Sprites are also unavailable in competitive modes, so Honey Sprite can only function in a mode that enables the Sprite system.
What the Honey Sprite does
Honey Sprite is a Sprite power in Fortnite. Its documented trigger is simple: deal damage with a ranged weapon. When the chance-based effect succeeds, bees spawn at the hit location. The v42.40 update notes describe it as: “Chance to spawn bees at the hit location upon dealing damage with a ranged weapon.” The dedicated Honey Sprite listing on Fortnite.GG uses the same wording.

That wording answers the central question but also sets important boundaries. Honey Sprite does not promise bees after every projectile, and the description does not say that the bees automatically appear around your character, follow you, or spawn whenever you fire. The event is tied to a ranged hit that actually deals damage, with the spawn point tied to where that hit registered.

How to activate Honey Sprite in a match
There is no separate button or ability value published for Honey Sprite. Activation follows the Sprite system’s equip-and-use model: find the Sprite, equip it, then satisfy its trigger condition with a ranged weapon.
- Find Honey Sprite during a mode that supports Sprites. Epic describes Sprites as small helpers that can be found and equipped during a match. Competitive modes are excluded, so choose an eligible mode first.
- Equip Honey Sprite. A Sprite must be equipped for you to receive its Sprite Power. The exact inventory or interaction label can vary with the current Fortnite interface, but the relevant action is equipping the Honey Sprite rather than merely seeing or carrying it.
- Use a ranged weapon. The published trigger is damage from a ranged weapon. Do not treat movement, a melee swing, a pickaxe hit or environmental damage as confirmed Honey Sprite triggers.
- Deal damage with the shot. The description says “upon dealing damage,” so firing without a damaging hit does not satisfy the condition that is documented. The sources do not establish whether every kind of zero-damage hit, shield interaction or special projectile behaves differently.
- Look at the registered hit location. If the random proc occurs, bees spawn where the ranged hit landed. Because the effect is chance-based, several successful damaging shots can produce no bees without indicating that the Sprite is broken.
This is an activation requirement, not a promise about the result of any particular shot. The game can register valid ranged damage and still fail to produce bees because the effect has a chance rather than a guaranteed proc.
Does Honey Sprite spawn bees every shot?
No. “Chance to spawn” explicitly means the effect is probabilistic. A damaging ranged hit is the opportunity for a proc, not a guaranteed summon. The cited v42.40 notes and Honey Sprite listing do not publish an exact percentage, an internal cooldown, a maximum number of consecutive failures, or a pity mechanic.
That distinction matters when you test it in a live match. One hit that produces bees confirms that the power can proc; one or several hits that do not produce bees do not prove that it is inactive. Without a published rate, a short test cannot establish how often the effect should appear.
- Guaranteed condition: none is stated for an individual shot.
- Documented opportunity: a ranged weapon deals damage.
- Possible result: bees spawn at the hit location.
- Published proc percentage: no exact value is given in the cited descriptions.
What is confirmed, and what remains unpublished?
The following separates the mechanic that Epic describes from details that players may reasonably want but that are not supplied in the cited material.
| Mechanic | What the available description establishes |
|---|---|
| Trigger | Damage dealt with a ranged weapon. |
| Effect | A chance to spawn bees at the hit location. |
| Reliability | Chance-based, so a valid damaging hit can fail to produce bees. |
| Variant | Honey Sprite is identified as an Epic base variant; the v42.40 notes label it “Design A Sprite Winner!” |
| Competitive availability | Epic support says Sprites are not available for competitive modes. |
No confirmed number is provided for bee damage, damage type, duration, tick interval, targeting range, travel behavior, maximum simultaneous bees, stacking, or any status effect. The sources also do not establish whether bees can be triggered by melee attacks, pickaxe hits, environmental damage or a projectile that registers no damage. Those questions should remain open rather than being filled with values from hearsay or an unrelated Sprite.
Can you use Honey Sprite in ranked or competitive?
Epic’s support guidance states: “Sprites are not available for competitive modes.” Honey Sprite is part of the Sprite system, so it should be treated as unavailable wherever Fortnite applies that competitive restriction. In practical terms, do not plan a ranked or tournament loadout around Honey Sprite unless Epic changes the mode rules and explicitly enables Sprites.

The restriction is about mode availability, not about the Sprite failing its trigger. In an eligible mode, a ranged damaging hit can present the chance to spawn bees. In a competitive mode where Sprites are disabled, equipping or seeking the power cannot make it function because the system itself is unavailable.
How Honey Sprite fits into Fortnite’s Sprite system
Epic describes Sprites as “little helpers on the battlefield” that can be found and equipped to grant a special Sprite Power. Honey Sprite is therefore an effect-granting Sprite, not a conventional weapon that occupies the same role as the ranged weapon used to trigger it.
Sprites can level up through exploration, eliminations and surviving the Storm. Those are general progression rules for the system. The cited Honey Sprite material does not attach a published numeric increase to those levels, nor does it say that leveling changes the bee proc rate, bee damage or duration.
Other Sprite examples show how varied the system’s powers can be:
Recommended Free Tools
| Sprite example | Documented immediate effect | What this demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| Air Sprite | Creates an updraft. | A Sprite power can alter movement and positioning. |
| Water Sprite | Creates a healing fountain. | A Sprite power can provide a temporary recovery resource. |
| Earth Sprite | Consumes fed items in exchange for rewards. | A Sprite power can convert items into another benefit. |
| Honey Sprite | Has a chance to spawn bees at a ranged-hit location. | Its effect is tied to ranged combat and is not guaranteed. |
The examples are useful for understanding the system, but they do not supply missing Honey Sprite statistics. An Air updraft or Water healing fountain should not be used as a benchmark for bee duration or damage.
What “at the hit location” means for play
The documented spawn point is the location where the ranged hit registered. That makes the power location-dependent: the bees are associated with the impact point rather than with a separately described activation circle around the player. The description does not say how far bees can move from that point, how they choose targets or whether they persist after the original target leaves.
For practical testing, watch the impact area immediately after a damaging ranged hit instead of looking only at your own character. A missed shot, a shot blocked before damage is dealt or a shot that simply fails the random proc can all result in no visible bees, and the published description does not provide a visual indicator that distinguishes those cases.
Because the sources do not publish bee behavior, avoid treating a visual observation as a universal rule. Seeing bees near an opponent does not establish a fixed attack radius, and not seeing damage numbers does not prove that the bees have no effect. Only the spawn trigger and location are clearly described.
Honey Sprite troubleshooting checklist
If the power appears not to work, check the documented requirements before assuming a bug:
- Mode: Confirm that you are not in a competitive mode, where Epic says Sprites are unavailable.
- Equipment: Confirm that Honey Sprite is equipped, rather than merely found or carried.
- Weapon category: Confirm that the attack came from a ranged weapon. The sources do not confirm melee, pickaxe or environmental activation.
- Actual damage: Confirm that the shot dealt damage. The trigger is damage, not simply pressing fire or landing a non-damaging impact.
- Randomness: Allow for failed procs. No published percentage guarantees that a small number of hits will produce bees.
- Observation point: Check the hit location for the effect, since that is where the description places the spawn.
If all of those conditions are satisfied and bees still do not appear, the available descriptions do not provide enough information to diagnose a deeper cause. There is no cited value for an internal cooldown, a cap, a hidden level requirement or a distance limit, so such a conclusion would be speculation.
What Honey Sprite does not tell you
The short description is intentionally narrow. It tells you when the effect may occur and where it begins, but not what happens afterward in numerical terms. In particular, the cited sources do not answer:
- How much damage an individual bee deals.
- Whether bee damage is repeated over time or delivered once.
- How long bees remain active.
- How many bees can exist from one player or one match.
- Whether multiple procs stack their damage or duration.
- How bees select targets or how far they can travel.
- Whether leveling changes any of those properties.
That absence is important when comparing builds or explaining the power to another player. You can accurately say that Honey Sprite may create a bee presence at a ranged-hit location. You cannot accurately attach a damage-per-tick figure, duration, proc rate or guaranteed elimination effect to it from the published wording.
Is Honey Sprite worth equipping?
The answer depends on whether you value a chance-based combat effect and can play in a mode that enables Sprites. Honey Sprite adds a possible consequence to successful ranged damage without replacing the weapon’s normal function. Its uncertainty is the trade-off: the trigger condition is clear, but the proc rate and the bees’ numerical performance are not published in the cited material.
It is most straightforward to evaluate during ordinary matches by tracking three separate facts: whether your shot dealt damage, whether bees appeared at the registered hit location, and what the bees visibly did afterward. Keep those observations separate. A successful spawn confirms the effect; it does not reveal a universal percentage or damage value.
Bottom line for Honey Sprite
Honey Sprite can spawn bees where a ranged-weapon hit deals damage, but only with a chance rather than every time. Equip it in a Sprite-enabled mode, use a ranged weapon, and make a damaging hit. Competitive modes do not support Sprites according to Epic. The published descriptions stop there: exact bee damage, duration, proc percentage, targeting rules and other detailed limits are not established.
