NAND flash prices are set by the balance between storage bits demanded by customers and bits manufacturers can supply. That balance is shaped by data-center expansion, premium device configurations, wafer output, technology migrations, inventory, and factory utilization—not by wafer capacity alone. SanDisk’s margin then reflects its realized revenue per gigabyte, exabytes sold, product mix, manufacturing costs, inventory charges, and sales incentives.
SanDisk’s fiscal 2026 results show why those distinctions matter: revenue and gross margin rose sharply as the company reported stronger sales and higher pricing, but the reported figures include mix and operating effects that make them different from a simple industry NAND-price quote.

What actually sets NAND flash prices?
NAND is a memory technology sold in products such as solid-state storage, embedded flash and enterprise drives. The market price for a given generation and configuration moves when buyers’ requirements for storage bits change faster or slower than suppliers can deliver them.

Demand determines how urgently buyers need bits
Data centers have become the largest NAND demand source in SanDisk’s October 2026 market-intelligence commentary. PCs and smartphones are described as “edge” markets that are shifting toward more premium models. Premium configurations can require more capacity or higher-value components even when unit shipments are flat.
SanDisk’s commentary estimates that data centers represented about 20% of flash bits in the early 2020s, 30% in 2025 and 50% at the time of the October 2026 commentary. These are SanDisk market-intelligence estimates, not an independently audited industry series.
Supply is measured in bits, not only wafers
Manufacturers can increase the number of usable bits produced from a wafer by moving to a denser NAND process node. SanDisk estimates that industry capacity was approximately 1.83 million wafers per month in 2022 and that about 560,000 wafers of monthly capacity were retired after the subsequent demand correction. It nevertheless describes mid-to-high-teens bit growth from the smaller manufacturing footprint because of node migrations.

As SanDisk’s Eric Cherrstrom, vice president of Market Intelligence, wrote on October 7, 2026: “The implication is important: additional flash supply can be generated through technology transitions at existing wafer-capacity levels.” A wafer-capacity cut can therefore coexist with rising bit output, which may restrain prices if demand does not absorb those additional bits.

| Measure | Figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Global flash unit shipments | 1.2 zettabytes projected for 2026 | SanDisk projection shared by Eric Cherrstrom; not a final observed tally |
| Average annual NAND revenue | Approximately $60 billion, with cycles roughly $20 billion above or below that level | SanDisk’s estimate of historical market economics |
| Historical total-revenue growth | About 4% on average during the period discussed | Historical characterization, not a forecast |
| Flash-market revenue | More than $300 billion projected for 2026; nearly $500 billion projected for 2027 | SanDisk management expectations |
| Selected U.S. hyperscale and neocloud capital spending | $842 billion projected for 2026; nearly $1.1 trillion for 2027 | Selected-company projections cited by SanDisk, revised upward for 15 consecutive quarters |
SanDisk argues that data-center demand, premium edge products and technology-driven bit growth could change the industry’s historical pattern of falling average selling prices and sharp commodity cycles. That is management’s interpretation, not proof that NAND cyclicality has ended.
How a NAND price change reaches SanDisk’s gross margin
SanDisk’s gross margin is gross profit divided by revenue. NAND pricing affects both sides of that calculation, but the pass-through is never one-for-one. Four operating bridges explain the difference.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Realized pricing per gigabyte
A higher realized selling price per gigabyte generally lifts revenue and gross profit when manufacturing costs and commercial terms do not increase as quickly. Realized pricing can differ from a market quotation because it reflects SanDisk’s products, customers, contracts, configurations and incentives.
2. Bits or exabytes sold
More exabytes shipped can increase revenue even if revenue per gigabyte is unchanged. Volume alone does not reveal profitability: a low-priced, high-volume configuration may contribute less gross profit than a premium product with fewer bits shipped.
3. Product and customer mix
Datacenter, Edge and Consumer products have different price points, cost structures and demand patterns. A shift toward higher-value datacenter or premium edge products can raise average revenue per gigabyte and alter gross margin without an equivalent change in total bits.

4. Factory utilization, inventory and selling programs
Factories spread fixed costs over the output they produce. When utilization falls, underutilization charges increase manufacturing cost per unit. When market prices decline, inventory may need to be written down, reducing gross profit. Sales incentives and marketing programs—including price protection—reduce gross revenue rather than appearing as a separate operating expense.

What SanDisk’s fiscal 2026 segment data shows
SanDisk’s fiscal-year comparisons illustrate why analysts should examine price, bits and mix together. The company reported the following changes for fiscal 2026 versus fiscal 2025:
| Segment | Revenue per gigabyte | Product volume | What the combination indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Datacenter | Up almost 150% | Up almost 120% on an exabyte basis | Both realized value and shipped bits increased substantially |
| Edge | Up almost 180% | Up by high-single digits | Revenue growth per gigabyte far exceeded volume growth |
| Consumer | Up by a low-fifties percentage | Down by mid-teens | Higher realized value more than offset lower bit volume in the company’s comparison |
These are SanDisk’s fiscal-year metrics, not a generic NAND quotation. They show why a segment can report higher revenue per gigabyte while its physical volume moves differently.
Why fiscal 2026 margins surged
SanDisk reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $20.248 billion and GAAP gross margin of 71.5%, compared with $7.355 billion and 30.1% in fiscal 2025. The company attributed the increase in gross profit primarily to higher sales and higher pricing.

Its fiscal 2025 filing identifies additional factors that can move gross profit independently of a headline NAND price: improved pricing, favorable product mix, lower manufacturing underutilization charges and the absence of a flash-inventory write-down recorded in the prior-year comparison.
Commercial deductions also changed. Sales incentives and marketing programs were 11% of gross revenues in fiscal 2026, versus 19% in both fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2024. Because these programs reduce gross revenue, a lower percentage can raise reported net revenue even when list prices have not changed by the same amount.
Why the latest quarter should not be treated as a normal margin
Fiscal Q4 2026 revenue was $8.965 billion and GAAP gross margin was 84.6%, compared with $1.901 billion and 26.2% in Q4 2025. The scale of that year-over-year change makes the quarter an unusually strong point in the cycle, not a demonstrated through-cycle margin.
With its Q4 results, SanDisk gave Q1 fiscal 2027 guidance of $10.3 billion to $10.8 billion in revenue and 83.0% to 84.9% GAAP gross margin. Guidance is a dated forecast; it is not a realized result and can change as demand, pricing, mix, costs and supply conditions change.

Traditional NAND cycles often feature capacity additions, inventory accumulation, price declines and production cuts. Node migrations complicate that pattern because suppliers can produce more bits from existing wafer starts. If demand grows quickly enough, those extra bits support shipments without depressing prices. If demand slows, the same productivity can intensify oversupply.

SanDisk’s commentary describes data-center investment as a potential structural demand change. It also quotes a broader economic implication: “A shift in demand also impacts the economics of NAND flash.” The statement is company commentary, so it should be treated as a thesis to monitor rather than as evidence that future prices must rise.
A practical framework for reading SanDisk’s next results
To determine whether a margin move reflects durable pricing or temporary factors, track the following items together:
- Revenue per gigabyte: indicates SanDisk’s realized value by segment, but does not represent an industry-wide spot price.
- Exabytes or bits shipped: separates demand-driven volume from price-driven revenue.
- Datacenter, Edge and Consumer mix: identifies whether higher-value products are becoming a larger share of sales.
- Gross margin and manufacturing utilization: shows how fixed factory costs are being absorbed.
- Inventory charges: reveals whether falling market values are reducing gross profit.
- Sales incentives and price protection: indicates how much listed pricing is being given back to customers or channels.
- Management commentary on contracts and supply: helps distinguish a temporary spot move from changes in negotiated customer pricing.
Reading only total revenue or only a quoted NAND price can therefore produce the wrong conclusion about profitability.
What could reverse the improvement?
SanDisk identifies several risks to its results: demand volatility, changes in average selling prices and pricing trends, competition, product and technology transitions, manufacturing or supply-chain disruptions, and reliance on strategic relationships including Kioxia.
A downturn could pressure margins through several channels at once. Lower prices reduce revenue per gigabyte; weaker demand lowers factory utilization; excess or obsolete inventory can trigger write-downs; and competitive conditions may require larger incentives or price protection. Conversely, stronger demand can improve utilization and mix, but it does not eliminate execution, supply-chain or technology-transition risk.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—show
SanDisk’s filings support a company-specific explanation of how pricing, volume, mix, utilization, inventory and incentives affected reported margins. Its market-intelligence commentary supplies management estimates for demand, capacity and capital spending.
Those materials do not establish a consistently defined, current industry-wide spot or contract NAND-price series. SanDisk’s revenue-per-gigabyte figures should therefore be used to analyze its own realized economics, not presented as a universal NAND benchmark.
Bottom line
NAND prices rise or fall when demand for storage bits changes relative to the supply of bits manufacturers can produce. SanDisk’s margin captures that market movement only after it is filtered through product mix, exabytes shipped, factory utilization, inventory valuation and commercial incentives. Fiscal 2026 demonstrates the effect of stronger sales and pricing, while the 84.6% fiscal Q4 gross margin shows why a single peak quarter should not be mistaken for a normalized long-term result.
