Samsung Camera Assistant is a Good Lock module that adds switches and timing controls to the standard Galaxy Camera app. It lets you decide how much automatic processing the camera uses, how it changes lenses, how it captures action, and how long the preview remains active. Samsung first documented it for the Galaxy S22 series on One UI 5 or later; Samsung Indonesia also documents it on the Galaxy A57 5G and Galaxy A37 5G. That is not a complete worldwide compatibility list: the module and its individual controls can vary by model, region, carrier and One UI build.
What Camera Assistant is
Camera Assistant is not a replacement camera app. It is an add-on for Samsung’s stock Camera app, delivered through Samsung’s Good Lock platform. After installation, it exposes extra options in or alongside Camera settings. Those options change automated behavior that is normally fixed by the phone’s software.

The module is useful when the default camera makes a choice you do not want—for example, applying a strong HDR look, switching lenses at an inconvenient moment, delaying a shot while it prioritizes focus, or leaving the display bright during a long recording. It does not turn a phone into a fully manual camera and cannot add lenses or image quality that the hardware does not provide.
What each Camera Assistant control does
The exact menu can differ between phones and software versions. Samsung’s documented controls include the following.
#1 Best Overall
- The S22 uses a flat (non‑curved) 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 120 Hz refresh that dynamically adjusts between 48 – 120 Hz depending on content — which means smoother scrolling and better battery efficiency when high refresh isn’t needed.
- Its main rear camera features a 50 MP sensor with what Samsung calls “Tetra‑binning,” delivering stronger detail in bright light and surprisingly good low‑light photos compared to many older flagships.
- The build quality is designed to feel premium and durable: it uses an Armor Aluminum frame combined with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on front and back, which gives better scratch and drop resistance — nice if you want a relatively compact but rugged flagship.
- For video content and editing, the S22 supports 8K recording — rare for a “smaller” flagship. That means you can shoot very high-resolution video, useful if you care about future‑proofing footage or cropping/editing later.
- The phone strikes a balance of compactness and performance — in a world of increasingly large phones, the S22 remains fairly pocket‑friendly while still packing the 4 nm flagship‑class chipset (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 depending on region) for smooth daily performance.
| Control | What it changes | When it helps | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto HDR | Turns the camera’s automatic HDR behavior on or off. | Use it when you want to retain HDR’s expanded highlight and shadow treatment, or avoid the pronounced HDR appearance in a scene where a more natural rendering is preferable. | The visible result depends on the scene, camera mode and lens. |
| Soften pictures / Photo Softening | Smooths sharp edges and fine textures in still photographs. | Can make portraits or other images look less harsh when the default processing emphasizes texture. | Too much smoothing can remove fine detail; the available wording may be “Soften pictures” or “Photo Softening.” |
| Auto lens switching | Controls whether the camera automatically changes lenses according to zoom level, lighting and subject distance. | Disable or limit automatic switching when you want a steadier field of view or consistent rendering across a sequence. | Only lenses fitted to the phone can be used, and switching behavior is still constrained by light and focus conditions. |
| Video recording in Photo mode | Controls long-press video capture from the Photo mode screen. | Useful when you want to start a quick video without changing modes first, or when you prefer to prevent an accidental long-press recording. | This affects the Photo-mode shortcut, not the dedicated Video mode. |
| Timer shot count | Sets how many images are captured after the timer expires: 1, 3, 5 or 7. | A burst after the countdown improves the chance of getting an expression, blink-free group photo or usable frame when the phone is mounted. | The count is a choice among those four values; it is not an unlimited burst setting. |
| Faster shutter | Prioritizes quicker capture when you press the shutter. | Helps with children, pets, sports and other moving subjects where a delayed exposure can miss the moment. | Samsung describes a maximum of up to seven pictures per second. Faster capture can involve a different balance between speed, focus and processing. |
| Camera timeout | Chooses when the camera preview turns off: 1, 2, 5 or 10 minutes. | A longer timeout is practical for tripod work or monitoring a scene; a shorter one reduces the time the preview remains active. | This is a preview timeout, not a guarantee that recording will continue for the selected duration. |
| Clean HDMI preview | Shows the camera preview on an HDMI display without camera menus or shutter buttons overlaid. | Useful when an external monitor should show an unobstructed framing image. | The phone and display connection must support the required HDMI output path; Camera Assistant only changes what is shown in the preview. |
Additional options highlighted for the Galaxy A57 5G and A37 5G
Samsung Indonesia’s August 19, 2026 guidance for the Galaxy A57 5G and Galaxy A37 5G calls out several practical settings. Their exact presence can still depend on the phone’s software build and the active camera mode.
Prioritize Focus Over Speed
This option favors achieving focus over releasing the shutter as quickly as possible. It is the more sensible choice for a moving subject when a sharp frame matters more than the shortest possible delay. A speed-first setting can be preferable for unpredictable action, but it may accept a frame before focus is fully settled.
Photo Softening
Samsung highlights Photo Softening as a way to produce a less aggressively sharpened look. It can be useful for portraits or scenes where hair, skin or fine textures appear overly crisp. Evaluate it at the viewing size you actually use; smoothing that looks attractive on a phone screen may hide detail when the image is cropped.
Distortion Correction
Distortion Correction is intended to make wide-angle scenes and portraits look more natural by compensating for lens characteristics. The trade-off is that correction can alter the edges of the frame, so check the composition after enabling it if you rely on a very wide field of view.

- This pre-owned product has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon qualified vendors.
- This product is in "Excellent condition". The screen and body show no signs of cosmetic damage visible from 12 inches away.
- This product will have a battery that exceeds 80% capacity relative to new.
Dim Screen While Recording
Dim Screen While Recording lowers display brightness during a long recording to reduce screen power use. It changes the phone’s display, not the recorded video. Make sure you can still monitor framing and focus in the available light before relying on a dimmed screen.
Which Galaxy phones support Camera Assistant?
Samsung’s public examples establish support, but they do not constitute an exhaustive worldwide list. Availability is tied to the exact model, One UI version, region and sometimes network provider. Even on a supported phone, individual controls can vary by selected mode or lens.
| Galaxy family or model | Documented requirement or evidence | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S22 series | Samsung announced Camera Assistant for S22 devices running One UI 5 or later. | The rollout timing could differ by market, model variant and network provider. Verify the current Galaxy Store listing and the phone’s Good Lock or Camera settings. |
| Galaxy A57 5G | Samsung Indonesia explicitly says the model includes Camera Assistant through Good Lock. | Samsung’s 2026 guidance highlights focus-versus-speed, Photo Softening, Distortion Correction and Dim Screen While Recording. The Indonesian-market documentation should not automatically be read as confirmation for every region or carrier variant. |
| Galaxy A37 5G | Samsung Indonesia explicitly says the model includes Camera Assistant through Good Lock. | As with the A57 5G, the available module and controls should be checked against the phone’s regional software and One UI build. |
Samsung states that Good Lock application availability and settings may vary by device and software version. Therefore, a Galaxy phone not named in the table is not automatically unsupported, and a phone that appears compatible in another country may not show the module on your device.

- In Good Lock, open the Life up section.
- Select Camera Assistant.
- Tap the download or install control shown for the module and wait for it to finish.
Samsung also says Camera Assistant can be downloaded directly from the Galaxy Store. After installation, open the Camera app, enter Settings, and use the Camera Assistant entry to open its controls. The label and location can change with One UI revisions, so search within Camera settings if the entry is not immediately visible.
Why Camera Assistant may be missing
Your model or software build is not eligible
Support is not determined by the Galaxy name alone. A model variant, One UI release, region or carrier configuration can affect whether Good Lock lists the module. The S22 announcement, for example, specifies One UI 5 or later rather than every S22 configuration at every software level.
Good Lock or the module is unavailable in your region
Samsung documents regional and device variation for Good Lock applications. If Camera Assistant does not appear in Good Lock’s Life up section or in the Galaxy Store, check the store listing while signed into the Samsung account and region used by that phone. Do not assume that changing unrelated camera settings will make an unavailable module appear.

Feature availability can depend on the selected camera mode or lens. A control that appears on one Galaxy model, or while using the rear camera, may not be shown for another mode, front camera or lens. Return to the supported mode and inspect Camera Assistant again before treating the omission as an installation failure.

The phone has not received the required One UI release
Install the One UI version required for your model if Samsung offers it, then check Good Lock and Camera settings again. The documented S22 requirement is One UI 5 or later; other models can have different requirements that Samsung may publish by market.
You are checking the wrong app
Camera Assistant is a Good Lock module that modifies the stock Camera app. It may not appear as a conventional standalone camera icon. Open the Camera app’s Settings menu after installation to confirm that the module is connected.

Moving children, pets or sports
Start with Faster shutter when the main problem is missing the moment. On models that offer it, compare that behavior with Prioritize Focus Over Speed: the latter is preferable when a sharp subject is more important than the absolute fastest release. Use a short sequence and review the frames rather than assuming every frame will have identical focus.
Tripod self-portraits and group photos
Choose the timer interval in the Camera app as usual, then set Camera Assistant’s timer shot count to 3, 5 or 7 if one exposure is not enough. A multi-shot timer gives everyone several chances without walking back to the phone between attempts.

Portraits and highly textured subjects
Try Photo Softening when default sharpening makes skin, hair or fabric look brittle. Keep it off when preserving fine texture is the priority. For wide-angle portraits or scenes with visibly stretched edges, test Distortion Correction if your model provides it.
Consistent framing across a sequence
Review Auto lens switching before shooting. Automatic changes can be useful when light or subject distance changes, but disabling the behavior can make a sequence more consistent when you need the same perspective from frame to frame.
Long monitoring or recording sessions
Set Camera timeout to 5 or 10 minutes when the preview must remain available for setup or monitoring. During an actual recording, Dim Screen While Recording can reduce display power use on models that provide it; verify that the dimmed view remains usable.
External-monitor framing
Enable Clean HDMI preview when an HDMI display should show only the image area. This removes menus and buttons from the preview feed, making composition easier for the person watching the monitor.
How to compare Camera Assistant support when choosing a Galaxy phone
Do not compare phones solely by whether a product page says “Camera Assistant.” Check five separate questions for the exact regional model:
- Is the module offered for the installed One UI build? Confirm the Galaxy Store and Good Lock listing on the phone or the same regional variant.
- Which individual controls are present? One model may expose timer counts or lens switching while another presents a different subset.
- What camera hardware is available? Camera Assistant cannot provide a telephoto, ultrawide or other lens that the phone does not physically include.
- Does your region or carrier receive the same software? Samsung documents market and provider variation, so verify the actual variant rather than relying on a review of an imported model.
- How long will software support continue? Camera Assistant behavior can change with One UI updates; update support matters if you expect to keep using the controls over several years.
This approach separates app support from camera capability. Two supported Galaxy phones can still produce different results because their sensors, lenses, processing pipelines and regional software differ.
What Camera Assistant cannot do
- It cannot add manual controls that Samsung has not exposed for the specific model or mode.
- It cannot create a missing lens or overcome the optical limits of the phone’s camera hardware.
- It cannot guarantee a fixed frame rate, focus result or image style in every lighting condition.
- It does not make every setting universal; Samsung notes that controls may depend on device, software version, mode and lens.
Bottom line
Camera Assistant is most valuable when you want the stock Galaxy Camera to behave more deliberately: control HDR and smoothing, stop unwanted lens changes, capture several timer frames, favor speed or focus, keep the preview active longer, or send a clean image to an HDMI display. Samsung documents it on the Galaxy S22 series with One UI 5 or later and on the Galaxy A57 5G and A37 5G in Samsung Indonesia’s documentation. Because support is regional and software-dependent, the reliable test is the Galaxy Store and Good Lock listing for your exact phone, followed by the Camera app’s Settings menu.
