The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), primarily through its Office of Science, funds fundamental research and the scientific facilities that enable it. Its fields include advanced computing, materials and chemistry, biology and environmental science, fusion and plasma science, high-energy and nuclear physics, and isotope research. DOE’s October 1, 2026 announcement describes an FY 2027 annual Open Call offering up to $400 million across seven program areas; it is a route for research not covered by more specific topical notices, not a complete list of everything DOE supports.

What the FY 2027 Open Call covers

DOE’s October 1, 2026 announcement says the Office of Science Open Call offers up to $400 million for research spanning seven program areas. The opportunity is meant for FY 2027 research areas not covered by more specific topical notices, and DOE says the call is issued annually at the beginning of each fiscal year.

Program area named in the Open Call Research scope in the wider Office of Science portfolio
Advanced Scientific Computing Research Advanced computing, applied mathematics, simulation, and related foundational work.
Basic Energy Sciences Materials sciences, chemistry, and foundational research relevant to energy and technology.
Biological and Environmental Research Biological systems and environmental research.
Fusion Energy Sciences Fusion energy and plasma science.
High Energy Physics Fundamental research in high-energy physics.
Nuclear Physics Fundamental nuclear physics research.
Isotope R&D and Production Isotope science, development, and production.

The table combines the seven areas named for the Open Call with examples in DOE’s wider portfolio; it does not mean every listed subject is included in every notice. The Open Call is intended to complement, rather than replace, more specific FY 2027 calls. A particular research topic may therefore be addressed through a targeted notice instead.

How the wider Office of Science portfolio is organized

The Office of Science describes its mission as delivering scientific discoveries and major tools that improve understanding of nature and advance U.S. energy, economic, and national security. Its work includes both research awards and the design, development, construction, and operation of scientific user facilities. DOE identifies eight program offices:

The FY 2026 congressional budget request overview gives a broader snapshot of research interests across this portfolio: fusion energy and plasma physics; nuclear and high-energy physics; materials sciences and chemistry; biological systems; applied mathematics; next-generation high-performance computing and simulation; artificial intelligence and machine learning; isotope science and production; quantum information sciences; and basic research advancing accelerator and energy technologies. These are examples of portfolio areas, not a guarantee that a given funding notice will accept every kind of project.

How to interpret DOE’s funding figures

DOE publishes figures for different purposes and on different pages. They should not be treated as interchangeable budget totals.

  • Up to $400 million: the ceiling announced by DOE on October 1, 2026, for the FY 2027 Office of Science Open Call. This is the opportunity’s announced maximum, not a promise that every applicant or program area will receive funding.
  • $8.2 billion: the Office of Science FY 2026 funding page’s figure for the research and facility portfolio it describes.
  • $7,092.0 million: the Office of Science FY 2026 congressional budget request figure. It is a request, not an enacted FY 2026 appropriation.
  • Portfolio reach reported on the FY 2026 funding page: more than 25,000 researchers, over 300 institutions, all 17 DOE national laboratories, 28 open-access scientific user facilities, and over 43,000 facility users each year.
  • Awards page reach: DOE says competitively selected awards support more than 300 colleges and universities, nonprofit and for-profit research organizations, and all 17 national laboratories.

The Office of Science also reported in a 2026 graduate research announcement that more than 1,300 graduate awardees from over 170 U.S. universities had participated since 2014. That is a cumulative program figure, not an annual award count.

Who can apply, and how are awards made?

DOE issues Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) and DOE National Laboratory Announcements. Eligibility depends on the individual notice. FOAs may be open to one or more types of institutions, while DOE National Laboratory Announcements are restricted to DOE laboratories. Notices may be paired in a topical area or issued on their own.

Office of Science basic research is awarded competitively using peer review, from single-investigator grants to larger team activities. Applications undergo subject-matter merit review, and selections also depend on the notice’s other criteria, including funding availability. DOE says it does not accept unsolicited proposals for financial assistance.

  1. Find a current notice whose research scope matches the proposed work.
  2. Read that notice for applicant eligibility, scope, deadlines, award terms, and submission instructions; there is no universal set of rules or award size for all Office of Science programs.
  3. Submit through the process specified in the notice. A strong scientific fit alone does not override eligibility requirements, review criteria, or available funding.

Where to check actual awards and project examples

Program descriptions show what DOE may support; award records show which projects and organizations received support. The Office of Science awards page links to state-level funding information, an interactive grants map, a public abstract search, and topical award listings. Those official resources are the appropriate starting points for checking recipients and project abstracts rather than inferring awards from a program’s name.

A student research route: the graduate program example

DOE’s February 11, 2026 announcement described the first 2026 solicitation for the Office of Science Graduate Student Research program. It offered supplemental awards for outstanding U.S. graduate students to conduct part of their thesis research at a DOE National Laboratory with a laboratory scientist. The listed deadline was May 6, 2026, which has passed as of October 2026; it is an example of a past opportunity, not evidence that applications are currently open.

The announcement listed fields including physics, chemistry, materials science, planetary science, geosciences, non-medical biosciences, fusion science and engineering, mathematics, computing, engineering, microelectronics, quantum information science, and AI. Students should use a current solicitation to determine present eligibility, fields, and deadlines.
