gold begins moving, investor positioning can amplify or reverse the move. Trend-following activity can add demand when prices are rising; profit-taking can create selling pressure after a rally. The World Gold Council described momentum, positioning, trend-following and profit-taking as significant influences during the first half of 2026.

These effects help explain why a price can continue moving after the original news, or retreat even while a supportive longer-term factor remains in place. They also make short-term moves more volatile. Momentum is a market influence, not evidence that the underlying rate, currency or risk relationship has changed permanently.

How to read the forces behind a gold-price move

When trying to understand a particular move, separate the possible influences rather than searching for one definitive cause. The following checks reflect the factors the World Gold Council’s framework and outlook identify; they are a way to organize interpretation, not a trading signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Check the yield channel. Ask whether bond yields and real yields are rising or falling, and whether the change reflects shifting expectations about policy, inflation, growth or financial stability. Do not substitute a central-bank policy rate for the full yield picture.
  2. Check the dollar. Identify whether it is strengthening or weakening and whether that direction is consistent with, or opposed to, the move in gold.
  3. Assess risk sentiment. Consider whether geopolitical developments or broader uncertainty appear to be changing demand for gold, while remembering that the risk channel may be offset by other market forces.
  4. Look at demand and flows. Investment activity—including Asian investment, OTC activity and Western ETF flows—and official-sector purchases can contribute to buying or selling pressure.
  5. Account for positioning. Consider whether trend-following, momentum or profit-taking could be adding to the move or contributing to a reversal.

Then distinguish the kind of claim being made. A statement about what contributed to gold’s first-half 2026 performance is a retrospective attribution. A statement about what central banks or investors were expected to do during the rest of 2026 is a dated outlook. A percentage response linked to a yield or risk measure is a conditional model sensitivity. None of these, on its own, establishes what gold will do in a future period.

Why the forces can point in different directions

The World Gold Council’s mid-year 2026 account characterized opportunity cost as mixed while markets repriced expected yields and the dollar. At the same time, it identified geopolitical risk, changing risk sentiment and positioning as important influences. This is a useful example of why a simple “rates down, gold up” explanation can fail: several drivers can be active at once, and their effects need not reinforce each other.

Think of the drivers as competing inputs rather than switches. Lower yields may improve gold’s relative appeal; a stronger dollar may weigh on dollar-priced gold; geopolitical uncertainty may encourage demand; and profit-taking may create near-term selling. The resulting price reflects the balance of those pressures and changing expectations. That framework is more reliable than treating any one headline as a complete explanation.

What the 2026 outlook can—and cannot—tell you

As of 30 June 2026, the World Gold Council expected investment demand to be the principal source of gold-demand growth through the remainder of that year, with central banks continuing as significant buyers. It also highlighted Asian investment, OTC activity and Western ETF flows. These are date-specific expectations, not timeless facts or a forecast for subsequent years.

The Council’s mid-year assessment said gold faced a second half shaped by uncertainty around geopolitics, rates and investor sentiment. This is consistent with a market in which several factors interact, but it does not establish a direction or price target. For a current explanation of a later move, use the dated outlook as context and evaluate the prevailing yields, dollar, risk sentiment and flows for the period in question.
