In the documented experimental versions of Minecraft, the Potion of Freezing applies the Freezing effect. An affected player shakes, jumps less high, gradually becomes frozen in a way that resembles standing in Powdered Snow, and eventually takes damage. Leather armor prevents the freezing damage, but it does not stop the effect from being applied or remove it. Mobs that are vulnerable to freezing take five times the normal damage from the effect. The potion can be brewed with Ice Balls, although the exact recipe and availability depend on whether you are playing the Bedrock Preview or Java Snapshot documented below.
What the Potion of Freezing does
The Potion of Freezing is a status-effect potion documented in Minecraft Preview 26.60.29 for Bedrock Edition and Minecraft 26.4 Snapshot 3 for Java Edition. Its purpose is to apply the Freezing effect to the entity that receives it. The effect behaves like an imposed cold condition rather than an instant attack: the target shows physical symptoms, loses some mobility, accumulates freezing, and can ultimately take damage.

The official notes describe four important stages or characteristics:
- The affected player shakes.
- The player’s jump height is reduced.
- The player gradually becomes frozen, similarly to the condition caused by Powdered Snow.
- The frozen player eventually takes damage.
The notes do not state an exact duration for the potion or the Freezing effect. That means you should not rely on a specific number of seconds when planning a trap, combat strategy, or test. The documented behavior establishes what the effect does, but not how long it lasts in every experimental build.

How the Freezing effect feels and behaves on players
Shaking and visual feedback
Shaking is the immediate warning that the effect is active. It provides visible feedback that the player has been affected before the damaging part of the mechanic becomes decisive. In a multiplayer fight, the animation can also help identify which player has been targeted.
Lower jump height
Freezing reduces jump height. This matters whenever movement depends on jumping over terrain, escaping a pit, climbing irregular ground, or avoiding an attacker. It can make a route that is normally easy to traverse less reliable, especially when the player is already moving through a confined area.

Progressive freezing
The target gradually becomes frozen in a manner comparable to being inside Powdered Snow. This is not described as an instant full freeze. The gradual behavior gives the target a window to respond, put on suitable equipment, or move away from danger, provided the player has enough time and room to act.
Eventual damage
After the freezing state progresses, the affected player takes damage. The official documentation does not give a universal damage interval or a fixed total amount for players, so those values should be treated as build-dependent until the relevant version specifies them. The reliable conclusion is that Freezing is both a movement impairment and a damaging status effect, not merely a cosmetic animation.
Does leather armor stop the effect?
Leather armor interacts with the Freezing effect in the same protective way it does with Powdered Snow: it prevents the player from freezing. This protection does not prevent the potion from being applied. A player can still receive the Freezing effect, see the associated symptoms, and remain affected while wearing leather armor.
Rank #2
Leather armor also does not remove an effect that is already active. Its role is to prevent the freezing consequence, not to function as a cure or cleanser. In practical terms, equipping leather is preventative protection against the freeze itself; it is not an antidote that reverses the potion.

- Freezing: leather armor prevents the player from becoming frozen as with Powdered Snow.
- Removal: leather armor does not remove the Freezing effect once applied.
The notes do not specify whether every piece of leather armor is required, nor do they describe a partial-protection rule. Do not assume that a single leather item provides the complete documented protection unless the specific build’s in-game behavior confirms it.
What happens to mobs?
The Freezing effect can affect mobs as well as players. Mobs that are vulnerable to freezing take additional damage, and both the Bedrock Preview and Java Snapshot notes specify a five-times damage multiplier for those vulnerable mobs.
The multiplier applies to mobs that the game identifies as vulnerable to freezing; it is not a blanket statement that every mob takes five times as much damage. The documentation also does not say that every mob is vulnerable, so the target’s built-in resistance remains important. A mob that is not vulnerable should not be assumed to receive the same multiplied damage simply because the potion was used.
This makes the potion potentially significant against susceptible targets. Unlike its player-facing movement effects, the clearest numerical combat detail supplied for mobs is the five-times multiplier. The official notes do not provide a separate player multiplier or a complete list of vulnerable mob types.

How to brew a Potion of Freezing
Both documented editions say that Ice Balls can be used to brew a Potion of Freezing. The notes establish Ice Balls as the relevant brewing ingredient, but they do not provide a complete brewing-stand sequence, base-potion requirement, or quantity in the supplied material. Use the recipe shown by the experimental build you are running rather than importing a recipe from an older community proposal.
Bedrock Edition Preview 26.60.29
- Use a Bedrock Edition Preview build identified as 26.60.29 or a later build that retains the same experimental mechanic.
- Enable or enter the experimental feature set in which the Freezing effect is documented.
- Use Ice Balls in the brewing process as specified by that preview.
- Test the resulting potion in a controlled area, because the preview notes do not establish a stable-release guarantee or an exact duration.
Preview behavior can change before release. A world created with experimental features may not behave identically after an update, so keep backups if the potion is being tested in an important world.
Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 3
- Run Java Snapshot 26.4 Snapshot 3, or a later snapshot whose notes confirm that the mechanic remains available.
- Use Ice Balls for brewing the Potion of Freezing.
- Verify the potion’s effect in the snapshot before using it in a permanent build or map.
The Java snapshot documentation confirms the Ice Ball ingredient but, in the supplied notes, does not state a duration or a complete list of brewing inputs beyond that ingredient. Snapshot mechanics are developmental and may be revised or removed before a regular release.
Arrows of Freezing: the two documented methods
The effect can be converted into arrows, but the method differs between the two editions’ documented builds.

Bedrock cauldron method
In the Bedrock Preview notes, arrows are made by dipping them into a cauldron filled with Potion of Freezing. This is a cauldron-based conversion, so it should not be replaced with the Java crafting pattern when playing Bedrock Preview. The notes do not specify how many arrows a filled cauldron supports or how much potion is consumed per conversion.
Rank #4
Java crafting method
In Java Snapshot 26.4 Snapshot 3, place a Lingering Potion of Freezing in the center and surround it with eight arrows. This is the documented recipe for Arrows of Freezing in that snapshot. It is distinct from Bedrock’s cauldron dipping process and should be followed only in the Java build that supports it.
Bedrock Preview versus Java Snapshot
The core description is consistent across the two official notes: players shake, jump lower, gradually freeze in a Powdered-Snow-like way, and eventually take damage; leather armor prevents freezing without blocking or removing the effect; and vulnerable mobs receive five-times damage. The practical differences are the development channel and the arrow-making method.

Because both builds are pre-release channels, neither note proves that the potion is present in every stable Bedrock or Java version. Before designing a survival strategy, command system, adventure map, or server feature around it, check the changelog for the exact version installed on the target world.

Testing the player effect
Use a small enclosed test area with a safe escape route. Apply the potion to one player, observe the shaking and reduced jump height, and then compare the result with and without leather armor. This separates three different questions: whether the potion applies, whether the target freezes, and whether damage occurs.
Testing mob vulnerability
Test one mob type at a time and record whether it receives the multiplied damage. The five-times rule is limited to mobs vulnerable to freezing, and the supplied notes do not list every qualifying species. Avoid generalizing from one mob to all hostile or passive mobs.
Best Value
Using arrows
Arrows of Freezing are suited to applying the effect at range, but their production follows different edition-specific rules. Confirm whether the target is a player or a freezing-vulnerable mob before relying on the result: a player may suffer movement impairment and eventual damage, while a vulnerable mob is the target for the documented five-times multiplier.

What is still unknown
Several details are intentionally not filled in by the cited official notes:
- The exact duration of the Potion of Freezing.
- The exact timing and amount of damage dealt to players.
- The complete list of mobs vulnerable to freezing.
- The number of arrows supported by a Bedrock cauldron conversion.
- Whether the mechanic will reach a stable release unchanged.
- Whether the same behavior will be available across all platforms and editions.
These are version-sensitive implementation details. Treat demonstrations from a particular preview or snapshot as evidence for that build, not as a promise about every future release.
Version-aware answer
If you are playing the documented experimental builds, the Potion of Freezing is a crowd-control and damage potion: it makes players shake, lowers their jump height, progressively freezes them like Powdered Snow, and eventually damages them. Leather armor prevents the freeze but does not block or clear the status effect. Freezing-vulnerable mobs take five times the normal effect damage. Ice Balls are used to brew it, while Arrows of Freezing are made through a cauldron in Bedrock Preview and a Lingering Potion surrounded by eight arrows in Java Snapshot.
