The word on a jacket tells you very little until you read the full fabric name. Pertex Shield is the family associated with waterproof-breathable shells; Pertex Quantum is a lightweight, downproof, windproof and water-resistant fabric used mainly for insulated garments; and Pertex Quantum Air is a lighter, softer, water-resistant fabric for windshells or insulated jackets. The finished jacket’s seams, zippers, hood and construction determine how well it performs in real weather.
That is why “Pertex jacket” is not a sufficient buying description. Identify the exact Pertex variant, then match its intended job—sustained rain, brief showers, wind protection or insulation—to the garment’s construction.

What the Pertex label actually tells you
Pertex is the name of a manufacturer’s range of technical textile technologies. It is similar to seeing a vehicle’s engine family on a specification sheet: useful, but not enough to predict every finished product. Different Pertex fabrics use different constructions and are designed for different jobs.
A jacket marked only “Pertex” could be a waterproof shell, a down jacket’s outer fabric or a lightweight windshirt. The decisive information is the word that follows the brand name and, where available, the complete fabric version listed on the sewn-in label or the manufacturer’s model specification.

- Shield Revolve: a mono-material waterproof-breathable design made entirely from recycled polyester, developed to be easier to recycle than conventional multi-material constructions.
These categories overlap in branding but not in purpose. A Quantum jacket should not be treated as a rain shell simply because its fabric resists a shower, and a Shield shell should not be expected to provide the loft or hand-feel of a down jacket’s Quantum liner or shell.
Pertex Shield: the rain-shell family
What Shield is designed to do
Shield is the Pertex family to examine when your primary requirement is a waterproof-breathable outer layer. Shield fabrics use a waterproof membrane beneath an outer face fabric. The membrane blocks liquid water while allowing water vapour to escape, subject to the particular variant, test method and garment construction.
“Shield” still does not identify one universal specification. A jacket may use a particular Shield version, a different number of layers, a different face fabric or a different backing. Those choices affect weight, durability, feel and moisture management. Look for the complete variant name rather than assuming every Shield garment performs identically.
Shield Air and air permeability
Shield Air is a specific Shield variant with an air-permeable membrane structure. Pertex describes it this way: “the open structure of the Shield Air membrane allows air to pass through, whilst still offering effective wind resistance.” That statement applies to Shield Air, not automatically to every Pertex fabric or every Shield product.
Air permeability and vapour breathability are related but different ideas. Air permeability concerns the movement of air through the material; vapour breathability concerns moisture vapour moving through the construction. A garment can be designed to manage vapour without being freely air permeable. When comparing products, treat any claim about ventilation as a claim about the exact fabric and jacket design.
Shield Pro and other variants
Independent outdoor coverage commonly groups Shield, Shield Air and Shield Pro as Pertex waterproof fabric families. The family name is only the starting point: a shell’s practical protection also depends on whether seams are sealed, how the hood overlaps the face, how the cuffs close and whether the front zip is protected.

Pertex Quantum: insulation and down protection
Why Quantum is used on insulated jackets
Quantum is a tightly woven, lightweight fabric designed to be downproof. Its weave helps prevent down or fine synthetic insulation from escaping while allowing the fill to loft. That combination makes it common on puffer jackets, insulated clothing and sleeping bags.
Pertex describes Quantum as windproof and water-resistant. A durable water-repellent (DWR) finish is intended to shed light rain or snow from the face fabric. This is useful protection for an insulated layer, but it is not the same as a waterproof-breathable rain shell. Prolonged rain, pressure from pack straps or wet conditions can eventually overcome a water-resistant woven fabric and its finish.
What Quantum does not imply
The Quantum name does not establish a waterproof membrane, a particular hydrostatic-head result or a guaranteed level of seam sealing. If you need protection during sustained rain, choose a garment identified as a waterproof shell and verify its construction. If you need warmth with resistance to wind and brief precipitation, Quantum may be the more appropriate fabric choice.
Pertex Quantum Air: a lighter wind-shell option
Quantum Air is a light, soft, water-resistant fabric intended for a standalone windshell or as the shell fabric on an insulated garment. It prioritizes low weight, softness and air movement compared with a conventional waterproof shell construction.
Quantum Air is not interchangeable with Shield. A Quantum Air windshirt can be an excellent layer for blocking wind and handling a passing sprinkle, but its water-resistant woven construction should not be presented as equivalent to a waterproof-breathable membrane shell. Check the garment specification if the manufacturer uses a more specific treatment or construction.

Shield Revolve is described by Pertex as a mono-material made entirely from recycled polyester. The design goal is to simplify recycling compared with conventional waterproof-breathable fabrics that combine several material types. “Designed to be easier to recycle” is a construction claim, not a promise that every jacket will be collected, processed or turned into a new product.

Actual recycling depends on the garment’s other components, local collection systems, sorting technology and the condition in which the jacket is returned. Treat Revolve’s mono-material design as an effort to improve recyclability, not as proof of a guaranteed recycling outcome.
Is a Pertex jacket waterproof?
Sometimes, but the word Pertex alone cannot answer the question. A Shield shell is the relevant Pertex direction for waterproof protection. Quantum and Quantum Air are water-resistant woven fabrics used primarily for insulation or wind protection. Their DWR finishes are intended to shed light rain or snow, not to replace a waterproof membrane.
Use this quick interpretation:
| Label on the garment | Primary job | Water protection described for the fabric | Typical garment role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pertex Shield | Waterproof-breathable shell | Waterproof membrane construction; exact performance depends on variant and garment | Rain jacket or shell |
| Pertex Shield Air | Waterproof shell with an air-permeable membrane structure | Waterproof shell family; Pertex also describes effective wind resistance | Active-use rain shell |
| Pertex Quantum | Lightweight, downproof insulation shell or liner | Windproof and water-resistant; DWR for light rain or snow | Down or synthetic insulated jacket |
| Pertex Quantum Air | Light, soft wind protection | Water-resistant woven fabric | Windshell or lightweight insulated garment |
| Pertex Shield Revolve | Waterproof-breathable shell with mono-material design | Waterproof-breathable family; exact garment details still matter | Shell designed with recycling considerations |
The table describes fabric-family intent, not a guarantee for every product. The jacket’s cut, seam treatment and closures remain part of the waterproof system.

How Pertex compares with other shell fabrics
Comparing “Pertex” with a competing name such as Gore-Tex or eVent is misleading unless you compare exact variants made for the same job. Each brand contains multiple membranes, woven fabrics and garment constructions. A lightweight windshirt, a three-layer mountaineering shell and a down jacket may all use different materials even within one brand family.
1. Compare the weather job first
- Sustained rain: start with a waterproof-breathable shell such as an appropriately specified Shield garment.
- Short showers over insulation: a Quantum jacket’s water-resistant face may be sufficient when warmth is the priority.
- Wind during high-output activity: Quantum Air or another windshell fabric may offer the comfort and low weight you need.
- Snow and mixed conditions: check whether the insulation, face fabric and shell construction are intended to handle the expected exposure; the Pertex name alone is not enough.
2. Separate waterproofing from water resistance
A waterproof-breathable membrane is a different design approach from a tightly woven fabric treated with DWR. Water-resistant fabrics can shed light precipitation while remaining lighter or softer, but they are not automatically suitable for prolonged rain. Conversely, a membrane shell can provide stronger rain protection while adding layers, weight or a less supple feel.
3. Check air movement and moisture management
Shield Air’s stated air permeability is a specific feature. Do not use it as a shorthand for every Pertex shell, and do not treat air permeability as a synonym for vapour breathability. Ventilation zippers, garment fit, backing fabrics and the wearer’s activity level can matter as much as the membrane description.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
4. Examine the whole construction
The outer face fabric is the layer exposed to weather and bonded to, or placed over, the waterproof membrane in a shell construction. DWR is normally applied to that face fabric. Over time, contamination, abrasion and wear can affect how the face wets out, even when the underlying membrane remains intact.
Look for:
- Fully or critically taped seams, depending on the garment’s stated protection level.
- A hood that adjusts around the face and works with the intended helmet or hat.
- Water-resistant or protected zippers and storm flaps where appropriate.
- Cuffs and hem adjustments that limit water entry.
- Face-fabric weight and reinforcement in areas exposed to pack straps or abrasion.
- The number of layers and the presence of a backing or liner, which influence comfort and durability.
As independent technical coverage has noted, seam quality and garment design shape real-world performance. A high-specification fabric in a poorly constructed jacket can protect less effectively than a more modest fabric in a carefully made garment.
5. Weigh the trade-offs
| Decision factor | What to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rain protection | Is the exact fabric a waterproof membrane or a water-resistant woven textile? | Determines whether the jacket is intended for sustained rain or brief exposure. |
| Breathability and comfort | Does the fabric claim vapour breathability or, for a specific variant, air permeability? | Influences comfort during exertion, but cannot be judged from the Pertex name alone. |
| Weight and packability | How many layers and how substantial is the face fabric? | Lighter fabrics usually target packability; heavier constructions may prioritize abrasion resistance. |
| Durability | Where are reinforcements, and what exposure will the jacket see? | Pack straps and repeated abrasion can matter more than a headline membrane name. |
| Construction | Are seams taped and closures designed for the claimed weather? | The garment must prevent water entry at openings and joins, not just through the fabric panel. |
| Care | What does the garment maker specify for washing and reproofing? | Following the jacket’s instructions helps preserve the face treatment and construction. |
How to identify the right Pertex jacket
- Read the complete sewn-in label. Record whether it says Shield, Shield Air, Shield Pro, Shield Revolve, Quantum or Quantum Air. If only “Pertex” appears, find the garment’s official model specification before buying.
- Define the exposure. Decide whether you need protection from sustained rain, occasional showers, wind, snow or only the weather encountered while insulated.
- Verify the construction. Check the number of layers, seam taping, hood, cuffs, hem and zipper protection. A fabric family cannot confirm these details.
- Match the fabric to the job. Choose a Shield-family shell for waterproof protection, Quantum for a downproof insulated garment, or Quantum Air for a light wind-resistant layer.
- Check the manufacturer’s limitations. Look for the exact model’s stated use, care instructions and any qualification about water resistance, breathability or durability.
- Consider the complete system. An insulated Quantum jacket may be comfortable under a separate rain shell; a Shield shell may be more versatile in wet weather but less suitable as a standalone warm layer.
Common mistakes when reading a Pertex specification
Assuming every Pertex fabric is waterproof
The brand name covers both waterproof Shield fabrics and water-resistant Quantum fabrics. Always identify the family.
Using DWR as a synonym for a membrane
DWR helps the outer face shed light precipitation. It does not, by itself, establish waterproof protection through the full garment.
Comparing brand names instead of exact variants
A broad comparison with another shell brand can hide differences in membrane type, layer count, face fabric, seam treatment and intended activity. Compare products built for the same job and look for a common test method before drawing a performance conclusion.

Ignoring openings and seams
Water can enter through a hood, cuff, pocket, zip or untaped seam even when the fabric panel itself resists water. Construction details are part of the weatherproof specification.

Treating recycling design as a recycling guarantee
Shield Revolve’s mono-material approach is intended to make recycling easier, but collection and processing are not assured in every location.
What is and is not established in a cross-brand comparison
There is no single, directly comparable figure in the available product descriptions that ranks Pertex generally against other shell brands for hydrostatic head, breathability, durability or weight. Those values vary by exact fabric version, garment, test method and date. A responsible comparison therefore names the precise materials and reports figures only when they come from equivalent tests.
Without that matched data, the useful conclusion is about intended function: Shield points toward waterproof shells, Quantum toward downproof insulation and Quantum Air toward lightweight wind protection. That functional distinction is more reliable than declaring one brand universally superior.

Practical examples
You need one jacket for frequent rain
Start with a Shield-family shell. Confirm that the model has the seam sealing, hood adjustment and closures expected for sustained rain. Do not select a Quantum puffer merely because its DWR sheds a short shower.
You need a warm jacket for cold, mostly dry conditions
Quantum is designed for this role. Its tightly woven, downproof construction supports loft, while wind resistance and a DWR finish help with light precipitation. Carry a separate waterproof shell if prolonged rain is likely.
You run or hike in changeable wind and occasional drizzle
Quantum Air may suit a low-bulk windshell or an insulated layer where softness and light weight matter. If the forecast calls for hours of rain, move up to a properly constructed Shield shell.
You are choosing a shell with end-of-life considerations
Shield Revolve’s mono-material design is intended to simplify recycling relative to multi-material waterproof-breathable fabrics. Check local collection options and the garment maker’s end-of-life guidance; the fabric design alone cannot guarantee a recycling route.

“Pertex” is a family name, not a promise that a jacket is waterproof. Read the full label: Shield is the waterproof-breathable direction, Quantum is the lightweight downproof and water-resistant insulation fabric, and Quantum Air is the light wind-shell option. Then judge the complete garment—layers, seams, hood, zippers, fit and intended use—rather than ranking a brand name in isolation.
