A parity operator, such as a product of Pauli Z operators, has two eigenvalues. The +1 eigenspace is conventionally called even parity, and the −1 eigenspace is odd parity.
Parity matters because one collective measurement can reveal whether a group satisfies a constraint without revealing every individual qubit value. That makes parity checks central to stabilizer codes, syndrome measurements and quantum-error correction. A single check detects the parity of an error pattern; several compatible checks provide the richer syndrome needed to identify many error locations.

What parity means in quantum computing
For a selected set of qubits, parity is calculated modulo two. If the selected computational-basis positions contain zero, two, four or any other even number of 1 bits, the string has even parity. If they contain one, three, five or another odd number, it has odd parity.
For example, considering three selected positions:
000,011and101have even parity because they contain zero or two 1s.001,111and100have odd parity because they contain one or three 1s.
Quantum mechanics extends this binary classification from individual bit strings to subspaces. A state can be an eigenstate of a parity operator, in which case the operator returns the same state multiplied by either +1 or −1. Richard Feynman described the convention this way in The Feynman Lectures on Physics, Volume III, Chapter 17: if P̂|ψ⟩ = |ψ⟩, the state has even parity; if P̂|ψ⟩ = −|ψ⟩, it has odd parity.

Not every quantum state has a definite parity. A superposition can contain components from both sectors. A parity measurement then projects the state into the even or odd subspace, with probabilities determined by the amplitudes in those components.
How a parity operator produces +1 or −1
The most common computational-basis parity operator is a product of Pauli Z operators. For two qubits, the operator is Z⊗Z; for a check on the first two of three qubits, it is Z⊗Z⊗I. Here I means that the third qubit is not included in the check.
Pauli Z acts as Z|0⟩ = |0⟩ and Z|1⟩ = −|1⟩. Applying a product of Z operators therefore contributes one minus sign for every selected qubit in state |1⟩. An even number of minus signs multiplies to +1, while an odd number multiplies to −1.

What is an even-parity state?
An even-parity state is any state in the +1 eigenspace of the chosen parity operator. For Z⊗Z⊗I, IBM’s stabilizer example describes the +1 eigenvectors as linear combinations of computational-basis states whose leftmost two bits have even parity.
Examples of basis states in that even sector include |000⟩, |110⟩, |001⟩ and |111⟩, because the first two bits are respectively 00, 11, 00 and 11. A valid even-parity superposition could be written as:
|ψ_even⟩ = α|000⟩ + β|110⟩ + γ|001⟩ + δ|111⟩,

with amplitudes whose squared magnitudes sum to one. The check preserves coherence among components in this same eigenspace when it is measured as a stabilizer without otherwise learning which basis component is present.
Odd-parity states
An odd-parity state lies in the −1 eigenspace. For the same operator, basis components with first two bits 01 or 10 belong to this sector. A state such as α|010⟩ + β|100⟩ is odd under Z⊗Z⊗I, even though it remains a quantum superposition rather than a classical list of definite values.
States without definite parity
A state containing amplitudes from both sectors, such as a superposition of |000⟩ and |010⟩, is not an eigenstate of that parity operator. Measuring the operator gives +1 or −1 and projects the state into the corresponding subspace. This is analogous to measuring any observable with multiple eigenspaces: the result identifies the eigenspace, not the individual basis state inside it.
Why even and odd sectors matter for information
A direct measurement of every data qubit can reveal the complete bit string and generally destroy the encoded superposition. A collective parity measurement reveals one bit of information—the sector—while leaving uncertainty among basis states that share that sector.

If a code is designed so that valid states satisfy particular parity constraints, the computer can measure those constraints to look for errors without directly reading the logical data. The measurement may change the state according to the check outcome, but it need not expose the encoded message itself.
- Direct data readout: obtains individual computational-basis values and usually collapses the data state in that basis.
- Parity readout: obtains a collective even/odd result and preserves, in the ideal stabilizer setting, coherence within the measured sector.
- Multiple parity readouts: produce a syndrome, a pattern of check outcomes that carries more diagnostic information than one parity bit.
How stabilizers turn parity into an error check
In stabilizer quantum error correction, a code space is defined as the set of states fixed by a collection of commuting stabilizer generators. A generator containing only Z and identity operators is equivalent to a parity check: valid code states are +1 eigenstates of that operator.
Suppose a code uses two checks. Each check returns one binary result, so together they can distinguish several possible error patterns. The checks must commute so that the state can satisfy all of their constraints simultaneously. Berkeley lecture notes give the Pauli rule: two Pauli products commute when the number of positions at which they contain different nonidentity Paulis is even; they anticommute when that number is odd.

One check versus a syndrome
A single check reports only whether the selected set has even or odd parity. It cannot, by itself, tell which qubit caused an odd result. A set of commuting checks produces a syndrome—a sequence of outcomes whose pattern can identify many correctable error locations.
Recommended Free Tools
The three-bit repetition code illustrates this principle. Its checks compare neighboring encoded bits, commonly using Z-type products on the first pair and second pair. If one physical bit flips, the two check results form a distinctive pattern. The decoder uses that pattern to infer which location is inconsistent and applies a correction, while the logical information remains encoded.
How a parity check detects a bit flip
A bit flip changes a computational-basis value from 0 to 1 or from 1 to 0. Relative to a Z-type parity check, that toggles whether the selected set contains an even or odd number of 1s. Operationally, the check outcome changes sign when an odd number of relevant flips occurs.
- Prepare the encoded data. The data qubits occupy a code state that is normally a +1 eigenstate of each stabilizer.
- Couple an ancilla to the selected qubits. A coherent ancilla-mediated circuit gathers the collective parity without measuring each data qubit separately.
- Measure the ancilla. The result is interpreted as the stabilizer eigenvalue or as an equivalent binary bit.
- Record the syndrome. Compare the new result with the expected +1 value and combine it with other check outcomes.
- Decode and correct when appropriate. The syndrome pattern, not one isolated check, determines which correction is justified.
For a ZZ check, NVIDIA’s CUDA-QX documentation uses the binary convention in which 0 means no errors or an even number of errors and 1 means an odd number of errors. That convention encodes the same two physical outcomes as +1 and −1.
Why an even number of flips can be missed
Parity is deliberately insensitive to pairs. If two selected bits flip, the count of flipped positions is even, so the parity result returns to its original value. A single check can therefore miss an even-weight error pattern. This is not a malfunction; it is the mathematical limitation of reporting only the count modulo two. Additional checks, different operator supports or a code with greater distance are needed to distinguish such patterns.
How parity is measured without reading every data qubit
In a stabilizer measurement, an ancilla interacts with the data qubits so that its final state records the eigenvalue of the product operator. Measuring the ancilla then reveals the collective parity. Because the data are not individually measured in the computational basis, superpositions within one parity sector can remain coherent in the ideal circuit.
The exact gate sequence depends on the hardware and on whether the check contains X, Y or Z factors. The conceptual requirements are the same:

- The ancilla must couple to every data qubit included in the operator.
- The interactions must implement the desired Pauli product, including any basis changes needed for X or Y factors.
- The ancilla is measured after the interaction, and its result is mapped to the stabilizer eigenvalue.
- Repeated rounds may be used in practical error-correction protocols to distinguish data errors from measurement faults, although the number of rounds is code- and hardware-dependent.
Directly measuring the data and classically computing parity is simpler, but it exposes the individual values and generally destroys the encoded quantum information. Ancilla-mediated measurement trades circuit complexity for nondestructive information about the constraint.

Do X- and Y-based checks measure parity too?
Parity is not restricted to Z operators. A Z-type check tests computational-basis bit parity. Checks containing X or Y operators test a corresponding parity in another Pauli frame.
- Z products: distinguish even and odd patterns of computational-basis values.
- X products: constrain the complementary, phase-like basis associated with X eigenstates.
- Y products: combine X- and Z-related structure and require the appropriate phase convention.
The word “parity” therefore describes the two-sector structure of a Pauli product, not only a count of visible 1 bits in the standard basis. Basis changes before and after an ancilla interaction let hardware measure these other checks using the same general stabilizer technique.
Parity, reflection symmetry and quantum states
Parity also has a broader meaning in quantum mechanics: symmetry under spatial reflection. In that setting, a parity operator transforms a state according to a reflection, and eigenstates can be even or odd under that transformation. The algebra is the same: an even eigenstate is unchanged by the operator, while an odd eigenstate acquires a minus sign.
Quantum states need not possess a definite reflection parity either. A state can be decomposed into even and odd components, just as a multiqubit state can contain components from both eigenspaces of a stabilizer. Measuring parity selects one component according to the measurement probabilities.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Confusing parity with the number of qubits
Parity does not mean whether the register has an even or odd size. It refers to the number of 1s—or, more generally, the eigenvalue of a selected operator—on the qubits included in the check.
Assuming an odd result identifies one error
An odd syndrome says that an odd number of relevant error events occurred. It does not identify a unique qubit. Location information comes from comparing several checks.
Assuming +1 always means “binary 1”
In the usual stabilizer convention, +1 is even and often encoded as classical 0, while −1 is odd and often encoded as 1. The software mapping is not universal.
Believing a parity check reveals the entire state
A check supplies one collective constraint. Many different basis states and superpositions can share the same outcome.
Ignoring operator commutation
Stabilizer generators must commute if they are to define a common code space and be measured together as compatible constraints. Mixing incompatible checks without accounting for their back-action can invalidate the intended code measurement.
A practical way to read any parity-check description
- List the operator’s support. Identify exactly which qubits appear and which are represented by identity operators.
- Identify the Pauli factors. Z factors refer to computational-bit parity; X and Y factors indicate another measurement frame.
- Determine the outcome convention. Translate +1/−1 into the implementation’s 0/1 labels before interpreting a syndrome.
- Ask what information is intentionally omitted. One result gives the sector, not each qubit value.
- Check for companion generators. A complete syndrome requires several commuting checks when error location matters.
- Consider even-weight errors. If two relevant flips can produce the same result as no flip, the code needs additional checks or a higher-distance construction.
Why parity is a foundation of quantum error correction
Parity checks turn fragile quantum information into testable relationships. A valid encoded state can be required to satisfy several +1 constraints. Noise that changes one of those relationships produces a detectable −1 result, while the logical state remains unmeasured at the level of individual data qubits.
The power comes from combining three ideas: eigenspaces group many states without identifying them, commuting stabilizers allow compatible constraints, and syndrome patterns distinguish error hypotheses. Parity alone is only one bit of information, but a carefully chosen family of parity checks can provide the structure needed to detect and correct errors while preserving the encoded quantum information.
