DRAM and NAND prices are set by the balance between bits buyers want and the capacity manufacturers can deliver. In 2026, artificial-intelligence and data-center deployments are pulling demand toward server DRAM and enterprise SSDs while packaging, testing, process and component constraints limit how quickly supply can respond. The result is not one universal “memory price”: contract, spot and retail prices can move differently by product and market. TrendForce’s 30 September 2026 forecast called for conventional DRAM contract prices to rise 10–15% quarter over quarter in 4Q26 and NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20%, while Micron’s fiscal 2026 results show how higher average selling prices, product mix, shipment growth and manufacturing costs flowed through to its revenue and margins.
There is no single DRAM or NAND price
“Memory prices” can refer to at least three different transactions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Contract prices: negotiated between suppliers and large customers, often for defined volumes and periods. TrendForce’s 4Q26 percentages are forecasts for this market, not quotations for a particular retail product.
- Spot prices: shorter-term transactions that can react faster to shortages, surplus inventory or urgent buying.
- Retail prices: what a consumer or small business pays for a finished RAM module, SSD or device. Retail pricing also includes packaging, distribution, taxes, product specifications and seller inventory.
A rise in a server-memory contract does not automatically mean that every desktop RAM kit or client SSD rises by the same percentage. Product generation, capacity, interface, customer segment, contract terms and inventory all matter.
| Price basis | Typical participants | What can make it diverge from other prices |
|---|---|---|
| Contract | Memory suppliers, cloud-service providers, server makers, device manufacturers | Negotiated terms, volume commitments, price bands and timing of renewals |
| Spot | Distributors and buyers needing short-term supply | Immediate shortages, excess stock and changing procurement urgency |
| Retail | Consumers and small organizations | Finished-goods inventory, channel margins, specifications, promotions and local demand |
That distinction is essential when interpreting both a market forecast and Micron’s reported results. A contract-price forecast is an indicator of industry conditions, not a guaranteed price for an individual SSD or memory kit.

Demand: AI changes which bits buyers value most
Server DRAM and data-center storage
AI training and inference systems use large amounts of high-performance memory and storage. Cloud-service providers (CSPs) and server original-equipment manufacturers are procuring more server DRAM as server CPU availability improves. TrendForce’s 2026 outlook also projects enterprise-SSD bit demand to grow by more than 80% year over year as CSPs build AI-inference infrastructure. The estimate is a TrendForce forecast, not a completed industry result. TrendForce connects that demand to inference deployment, real-time data retrieval and caching, and increasing use of QLC flash in vector databases. TrendForce’s 30 September 2026 outlook describes these drivers and its segment forecasts.
AI demand therefore changes the mix of memory being requested. A supplier may receive stronger orders for advanced server products while demand for lower-priced client products remains cautious. The industry can be tight in one category and comparatively well supplied in another at the same time.
PCs, smartphones and other client devices
Consumer and client demand is more sensitive to component costs. TrendForce reports that PC manufacturers can draw on finished-goods and channel inventories for client SSDs, so they are reducing new component procurement. Some PC brands are also cutting SSD capacities in mainstream models to control bill-of-material costs. Smartphone brands likewise rely on existing inventories for some eMMC and UFS requirements; rising costs and depleted low-cost inventory are weighing on smartphone production and mobile-DRAM bit demand.

Those conditions can restrain orders even while server demand is strong. A buyer may postpone procurement, reduce capacity in a product configuration or wait for inventory to clear. Consequently, “AI is increasing memory prices” is too broad: AI is especially supportive of server DRAM and enterprise SSD demand, while client segments can face weaker purchasing momentum.

Supply: capacity cannot be switched instantly
Process, packaging and testing limits
Memory manufacturers cannot freely convert every wafer, process step or package into any product on short notice. TrendForce says suppliers are prioritizing advanced-process DRAM capacity for high-performance server products. Packaging and testing capacity, component availability and front-end production flexibility also constrain how quickly supply can be aligned with demand. These bottlenecks can persist even when total industry wafer output appears to be rising.
On the NAND side, suppliers allocate wafer capacity according to profitability. TrendForce describes overall wafer availability as constrained and says most incremental enterprise-SSD supply was already committed. That leaves fewer unallocated bits for buyers trying to increase orders suddenly.
Allocation and product mix
Allocation decisions determine which products receive scarce capacity. A supplier can direct output toward a segment with stronger demand or better economics, reducing availability elsewhere. This is why a client product can see limited procurement while enterprise SSD buyers report tight supply. It also explains why a company’s segment revenue can rise even if shipments in another segment fall: capacity has been redirected.

Inventory is a buffer between a supplier and a new order. PC OEMs with finished client SSDs can delay component purchases. Smartphone companies with eMMC or UFS stock can do the same. TrendForce also says NAND-wafer buyers have become more cautious as historically high prices strain downstream retail channels.

Inventory drawdowns do not prove that industry supply has become abundant. They mean some buyers can meet near-term needs without placing fresh orders. The resulting pause can moderate the pace of price increases in a particular segment even while another segment remains undersupplied.
Price tolerance matters as well. Cloud operators building AI infrastructure may accept higher prices to secure enterprise SSDs or server memory when capacity is strategically important. A PC maker serving a price-sensitive consumer market may instead reduce SSD capacity or defer purchases. The same upstream cost environment therefore produces different procurement decisions.
What TrendForce forecast for 4Q26
On 30 September 2026, TrendForce projected the following changes in contract prices for the fourth quarter of 2026:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Category | TrendForce 4Q26 outlook | Why the segment behaves this way |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional DRAM | Up 10–15% quarter over quarter | Server demand and constrained supply; some long-term agreement prices can lag the market average |
| NAND Flash | Up 15–20% quarter over quarter | Constrained wafer availability and stronger demand in selected storage segments |
| Enterprise SSDs | Price growth expected to accelerate | AI-related CSP demand and limited uncommitted incremental supply |
| Client SSDs | Increases expected to be restrained | Finished-goods and channel inventories, limited procurement and reduced mainstream capacities |
| eMMC/UFS | Limited incremental procurement | Smartphone inventory reliance and pressure from higher costs |
These are projections, not final prices. They apply to TrendForce’s market outlook for 4Q26 and should not be used as a universal forecast for every memory device or retail listing. The same outlook says server DRAM remains undersupplied, but increases may arrive at different speeds because some suppliers’ long-term agreements use pricing mechanisms that lag the market average.

How those forces appeared in Micron’s fiscal 2026 results
Micron’s fiscal year ended 3 September 2026, so its results should not be treated as a calendar-year 2026 report. In its Form 10-K, Micron reported large year-over-year increases in both DRAM and NAND sales:
| Micron FY2026 measure | Reported change or level | Main factors identified by Micron |
|---|---|---|
| DRAM sales | Up 252% year over year | Average selling prices up approximately 180%; bit shipments up in the mid-20% range |
| NAND sales | Up 274% year over year | Average selling prices up approximately 200%; bit shipments up in the mid-20% range |
| Revenue | $133.188 billion | Contributions from pricing, shipments, product mix and execution across the business |
| Gross margin | 81%, versus 40% in FY2025 | Primarily higher average selling prices, favorable mix and manufacturing cost reductions |
Micron’s FY2026 Form 10-K reports these figures and the company’s explanations. The sales increases were not caused by prices alone. Bit shipments also grew in the mid-20% range, product mix changed, and manufacturing costs fell. A 180% or 200% ASP increase describes the average across Micron’s reported product sales; it is not the price change of every DRAM chip, NAND die or retail device.
Why mix and allocation matter to Micron
Micron says mobile-and-client revenue grew in FY2026 despite lower bit shipments because supply was redirected to other business units. That is a practical example of allocation: shipping fewer bits into one area does not necessarily reduce its revenue if the company prioritizes products or customers with stronger demand or economics. It also means that evaluating Micron through total bit shipments alone can miss the effect of product mix.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Micron’s gross-margin improvement from 40% to 81% reflects the combined effect of higher ASPs, favorable mix and manufacturing-cost reductions. When prices rise faster than unit costs, incremental revenue can contribute substantially to gross profit. If prices later fall, however, the same operating leverage can work in reverse; the FY2026 margin is a reported result, not a promise that future margins cannot decline.

How customer contracts moderate exposure
Micron describes strategic customer agreements as multi-year, take-or-pay contracts with binding commitments for specific volumes. It says pricing is fixed or periodically negotiated and that most agreements include minimum and maximum bands. These terms can give customers supply assurance and give Micron greater visibility into volumes and pricing than a purely spot-based business.
Contract coverage does not mean every Micron sale follows the same formula or that earnings are immune to a downturn. Some agreements may respond more slowly than spot prices, while others are negotiated periodically. During a rapid upswing, a contract with a price band can lag the market; during a downturn, committed volumes can provide a degree of stability but do not eliminate demand, cost or execution risks. Micron states that “Strategic customer agreements are structured as take-or-pay agreements, with binding commitments for specific volumes over the multi-year contract terms.” That is the company’s description of its agreements, not a guarantee of financial performance.
Why AI does not make every memory product more expensive
The answer depends on four questions:
- Which product? Server DRAM and enterprise SSDs are more directly exposed to AI infrastructure than client SSDs, mainstream PC memory or smartphone storage.
- Which buyer? A CSP expanding inference capacity may have a higher price tolerance than a PC OEM protecting a consumer price point.
- What inventory is available? Existing finished goods and channel stock can postpone new orders and temporarily cushion a segment.
- What capacity is committed? If incremental enterprise-SSD supply is already allocated, new demand can push contract prices higher even when another NAND category is moving slowly.
This segmentation is why market commentary should identify the product and transaction basis instead of referring vaguely to “RAM” or “storage.”
What a buyer should check before interpreting a price move
- Identify the form factor and use: desktop UDIMMs, laptop SO-DIMMs and server RDIMMs are different products and are not interchangeable.
- Separate component and finished-product prices: a DRAM-chip contract forecast does not specify the price of a complete consumer module, which also includes assembly, testing, distribution and retailer costs.
- Check the period: TrendForce’s numbers are quarter-over-quarter forecasts for 4Q26; Micron’s reported changes compare fiscal 2026 with its prior fiscal year.
- Look for inventory effects: a temporary retail discount or delayed OEM order can reflect channel stock rather than a change in long-term wafer supply.
- Read product-specific announcements carefully: enterprise SSD, client SSD, eMMC/UFS, mobile DRAM and server DRAM can have different supply-demand balances.
How to read future Micron updates
For a disciplined view of Micron, track ASPs, bit shipments, product mix and manufacturing costs together. Rising revenue with falling shipments can indicate stronger pricing or a shift toward higher-value products. Rising shipments with weaker ASPs can indicate a more competitive or oversupplied market. Gross margin shows how pricing and mix interact with manufacturing costs, while customer-contract commentary indicates how quickly market prices may flow into Micron’s realized prices.
Also keep the market forecast and company report in their proper time frames. TrendForce’s 4Q26 figures are an external projection issued 30 September 2026. Micron’s 252% DRAM-sales increase, 274% NAND-sales increase, $133.188 billion revenue and 81% gross margin are reported FY2026 results for the year ended 3 September 2026. Neither source establishes a forecast for Micron’s share price or an investment return.
Bottom line
DRAM and NAND prices rise when demand for particular bits outstrips the capacity available for those products, and AI infrastructure is intensifying that imbalance in server memory and enterprise SSDs. Capacity allocation, packaging and testing constraints, inventories, buyer price tolerance and contract structures determine how quickly prices move in each segment. TrendForce’s 4Q26 forecast points to 10–15% quarter-over-quarter conventional-DRAM contract-price growth and 15–20% NAND Flash growth, but client products may behave differently from enterprise products. Micron’s FY2026 results show the financial mechanism clearly: higher ASPs were the largest contributor to sharply higher DRAM and NAND sales, while shipment growth, mix and manufacturing-cost reductions also mattered.
