Water resistance on a Casio Vintage watch is a pressure rating from a controlled test, not permission to take the watch to the depth printed on its dial or caseback. The correct use depends on the exact marking—such as WATER RESIST, 5BAR, 10BAR or 20BAR—the model’s operation guide and the condition of its seals.
Casio’s classifications follow DIN 8310/ISO 22810. Because movement in water can create pressure well above the static pressure used in testing, a “50 m” or “100 m” indication should never be read as a guaranteed swimming depth.

Start with the marking on your own watch
Casio Vintage is a collection, not one water-resistance specification. Different references can have different cases, gaskets and ratings. Look at the caseback first, then the dial if the back is unclear. You may find one of these labels:

- No water-resistance indication: Casio’s guidance is to avoid exposing the watch to water.
- WATER RESIST: Basic protection against splashes and rain.
- WATER RESIST 5 BAR: A higher pressure rating intended for limited water activities described in Casio’s general guidance.
- WATER RESIST 10 BAR: A higher rating that adds swimming and snorkelling in Casio’s general table.
- WATER RESIST 20 BAR: The highest of these ordinary classifications, with free-diving without equipment listed in Casio’s general table.
A label on the watch is only the starting point. Casio’s model-specific manual takes priority over a general chart, particularly when it gives different activity examples or operating warnings.

Why a metre number is not a safe diving depth
Water-resistance metres are a pictorial way to express the pressure applied during a static laboratory test. They do not mean that the watch can be lowered to that depth and used normally. Casio explicitly explains that metre indications “are merely a pictorial representation of the test pressure.”
In real water, pressure is dynamic. Moving your arm, swimming with force, jumping into a pool or striking the surface can produce a pressure spike greater than the still-water pressure at the same depth. A watch that passed a static test can therefore be damaged by activity that never approaches the printed metre figure.
For the same reason, do not convert a marking into a personal depth limit. Treat the marking as an activity category and follow the instructions for that exact reference.

Casio’s general activity categories
The table below combines Casio’s Europe water-resistance guide with its handling-and-care FAQ. The documents use slightly different examples, so the table describes general guidance rather than a promise for every Vintage model.

Casio’s FAQ warns that ordinary WATER RESIST or WATER RESISTANT watches must not be used for scuba diving or other diving that requires an air tank. A 10BAR or 20BAR Vintage watch is therefore not a substitute for a dedicated dive watch.
What each label means in everyday use
No marking or basic WATER RESIST
With no water-resistance indication, keep the watch dry. For a watch marked only WATER RESIST, normal exposure such as rain or an accidental splash is the intended level of protection. Dry the case and band afterward, and avoid deliberately holding it under a tap.

Casio’s general material places 5 atmospheres above splash protection. One Casio table includes bathing, washing and showering, while the care FAQ describes swimming and water-related work at 5 atmospheres. Because those examples are not perfectly identical, use the exact model guide as the deciding document. If you cannot find the guide, the conservative choice is to limit use to incidental water and have an older watch inspected before swimming.

Casio’s general table adds swimming and snorkelling at 10 bar, and its FAQ mentions windsurfing. Water can still enter through worn gaskets, an improperly seated battery hatch or a crown that is not fully closed. A 10BAR marking does not remove those mechanical risks.
20BAR
Casio lists free-diving without equipment for 20 bar and uses “skin diving” in its FAQ. That is different from scuba diving with an air tank. Even within the 20BAR category, follow the model manual and consider the watch’s age and service history before using it in demanding water activities.

How to check your rating before getting the watch wet
- Remove the watch and dry it. Read the caseback when the watch is clean and dry so the marking is not obscured by water or dirt.
- Record the exact wording. Note whether it says WATER RESIST, 5BAR, 10BAR, 20BAR or gives no indication. A number printed on a product listing is not a substitute for the marking on your watch.
- Find the matching operation guide. Casio’s general charts explain the categories, but the reference-specific manual controls for that model.
- Inspect the condition. Consider the watch’s age, previous battery changes, visible damage and whether the caseback has been opened. Water resistance depends on seals, not just the printed label.
- Choose the least demanding activity that fits both documents. If the marking and manual appear to differ, follow the stricter instruction or ask an authorized Casio service center.
Water-use rules that apply to any Casio Vintage watch
- Do not press buttons or operate the crown while the watch is submerged or wet. Opening a control can provide a direct path for water.
- Avoid baths, heated pools and saunas. Heat can accelerate seal deterioration, while rapid temperature changes can affect the case and gaskets.
- Keep soaps and detergents away. Casio specifically cautions against exposure while using soaps and detergents; chemicals can degrade sealing materials.
- Rinse seawater off with plain water. Salt and dirt should be removed after ocean exposure, then the watch should be dried thoroughly.
- Protect leather bands from water. Water resistance of the case does not make a leather strap waterproof; moisture can stain, stiffen or weaken it.
- Close every control correctly before exposure. A crown or caseback that is not seated as intended can defeat the rating.
Why an older watch may no longer meet its original rating
Water resistance is not permanent. Casio says seals naturally wear with age, and that heat, cold, solvents and cosmetics can speed deterioration. The marking records the design and test classification; it does not certify that a decades-old watch still has the same sealing performance today.
Casio’s general recommendation is gasket replacement about every two or three years. This is a maintenance interval, not a guaranteed failure date or a statistic about how many watches leak. A watch that has never been serviced may need attention sooner, especially if it has been exposed to heat, chemicals or repeated battery changes.
Battery replacement and water-resistance checks
Battery work often requires opening the case, so Casio recommends trained service with a water-resistance inspection. An original retailer or authorized Casio service center has the special tools needed to reseat components and test the watch. Replacing a battery without checking the gasket can leave a watch running but no longer reliably sealed.

What to do if you see moisture
If condensation or visible moisture appears inside the crystal, stop using the watch. Casio advises taking it to an original retailer or authorized service center, particularly if fogging does not clear. Continuing to wear it can allow corrosion to spread from the movement to the display and contacts.
The A168 example does not define every Vintage watch
Casio’s US water-resistant watches page names the A168WG-9VT as an example of a water-resistant Casio Vintage model. That confirms that an A168 reference can carry a water-resistance classification, but it does not establish the rating for every A168 variant or for every Vintage watch. Check the marking on your own caseback and the manual for its exact reference.
How to compare two Casio Vintage watches for water use
If you are choosing between models, compare the details that determine real-world protection rather than comparing metre numbers alone:
- Exact marking: Record the caseback or dial designation for each watch.
- Permitted activity: Use Casio’s category guidance, then verify the model-specific manual.
- Controls and construction: Check whether the watch has a crown, pushers or a caseback that must be handled in a particular way.
- Condition: Ask when the gaskets were last replaced and whether the case has been opened for a battery change.
- Service evidence: Prefer a watch with documented inspection if you intend to swim or snorkel.
The better water-use choice is the watch with the appropriate marking and a known, healthy sealing system—not automatically the one with the largest number.
