Palantir Technologies sells enterprise software to government agencies and commercial organizations. Its platforms connect an institution’s data with analysis, decisions and operational workflows, so users can act on information inside the same software environment rather than treating analytics as a separate exercise.
The company makes money through contracts that give customers access to those platforms. Palantir generally signs agreements lasting one to five years, recognizes revenue over the contract term and serves both government and commercial customers. In 2025, it reported $4.5 billion in revenue: 54% from government customers and 46% from commercial customers.

What Palantir actually does
Palantir builds software for organizations that must combine large, complex data sets with decisions and real-world operations. A defense organization might need to connect intelligence, logistics and mission information. A manufacturer might need to link production data, inventory, maintenance and planning. In both cases, the software is intended to make data usable in a controlled operational process, not merely display it in a dashboard.

Palantir’s customers are institutions rather than ordinary consumers. The company’s 2025 Form 10-K describes the business plainly: “Our customers pay us to use the software platforms we have built.” That means Palantir is primarily a business-to-government and business-to-business software vendor. It is not mainly selling hardware, advertising or a consumer subscription app.

The platforms can be deployed in different technical environments, including cloud, on-premises infrastructure and edge settings, depending on the customer and product configuration. Product capabilities and availability can vary by contract, so the platform descriptions below explain their intended roles rather than a universal package that every customer receives.
The four principal Palantir platforms
Palantir identifies four principal platforms. They overlap as parts of a broader system, but each has a different center of gravity.

Gotham: mission and intelligence software
Gotham is associated with defense and intelligence operations. Palantir also says it has served disaster-relief organizations, illustrating that the platform’s mission focus can extend beyond military use. Its purpose is to help authorized users bring together information relevant to an operation and use it in coordinated workflows.

Government deployments are configured for particular missions, data sources, security requirements and operating environments. The public descriptions establish the platform’s intended mission role, not a guarantee of a specific outcome for every agency.
Foundry: the data-operations foundation
Foundry is Palantir’s foundational data operations platform. Its capabilities include data management, analytics, logic, Ontology development and workflow development. In practical terms, Foundry is the place where an organization can organize disparate data, define how that data relates to business objects and rules, and build processes that use the resulting information.

That combination matters because an analysis that never reaches a decision process has limited operational value. Foundry is designed to connect the preparation and interpretation of data with actions such as planning, prioritization, approvals or exception handling. The exact workflows depend on what the customer builds.
Apollo: delivering software across environments
Apollo coordinates delivery of software updates and platform configurations. Palantir designed it to operate across cloud, on-premises and other environments, which is important for customers that cannot place all of their systems in one public cloud.

It can support distributed installations where connectivity, security or location requirements differ. The company does not publish one universal deployment pattern for every customer.
AIP: connecting AI to organizational operations
AIP, the Artificial Intelligence Platform, connects large language models and other AI capabilities to an organization’s data and operational systems. Palantir describes tools for creating AI-backed workflows and agents, with controls for security, auditing, evaluation and human review.
AIP is integrated with offerings such as Foundry, Gotham and Apollo. That integration is intended to let an AI system work with governed organizational data and trigger or recommend actions inside established workflows, rather than operate as an isolated chatbot. Human review and audit features are especially relevant where an organization must understand how an AI-assisted decision was produced and who approved an action.

These are company-described capabilities. They explain what AIP is designed to provide, but they are not independent proof that every deployment delivers a particular level of accuracy, savings or productivity.

Palantir uses the term Ontology for a software architecture that brings an organization’s data, logic and actions together in a representation of how that organization operates. Instead of treating every source as an unrelated table, the Ontology can represent meaningful objects, relationships, rules and permitted actions.
For example, a customer might model assets, facilities, suppliers, work orders and employees, then define how those objects relate and what actions are allowed when conditions change. A workflow could use those relationships to identify an affected asset, check relevant rules, request approval and record the resulting action.
This is different from calling the Ontology a generic database. A database stores and retrieves information; the Ontology, as Palantir describes it, is an organizing layer that combines information with business logic and operational actions. It is also not an independently verified claim that every customer achieves a specific business result. The value depends on the quality of the data, the model of the organization and the workflows a team implements.
How a Palantir deployment connects data to action
A typical implementation can be understood as a sequence of connected activities. The exact screens and responsibilities differ by customer, but the architecture follows this logic:

- Model the organization. The customer defines important objects, relationships and business logic through the Ontology and related Foundry capabilities.
- Analyze situations. Users apply analytics, queries, rules or models to understand current conditions, identify patterns and evaluate alternatives.
- Build a workflow. The result is placed into a process for planning, prioritization, approval, investigation, dispatch or another operational activity.
- Apply AI where appropriate. AIP can connect approved language models or other AI tools to the governed data and workflow, with evaluation, audit and human-review controls.
- Deliver and maintain the software. Apollo coordinates updates and configurations across the customer’s cloud, on-premises or other installations.
This sequence helps explain why Palantir presents its products as a platform ecosystem. Data management, operational modeling, AI and software delivery are related functions rather than four unrelated applications.

Customers pay for access under contracts
Palantir’s revenue comes from customer contracts for use of its software platforms. The company generally offers contracts lasting one to five years, although shorter contracts also occur. A contract may cover a particular deployment, a set of capabilities or an expanding relationship; the public filing does not provide a universal commercial package that applies to every customer.
Palantir’s filing says, “Revenue is generally recognized ratably over the contract term.” In other words, if a customer signs a multi-year agreement, the accounting revenue is generally recorded over that period rather than all at once when the contract is signed. This accounting treatment means reported revenue reflects services delivered during the term, while bookings or contract value can concern future periods.
Termination provisions affect contract risk
Many customer contracts contain termination-for-convenience provisions. Such a clause can allow a customer to end an agreement under specified contractual conditions without alleging a breach. The existence of these provisions is a commercial risk factor: a signed multi-year contract is not automatically a guarantee that all expected future revenue will be collected.

There is no public standard list price
The reviewed company filings and product materials do not establish a fixed per-seat or per-platform public price. Pricing can depend on scope, deployment environment, data and security requirements, users, support and contract terms. It would therefore be misleading to quote a universal “Palantir price” or assume that Gotham, Foundry, Apollo and AIP are each purchased at a standard rate.
The filing also does not provide a complete platform-by-platform revenue breakdown. Public revenue figures describe the company and its customer segments, not the amount generated by each individual product.
Palantir’s reported 2025 business in numbers
The following figures come from Palantir Technologies’ 2025 Form 10-K and describe the stated periods. They are historical company-reported results, not forecasts.

The mix shows a business with meaningful exposure to both public-sector and commercial spending. It also shows that the United States is the largest geographic market in the reported year. The top-customer figure indicates that large accounts matter to revenue, although it does not by itself predict renewals or future growth.

Government work
Government customers may use Palantir software for defense, intelligence, emergency response or other mission-oriented work. Their projects can involve stringent security controls, specialized infrastructure and data that cannot be moved freely between environments. Gotham’s mission focus and Apollo’s ability to operate across environments are particularly relevant to this context.
Commercial work
Commercial customers can apply Foundry and related capabilities to areas such as operations, supply chains, manufacturing, planning or other organizational processes. AIP can add AI-assisted workflows where the customer has approved models, data access and review procedures.
These examples describe use contexts, not a promise that every customer uses every platform. Palantir reports government and commercial revenue as customer segments, but it does not publish a complete product-level split that would show how much of each platform is used in each segment.
What Palantir is—and is not—selling
- It is selling software access and related platform capabilities, not a mass-market hardware product.
- It is selling an operational software architecture, where data, logic, workflows and actions can be connected.
- It is not publishing a simple universal price list for seats or individual platforms.
- It is not reporting revenue as a one-time product sale in most cases; revenue is generally recognized over the contract term.
- It is not claiming that product descriptions alone prove customer outcomes. Results depend on implementation, data quality, governance and the customer’s operating processes.
Why the business model matters to readers evaluating Palantir
Understanding the contract model prevents two common mistakes. First, Palantir’s headline revenue is not the same thing as cash from newly signed contracts in that year; multi-year agreements are generally recognized as service is delivered. Second, the four platform names should not be treated as four transparent, independently priced products. They are components of a broader software system whose scope is negotiated with institutional customers.
The most useful way to compare the offerings is by purpose and operating context: Gotham for mission and intelligence work, Foundry for data operations and workflows, Apollo for delivery across infrastructure, and AIP for governed AI connected to organizational operations. The Ontology is the architectural layer that helps relate data, logic and actions. Together, these elements explain both what Palantir does and why its customers buy contracts rather than a conventional off-the-shelf application.
