Curiosity’s Powder Acquisition Drill System (PADS) is a rotary-percussive drill mounted on the turret at the end of the rover’s robotic arm. It spins and hammers into bedrock, grinds material into powder, and uses an auger on the bit to move that powder into holding chambers. The rover then transfers the material to CHIMRA (Collection and Handling for In-Situ Martian Rock Analysis), which sieves and portions it for the SAM and CheMin laboratories inside the rover.

The drill is therefore more than a hole-making tool. It is the first stage of a sample-delivery chain that turns material below a rock’s weathered surface into measured portions that Curiosity can analyze. The design is specified to sample as deep as 5 centimeters (2 inches) and make a hole about 1.6 centimeters (0.63 inch) across, according to NASA/JPL’s 2011 Mars Science Laboratory Launch Press Kit.

What Curiosity’s drill is designed to do

The drill is one of several tools carried on Curiosity’s robotic-arm turret. NASA calls it the Powder Acquisition Drill System, or PADS. Its job is to obtain a controlled sample from solid rock, not merely to scratch the surface. Rock powder from beneath the exposed surface can reveal minerals and chemistry that dust, coatings, and weathering may hide.

PADS combines two motions:

  • Rotation: the bit turns against the rock and cuts a cylindrical hole.
  • Percussion: a hammering action repeatedly impacts the rock, helping fracture and grind it.

This rotary-percussive action produces particles small enough for the rover’s sample-processing and analytical systems. NASA/JPL’s press-kit specification gives a maximum sampling depth of 5 centimeters below a rock’s surface and an approximate hole diameter of 1.6 centimeters. Those are design capabilities, not a promise that every target is drilled to maximum depth.

How the drill collects powder, step by step

  1. The arm positions the turret against a rock

Curiosity’s robotic arm places the turret-mounted drill against a selected rock surface. The arm has to hold the bit steadily while maintaining the forces needed for cutting and hammering. Target selection and positioning are part of the scientific process: the team wants material that can answer a geological question while remaining within the rover’s mechanical and operational limits.

  2. Rotary-percussive action breaks the rock

Once commanded, the bit rotates while its percussion mechanism delivers impacts. Rotation cuts around the hole; impacts fracture the rock into small particles. The resulting powder is generated inside the bore rather than scraped from a broad surface. That distinction lets Curiosity examine material from a known depth and location.

  3. An auger carries the powder upward

Flutes or an auger on the drill bit convey the newly made powder upward through the bit assembly. NASA’s engineering descriptions say the material is stored in chambers inside that assembly. The powder is therefore retained temporarily instead of being allowed to fall back into the hole or scatter across the ground.

Drill cognizant engineer Avi Okon described the operation in NASA/JPL’s February 2013 report: “As we drill the hole, the powder gets conveyed up this tube and gets stored in the chamber inside the drill bit assembly.” The statement describes the physical route from the cutting face to the bit’s internal storage chambers.

  4. Motion and vibration help empty the bit

Collecting a sample does not end when the hole reaches its planned depth. NASA’s 2013 explanation says the rover uses wrist and turret motions, together with vibration from the drill’s percussion mechanism, to move powder from the bit assembly into CHIMRA. The drill’s hammering system thus assists both rock breakup and the handoff of material.

This transfer is deliberate rather than a simple fall-through. The rover has to move the stored powder out of the bit, through a sample-transfer route, and into its sample-handling hardware while limiting losses and contamination between activities.

  5. CHIMRA receives the drill material

CHIMRA stands for Collection and Handling for In-Situ Martian Rock Analysis. It is mounted on the rover’s arm and can receive material through a sample-transfer tube from the drill. CHIMRA can also accept loose soil gathered by Curiosity’s scoop, so the same processing device serves two different sources of material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  6. A sieve sorts the particles

Inside CHIMRA, a 150-micrometer sieve screens the material. Sieving produces a controlled particle fraction for the instruments and helps prevent oversized fragments from entering routes intended for finer powder. The sieve size is a hardware specification described in NASA’s 2013 “Preparing Samples on Mars” resource.

  7. The portion box meters the sample

After sieving, CHIMRA’s portion box routes prepared material into measured portions. Metering matters because Curiosity carries finite sample quantities and because each instrument has a defined inlet and operating procedure. A portion can be delivered to one instrument, while another portion can be retained or sent through a different route.

  8. SAM and CheMin analyze the prepared powder

The portion box supplies two laboratories inside the rover body:

What “collecting” means in this system

Curiosity does not vacuum powder from the ground. The drill creates the powder at the cutting face, the bit’s auger carries it upward, chambers hold it, and rover motions transfer it into CHIMRA. Collection is a sequence of mechanical operations involving the drill, the robotic arm, and the sample-handling device.

The arrangement also explains why the rover can analyze both bedrock and loose soil without carrying a separate laboratory for each. Bedrock enters through the drill’s transfer path; loose soil enters through the scoop. Both routes converge at CHIMRA, where particles are handled and screened before being portioned to SAM or CheMin. The starting material and entry point differ, but the downstream preparation hardware is shared.

Why powder is useful to Curiosity’s laboratories

A drilled core or chip is too large and irregular to deliver directly to the rover’s internal instruments. Powder exposes fresh mineral surfaces, can pass through a controlled sieve, and can be divided into repeatable portions. Producing powder also allows the instruments to consume only a small amount of material while preserving the ability to route additional portions.

The first full-depth drilling operation in 2013 illustrates the operational objective. NASA/JPL quoted Okon saying, “We commanded the first full-depth drilling, and we believe we have collected sufficient material from the rock to meet our objectives of hardware cleaning and sample drop-off.” Hardware cleaning was part of the procedure because residual material from one activity could affect a later sample. The quote describes that 2013 operation; it is not a statement about every subsequent drill event.

How the rover deals with drilling constraints

Feed-extended drilling was a historical workaround

NASA’s 2017 explanation documents a technique called “feed extended drilling.” It was developed after a period when the drill’s normal feed mechanism was unavailable for use. In this configuration, the bit was extended beyond its stabilizers and the robotic arm moved the bit onto and into the rock. A force sensor in the arm helped Curiosity adjust its motion and manage contact forces.

The 2017 account describes a shallow test hole and plans for deeper drilling and sample delivery. It is a historical engineering account, not evidence of Curiosity’s exact drill method or health in October 2026. The rover’s operational configuration can change as engineers adapt to wear, terrain, and hardware performance.

Spare bits are part of the design

NASA/JPL’s 2011 press kit describes two spare drill bits carried in bit boxes. If a bit became stuck, the rover was designed to disengage it and capture a spare. This is a capability built into the mission architecture, not confirmation that a particular spare is currently available or that one has been used.

What the 42-sample figure does—and does not—tell you

NASA published an image description on August 27, 2024, identifying 42 powdered-rock samples collected by Curiosity. The same description says the holes are each a little over 16 millimeters wide, matching the approximately 1.6-centimeter diameter specified in the 2011 press kit.

That number should be read with its date attached. It is not a live mission counter and does not establish how many powdered-rock samples Curiosity has collected by October 2026. The available material here also does not establish the rover’s current drill health, the quantity of powder obtained from any particular recent hole, or whether a specific spare bit is in use.

How a drilling operation differs from scooping soil

Characteristic Drilled rock sample Scooped soil sample
Starting material Solid rock below the exposed surface Loose surface material
Collection tool Powder Acquisition Drill System on the turret Robotic-arm scoop
Entry to sample handling Transfer from the drill bit assembly through the sample-transfer route Direct delivery from the scoop into CHIMRA
Shared processing CHIMRA sieving and portioning CHIMRA sieving and portioning
Downstream laboratories SAM and CheMin SAM and CheMin, when a portion is routed to them

The comparison is about sample source and route, not competing products. The drill is chosen when Curiosity needs material from coherent rock; the scoop is used for unconsolidated soil that can be gathered from the surface.

How to picture the complete sample path

A useful mental model is a seven-stage chain:

  1. Rock is selected and the arm places the drill.
  2. Rotation and percussion grind material below the surface.
  3. Flutes or an auger move powder upward.
  4. Chambers in the bit assembly hold the powder temporarily.
  5. Arm, turret, and percussion motions transfer it into CHIMRA.
  6. CHIMRA sieves and portions the material.
  7. SAM and CheMin receive prepared portions inside the rover.

Each stage has a separate job. The drill makes and conveys the powder; CHIMRA prepares it; the internal laboratories perform the measurements. Keeping those roles distinct prevents a common misunderstanding that the drill itself performs the chemical or mineralogical analysis.

Ways to explore the mechanism beyond photographs

NASA publishes detailed and simplified downloadable 3D Curiosity rover models with construction instructions and model files. A model can show the robotic-arm turret, drill location, and overall rover layout, but it should not be treated as a functional replica of the PADS or CHIMRA mechanisms.

For broader mission context, Rod Pyle’s book Curiosity, described by its publisher as covering the rover’s mission, includes discussion of drilling and early samples. It is a mission-history resource rather than a drill repair manual or a specification for current rover operations.

What is established—and what remains unknown

  • Established: PADS is a rotary-percussive drill mounted on Curiosity’s robotic-arm turret.
  • Established: the design specifies sampling as deep as 5 centimeters and an approximately 1.6-centimeter hole.
  • Established: an auger or flutes convey powder into chambers in the bit assembly.
  • Established: rover motion and drill percussion help transfer material to CHIMRA.
  • Established: CHIMRA uses a 150-micrometer sieve and a portion box to prepare material for SAM and CheMin.
  • Established: NASA reported 42 powdered-rock samples on August 27, 2024.
  • Not established by these dated descriptions: Curiosity’s exact drill health in October 2026, a current cumulative sample total, the mass from a specific recent drilling event, or present availability of any commercial replica.

In practical terms, Curiosity’s drill is a sampling-and-conveyance system. It reaches into rock, makes powder, lifts that powder through the bit, and hands it to a separate processing device. Only after CHIMRA has sieved and portioned the material does it reach the rover’s SAM and CheMin laboratories for scientific analysis.
