iCloud+ is Apple’s paid iCloud subscription. It raises your storage above the free 5GB and adds privacy, email, event-planning and smart-home camera features. In the United States, plans cost $0.99 to $59.99 per month, depending on capacity.
It is worth paying for when your iPhone, iPad or Mac needs more than 5GB, when you will use a feature such as Hide My Email or Private Relay, or when several people can share one family plan. It is poor value if 5GB is enough, you do not want a recurring charge, and none of the extras matters to you.

What iCloud+ is
iCloud+ is the subscription tier for Apple’s iCloud service. The free tier includes 5GB of iCloud storage; iCloud+ adds a larger storage allowance and a bundle of additional services. Apple describes the subscription and its current features on its iCloud product page and in its iCloud+ plans and pricing guide.

The storage is used by Apple services such as device backups, iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive files. If those items together exceed 5GB, you may see storage warnings or be unable to complete new backups until you free space or increase the allowance.

Apple’s paid tiers are monthly subscriptions. Prices and feature availability can differ by country or region, so the US figures below should not be treated as worldwide prices.
iCloud+ plans and US prices
Apple’s US pricing page, accessed in October 2026, lists five paid capacities. The figures are monthly prices, not one-time payments.

The camera limits come from Apple’s current plan documentation; the “best fit” descriptions are practical guidance rather than Apple’s promises. Check Apple’s regional pricing page before subscribing because local currency, taxes and available features may differ.

More iCloud storage
Every paid level increases the allowance from the free 5GB to at least 50GB. Storage is shared across the iCloud services connected to your Apple Account, so a plan does not reserve a separate quota for photos, backups or files. The right capacity depends on your current usage and how quickly your library is growing.
iCloud Private Relay
Private Relay is designed to protect Safari browsing and unencrypted internet traffic. Apple’s terms say the traffic is encrypted and sent through at least two internet relays, helping prevent one party from seeing both who you are and which sites you visit. It is not described in Apple’s materials as a full-device VPN.

There are practical limits. Availability varies by region, and some websites may behave unexpectedly or ask for additional sign-in steps. Apple also says Private Relay can affect an internet provider’s ability to exempt that traffic from a usage cap. If a site stops working normally, temporarily turning the feature off for that network may be necessary. Apple documents the technical and service limitations in its iCloud Terms and Conditions.
Hide My Email
Hide My Email creates unique, random email addresses that forward to your personal inbox. You can use a different address when signing up for a service, then disable that address if unwanted messages start arriving. Your main address remains undisclosed to the recipient. This is most useful for newsletters, trials and unfamiliar websites where you want a simple way to stop future mail.

A subscriber can use a domain they own with iCloud Mail. This allows an address such as [email protected] instead of an Apple-provided address, provided the domain and mail setup meet Apple’s requirements. It is aimed at people who already own a domain for personal or family email rather than users seeking to buy a domain through iCloud.
Apple Invites
Apple lists access to event creation and management in Apple Invites as an iCloud+ feature. It can be useful when you regularly organize gatherings and want invitations managed within Apple’s services. The value is limited if you rarely create events or already use another invitation system.
HomeKit Secure Video
HomeKit Secure Video records and displays footage from compatible cameras in Apple’s Home app. The plan alone is not enough: you need a camera that supports HomeKit Secure Video and supported home-hub hardware. A generic “smart” or “HomeKit” label does not necessarily mean the camera supports Secure Video recording.

Apple’s camera allowance is one camera on 50GB, up to five on 200GB, and unlimited cameras on 2TB, 6TB or 12TB. “Unlimited” refers to the plan allowance; it does not remove the need for compatible equipment, a suitable home network and Apple’s supported home-hub requirements. Apple’s current feature and compatibility details are listed on its iCloud page.

Sharing iCloud+ with family
Any iCloud+ plan can be shared with up to five other people in an Apple Family Sharing group. Everyone uses the shared storage pool, while Apple says each person’s files and information remain separate and private. Family members do not automatically gain access to one another’s photos, backups, messages or documents.
Sharing changes the value calculation substantially. A 200GB or 2TB plan may replace several separate subscriptions when multiple household members need more than 5GB. Before choosing a tier, add the current usage of the people who will join and leave room for future photos and backups. A plan that is adequate for one person can fill quickly when several devices are added.
How to decide whether it is worth paying
Pay when the free 5GB no longer works
Storage pressure is the clearest reason to subscribe. Check the iCloud storage breakdown on your Apple devices and identify whether backups, photos, messages or files are responsible. If you regularly delete important content just to complete a backup, the 50GB tier may solve the immediate problem. If your library is already close to 50GB, moving directly to 200GB can avoid another near-term upgrade.
Pay for a feature you will actually use
Some people would subscribe even with modest storage because Hide My Email, Private Relay, a custom mail domain or Apple Invites fits their daily routine. HomeKit Secure Video can also justify a plan for a household that already owns compatible cameras and a supported home hub. Do not count a feature as value merely because it is listed; it matters only if you will use it.

Pay when a family can share one plan
Family Sharing lets up to six people in total use one iCloud+ subscription. Compare the shared capacity with the group’s combined usage rather than evaluating the price against one person’s needs. Personal data remains separate, but the storage limit is shared, so one member’s growing photo library can consume space needed by everyone else.
Consider Apple One overlap
Apple says every Apple One plan includes iCloud+. A separate iCloud+ subscription can also be combined with Apple One when the included storage is insufficient. If you already pay for Apple One, first check how much iCloud storage it supplies and whether your household uses the other bundled services. Buying a second plan solely for storage may be unnecessary; adding a separate tier can make sense when the bundle’s allowance is too small.
Do not subscribe when 5GB is enough
If your backups, photos and files fit comfortably within 5GB, you do not need any of the additional features, and you prefer to avoid recurring bills, the free tier is the better value. You can also reduce usage by removing obsolete backups or moving files elsewhere, although that may trade convenience for manual management.

Use your present storage figure as the starting point, then account for growth over the next year. The following framework avoids choosing solely by price:

It is the lowest-cost way to unlock the iCloud+ features.
- 200GB: Choose it when several Apple devices or family members share storage, or when one person’s photo library is approaching 50GB. It also raises the HomeKit Secure Video allowance to five cameras.
- 2TB: Choose it when a family needs substantial headroom, when many devices are backed up, or when HomeKit Secure Video is used with more than five cameras. Apple lists unlimited cameras at this level.
- 6TB and 12TB: Choose these only when your household can document a need for very large storage. Both include unlimited HomeKit Secure Video cameras, so the decision is primarily about capacity rather than additional feature types.
There is no separate paid tier that removes the need to manage storage. Large video libraries, duplicate files and old device backups can still consume the allowance faster than expected.

Important limits and caveats
Prices and availability are regional
The prices in the table are Apple’s displayed US prices at the time of writing. Apple’s regional pages can show different currencies, amounts and feature availability. Confirm the offer shown for your Apple Account’s country or region before purchasing.
Private Relay is not universally available
Regional restrictions, website compatibility and data-cap behavior can affect Private Relay. Treat it as an Apple privacy feature for supported Safari traffic, not as a guarantee that every app, website or network will work identically with it enabled.
HomeKit Secure Video requires specific hardware
The camera count is useful only if your cameras support HomeKit Secure Video and you have supported home-hub hardware. Buying a higher storage tier does not make an incompatible camera work with Apple’s recording service.
Cancellation changes access
Apple says canceling iCloud+ removes access to the additional storage and iCloud+ features. Apple’s available support material does not establish a single, detailed retention outcome for every file that exceeds the free allowance after cancellation. Before canceling, review Apple’s current instructions and make sure you have enough free space, an export or another backup for anything important. A practical value test
- Measure demand: note your current iCloud usage and identify which category is growing fastest.
- Count people and devices: include every Family Sharing member and Apple device that will use the pool.
- List features you would use: mark Private Relay, Hide My Email, Custom Email Domain, Apple Invites and HomeKit Secure Video only if each has a real use case for you.
- Check Apple One: subtract the iCloud+ storage already included in any Apple One subscription you pay for.
- Compare the local monthly price: use Apple’s regional listing, not the US figures unless your account is billed in the United States.
- Leave headroom: select a tier that accommodates expected photo, video and backup growth instead of choosing a plan that is nearly full today.
If the resulting plan solves a storage problem or replaces services you would otherwise pay for, the monthly charge is usually easy to justify. If the only benefit is unused capacity, keeping the free tier avoids an unnecessary subscription.
