You can place a sell order at that price, but it is not a guaranteed exit: your shares sell only when a matching buyer and sufficient buy quantity reach your order under exchange priority rules. If the entire market is halted by an index-wide circuit breaker, orders cannot execute until trading resumes.
Upper circuit, in plain terms
Indian exchanges use daily price bands to limit how far many securities can move from the previous close in one trading session. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) describes price bands as the range in which a security can move. When a stock reaches the top of that range, it is said to have hit its upper circuit or upper price limit.

The limit is a trading ceiling for that session, not a promise that every holder can sell there. A quote on a chart or market-depth screen shows the permitted or last traded price. It does not prove that enough buyers are available for all pending sell orders.
A simple example
Assume a stock closed at ₹100 and has a 10% daily band. Its upper limit for the next session is ₹110 and its lower limit is ₹90. A sell limit order at ₹110 is valid. It can execute only against buy orders at ₹110, and it must wait behind any earlier sell orders at that same price. If no shareholder offers shares, the screen can show ₹110 with buyers waiting while your sell order remains unfilled.

How the daily price band is set
The applicable band depends on the security and exchange rules. NSE lists fixed daily bands of 2%, 5%, 10% and 20% for securities to which those categories apply. The percentage is measured from the previous close, subject to the exchange’s calculation and adjustment rules.
| Previous close | Band | Illustrative upper limit | Illustrative lower limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹100 | 2% | ₹102 | ₹98 |
| ₹100 | 5% | ₹105 | ₹95 |
| ₹100 | 10% | ₹110 | ₹90 |
| ₹100 | 20% | ₹120 | ₹80 |
These figures are illustrations of the percentages, not a quotation for any particular company. The exchange’s current security-level information controls the actual limit on a trading day.
Stocks with derivatives may be treated differently
Securities that have derivatives generally do not use one standard fixed daily band in the same way as many cash-equity securities. NSE can instead apply a dynamic operating range. That range is designed to manage trading conditions while allowing the price to move; its exact parameters and any changes are security-specific. Check the exchange’s current quote and applicable notices rather than assuming that every stock has a 2%, 5%, 10% or 20% ceiling.

Can you sell shares at the upper circuit?
Yes, you can submit a sell order at the upper-limit price when your broker and the exchange accept that order type. No, the order is not guaranteed to fill merely because the stock has touched or is displayed at the upper circuit.

Exchange order books match compatible buy and sell orders according to price and time priority. At the upper limit, a seller needs a buyer willing to pay that price. If buy quantity is smaller than the sell quantity ahead of you, only part of your order may fill. If no eligible buyer is available, it remains pending or expires according to its validity.
What “only buyers” means
A stock locked at the upper circuit often has more buy orders than available sell quantity. The order book may show a long queue of buyers and little or no offer quantity. Existing holders cannot all exit into that queue because a buy order is not the same as an executed trade: another holder must actually release shares, and the matching engine must reach your order.
Why your order can be pending
- No matching quantity: there are buyers displayed, but no sell quantity available at the limit.
- Queue priority: earlier sell orders at the same price are matched first.
- Partial liquidity: only part of your requested quantity has a matching buyer.
- Order validity: a day order can expire at the session close; another validity setting may have different rules.
- Trading status: the security may be in a halt, auction, surveillance measure or another exchange state that changes matching.
- Broker or product restrictions: intraday, margin and market-order handling can differ by broker and instrument.
Order placement versus execution
These are separate events. Placing an order sends your instruction to the broker and, if accepted, to the exchange. Execution occurs only when the matching engine finds an opposite-side order satisfying price, quantity and trading-status conditions.

Individual stock limit versus market-wide circuit breaker
These terms are often confused, but they describe different controls.
Individual price band
An individual stock can reach its upper band while the broader market continues trading. Depending on the security’s status, queued orders may continue to match at the permitted price. The stock can remain “locked” because demand is one-sided, yet the exchange has not stopped all equity trading.
Market-wide breaker
SEBI’s market-wide circuit-breaker framework applies to broad indices such as the Sensex or Nifty at 10%, 15% and 20% movements. When a threshold is triggered, equity-market trading halts for a prescribed period determined by the trigger and the time of day. During the halt, an order cannot execute because the market is not matching trades. A reopening auction or normal session follows the exchange’s published procedure.
A stock being at its own upper circuit does not, by itself, mean a market-wide halt is active. Look for the exchange or broker status message that identifies an index-wide breaker.

What happens to a sell order at the limit?
Before any match
Your order is accepted into the book if it passes price, quantity, product and risk checks. It receives a place in the queue. The displayed upper-limit price does not move your order to the front.
When buyers arrive
Incoming buy orders at the permitted price match the earliest eligible sell orders first. Your order may fill completely, partially or not at all. A partial fill leaves the balance active if the order remains valid.
If the price moves away from the limit
If the band is revised, the operating range opens, or normal matching resumes after a trading condition changes, additional prices may become available under the exchange’s rules. Your broker’s order-status screen should show whether the original order is still active, rejected, cancelled or filled.
Market orders and broker-specific handling
A market order means you want execution at available prices, but it does not override a price band or a halt. Broker systems may protect customers by converting or constraining a market order when the stock is at a circuit price. Zerodha’s support material, for example, explains that market-price protection can convert a market order into a limit order at the prevailing circuit price. That behavior is broker- and instrument-dependent, so read the order preview and product disclosures on your platform.
Best Value
For a stock at an upper limit, a limit sell order at the permitted price makes the intended price explicit, but it still requires a buyer. A market order may be rejected, converted, or remain subject to the same lack of opposite-side quantity.
Cash-equity holdings and intraday positions are not identical
Delivery or cash-equity shares
If you own settled shares, you can generally place a sell instruction subject to your broker’s holdings, authorization and settlement checks. Execution still depends on matching. If the order does not fill before the session ends, review whether it expired and whether you need to submit a new order on the next trading day.
Intraday positions
Intraday products can have additional square-off, margin and conversion rules. When a stock becomes one-sided at an upper circuit, a broker may be unable to close an intraday position immediately. Zerodha notes that broker-specific conversion or margin treatment can apply in this situation. You may need sufficient funds, a conversion to delivery where permitted, or another action required by your broker. Do not assume that an intraday position will be automatically exited at the displayed circuit price.

How to check whether you can realistically exit
- Confirm the instrument: verify the exchange segment, symbol, series and whether you hold delivery shares or an intraday position.
- Check the current band or operating range: use the exchange’s security page or your broker’s quote details. Do not infer the limit from a rounded chart.
- Identify the market state: distinguish an individual upper limit from an index-wide halt, auction, suspension or surveillance status.
- Inspect market depth: note buy quantity at the permitted price, sell quantity ahead of you and any displayed queue information. Depth is indicative and can change or be cancelled.
- Select an allowed order type: review limit, market, stop and validity choices. At a circuit, some products or order types may be blocked.
- Enter quantity conservatively: if liquidity is thin, a smaller order can make partial execution easier to understand, but it does not guarantee priority.
- Verify the order status: distinguish “open” or “pending” from “partially filled,” “complete,” “rejected” and “cancelled.”
- Recheck before the close: a day order that remains unmatched may expire. Record any unfilled quantity and the broker’s next-session procedure.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming the chart price is a sale price: treat it as the permitted or last traded price, not guaranteed liquidity.
- Confusing a buy queue with a fill: buyers can cancel, reduce quantity or sit behind other orders.
- Using a market order without reading protections: the broker may reject or convert it at a circuit.
- Ignoring order priority: cancelling and replacing can move you to the back of the queue.
- Overlooking the product type: intraday margin and square-off rules can create obligations even when selling is impossible.
- Missing a halt announcement: no order executes during an active market-wide breaker.
- Expecting the band to be permanent: limits and operating ranges are security- and session-specific and can be revised under exchange rules.
What the official definitions establish
NSE’s explanation is concise: “Price bands determine the range in which a security can move.” NISM describes individual stocks, excluding futures and options in its cited explanation, as commonly having 2%, 5%, 10% or 20% bands beyond which they cannot trade in a single day. SEBI’s market-wide framework uses 10%, 15% and 20% index thresholds, with the halt duration determined by the trigger and time.
Those definitions establish the ceiling and the halt mechanism. They do not establish that every holder can transact at the ceiling. That outcome still depends on the order book, matching priority, order validity, security status and broker handling.
Decision guide: what to do when your stock is locked upper circuit
| Your situation | Most relevant action |
|---|---|
| You own delivery shares and want to sell | Place an allowed limit sell order at the current permitted price, then monitor queue and status; accept that it may remain unfilled. |
| Your order is pending with buyers displayed | Check whether there is sell quantity ahead of you, whether the order is valid for the rest of the session and whether the stock is halted. |
| The entire market is halted | Wait for the exchange’s announced reopening; no order can execute during the halt. |
| You hold an intraday position | Read the broker’s circuit, margin and conversion instructions immediately; do not assume automatic exit. |
| You need certainty of execution | Recognize that no order can guarantee a fill without matching opposite-side liquidity. |
Bottom line
An upper circuit is a session price ceiling, not a guaranteed selling opportunity. You can place a sell order at the upper-limit price, but it executes only if a matching buyer is available for your quantity and your order reaches the front of the exchange’s priority queue. A market-wide circuit breaker is different: trading is halted, so execution must wait until the market reopens. Always verify the security’s current band, live order status, product rules and broker-specific handling before deciding whether you can exit.
