A rebuild is not automatically identical to the original release. Identical, byte-for-byte output is the stricter goal called a reproducible build.
What does it mean to rebuild software from source code?
Software source code is an input, not the finished program. A compiler, interpreter, linker, packager, and other build tools transform that input into artifacts such as executables, libraries, container images, firmware files, or installable packages. Rebuilding means performing that transformation again.

The phrase describes an action, not a guarantee about the result. If you compile the same project twice, the outputs may differ because the source revision, build rules, dependencies, machine, file paths, timestamps, or other inputs changed. Both runs can be valid rebuilds even when their files are not identical.
A reproducible build adds a defined requirement: when the same source and specified build environment are used, the resulting artifacts should be identical byte for byte. That stronger property lets another party compare its independently produced file with a published binary and determine whether the checked inputs lead to the same output.

Rebuild and reproducible build are different claims
| Question | Ordinary rebuild | Reproducible build |
|---|---|---|
| What happens? | The build process is run again. | The build process is run again under defined, controlled inputs. |
| Must the output match the earlier artifact? | No. A different but functional artifact may be produced. | Yes, the goal is byte-for-byte identity for the specified inputs. |
| What must be identified? | At minimum, the source and a way to build it. | The exact source, build rules, dependencies, toolchain, platform, and other relevant environment details. |
| What does a mismatch mean? | Only that the two artifacts differ; the cause is not established. | It signals that an input or nondeterministic behavior needs investigation. |
| What can it support? | A new build for development, testing, packaging, or maintenance. | Evidence that an artifact can be recreated from the specified inputs. |
These terms should not be used interchangeably. Saying “the release was rebuilt” does not establish that the release was reproduced exactly.
What inputs are required?
Source files alone are often insufficient. A realistic rebuild needs the complete set of inputs that the project’s build process expects.
Source revision
Record the exact commit, tag, release archive, or source-package version. “The latest source” is not a reproducible identifier because it can change after the first build. A source package may also contain distribution-specific patches, build scripts, metadata, and configuration that are not present in an upstream repository checkout.

Build instructions and rules
Build files specify how source becomes an artifact: which targets to compile, which flags to use, how files are generated, and how outputs are assembled into a package. Examples include makefiles, project manifests, package recipes, container definitions, and release scripts. The instructions are part of the recipe and must be identified along with the source.
Compiler, tools, and dependencies
The compiler or interpreter version, linker, assembler, code generators, packaging utilities, and build-time libraries can all affect output. Pinning only the application’s runtime dependencies is not enough when the build itself depends on a particular toolchain. A dependency update can change generated code, symbol ordering, metadata, or default compiler behavior.
Platform and architecture
Record the operating-system and toolchain versions, target architecture, and relevant platform settings. A build for one CPU architecture is not necessarily equivalent to a build for another. Debian’s reproducibility guidance treats the build architecture as part of the defined environment.

Build-directory path and machine details
The path in which a project is built can leak into debug information or generated files. Debian specifically identifies the build-directory path as an environment detail that may need to be fixed. Hostname, current username, kernel information, CPU features, and available parallelism can also affect output when build scripts capture them.

How to rebuild software step by step
- Identify the exact source. Obtain the release tag, commit, or source package that corresponds to the artifact you want to examine. Save its cryptographic digest when one is published.
- Read the project’s build instructions. Determine the required target, configuration switches, generated files, packaging steps, and expected output names. Do not assume that a generic compiler command recreates the official release.
- Capture the build environment. Record the operating system, architecture, compiler and tool versions, package dependencies, environment variables, build path, locale, timezone, and any container or virtual-machine image used.
- Install the required inputs. Use the versions specified by the project or package recipe. If dependencies are fetched during the build, lock their versions and retain the exact archives or repositories used.
- Build in a clean workspace. Start from a fresh checkout or source extraction, use the documented configuration, and avoid accidentally reusing generated files from an earlier run.
- Produce and identify the artifacts. Save executables, libraries, archives, package files, and relevant logs. Record checksums and the command or pipeline that created each output.
- Compare when comparison is the goal. Compare the new artifact with the published file or with an independent builder’s result. A byte-for-byte match is stronger evidence than a comparison that merely shows the program runs.
This procedure can create a useful development or maintenance build even when exact reproduction is not possible. For a reproducible build, the same defined inputs must be retained and uncontrolled variation must be removed or made deterministic.
Why can a rebuild produce different bytes?
Differences are common because build tools may incorporate information that is not visible in the source code. Debian’s reproducibility documentation identifies several recurring causes.

| Variable | How it can affect an artifact | What to control |
|---|---|---|
| Build time | Timestamps can enter archives, generated files, version metadata, or debug records. | Use a defined build time or a project-supported timestamp-normalization method. |
| Filesystem ordering | Directory traversal order can change the order of files in an archive or the order in which inputs are processed. | Use deterministic sorting rather than relying on the filesystem’s enumeration order. |
| Current user | Usernames or home-directory paths may be embedded in diagnostics, metadata, or generated code. | Build with a fixed identity and remove unnecessary identity-dependent data. |
| Hostname and host information | Scripts may record the machine name or system properties in a binary or package. | Use a controlled hostname and inspect scripts for host-derived values. |
uname output |
Kernel or platform information can influence conditional compilation or generated metadata. | Use a defined platform and avoid recording incidental host details. |
| Pseudorandomness | Random identifiers, generated keys, temporary names, or randomized ordering can change output each run. | Provide a controlled seed where supported or use deterministic generation. |
| CPU features or load | Feature detection, parallel scheduling, or optimized code paths can select different instructions or ordering. | Fix the target CPU and relevant feature flags; avoid output that depends on scheduling. |
A changed checksum is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis. It does not by itself prove that the source was altered or that an attack occurred. It shows that at least one input, tool behavior, or nondeterministic operation produced a different result.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to investigate a mismatch
- Confirm that the comparison is meaningful. Check that both files represent the same target, configuration, architecture, packaging format, and source revision. Comparing a locally built debug binary with an optimized release binary will not answer a reproducibility question.
- Compare the recorded environment. Check compiler, linker, package, operating-system, architecture, locale, timezone, build path, username, hostname, and environment variables. A missing record often explains why two supposedly identical builds are not actually equivalent.
- Inspect metadata before disassembling code. Archive member order, embedded timestamps, absolute paths, debug information, generated version strings, and package control fields are frequent sources of differences.
- Run two builds in the same controlled environment. If the output changes between consecutive runs with identical inputs, the build is nondeterministic. If it is stable locally but differs from another builder, compare the environments and tool versions.
- Reduce the difference. Compare unpacked files, generated intermediates, or sections of the artifact to locate the first stage where outputs diverge. Then inspect the build rule responsible for that stage.
- Document the explanation. A reproducibility result is more useful when it states which input was fixed or changed and why the bytes now match or differ.
Matching output is meaningful only when the compared builds truly use the same defined inputs. A superficial checksum comparison without that context can create false confidence.

Independent rebuilding can provide evidence about an artifact’s origin. If an independent party obtains the stated source and build inputs and produces the same binary as the published release, that supports the claim that the release corresponds to those inputs rather than to an undisclosed change made on a build server.
Best Value
Debian presents reproducible packages as a way for independent parties to check whether binaries match the expected results from source. This can reduce the opportunity for a compromised developer account or build process to introduce a change that remains hidden in the distributed binary.
Build provenance adds related information: an attestation can describe which build platform produced an artifact from which build definition. The SLSA specification treats provenance as information consumers can use to check whether a process matches expectations and to help others reproduce it.
What a match can support
- The checked artifact can be recreated from the specified source and environment.
- The published binary is consistent with the build process that was independently run.
- Some classes of unauthorized build-server modification become easier to detect.
What a match cannot prove
- That the source code is benign or free of intentional vulnerabilities.
- That every dependency, compiler, signing key, or build tool is trustworthy.
- That the verifier’s own machine and tools are uncompromised.
- That an artifact built from different inputs has the same properties.
Reproducibility is therefore one verification measure, not a complete safety certification. Provenance describes how an artifact was produced; it does not guarantee that the resulting software is safe.
Does one reproducible package mean an entire distribution is reproducible?
No. Reproducibility can be evaluated at different scopes. A single package may reproduce byte for byte under a fixed path and environment while other packages in the same distribution still vary.
Debian’s project status page states that reproducibility across Debian as a whole is not yet a reality, while noting that many packages can be reproducible when the build path and environment are fixed. This distinction matters: success for one package is evidence about that package and its specified inputs, not a blanket statement about every package or every release in the distribution.
Practical checklist for a defensible rebuild
- Exact source commit, tag, or source-package version recorded.
- Build rules, patches, configuration switches, and generated-input steps retained.
- Compiler, linker, interpreter, packaging-tool, and build-dependency versions recorded.
- Target architecture and operating-system details recorded.
- Build path, locale, timezone, username, hostname, and relevant environment variables controlled.
- Network-fetched inputs pinned, checksummed, and retained where possible.
- Clean workspace used for each run.
- Artifact checksums and build logs saved.
- Independent comparison performed with matching target and configuration.
- Any mismatch explained rather than treated as proof of compromise.
Following this checklist turns “I compiled it again” into a build that another person can examine and, where the project supports it, reproduce.
