“Free to claim” usually means you can add a PC game to a storefront account for $0 during a limited offer window. If the offer is a genuine “Free to Keep” promotion, the account normally receives a continuing license after the window closes. A Free Weekend or trial only grants temporary play access, while a free-to-play game is a separate category that is not necessarily a limited-time giveaway. The offer label, deadline, platform, region, and account terms determine what you actually receive.
What “free to claim” means
A free-to-claim game is being offered at no purchase price for a defined period. You must use the storefront’s claim, add-to-library, or equivalent button before the displayed deadline. The transaction creates an account-linked digital entitlement; it is not a physical copy, a transfer of copyright, or a general right to distribute the game.

“Claim” answers the question of how you obtain the offer. It does not, by itself, answer how long you may play. A storefront may be offering a permanent account license, a time-limited trial, a weekend event, or a normal free-to-play listing. Read the exact wording on the official game page rather than relying on a headline, social-media post, or a third-party deal list.

| Offer label | What you receive | What happens after the offer ends | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free to Keep | A license added to your storefront account for $0 during the promotion. | The promotion disappears, but the claimed license is intended to remain available under the store’s terms. | Claim deadline, platform, region, and whether the page explicitly says Free to Keep. |
| Free to claim / giveaway | An account entitlement under the specific giveaway’s conditions. | Duration varies. Do not assume permanence unless the offer terms say so. | The exact wording, deadline, and any eligibility restrictions. |
| Free Weekend, trial, or limited access | Permission to play for a short period. | Access normally ends when the event or trial expires unless you buy the game or receive a separate entitlement. | End date and time, included content, and whether progress carries over. |
| Free-to-play | A game listed with no purchase price for the base experience. | It remains a free-to-play listing, subject to the publisher and storefront’s terms; it is not a rotating giveaway. | Optional purchases, online requirements, platform support, and account rules. |
Steamworks defines “Free to Keep” as a time-limited promotion that lets a player permanently acquire a game license for free. Its documentation also says the free package is removed from the store page after the promotion and that Steam Free to Keep promotions must run for at least 24 hours. That minimum is a Steam platform rule, not a promise that every store or every giveaway follows the same schedule. See the Steamworks Free to Keep and Free Weekend documentation for the platform-specific description.

Epic’s Free Games page illustrates the distinction in its own layout: it promotes a free game each week and separately lists “Top Free to Play” titles. The page advertises a new free game each Thursday on mobile and PC, but individual games, deadlines, and regional availability can differ. That cadence should not be treated as a rule for other storefronts.
What you actually get when you claim one
Claiming normally records an entitlement against the account that completed the transaction. You may then install the game immediately or later, while the promotion is no longer visible to people who did not claim it. Downloading is a separate action unless the offer specifically says otherwise; you generally do not need to finish an installation before the deadline.
- Account record: the store records that the account received the game or license.
- Launcher access: future installation and updates usually require signing in to that same account and using the applicable launcher.
- Platform scope: a PC entitlement may not include a console or mobile version, even when the game has versions on several platforms.
- Content scope: the base game may be free while expansions, cosmetic items, downloadable content, or subscriptions remain paid.
- Terms-based access: the license is subject to the store’s and publisher’s rules, including account suspension, regional limits, and service availability.
License is not the same as ownership
Digital storefront language often uses “own” informally, but the legal relationship is usually a license to use software under stated conditions. In its Terms of Service, effective September 10, 2026, Epic Games states: The Licensed Products (and In-Game Content) you use are licensed to you, not sold.
The same section describes that license as limited, personal, non-transferable, revocable, non-exclusive, and non-sublicensable. The terms say they do not apply to the Epic Games Store itself, so this quotation should be read within the scope of the defined Licensed Products rather than treated as the complete store agreement. The source is the Epic Games Terms of Service.

In practical terms, a claim does not give you the game’s copyright, source code, trademarks, or permission to resell the account. Epic’s account terms also say accounts cannot be sold, given away, traded, or shared, and that sharing can lead to suspension or loss of access to licensed products. Other storefronts have their own wording, so check the agreement attached to the account and offer you are using.
How to check an offer before claiming it
- Open the official storefront page. Use the store or publisher page for the exact game, not only a deal aggregator or a screenshot.
- Read the offer label. Look for “Free to Keep,” “giveaway,” “Free Weekend,” “trial,” or “free-to-play.” Treat an unlabeled $0 price cautiously if no terms are visible.
- Record the deadline and time zone. A countdown may be localized to your browser, while a written date may use the store’s own time zone. Claim early rather than relying on the final minutes.
- Check platform and edition. Confirm that the offer is for PC, identify the launcher, and see whether it covers the standard edition or only a demo, test build, or add-on.
- Check region and eligibility. Some promotions exclude countries, require an age threshold, or limit redemption to new players, subscribers, or accounts without a previous entitlement.
- Sign in to the intended account. Verify the account name or email before selecting the claim button. Entitlements are generally not transferable between accounts.
- Complete the transaction. Proceed through the store’s $0 checkout or “Add to library” flow until you see a confirmation. A button that only starts a trial is not the same as a permanent claim.
- Verify the library entry. Open your account library or purchase history and confirm that the game appears before the deadline passes.
- Install separately when ready. Downloading, installing, and launching can happen later if the entitlement has been recorded and the account remains eligible.
How to compare two “free” offers
When two listings both show a $0 price, compare the facts that determine lasting access rather than the headline. This checklist works across storefronts:
| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is it a permanent account entitlement or temporary play access? | This determines whether the game should remain playable after the promotion. |
| When does claiming close, and in which time zone? | Missing the deadline can leave the game at its normal price or unavailable. |
| Which storefront account receives it? | A claim on one launcher normally does not unlock the same title on another launcher. |
| Which region and platform are eligible? | Country, operating system, edition, and hardware restrictions can change the result. |
| What does the license permit? | Transfer, resale, account sharing, and commercial use may be prohibited. |
| Is the base game complete? | Paid expansions, in-game purchases, subscriptions, or online services may still be required. |
What changes when the deadline passes
For a Free to Keep promotion, the storefront may remove the free package or claim button from the public store page while preserving licenses already added to accounts. Someone who never completed the claim may see the regular price afterward. Someone who claimed successfully should look in the account library rather than searching the public listing.

For a Free Weekend or trial, the end of the event normally removes play permission. The store may retain your installed files, but an installation alone does not prove that you have a continuing license. If the title offers a paid upgrade, check whether saved progress, achievements, or settings carry over before deciding to buy.
A free-to-play title does not have a separate giveaway deadline merely because a store is also running weekly promotions. Its availability and monetization model are governed by its own listing and terms.

The page says $0, but checkout shows a price
Check the promotion’s end time, region, edition, and account eligibility. A cached page, a different platform version, or an expired countdown can show stale information. Refresh the official page, confirm the store account’s country, and do not complete payment until the terms show the intended $0 offer.

The game is not in the library
Look for a transaction confirmation, purchase history entry, or email from the storefront. Make sure you are signed into the same account and launcher used during checkout. If the store reports an error, capture the order or transaction reference and contact that storefront’s support before attempting the claim on a different account.
The game is installed but will not launch after the event
That pattern is consistent with temporary access. Reopen the offer page and read whether it was a Free Weekend or trial. If the event ended, the files may remain on disk while the account lacks an active license.

Do not assume account sharing is allowed. Many services make licenses personal and prohibit selling, trading, lending, or sharing accounts. The safe approach is for each player to claim the offer through their own eligible account.

The offer disappeared before you downloaded it
Download status is usually separate from claim status. Check the account library and purchase history first. If the game is recorded there, reinstalling later should be governed by that entitlement and the store’s current service rules; if no record exists, the claim may not have completed.
Examples that make the distinction clear
Example 1: a one-week Free to Keep promotion
A store displays “Free to Keep” with a deadline Thursday at 11:00 a.m. You sign in, complete the $0 checkout, and see the game in your library. You can install it that afternoon or months later, subject to the account license and service terms. After Thursday, another customer may see a price, but the public page changing does not by itself cancel your recorded entitlement.
Example 2: a three-day Free Weekend
A store lets everyone play from Friday through Sunday. You install the game and create a save, but never buy it. When the event ends, the launcher can still show the installed files while blocking play. That was temporary access, not a permanent claim.
Example 3: a normal free-to-play listing
A game appears under the store’s free-to-play category all year. You can download the base game without waiting for a giveaway, while optional characters, cosmetics, or other content may cost money. The listing is not evidence of a limited claim window.
Account, region, and service continuity
Keep the login credentials, recovery email, and security methods for the account used to claim the game. Losing access to that account can be more consequential than losing the local installation because the launcher checks the entitlement online. Enable the storefront’s available security controls, avoid sharing credentials, and retain legitimate transaction confirmations.
Availability can also change because of regional licensing, age rules, platform shutdowns, publisher decisions, or a storefront’s service policies. A continuing license is not a promise that every online feature, server, downloadable update, or future operating-system version will remain available indefinitely. The offer page and applicable terms are the authoritative place to check those limits.
Quick Recap
A concise decision rule
- If the page explicitly says Free to Keep and you complete the claim before the deadline, treat it as a continuing account license, not a downloaded file you own outright.
- If it says Free Weekend, trial, or another temporary-access label, expect play to end unless you obtain a separate paid or permanent entitlement.
- If it is listed as free-to-play, it is a normal no-price base game, not necessarily a rotating promotion.
- If the wording is ambiguous, do not infer permanence from the $0 price. Read the official terms and confirm the entitlement in your account library.
