Superintelligence generally means capability that exceeds the strongest human performance, including the best experts and, in some definitions, experts assisted by AI. In that sense, AGI describes the breadth and minimum level of ability; superintelligence describes a higher performance threshold.
Neither label has a universally accepted technical definition or certification. Organizations set different task scopes, human baselines, reliability requirements and autonomy thresholds, so a claim that a system is “AGI” or “superintelligent” is meaningful only when its definition, tests, date and comparison baseline are stated.

What artificial general intelligence means
Artificial intelligence is the broad field of systems that perform tasks associated with intelligence. The word general adds a demanding requirement: the system must transfer useful capability across substantially different tasks and domains instead of excelling at one narrow problem.
The National AI Advisory Committee’s 2023 FAQ identifies two ingredients that appear in many AGI definitions: generality, meaning competence across a broad range of tasks, and a competency threshold, often performance that meets or exceeds a human-level standard. The committee also says there is no agreed definition of AGI. That statement is important: AGI is a proposed category, not an official status awarded by a single standards body.

OpenAI’s definition
OpenAI’s Charter defines AGI as “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.” This is OpenAI’s organizational definition, not a universal rule. It combines three conditions that other definitions may treat differently: broad coverage of economically valuable work, performance above humans, and a high degree of autonomy. The Charter also says, “The timeline to AGI remains uncertain.”
Google DeepMind’s definition
Google DeepMind’s April 2, 2025 safety article describes AGI as “AI that’s at least as capable as humans at most cognitive tasks, could be here within the coming years.” This wording focuses on cognitive tasks and a comparison with humans rather than on economic value or a specific level of independent action. It illustrates why two organizations can discuss AGI while applying different tests.
A practical working definition
For everyday explanation, AGI can be treated as a single AI system that can learn, reason and perform a wide variety of cognitive tasks at approximately human-level competence, including tasks it was not narrowly engineered to solve. “Approximately” matters: no serious definition says every task must be perfect. The unresolved questions are how wide the task set must be, which human population supplies the baseline, how much training or tool use is allowed, and how reliably the ability transfers to unfamiliar situations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat superintelligence means
Superintelligence usually refers to a system whose capabilities are decisively above the strongest human performance. It is therefore primarily a claim about performance depth, while AGI is primarily a claim about breadth. A system could be broad without being the best at every task, and a system could be extraordinarily strong in one area without being general.

The boundary is also not standardized. Google DeepMind’s report dated June 12, 2026 describes artificial general superintelligence intuitively as a system “more intelligent and cognitively capable than large organisations of humans.” OpenAI’s 2026 policy document describes superintelligence as AI systems “capable of outperforming the smartest humans even when they are assisted by AI.” These are useful organizational framings, not competing entries in a settled technical standard. The first emphasizes collective human-scale capability; the second sets a particularly demanding expert-plus-AI comparison.
Because the strongest-human baseline changes as people gain better tools, “superhuman” is not a single fixed mark. A claim should identify whether it means better than an average person, better than most professionals, better than the best unaided specialists, or better than the best specialists working with AI.
AGI and superintelligence compared
The following dimensions help separate claims that are often compressed into one label. Google DeepMind’s 2024 framework is useful because it distinguishes performance from generality and discusses autonomy as a related deployment concern; it is not a globally binding test.
| Dimension | AGI question | Superintelligence question | Why the distinction matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Breadth (generality) | Can one system handle many substantially different cognitive tasks and domains? | Does that broad coverage extend across domains at a level beyond the best humans? | A specialist can be exceptional without being general. |
| Performance depth | Does performance meet a stated human-level threshold across the tested range? | Does performance exceed the strongest relevant human baseline, potentially including AI-assisted experts? | “Human-level” and “best-human-plus-AI” are materially different thresholds. |
| Reliability and transfer | Does competence hold on novel tasks and unfamiliar settings, not only familiar benchmarks? | Does superiority persist when tasks, environments and adversarial conditions change? | A benchmark result is evidence about its tested setting, not proof of universal ability. |
| Autonomy | Can the system plan and act over time with limited human direction? | Can it pursue complex goals, coordinate activity and adapt with little or no supervision? | Autonomy affects deployment and risk, but it is a separate axis from raw intelligence. |
| Scope of comparison | Which tasks count: cognitive work generally, or economically valuable work? | Which humans count: average users, professionals, the best specialists, or AI-assisted specialists? | The chosen scope can change the conclusion without any change in the model. |
Why a strong model is not automatically AGI
A system may produce impressive results in coding, medical question answering, mathematics or language generation and still fail a generality test. General intelligence requires a broad portfolio of abilities and dependable transfer between them. It also requires handling the unanticipated details that real work contains: ambiguous instructions, incomplete information, changing objectives, unfamiliar tools and the need to check whether an answer is actually correct.

The National AI Advisory Committee’s FAQ cautioned in 2023 against treating foundation models as automatically meeting an AGI threshold. It pointed to limitations then observed in planning and acting in the physical world, as well as inconsistent mathematical calculation and reasoning. That is a dated committee assessment, not an exhaustive judgment about every later system. Its broader lesson remains useful: a model’s architecture or marketing category does not establish general intelligence by itself.
Even a very high score on a public benchmark has a bounded meaning. The score reflects the tasks, prompts, data contamination controls, tools, time limits and scoring rules used in that evaluation. A credible generality claim therefore needs multiple domains, hidden or newly created tasks, measurements of error and recovery, and tests of whether skills transfer when surface details change.
How to evaluate an AGI or superintelligence claim
When a company, researcher or commentator applies either label, ask for the following information before accepting the conclusion:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Definition: Which meaning of AGI or superintelligence is being used? Quote the organization’s definition if it has one.
- Task scope: List the domains and task types tested. “Most tasks” is not informative without a stated inventory or sampling method.
- Human baseline: Specify whether the comparison is with an average person, trained professionals, top experts, or experts using AI assistance.
- Autonomy conditions: Record what instructions, tools, memory, supervision and ability to take external actions the system received.
- Novelty and transfer: Check performance on tasks created after training or on unfamiliar environments, not just established public tests.
- Reliability: Examine error rates, calibration, consistency across repeated attempts and the system’s ability to detect and correct mistakes.
- Date and version: Identify the exact model, software configuration and evaluation date. Capabilities and benchmarks change.
- Independent evidence: Look for evaluations that disclose methods and results rather than relying solely on the developer’s demonstrations.
This checklist does not create a universal certification. It makes the claim precise enough to compare with other claims and to see which parts remain untested.

Generality, performance and autonomy are different
It is helpful to imagine three separate sliders rather than one ladder. Generality measures how many kinds of tasks a system can handle. Performance measures how well it handles each task against a specified baseline. Autonomy measures how independently it can plan and act over time. A system might score high on breadth but only around human level on individual tasks; another might exceed experts in a narrow field but have little breadth; a third might be broad and capable yet require constant human approval.
DeepMind’s framework connects autonomy to deployment and risk without treating it as identical to intelligence. OpenAI’s Charter, by contrast, builds high autonomy directly into its definition of AGI. Those choices explain why two assessments can disagree without either side making a measurement error: they may be answering different questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is superintelligence the next stage after AGI?
In common usage, yes: AGI is often presented as a broad, roughly human-level threshold, while superintelligence is a later threshold at which broad capability substantially exceeds the best humans. That ordering is a useful conceptual model, not a guaranteed development sequence. A system could become superhuman in selected domains before it is robustly general, and a broadly capable system might remain uneven rather than suddenly crossing a single line.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Scaling AGI: increasing the system’s resources, training or operating scale.
- AI paradigm shifts: developing new methods rather than relying only on incremental improvements.
- Recursive improvement: systems contributing to the design or enhancement of successor systems.
- Large-scale multi-agent collectives: coordinating many capable agents so their combined work exceeds what one system can do.
The report presents these as possibilities, not forecasts. The timing, technical route and eventual capability of any transition remain uncertain.
What can be said about current systems?
No authority in the definitions above certifies a present-day system as AGI or superintelligent. The responsible statement is conditional: identify the system, date, tasks, tools, benchmark and baseline, then say which definition the evidence supports or fails to support. Avoid treating a product category, a single demonstration or a headline score as proof that the system has crossed a universally accepted boundary.
Definitions can also change. An organization may revise its threshold, a benchmark may become familiar, or a new evaluation may reveal weaknesses that earlier tests missed. Claims about a specific system should therefore be dated and revisited when the model or evaluation method changes.
Bottom line
AGI means broad competence across many cognitive tasks, usually with a human-level comparison in the definition. Superintelligence means capability beyond the strongest humans, with some definitions extending that comparison to AI-assisted experts or large human organizations. The difference is not a universally fixed score: it depends on breadth, performance depth, transfer, autonomy and the human baseline chosen. Treat both labels as shorthand for an explicitly described set of tests, not as official certifications.
