There is no responsible single price. Restoring a 1970s classic can mean making a sound driver roadworthy, rebuilding its mechanical systems, repairing serious rust, or creating a frame-off show car. Those are different projects with radically different labor, parts and storage requirements.
Set two budgets before buying: a one-time restoration budget and a recurring ownership budget. Your make and model, hidden corrosion, previous repairs, parts supply, local specialist rates, annual mileage, storage and the work you can competently do yourself determine the result.

Define the project before pricing it
The first cost mistake is asking for a restoration price before defining the finished car. Write down how you intend to use it, the standard you expect and the systems that must be repaired. A written scope should address the body and frame, engine, transmission, brakes, electrical system and interior.

Changing the target midway is expensive. A tidy driver does not need the same paint preparation, plating, upholstery or originality work as a judged show car. Decide whether mechanical reliability, appearance, originality or maximum resale value is the priority, then ask shops to quote that exact outcome.

Labor is usually the largest variable
Hagerty reported on 22 April 2022 that average mechanic labor charges were “upwards of $70 per hour,” while specialist services cost more. That is a dated, broad reference—not a current national price or a complete-restoration quote. Rates vary by state, country, shop equipment and the technician’s experience. A current specialist may charge substantially more.
Hagerty also notes that every part of a restoration can take hours, often hundreds of hours, of manual labor. Use the following arithmetic only to understand scale; it is not a prediction for your car and excludes parts, tax, machining, paint materials, transport and storage.

Ask for a written estimate that separates estimated hours, hourly rate, parts, subcontracted work, shop supplies, tax, storage and warranty terms. Require the shop to explain what happens when rust, missing trim or an incorrectly repaired area is discovered. An hourly estimate with no authorization threshold can expand without warning.

A professional, model-aware inspection is cheaper than discovering structural damage after the car is dismantled. Hagerty UK emphasizes that filler and paint can conceal rust, especially in sills, floors and suspension-mounting areas. Its advice is UK-focused, but the inspection principles apply anywhere.

Structural and body checks
- Put the car on a lift and inspect the frame, floor pans, sills, inner fenders, wheel arches and suspension pickup points.
- Look for fresh underseal, uneven panel gaps, ripples, mismatched paint and welds that indicate earlier repairs.
- Check drain holes, seams and the underside rather than relying on a clean exterior.
- Identify model-specific weak points using a guide for the exact make and model.
Mechanical checks
- Document cold-start behavior, oil pressure, smoke, overheating, leaks and unusual noises.
- Test the transmission, clutch, differential, steering and suspension under load.
- Measure brake condition and inspect hard lines, hoses, wheel cylinders or calipers.
- Check charging output, wiring modifications, fuse panels, lights, gauges and safety equipment.
Completeness checks
Missing trim, badges, glass, seats and model-specific interior pieces can cost more than a generic mechanical part because replacements may be scarce. Record whether the engine, transmission, interior and brightwork are original, interchangeable or absent. A cheap incomplete car can become more expensive than a sound, documented example.
Parts availability changes the budget
Popular models with broad aftermarket support are generally easier to source than rare imports or specialized variants. “Available” does not mean inexpensive: reproduction panels may require fitting, used parts may need rebuilding, and a supposedly correct component may not fit a particular year or trim level.
Possible sources include new reproduction parts, salvage yards, parts cars, marque clubs, owner forums and specialist dismantlers. Confirm part numbers, dimensions, left- or right-hand configuration and condition before paying. Buy for the work stage underway instead of purchasing an entire project inventory at once; this reduces duplicate purchases, storage problems and buying parts that the final scope makes unnecessary.
Keep invoices and photographs with the project record. They help a technician understand what was installed, reveal warranty coverage and give a future buyer evidence of the work.

Rust and previous repairs create the biggest surprises
Surface rust is not the same financial problem as corrosion in a structural sill, floor or suspension mount. Removing paint can reveal thin metal, layered patches or damage that extends well beyond the visible spot. Bodywork may therefore expand from a small repair into cutting, fabrication, alignment, corrosion protection and repainting an entire panel or section.
Do not approve cosmetic work until the metal is sound. Painting over filler or untreated corrosion can create a short-lived result and force you to pay for preparation twice. Ask the shop how it will document hidden areas, what metal thickness and welding standard it will use, and whether rustproofing is included after repair.
DIY can reduce paid hours, but not risk
Owner labor can reduce the number of billed hours, but the available guidance does not quantify a universal saving. The real calculation includes your experience, tools, workspace, time and the cost of correcting mistakes. A failed paint job, damaged wiring harness or incorrectly assembled brake system can erase the apparent saving.

Build a restoration estimate that can survive discoveries
- Define the finished use. State whether the car is for occasional local driving, touring, daily use or display, and set a finish target such as roadworthy driver, tidy driver or show standard.
- Commission an inspection. Include a lift inspection, compression or leak-down testing where appropriate, electrical checks and a review of model-specific rust points.
- Create a system-by-system work list. Separate body and frame, engine, transmission, brakes, suspension, steering, electrical, cooling, fuel, exhaust, glass, trim and interior.
- Get itemized estimates. Ask for hours, rates, parts numbers, subcontractors, consumables, taxes, storage and warranty terms.
- Set an approval process. Require photographs and written approval before work outside the agreed scope begins.
- Reserve a contingency. The amount depends on inspection findings and the car’s completeness; do not treat a low initial quote as a fixed total.
Compare the purchase price plus the likely restoration expense with the realistic value of a finished example. A car that needs a lower purchase price but extensive structural work may be the costliest choice.

Finishing the restoration does not eliminate ownership costs. Published ownership guidance does not establish a trustworthy annual dollar figure for an unspecified 1970s classic, driver, mileage pattern and location. Any universal number would conceal major differences in use and condition.
Build your recurring budget only after specifying:
- Exact make, model, engine, transmission and production year
- Expected annual mileage and frequency of short trips
- Climate and location, including corrosion exposure
- Indoor, outdoor or rented storage and whether the car is seasonal
- Work you can perform safely and tools already owned
- Whether insurance, fuel, registration, inspection fees and storage rent are included

Hagerty gives timing-belt service on Porsche 944s and some Ferraris as examples of costly model-specific interval work. Those examples are not 1970s-specific prices or a claim that every classic needs a belt service. Obtain the exact schedule for your engine and record the date, mileage and parts used.
Seasonal storage
For a car that sits for months, decide how you will maintain the battery: remove it or use a suitable battery tender. Use fuel stabilizer when recommended for the storage period, follow the product directions and keep the tank and fuel system appropriate for the vehicle. Protect the car from moisture, rodents and condensation, and inspect tires, brakes and leaks before returning to the road.

How to compare two cars or two shop quotes
Use the same questions for every candidate so a low purchase price or low hourly rate does not hide a larger project.

Will a restoration pay for itself?
Usually, you should not assume it will. Hagerty says recovering the full restoration cost is unlikely except for unusually rare or high-value cars. Labor, storage, transport, parts research and correction of earlier work are often not reflected in the market value of an ordinary finished car.
Estimate financial exposure honestly, but include enjoyment as a legitimate reason to proceed. A car that is mechanically dependable and used regularly may deliver more value to its owner than a higher-value show car that spends most of its life stored. If resale matters, preserve receipts, photographs, date-coded parts information and a clear description of repairs; documentation cannot guarantee a return, but it makes the work understandable.

Buy only after an inspection identifies the structure, confirms that essential parts exist and produces a written first-stage estimate. Proceed when the car’s intended use justifies the combined purchase, restoration and ownership budgets, and when you have a credible plan for specialist work. Walk away when structural corrosion, missing major components or an undefined scope makes the total exposure unknowable.
The most useful answer to “What will I spend on parts and labor?” is therefore a model-specific work list, a documented inspection and a shop estimate that separates known work from discoveries. Treat the 2022 $70-plus labor figure as historical context, not a promise of today’s price, and keep recurring maintenance, storage and compliance costs in a separate account.
