What Does It Mean to Program with AI, and What Skills Do Developers Still Need?

Programming with AI means using a generative coding assistant or agent as part of normal software development—not handing the whole job to a machine. The tool may draft functions, explain unfamiliar code, propose tests, or make coordinated edits, but a developer still defines the requirement, supplies context, evaluates the change, and verifies that it works safely in the actual codebase.

Use is already widespread: 65.9% of 17,464 respondents to the Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2026 said they used AI coding assistants or coding agents in their work role. That figure describes survey respondents, not every developer, and it combines several kinds of tools and workflows. The practical question is therefore not whether AI replaces programming, but which parts of engineering it can assist and which kinds of judgment remain human responsibilities.

What “programming with AI” actually includes

There is no single AI-programming workflow. The phrase covers a range of activities in which a developer asks a model to generate, transform, explain, or inspect software artifacts.

Assistants that respond to a developer

An assistant can complete code in an editor, turn a plain-language description into a draft, explain an error message, suggest a refactor, write a first test, or summarize a file. The developer chooses what to ask for and decides whether to accept, edit, or reject the suggestion. The model may see the current file, selected code, or additional project context, depending on the tool’s configuration.

Agents that carry out multi-step tasks

An agent is given a larger goal and may inspect files, plan a sequence of edits, invoke development tools, and return a set of changes. “Agent” does not mean autonomous ownership of the project. Its permissions, available context, and ability to run commands are bounded by the environment, while a person remains accountable for the resulting software.

AI as a learning and analysis aid

Programming with AI also includes asking for a concept explanation, comparing two APIs, translating code between languages, generating examples, or locating likely causes of a failure. These uses can support learning without making the model the author of every line. GitHub’s official guidance for learning with Copilot recommends treating it as a companion rather than a substitute for understanding. It states: “This will give you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of programming concepts by writing more code yourself.”

The human work that does not disappear

Framing the requirement

A model cannot reliably infer an unstated product rule, legal constraint, operational limit, or compatibility promise. A developer must turn a request such as “add sign-in” into explicit behavior: which identity provider is allowed, what happens on failure, how sessions expire, which data is stored, and what must remain backward-compatible. Precise requirements give an AI tool something testable to implement.

Understanding the surrounding system

Generated code is only useful when it fits the repository around it. Developers need to know the project’s language and framework versions, module boundaries, data model, error-handling conventions, deployment target, and existing tests. Survey respondents report comparing AI output with their codebase, which is a reminder that context is part of the task rather than an optional polish step.

Reading and modifying code

You need enough programming knowledge to follow control flow, identify state changes, understand interfaces, and recognize an inappropriate abstraction. If you cannot explain what a generated function does, you cannot confidently maintain it when requirements change or an incident occurs. AI can accelerate a draft, but code reading remains the basis for ownership.

Testing, security, and operational judgment

A plausible answer can still contain a race condition, authorization error, injection flaw, inefficient query, or dependency incompatibility. Developers choose meaningful tests, inspect security-sensitive paths, and decide whether a change is safe to deploy. They also know when an apparently minor edit needs a migration, feature flag, performance check, or human review from a specialist.

Debugging and deciding when to stop

When generated code fails, someone must reduce the problem, form hypotheses, inspect evidence, and choose the next experiment. A model can suggest possibilities, but it does not own the production consequences of chasing the wrong one. Experienced developers also recognize when a request is underspecified or when a simpler non-AI solution is better.

What developers report doing to validate AI output

The Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2026 asked respondents about their validation practices. The percentages below are reported behaviors, not a test of how effective each practice is, and respondents could select more than one option.

Validation practice Share of respondents What it means in practice
Run the output locally 76% Execute the code in a development environment and observe its behavior.
Compare it with the codebase 64% Check conventions, interfaces, dependencies, and neighboring implementations.
Check tests or security 53% Use automated tests, security checks, or both to look for failures and vulnerabilities.

Because these groups overlap, the figures should not be added together. They show that verification is part of many respondents’ workflows; they do not prove that every generated change was correct.

The skills to build or keep developing

Core programming concepts

  • Data structures, control flow, functions, modules, and error handling.
  • State, concurrency, I/O, networking, and the runtime model of your language.
  • Interfaces, types, dependency management, and version compatibility.
  • Database design, transactions, queries, and common performance trade-offs.

These foundations let you detect a confident-sounding but incorrect explanation and make targeted corrections instead of repeatedly regenerating code.

Requirements and system design

Write acceptance criteria, identify edge cases, map dependencies, and decide where a change belongs before asking for implementation. For a multi-file task, describe the desired behavior and constraints first, then ask the tool to inspect relevant files or propose a plan. Review the plan before allowing broad edits.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Testing and verification

Know how to run the project’s formatter, linter, unit tests, integration tests, and type checker. Add tests for normal behavior, boundary values, failure paths, permissions, and data validation. Treat a passing test suite as evidence for covered behavior, not proof that untested requirements are correct.

Security and privacy

Recognize authorization boundaries, secret-handling mistakes, unsafe deserialization, injection risks, insecure defaults, and excessive logging. Do not paste credentials, private keys, customer data, or proprietary source into a service unless your organization’s policy and the tool’s data controls explicitly permit it.

Version-control and review discipline

Keep AI-generated work in small, understandable commits. Read the complete diff, not only the lines the tool highlights. A reviewer should be able to see what requirement each change addresses and what evidence supports it. Revert or rewrite code that is difficult to explain, even when it appears to work.

Communication

Clear issue descriptions, precise prompts, useful comments, and concise pull-request notes improve both human collaboration and model output. Prompt writing helps, but it is not a replacement for engineering judgment: a beautifully worded request can still encode the wrong requirement.

How to use AI safely in a real development task

  1. Define the outcome. State the user-visible behavior, constraints, supported versions, and failure conditions. Include acceptance criteria that can be tested.
  2. Inspect the repository first. Identify the relevant modules, existing patterns, configuration, and tests. Give the assistant only the context it needs and avoid exposing secrets.
  3. Ask for a plan before a large edit. Have the tool list files it would change, assumptions it is making, and tests it intends to add or run. Correct the plan while it is still cheap to change.
  4. Make a narrow change. Prefer one cohesive task over an unrestricted “improve the project” request. Smaller diffs are easier to review and roll back.
  5. Read every proposed change. Check names, types, error paths, authorization, performance, and consistency with local conventions. Ask the tool to explain unfamiliar code, but verify the explanation against the source.
  6. Run automated checks locally. Use the repository’s normal build, formatter, linter, type checker, and tests. Add a regression test for the bug or requirement that motivated the change.
  7. Exercise behavior beyond the happy path. Try invalid input, missing permissions, empty data, retries, timeouts, concurrent requests, and upgrade or rollback scenarios where relevant.
  8. Review the final diff and commit deliberately. Remove unnecessary generated code, record any remaining limitations, and request human review for security-, data-, or infrastructure-sensitive changes.

Learning to program with AI without weakening your fundamentals

The survey’s learning answers show that developers combine several sources. For learning AI programming, respondents selected AI code-generation tools or AI-enabled apps at 50.6%, other online resources at 45.0%, technical documentation at 42.5%, and books or physical media at 7.7% (Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2026, n = 20,565). This was a multi-select question, so the percentages represent overlapping routes rather than a ranking.

For learning to code generally, technical documentation led at 58.9%, followed by AI code-generation tools or AI-enabled apps at 52.6% and other online resources at 51.7% (n = 14,530). The contrast suggests that documentation and conventional learning resources remain important even as AI tools become common.

A productive practice loop

  • Attempt a small feature or exercise yourself before requesting a complete solution.
  • Ask for an explanation of a concept or trade-off, then implement a version in your own words.
  • Use AI to critique your code, generate edge cases, or suggest tests rather than automatically replacing your first draft.
  • Check claims against the language, framework, or service’s current documentation.
  • Keep a record of mistakes the tool made so you can recognize similar patterns later.

This approach preserves the ability to reason without assistance while still using AI for feedback and exploration.

What the productivity evidence does—and does not—show

It is tempting to turn widespread use into a promise of universal speed. The available evidence does not support that conclusion. In METR’s early-2025 study, experienced open-source developers working on tasks in repositories they knew estimated after the study that allowing AI would reduce completion time by 20%. That number is a participant expectation, not the study’s measured productivity result. The study separately examined task-completion outcomes, and its setting—experienced contributors, familiar repositories, and early-2025 tools—does not represent every developer or project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A careful conclusion is narrower: AI assistance is common, and its value depends on the task, the developer’s experience, the tool’s access to relevant context, and the quality of verification. A short, well-specified boilerplate task may benefit from a quick draft; an unfamiliar system or security-sensitive change may require more review than writing the code manually.

A framework for comparing AI coding workflows

When choosing how to use an assistant or agent, compare the workflow rather than assuming one product category is automatically superior.

Question Why it matters
What task is being assisted? Completion, explanation, refactoring, testing, debugging, and design have different failure modes.
How much project context is available? Relevant interfaces and conventions reduce incompatible suggestions; excess or sensitive context creates other risks.
Can you inspect proposed changes? Reviewable diffs and controllable permissions make errors easier to detect and reverse.
Which checks can run locally? Tests, type checks, linters, security scanners, and realistic fixtures provide evidence before deployment.
Is the goal learning or delivery? For learning, explanations and guided practice may be more valuable than a finished answer; for delivery, repeatable review and rollback matter most.

These are decision criteria, not a ranking of named tools. The Stack Overflow survey identifies broad assistant and agent use, but it does not establish that one workflow wins on every axis.

Does AI change which developers are valuable?

It changes the distribution of effort more reliably than it defines a new universal job description. Drafting repetitive code may take less attention, while requirements analysis, architecture, integration, debugging, security, testing, and review remain central. Developers who can connect a business need to a maintainable system—and demonstrate that the system behaves correctly—retain the skills needed to direct AI productively.

Long-term employment effects, the future value of every individual skill, and an ideal amount of AI use are not settled by the cited survey or study. Treat forecasts about those questions as forecasts, not established outcomes.

Optional books and reference material

If you prefer a physical guide, Coding with AI by Jeremy Morgan was published by Manning in October 2025 and is described by its publisher as a practical guide for working developers, including AI-assisted coding topics. Rheinwerk also lists the 2025 paperback AI-Assisted Coding: The Practical Guide for Software Development. Publication pages establish that these books exist; current prices, stock, and retailer terms can change, and no hands-on evaluation is implied here. Books are one optional route among documentation, practice, colleagues, and online resources—not a universally best method.
