Nike’s revenue, gross margin and inventory move with product demand and mix, geography, sales channels, pricing and discounts, operating costs, currency, and inventory decisions. In fiscal 2026, revenue was nearly flat in reported dollars but fell 2% on a currency-neutral basis; wholesale growth partly offset weakness in Nike Direct. The latest quarter, Q1 fiscal 2027, showed lower revenue and a modestly higher gross margin, while inventory rose from its May year-end balance. These measures tell different parts of the story—and each needs its period and basis attached.
How to read Nike’s latest results
Nike’s fiscal year ends May 31. Its fiscal 2026 annual results cover the year ended May 31, 2026; Q1 fiscal 2027 covers the three months ended August 31, 2026. Do not treat the quarterly inventory balance as an annual sales figure, or compare a quarter’s margin with the full-year rate without accounting for unusual items.

Nike reports both standard results and currency-neutral changes. Currency-neutral change adjusts for foreign-exchange effects and is a non-GAAP measure, not a GAAP revenue line. It helps distinguish underlying changes from currency translation, but the reported-dollar result remains important. Nike’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K and Q1 fiscal 2027 Form 10-Q provide the company’s financial disclosures.

What drives Nike’s revenue?
Revenue reflects how many products Nike sells and the average price it receives, shaped by category, geography, channel, product and channel mix, discounts, and currency. Nike identifies sport popularity, design trends, consumer preferences, seasonality, macroeconomic conditions, and operating or logistics factors as influences on demand and product mix. Those factors describe possible mechanisms; they do not establish that a particular product or campaign caused a period’s result.

Product categories: footwear is largest, but not the only driver
In fiscal 2026, NIKE Brand revenue included $29.5 billion from footwear, $13.4 billion from apparel and $2.2 billion from equipment. Footwear was about 65% of NIKE Brand revenue. On a currency-neutral basis, footwear declined 2%, apparel grew 2%, and equipment declined 2%.
Footwear revenue was flat in reported dollars, with unit sales down 1%; a lower average selling price reduced revenue by about one percentage point. Nike cited channel mix as the main reason for lower footwear average selling price, partly offset by product mix and strategic pricing. Apparel units grew 1%, and average selling price added about one percentage point, mainly from product mix, partly offset by discounts and channel mix.
Geography: regional weakness and offsets
NIKE Brand reports North America, EMEA, Greater China, and Asia Pacific & Latin America (APLA); Converse is reported separately. Nike attributed the company’s fiscal 2026 currency-neutral revenue decline chiefly to Greater China, Converse and EMEA, partly offset by North America. That explanation is specific to the year: it does not mean one market alone explains Nike’s results.

Channels: wholesale gains did not erase Direct declines
NIKE Brand wholesale revenue was $27.5 billion in fiscal 2026, up 4% currency-neutral. NIKE Direct revenue was $17.7 billion, down 8% currency-neutral; digital sales fell 12%, primarily because of reduced traffic, and store sales fell 4%. These opposite channel trends help explain why growth in wholesale did not translate into overall currency-neutral growth.
In Q1 fiscal 2027, NIKE Direct revenue was $4.1 billion versus $4.5 billion a year earlier. Wholesale was $6.8 billion in both periods in reported dollars, but declined currency-neutral, with Greater China weakness partly offset by North America.
Currency and the full-year revenue result
NIKE, Inc. reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $46.4 billion, compared with $46.3 billion in fiscal 2025: flat in reported dollars but down 2% currency-neutral. NIKE Brand revenue was $45.2 billion, up 1% reported and down 1% currency-neutral. Foreign-exchange translation and hedges can affect reported results; state which basis a comparison uses rather than treating the two measures as interchangeable.

What affects Nike’s gross margin?
Gross margin is the share of revenue remaining after cost of sales. Nike’s rate can change with selling prices and discounts, product and channel mix, product costs, warehousing and logistics costs, foreign exchange, and the performance of NIKE Brand and Converse.

NIKE, Inc. gross margin was 42.9% in fiscal 2026, up 20 basis points from 42.7%. Nike’s approximate explanation was that lower warehousing and logistics costs added about 20 basis points, favorable net currency changes including hedges added about 20 basis points, and lower other costs added about 20 basis points. Lower Converse margin and higher NIKE Brand product costs each reduced margin by about 20 basis points. These rounded components do not need to sum exactly to the reported net change.
Q4 fiscal 2026: tariff recovery makes the headline rate unusual
Q4 gross margin rose 890 basis points to 49.2%. Nike said an expected $986 million IEEPA tariff recovery contributed approximately 900 basis points. That one-time expected recovery is large enough to dominate the quarter’s reported increase; the 49.2% rate should not be read as an ordinary recurring margin level. Nike also described sell-through as challenged in its June 30, 2026 full-year results release.

Q1 fiscal 2027: lower logistics costs supported margin
Gross margin was 42.8%, up 60 basis points year over year, primarily because warehousing and logistics costs were lower. Revenue for the quarter was $11.2 billion, down 4% reported and 5% currency-neutral. A margin increase alongside declining revenue is possible: margin measures the share left after cost of sales, not the amount of revenue sold.
Actions that can affect the near-term trajectory
For Q1 fiscal 2027, Nike said it was reducing supply of selected footwear to rebalance the portfolio, repositioning NIKE Brand Digital as a full-price platform while reinvesting in wholesale, liquidating inventory through markdowns and partner returns or discounts, and investing in demand creation. Nike said these steps can weigh on revenue and profitability as they proceed. The measures may influence future channel mix, discounting and product availability, but the cited disclosures do not quantify their eventual effects.

What Nike’s inventory figures do—and do not—show
Inventory is a balance at a date, not a flow of sales over a period. At May 31, 2026, Nike had $7.5 billion of inventory, flat year over year: more units were offset by product-mix shifts. At August 31, inventory was $7.8 billion, 5% higher than at May 31, primarily because of product-mix shifts.
A higher balance alone does not establish stronger demand, excess stock, or a forecast of future sales. The disclosed explanation includes units and product mix, and Nike described supply reductions, markdowns and partner returns or discounts as ways it was managing inventory and making room for new product. The balance should be read alongside sales, category and channel trends, and the exact date—not as a stand-alone demand signal.
Which comparisons are most useful?
| Question | Useful comparison | What it helps separate |
|---|---|---|
| Is revenue changing? | Reported change and currency-neutral change | Dollar movement from currency effects |
| Where is channel performance diverging? | NIKE Direct versus wholesale; digital versus stores within Direct | Direct-platform weakness from wholesale trends |
| What is behind category revenue? | Footwear, apparel and equipment; units and average selling price | Sales volume from pricing and mix |
| Is margin movement likely to recur? | Full-year and quarterly rates, including identified unusual items | Underlying cost and mix shifts from exceptional benefits such as Q4’s expected tariff recovery |
| Why did inventory change? | Balance-sheet date, units and product mix | Inventory dollars from the composition of stock |
The company’s SEC filings and investor results releases are the primary sources for these figures. Nike CEO Elliott Hill said in the June 30, 2026 release that the company continued to face top-line headwinds while focusing on execution and profitability; CFO Matthew Friend said sell-through remained challenged. Those statements provide management’s framing, not an independent measure of demand.
