To judge whether a garment will last, look past the name at its fiber composition, construction, care requirements, and any pilling, abrasion, stretch-recovery, or laundering test results.
What “butter-soft” means on a clothing label
Butter-soft (also written buttery soft) describes how a fabric feels against the skin: unusually smooth, supple and low-friction. It is sensory marketing language rather than a regulated textile category. Different brands use the phrase for different fabrics, knits and garments, so the words alone do not identify a fiber or predict service life.

For example, LNDR uses “BUTTER SOFT” for a leggings category it describes as light in thickness, medium in compression and buttery in feel. P.E Nation describes its BODY LUXE fabrication as barely-there, lightly compressive and buttery to the hand. Those descriptions communicate intended feel and fit; they are not a shared industry specification. You can read the brand explanations at LNDR’s FAQs and the P.E Nation fabrication guide.

Why softness does not tell you how long leggings will last
Durability is a group of measurable properties, not one sensation. A garment can be exceptionally smooth yet develop pills, shine, thinning or loss of stretch when it repeatedly rubs against equipment, seats, bags, rough clothing or itself.
ASTM notes that pilling is influenced by fiber or blend, fiber dimensions, yarn and fabric construction, finishing and the method used to refurbish or clean the specimen. The organization’s catalog entry for D3512/D3512M identifies these construction and material factors. Surface softness is only one part of that system.
Do not treat “butter-soft,” opaque, “squat-proof,” a high-stretch claim or a sustainability label as proof of long-term wear unless the seller supplies separate evidence for the relevant property. A soft hand-feel can be a comfort advantage while offering no information about abrasion life or elastic recovery.
Start with the actual fiber composition
Read the fiber-content line on the product page and sewn-in label. A name that sounds like a material may be a proprietary family name instead. MUKI, for instance, lists one ButterSoft legging as 81% nylon and 19% spandex; its composition is the useful fact, not the ButterSoft name. The product listing is at MUKI’s ButterSoft legging page.

Composition helps you compare garments, but it still does not guarantee a particular lifespan. The same broad fiber categories can be spun into different yarns, knitted at different densities and finished differently. When a seller does not disclose percentages, fabric weight or construction, mark that information as unknown rather than assuming the fabric is premium or fragile.
- Fiber percentages: Record the exact blend, including elastane or spandex content.
- Fabric weight or thickness: Use it only when the seller states a value or clearly identifies a weight category; “light” is not a universal measurement.
- Construction: Look for a stated knit type, double layer, gusset and reinforced or flat seams. If none is specified, do not infer it from photographs.
- Stretch and recovery: A high-stretch fabric may feel comfortable, but ask whether recovery was tested rather than assuming stretch equals resilience.
What evidence actually indicates durability?
Pilling results
Pilling is the formation of small fiber balls or related surface changes after rubbing. ASTM D4970/D4970M is a laboratory method using a Martindale tester to assess pilling and related changes. In the cited catalog edition, visual ratings run from 5 (no pilling) to 1 (very severe pilling). The method and scale are described in ASTM’s D4970/D4970M catalog entry.
Ask the seller for the test method, specimen fabric, number of cycles, laundering or conditioning used, and the resulting rating. A rating applies to the tested sample under those conditions. It is not a promise that every color, production batch or wearer will receive the same result.
Abrasion results
Abrasion is the gradual loss or change caused by rubbing and is distinct from pilling. ASTM lists D4966-22(2026) as a Martindale abrasion-resistance test method. A report should identify the fabric tested and the endpoint used, such as visible breakdown or a specified number of cycles.

An abrasion result cannot be converted into “this will last three years.” Real use combines different pressures, moisture, washing, heat, body oils and contact surfaces. Pilling and abrasion tests answer different questions, so one should not be presented as a substitute for the other.
Stretch-recovery and laundering data
For leggings, useful additional evidence would include a named stretch-recovery or laundering procedure, the number of cycles, and measurements before and after. If a page merely says “keeps its shape,” treat that as a marketing claim unless a method and result accompany it.
Use the care label as part of your durability assessment
Care instructions reveal what the maker considers a risk. Follow the label for the specific garment; instructions for one “butter-soft” legging cannot safely replace another garment’s directions.
SET Active warns on its Breathe leggings product page that contact with rougher fabrics during washing or wear can cause pilling. It recommends turning the leggings inside out, using a cold delicate cycle, washing with like fabrics, avoiding towels and denim, and avoiding fabric softener. See the product-specific guidance at SET Active’s Breathe leggings listing.

- Separate by surface: Keep smooth activewear away from towels, denim, hook-and-loop fasteners and other abrasive items.
- Reduce mechanical stress: Use the stated delicate or low-agitation cycle and cold water when the label calls for it.
- Skip unapproved additives: Do not add fabric softener when the maker advises against it; it can alter the finish or affect performance.
- Control heat: Use only the drying method on the label. High heat can stress elastic fibers, but the correct method depends on the garment.
- Consider separation: A mesh laundry bag can keep delicate leggings apart from rougher items. It may help with separation, but the cited care guidance does not claim that a bag prevents pilling.
Care directions are not proof that a fabric is weak. They are a practical way to limit avoidable abrasion and chemical or heat exposure after purchase.
A step-by-step way to judge a pair before buying
- Identify the exact product and version. Save the product name, color and fabric description. A brand may use the same feel name across several constructions.
- Copy the composition. Record every listed fiber percentage. If the page does not state composition, treat that omission as a comparison limitation.
- Check construction details. Look for fabric weight, knit description, seam finishing, gusset information and stated compression. Separate observed details from claims made by the seller.
- Match the garment to your activity. Light, barely-there fabric may suit low-impact wear, while frequent floor work, cycling or contact with rough equipment imposes more abrasion. Choose based on the disclosed intended use rather than softness alone.
- Search the page for test evidence. Look specifically for pilling, abrasion, stretch-recovery or laundering methods, conditions and results. “Tested” without those details is not enough to compare products.
- Read every care instruction. Confirm whether cold delicate washing, inside-out washing, line drying or avoidance of certain fabrics is required and whether you can follow it consistently.
- Check recourse for early wear. Review the return window, exclusions for normal wear and any warranty. These terms do not make a fabric durable, but they determine your options if a defect appears.
- Inspect on arrival. Under good light, check seams, crotch and waistband joins, fabric uniformity and any loose threads. Photograph defects before wearing or washing if the seller requires evidence for a claim.
How to compare two “butter-soft” garments
Put the disclosed information side by side instead of ranking the names. The comparison below shows the fields that matter and how to interpret missing data.
| Comparison field | What to record | What it can—and cannot—tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Fiber content | Exact percentages, such as nylon and spandex | Identifies the material blend; does not establish a lifespan by itself |
| Weight or thickness | Stated grams per square metre, ounces, or a defined category | Helps indicate coverage and feel when measured; “light” alone is not standardized |
| Construction | Knit type, seam finish, gusset or reinforcement if disclosed | Provides clues about stress points; photographs are not a laboratory result |
| Compression and intended use | Brand’s level and activity description | Helps match the garment to use; does not measure abrasion resistance |
| Pilling test | ASTM method or another named method, cycles, conditions and rating | Describes surface change under that test; not a guaranteed wash count |
| Abrasion test | Method, endpoint, cycles and fabric tested | Measures rubbing resistance; pilling is a separate property |
| Stretch recovery | Named procedure and before/after measurements | Shows retention under the reported conditions; not a universal guarantee |
| Care requirements | Water temperature, cycle, drying and prohibited items | Shows how to reduce avoidable damage; must be followed for the actual garment |
| Return or warranty terms | Time limit, wear conditions and exclusions | Defines your remedy if a defect appears; does not improve the fabric |
If one listing provides a test method and result while another offers only “buttery-soft” language, the first listing gives you more decision-grade information. It is still not proof that the garment will outlast the other one without comparable test conditions.

A test number lacks a method
Do not compare an unexplained “50,000 cycles” claim with an ASTM result. Request the standard, endpoint, specimen and conditioning. Different methods and endpoints can produce numbers that are not interchangeable.
Pilling appears after a few wears
Photograph the affected areas and review the care label. Note whether the rubbing came from a bag, seat, equipment or another garment. Contact the seller within its stated return or warranty period and provide the requested purchase and care details. Pilling can arise from contact conditions even when a garment has no manufacturing defect, so the seller’s terms matter.
The waistband or knees lose shape
Separate loss of stretch recovery from surface pilling when describing the problem. Ask whether the maker has a stretch-recovery or laundering specification; a pilling rating does not answer a shape-retention complaint.

Care instructions conflict with your routine
If you cannot reliably wash and dry the garment as directed, select a product whose requirements fit your routine. A theoretically durable fabric can still wear prematurely when repeatedly exposed to unsuitable heat or abrasion.
What is not established about butter-soft lifespan
There is no universal wash-count, number of years or pass threshold for garments marketed as butter-soft in the cited material. Brand descriptions explain feel, compression or care, while ASTM methods describe controlled properties. Neither supplies a population-wide lifespan estimate for every wearer.
The most defensible conclusion is therefore conditional: softness predicts comfort more directly than durability. Durability confidence rises when a seller discloses composition, construction, relevant test methods and results, realistic care instructions and clear recourse for defects. When those details are absent, the label should be treated as a comfort cue—not a promise of longevity.
