GlobalFoundries (GF) is a semiconductor foundry. It manufactures wafers and integrated circuits for companies that design chips, rather than selling phones, cars or other finished products under the GF name. Its specialty technologies cover wireless radio, low-power computing, embedded memory, automotive electronics, power management and silicon-photonic data links.

That makes GF chips easy to miss: the finished device carries the customer’s brand. Nevertheless, GF-manufactured components can support the wireless connection in a phone, radar and control systems in a car, the processor and memory in an IoT sensor, electronics in a medical wearable, optical networking in a data center and systems used in space.

What GlobalFoundries actually makes

A foundry turns a customer’s circuit design into physical silicon. The customer specifies what the integrated circuit must do; GF supplies a manufacturing process, builds the chips on silicon wafers and delivers the manufactured devices through the semiconductor supply chain. GF therefore makes semiconductor components, not consumer gadgets with a GlobalFoundries label.

GF describes its output as “essential semiconductors” for automotive, aerospace and defense, data centers, smart mobile devices, the Internet of Things and other high-growth markets. Its official corporate statement summarizes the role this way: “Essential chips are the foundation of modern life, and we make them.”

The company’s portfolio is organized around functions that finished products require:

  • Radio-frequency (RF) circuits for cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other wireless links.
  • Low-power digital and mixed-signal logic for controllers, sensors and connected devices.
  • Embedded nonvolatile memory, including embedded MRAM on selected platforms, so a system can store firmware or settings on the same die as logic.
  • Power-management and high-voltage technologies for supplying, switching or regulating energy.
  • Automotive-qualified processes for radar, safety, connectivity and control electronics.
  • Silicon photonics, which combines optical components with CMOS logic and RF circuitry for high-speed communications and computing.
  • Specialty materials and process platforms such as SiGe and GaN for radio, power and other demanding applications.

This mix is different from a company whose identity is built around one consumer processor family. GF’s value is the manufacturing platform and the ability to produce many kinds of chips reliably and at commercial scale.

How the foundry model puts GF inside a product

  1. A product company defines a function. It may need a phone radio, a vehicle radar controller, a low-power sensor hub or an optical transceiver.
  2. Chip designers create the circuit. The design includes logic, memory, analog blocks, RF sections or photonic elements as required by the product.
  3. The design is matched to a process platform. A designer can select a low-leakage FDX process, an RF process, a power technology, a FinFET platform or silicon photonics, depending on the requirements.
  4. GF fabricates wafers. Repeated layers of materials and patterned structures form many copies of the integrated circuit across each wafer.
  5. The manufactured IC enters the customer’s product chain. It may be combined with other chips and electronic assemblies before reaching a phone, vehicle, appliance, medical instrument or communications system.

This division explains why a product specification may never mention GF. The visible brand belongs to the device maker, while GF is the manufacturing partner behind one or more internal components. A single product can also contain chips made by several foundries, so finding one GF component does not mean every semiconductor in that product came from GF.

GF technology platforms and the jobs they perform

GF’s 2023 Form 20-F identifies FDX, FinFET and silicon-photonics CMOS platforms. The broader portfolio also includes RF, SiGe, GaN, embedded-memory and power technologies. The practical differences are best understood by the function each platform prioritizes.

Platform or technology Primary advantage Typical role or application
RF technologies Wireless signal generation, reception and processing Cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other radio-frequency connectivity in mobile and connected equipment
FDX / FD-SOI Very low power and leakage, with RF/mmWave capability and optional embedded MRAM IoT and wireless devices, 5G functions, automotive radar and satellite communications
FinFET Advanced digital transistor architecture for high-performance integrated circuits Digital logic and mixed systems where performance and integration are important
SiGe Specialized radio-frequency and high-speed signal capability RF and communications circuits that need characteristics beyond ordinary digital logic
GaN Wide-bandgap semiconductor option for demanding power or high-frequency functions Power and RF applications requiring a specialized material platform
Embedded memory Nonvolatile storage integrated with logic or control circuitry Microcontrollers, smartcards, eSIMs, access-control devices and other systems that need local firmware or data storage
Power and high-voltage technologies Energy conversion, switching and control at higher electrical stresses Automotive, industrial, infrastructure and other power-management circuits
Silicon photonics Optical devices integrated with CMOS logic and RF High-speed optical interconnects, data-center networking and communications equipment

No single platform is “the GF chip.” The right choice depends on the product’s constraints: power budget, wireless frequency, memory requirement, automotive reliability, voltage and current handling, sensor or mixed-signal integration, and whether the connection is electrical or optical.

Everyday devices and systems that can contain GF-manufactured chips

Smartphones and other mobile devices

GF identifies smart mobile devices as a core market, and its RF technologies support the radio-frequency front end and related wireless-connectivity functions. Those functions allow a phone or tablet to communicate over cellular networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and similar links. A GF-made component could therefore be one part of a phone’s communications subsystem rather than its main application processor.

The exact semiconductor mix varies by model, region and supplier. Unless the device maker or a reliable teardown identifies the source, it is not accurate to claim that every phone, or every chip in a particular phone, was made by GF.

Cars and transportation electronics

Modern vehicles use many semiconductor categories at once. GF connects its FDX capabilities to automotive radar and lists automotive as a major market. Automotive-grade processes can also support safety electronics, power control, connectivity and other electronic control functions.

In practical terms, a GF-manufactured IC might help a vehicle sense its surroundings with radar, manage a power subsystem, communicate with other systems or execute a control function. It is an internal component, not a replacement part sold to drivers under the GF name.

Smart-home and industrial IoT equipment

GF’s IoT applications include integrated microcontrollers with embedded memory, low-power long-range radio links, asset tracking, smart infrastructure, industrial automation, NFC, eSIM, smartcards and access-control silicon. These functions appear in products such as connected meters, tracking tags, building controllers, factory sensors, access badges and household devices.

Low power is especially important for battery-operated sensors. A controller that combines processing, memory and a radio can spend less energy moving data between separate components, while a long-range link can connect equipment installed far from a local gateway. The specific design still depends on the customer’s firmware, sensors and communications standard.

Wearables and health devices

GF’s sustainability reporting names fitness trackers, smart glasses, personal monitoring systems, medical equipment, glucose monitors, hearing aids and handheld ultrasound systems. These products need a combination of compact electronics, low-power operation, sensing, wireless communication and, in medical cases, dependable control circuitry.

A wearable may use a GF-manufactured controller, memory device, RF circuit or power-management component without displaying any GF branding. Medical and monitoring equipment can likewise contain several specialized ICs, each chosen for a different electrical or sensing task.

Data-center and communications equipment

Silicon photonics is GF’s clearest link to large-scale communications infrastructure. The technology integrates photonics with CMOS logic and RF, allowing electrical circuits to control and process optical signals. Optical interconnects can move data between networking equipment and computing systems at high speed, which is why the technology is relevant to data-center networking and communications equipment.

GF reported more than $200 million in silicon-photonics revenue in 2025, according to its 2025 fourth-quarter earnings deck. That is company revenue for the technology, not a count of devices or a statement that every data center uses GF photonics.

Aerospace and space systems

GF reports that its chips have flown in the International Space Station and the James Webb Space Telescope, as well as on missions to Mars and beyond Jupiter’s moons. Space electronics face unusually demanding reliability and environmental requirements. The examples show that GF’s manufacturing reach extends beyond consumer and industrial products into specialized systems where long service life and dependable operation matter.

Are GlobalFoundries chips in your phone?

They may be, but the answer cannot be determined from the phone brand alone. GF is a contract manufacturer, and the phone maker may not publicly identify which foundry produced each component. A handset can contain a GF-made RF or connectivity chip while using processors, memory and sensors from other manufacturing sources.

To verify a particular model, look for a manufacturer disclosure, a technically credible teardown that identifies the chip and its marking, or regulatory and supply-chain documentation that names the component manufacturer. Treat an inference based only on a chip’s function or a company’s market focus as unconfirmed. Product contents can also change between regions, storage configurations and production runs.

Which companies use GlobalFoundries chips?

GF serves customer companies across mobile, automotive, IoT, communications, aerospace, defense and medical markets. The supplied public information identifies these application areas but does not provide a complete customer list. That is normal for a foundry relationship: the customer’s product branding and chip design are distinct from the factory that manufactured the silicon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is more useful to ask what function a customer needs than to look for a universal “GF chip.” A company building a connected sensor may select low-power logic and embedded memory; a vehicle supplier may need automotive radar and power technologies; a networking supplier may choose silicon photonics. The same customer can use different foundries for different components.

Why specialty manufacturing matters

The smallest available transistor is not automatically the best choice for every circuit. RF, analog, high-voltage, embedded-memory and optical functions have requirements that are not captured by transistor density alone. A radio must handle signals at the required frequency. A battery device must minimize leakage and active power. A vehicle controller must meet automotive reliability expectations. A power circuit must tolerate its intended voltage and current. An optical link must connect electrical logic to light.

GF’s differentiated platforms let designers optimize for those constraints. FDX emphasizes ultra-low power and ultra-low leakage while adding RF/mmWave, embedded-MRAM and automotive capabilities. FinFET addresses advanced digital integration. Power, GaN, SiGe and RF technologies target specialized electrical behavior. Silicon photonics addresses the optical side of data movement. The result is a portfolio designed around system requirements rather than one headline specification.

What GF does not make

  • It does not sell finished smartphones, cars, fitness trackers or data centers under the GF name.
  • It generally does not design the complete consumer product that contains its chip.
  • It is not accurate to assume that a product with one GF-made component contains only GF silicon.
  • A market category is not proof that a particular retail model uses GF manufacturing.

The safest wording is that GF manufactures semiconductor components used in, or designed for, these application categories. A specific device claim requires a public source identifying that device’s component and manufacturing origin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to read a claim about GF inside a device

  1. Identify the exact product. Record model number, region and hardware revision.
  2. Identify the component. A teardown or technical document should name the actual IC, not merely describe its function.
  3. Separate designer from manufacturer. The logo on the chip may belong to the design company; it does not by itself establish where the wafer was fabricated.
  4. Check the date and configuration. Suppliers and factory assignments can change during a product’s life.
  5. State the conclusion narrowly. Say that a named component is reported as GF-manufactured, rather than claiming that the entire device is made by GF.

This approach avoids turning a broad application statement into an unsupported model-level claim.

Bottom line

GlobalFoundries makes the semiconductor building blocks behind wireless connectivity, low-power control, embedded memory, automotive electronics, power systems and optical data links. Those chips can appear in phones, cars, IoT equipment, wearables, medical instruments, data-center networks and spacecraft, but they are usually invisible to the consumer because GF is the manufacturing partner rather than the finished-product brand.
