Bitcoin prices move when the balance between willing buyers, available coins and market risk changes. Besides Federal Reserve decisions, the main forces are investment flows and access, risk appetite and the dollar, regulation and adoption, miner and holder selling, leverage-driven liquidations, and confidence in Bitcoin’s network. These forces interact, so an ETF outflow or geopolitical headline is evidence of a coincident factor—not proof that it alone caused a price move.
Bitcoin has several price channels, not one substitute for Fed policy
Federal Reserve policy affects financial conditions, but “besides Fed policy” does not mean monetary conditions stop mattering. A stronger dollar, tighter credit, changing appetite for volatile assets and a new regulatory rule can all alter Bitcoin demand even when the policy rate is unchanged. Supply decisions by miners and long-term holders can then amplify or offset that demand.

The most useful way to read a move is to separate five questions: who is buying or selling, how much liquid supply is available, what the broader market is doing, whether leverage is forcing trades, and whether Bitcoin’s network remains useful and trusted. No single indicator reliably forecasts the next price.

1. Investor demand, access and sentiment
Fund flows can add or remove a large marginal buyer
Spot markets are no longer the only route for exposure. Exchange-traded products (ETPs), trusts and other institutional channels allow investors to buy or sell Bitcoin exposure through familiar brokerage accounts. In a filing for the second quarter of 2025, a Bitcoin trust linked its rebound to strong U.S. spot Bitcoin ETP inflows and described regulatory progress as supportive. In its filing for the second quarter of 2026, the same trust attributed pressure to ETF outflows and changing investor preferences. Those are dated issuer explanations, not controlled evidence that flows alone caused either quarter’s performance. See the June 30, 2026 Form 10-Q.

Flows matter because a relatively small change in net buying can meet a market with limited immediately offerable coins. Conversely, redemptions can create a persistent seller even if the underlying Bitcoin network has not changed. Check the direction and persistence of flows, not just a single day, and compare them with spot-market volume and price.
Regulation changes who can participate
Rules can change perceived legitimacy, custody requirements, reporting costs and which institutions are allowed to offer Bitcoin products. A favorable authorization may broaden access; an enforcement action or restriction may make participation more expensive or unavailable in a jurisdiction. The effect is usually indirect: regulation changes the potential pool of buyers and sellers, then sentiment determines whether they act.
Adoption and public perception influence willingness to hold
Bitcoin use, demographics and public attitudes can change demand over longer periods. A 2025 annual report lists worldwide growth in adoption and use, maintenance and development of the Bitcoin software protocol, consumer demographics and public tastes, fraudulent or illegitimate actors, perceived scarcity, and political, economic and regulatory conditions among factors that may affect market price. The issuer’s full discussion appears in its fiscal-year 2025 annual report.

2. Macro conditions beyond the policy rate
Risk appetite changes Bitcoin’s relative appeal
Bitcoin generally trades in the same broad decision set as other volatile assets. When investors reduce risk, they may sell profitable or liquid positions, including Bitcoin, even if its protocol is operating normally. When risk appetite returns, the same portfolio decisions can support buying. This is a market-positioning channel, not a claim that Bitcoin has a fixed correlation with stocks or other assets.
The dollar and financial conditions affect global buyers
Because Bitcoin is commonly quoted in U.S. dollars, a stronger dollar can make it more expensive in local-currency terms for some buyers and can coincide with reduced appetite for risk. Credit availability, funding costs and the willingness of dealers to provide liquidity also matter. These conditions can tighten or loosen without a new Fed announcement.
For the second quarter of 2026, a Bitcoin trust cited tighter financial conditions, U.S.-dollar strength, geopolitical uncertainty, ETF outflows and a more hawkish rate outlook when explaining pressure on the asset. That list describes one quarter; it is not a universal price formula. The filing is available in the quarterly report.

News about conflict or political instability can produce either buying or selling. Investors may seek liquid assets, or they may raise cash and cut exposure to volatile instruments. The Bank for International Settlements described Bitcoin’s behavior during geopolitical tensions in early March 2026 as puzzling: Bitcoin had declined beforehand but ended the period above its pre-conflict level. That observation argues against automatically labeling Bitcoin a safe haven. Read the BIS account in “Markets recalibrate amid shifting currents” (March 2026).

3. Programmed issuance and the supply available to sell
The block subsidy limits new issuance, but does not set a price
Bitcoin’s protocol schedule makes new supply more predictable than in a discretionary monetary system. The 2025 Bitwise Bitcoin ETF Trust filing records a 3.125 BTC reward per block. It says the reward is expected to halve after each 210,000 blocks, with the next halving expected around mid-2028. A halving reduces the flow of newly created coins; it does not guarantee a rally. Existing holders can sell, demand can weaken, and traders can price the event in advance. The schedule and qualifications are in the trust’s 2025 Form 10-K.
Miner economics can turn issuance into market supply
Miners receive block rewards and transaction fees, but they also pay for electricity, hardware and operations. When margins are inadequate, miners may sell more of their rewards to meet expenses. That can increase liquid supply even though the protocol’s issuance rate has not changed. A profitable mining environment may allow miners to retain more coins, reducing immediate selling pressure. The actual effect depends on miners’ reserves, financing and hedging, which are not visible from the block subsidy alone.
Large holders can move the liquid float
Holder behavior is another supply channel. Coins that have been inactive can enter the market when a large owner distributes or sells them; coins can leave exchange balances when holders choose custody or long-term storage. As of December 31, 2025, the largest 100 wallets held approximately 15% of circulating Bitcoin, according to the Bitwise filing. Wallet concentration must be interpreted carefully: the count does not establish that 100 known people or firms own those coins, because multiple wallets may belong to one owner or one owner may use many wallets. The filing’s concentration discussion is in the 2025 Form 10-K.
4. Leverage, liquidity and forced selling
Derivatives can magnify an ordinary move
Perpetual futures, options and margin positions let traders control more Bitcoin exposure than their cash collateral would otherwise permit. If price moves against a leveraged position, an exchange or broker can liquidate it. Those forced orders can push price through stop levels and trigger additional liquidations, turning a gradual decline into a rapid fall. The same mechanism works upward when short positions are forced to buy.

The BIS reported that Bitcoin fell about 50% from its 2025 highs and said liquidations of leveraged long crypto positions probably exacerbated the decline. “Probably” is important: the BIS assessment does not prove that liquidations initiated the fall. Its March 2026 analysis is available at the BIS website.
Fragmented venues make liquidity part of the story
Bitcoin price discovery spans many trading platforms. A trust’s benchmark provider evaluates platform oversight, market efficiency, volume, transparency and data integrity when identifying a principal market. Thin order books, stressed market makers or differences between venues can therefore widen spreads and make a given amount of buying or selling move the quoted price more than usual. A benchmark price is a reference constructed from selected markets; it is not proof that every venue traded at exactly that level.

Utility can support a long-term investment case
People may hold or use Bitcoin because they value censorship-resistant transfer, settlement without a traditional intermediary, or a scarce digital asset. Demand can be affected by whether transactions are practical, how quickly they settle and whether users trust the network’s security. These are fundamental channels, but they do not provide a dependable day-to-day price signal.
Recommended Free Tools
Fees and settlement friction can reduce use
High fees or slower confirmation can discourage smaller payments and other uses, potentially reducing transaction demand. The Bitwise filing reports average daily Bitcoin transaction fees ranging from $0.31 to $124.17 per transaction over January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2025. It reports a $0.65 average daily fee on December 31, 2025. These are historical disclosures, not a current fee quote or a forecast. See the filing’s fee discussion.

Security and incentives affect confidence
Attacks, software failures or weaker mining incentives could damage confidence and reduce willingness to hold Bitcoin. Conversely, continued network operation and development can support trust. A change in one security or fee metric should not be presented as a proven predictor of the market price; investors still decide whether the information changes expected future demand.
How to analyze a Bitcoin move without blaming one headline
- Check demand and access. Look for sustained ETP or ETF inflows and outflows, changes in institutional access, regulatory announcements and evidence of shifting investor preferences.
- Check the macro backdrop. Record the dollar’s direction, broad risk appetite, funding conditions and geopolitical news, even when the Fed has not changed its policy rate.
- Check potential sellers. Consider miner profitability, large-wallet transfers and whether previously inactive coins are entering liquid markets. A wallet transfer alone does not prove a sale.
- Check leverage. Look for liquidation activity, open-interest changes, funding conditions and order-book depth. Treat liquidation data as evidence of amplification unless there is stronger evidence about what started the move.
- Check the network and rules. Review material security incidents, software developments, fee conditions, settlement performance and regulatory changes that could alter future use.
- Label the evidence correctly. Separate a contemporaneous observation, an issuer’s explanation and a demonstrated causal finding. The available filings and BIS analysis more often support the first two categories than the third.
Why the same news can produce opposite price reactions
A regulatory approval may be positive in principle but followed by profit-taking if traders bought ahead of the announcement. A halving may reduce new issuance while a recession simultaneously reduces risk appetite. ETF inflows may support price during one quarter, while large-holder selling absorbs them in another. Geopolitical news may attract cash into Bitcoin for one group and prompt leveraged traders to liquidate for another.
Timing, positioning and liquidity determine which channel dominates. That is why a careful explanation describes several coincident forces and states the confidence level rather than assigning the entire move to a single headline.
What these drivers can—and cannot—tell you
- They can explain changing pressure: more accessible demand, fewer willing sellers, tighter liquidity or forced buying can help account for a move.
- They cannot provide a mechanical forecast: a halving, fee reading, ETF flow or wallet transfer does not determine the next price by itself.
- They require dates and attribution: the 15% wallet figure, fee range, 3.125 BTC reward and 50% drawdown are tied to the specific filings and BIS report cited above and can become stale.
- They should be combined: the strongest explanation usually connects flows, macro conditions, supply behavior and leverage rather than treating any one series as conclusive.
Bottom line
Beyond Federal Reserve policy, Bitcoin’s price is shaped by who has access and wants exposure, how much coin holders and miners are willing to sell, the dollar and global risk appetite, regulatory and adoption trends, market leverage, and confidence in the network’s utility and security. These forces overlap and can reinforce one another. Use them as a framework for investigating price moves—not as a promise that any single indicator will predict them.
