Each release combines an alliterative adjective and animal—such as Noble Numbat for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or Resolute Raccoon for Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. The version number tells you when the release first appeared, while the LTS designation tells you to expect a longer maintenance period.
Support depends on the release type, repository, edition and any optional Ubuntu Pro coverage. LTS releases receive five years of standard security maintenance for packages in Main; interim releases receive nine months of updates. Extended Security Maintenance (ESM) and the optional Legacy add-on can extend coverage for eligible LTS installations.

What an Ubuntu codename means
Ubuntu assigns every release a development codename and a version number. The Ubuntu Wiki summarizes the naming rule simply: “Each release has a codename.” In practice, the public name uses an alliterative adjective followed by an animal.

| Codename | Version | Release type |
|---|---|---|
| Noble Numbat | 24.04 | LTS |
| Resolute Raccoon | 26.04 | LTS |
| Questing Quokka | 25.10 | Interim |
The name is mainly a human-friendly identifier. It is useful in documentation, bug reports, upgrade instructions and community discussions because “Noble” or “Resolute” is easier to remember than a number alone. It does not encode the kernel version, desktop environment, hardware support, performance level or maintenance period.
What the words do not tell you
There is no established technical rule that gives every adjective or animal a guaranteed feature, quality or support promise. A word such as “Noble” is not a claim that the release is more secure than another release, and the animal does not indicate how long updates will be available. To determine support, look at the numerical version and whether the release is marked LTS.
How Ubuntu version numbers work
Ubuntu’s version number uses the year and month of the initial release in a two-part format: YY.MM. Therefore, 24.04 means the original release arrived in April 2024, while 26.04 means April 2026.
Initial releases and point releases
A later maintenance image can add a third number. For example, 24.04.5 is a point release of the 24.04 series, not a separate codename or a new support track. Point releases refresh installation media and consolidate fixes while remaining within the same major Ubuntu release series.
The codename and number identify the same release in different ways: “Noble Numbat” is the memorable label, and “24.04” identifies its release year and month. Use both when checking compatibility or reporting a problem, because software instructions may refer to either form.

Ubuntu’s release cadence: LTS and interim editions
Ubuntu follows a time-based schedule of approximately one release every six months. This schedule gives users a regular path to newer kernels, language runtimes and toolchains.
LTS releases
Long Term Support, abbreviated LTS, arrives every two years in April. Canonical positions LTS as the choice for longer-lived systems, production deployments and users who prefer fewer major upgrades. An LTS release has a five-year period of standard security maintenance for packages in the Main repository.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInterim releases
Interim releases appear between LTS versions on the six-month cycle. They are production-quality releases for users and teams who want newer software sooner, but they receive only nine months of updates. That short window requires a planned upgrade to a subsequent release rather than leaving the installation unchanged for years.
Choosing interim does not mean choosing an experimental build; it means accepting a faster lifecycle and more frequent upgrade work in exchange for earlier access to changes.
How Ubuntu support periods are calculated
“Ubuntu is supported for X years” is incomplete unless it identifies the release type, maintenance tier and package scope. The periods below describe the distinct layers of coverage.

| Coverage | Who it applies to | Published period | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard security maintenance | LTS releases | Five years | Applies to packages in Main; verify the release’s lifecycle entry. |
| Interim updates | Interim releases | Nine months | Plan an upgrade before the listed end-of-life date. |
| Expanded Security Maintenance (ESM) | Eligible Ubuntu installations using Ubuntu Pro | Additional five years for LTS releases; Canonical’s lifecycle overview describes ten years of ESM coverage for Main and Universe after the standard period. | Eligibility, repository and package coverage vary by release and component. |
| Legacy add-on | Eligible LTS releases with the paid Legacy option | Up to another five years after the ESM period, for as much as 15 years of security maintenance and support | Confirm current plan terms and which packages are covered. |
Standard maintenance is not the same as ESM
The five-year LTS figure refers to standard security maintenance, particularly for packages in Main. ESM is optional extended coverage supplied through Ubuntu Pro; it is not automatically included merely because an installation is an LTS release. Canonical’s release tables can show an end-of-life date that includes extended coverage, so that date must not be read as the end of standard support.
Repository and package scope matters
Main and Universe do not necessarily receive identical treatment under every support tier. Before relying on an old package, check the release-specific lifecycle information and the repository in which that package is published. A long calendar period does not mean every package receives identical updates for the entire period.
Current release examples checked in October 2026
The following entries reflect the official release list as checked on October 13, 2026. Lifecycle schedules can change, so verify the current entry before making an upgrade or compliance decision.
| Release | Codename | Initial release | Standard-support end | Listed end of life |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu 26.04 LTS | Resolute Raccoon | April 23, 2026 | May 2031 | April 2041 |
| Ubuntu 24.04 LTS | Noble Numbat | April 25, 2024 | June 2029 | April 2039 |
| Ubuntu 25.10 | Questing Quokka | Interim release | Not applicable as an LTS standard-support date | July 2026 |
The 26.04 and 24.04 end-of-life entries may reflect extended maintenance availability, not five or ten years of standard maintenance. The 25.10 date illustrates the practical consequence of the interim model: its update window ends far sooner than that of an LTS release.
Ubuntu flavors can have different lifetimes
Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Server are not the only ways to use Ubuntu. Recognized flavors may publish their own support arrangements. Ubuntu project documentation says flavor LTS support is generally three years, with exceptions. Do not assume that installing a flavor automatically gives you the same lifecycle as the main Ubuntu edition.

For a flavor, identify the exact flavor and release first, then read that project’s support policy. The codename may be shared across the Ubuntu family, while the maintenance promise differs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check the release installed on a system
Use the system’s own release information rather than guessing from the desktop appearance or installer date.
- Open a terminal.
- Run
lsb_release -ato display the distributor ID, description, release number and codename when the command is available. - If that utility is missing, run
cat /etc/os-release. Look forVERSION_IDandVERSION_CODENAME. - Record whether the system is the main Ubuntu edition or a recognized flavor.
- Match that version to the official release list and read the standard-support, ESM and end-of-life columns separately.
On a managed fleet, record the numerical version, codename, edition, enabled repositories and whether Ubuntu Pro coverage is active. Those details prevent a codename from being mistaken for a complete support statement.
Which release type should you choose?
| Priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Stable servers, desktops kept for years, regulated or change-controlled environments | LTS | Five years of standard security maintenance creates a longer upgrade window. |
| Latest kernels, language versions or toolchains | Interim | The six-month cadence delivers newer components sooner, but only nine months of updates are provided. |
| Testing a new stack before adopting it broadly | Interim or a non-production test installation | It can expose newer software earlier; schedule the next upgrade before its lifecycle ends. |
| Keeping an older LTS system beyond standard maintenance | LTS with Ubuntu Pro ESM, and possibly Legacy | Optional tiers can extend security coverage when the release and packages qualify. |
For most long-lived installations, select an LTS release and treat the standard-support date as the first mandatory planning deadline. If the system must remain in service after that date, decide early whether an upgrade, replacement, Ubuntu Pro ESM or Legacy coverage meets your security and budget requirements.
Common mistakes about Ubuntu codenames and support
Mistake: treating the animal as a support indicator
“Noble,” “Resolute” and “Questing” are labels, not lifecycle categories. Check the LTS marker and version number.
Best Value
Mistake: reading 24.04 as a point release date
24.04 identifies April 2024, the initial release month. A value such as 24.04.5 is a later point release within that series.
Mistake: assuming every Ubuntu installation gets ten or 15 years automatically
Standard LTS maintenance, ESM and Legacy are separate tiers. ESM requires Ubuntu Pro, and Legacy is an additional paid option. Package and repository eligibility must be confirmed for the specific release.
Mistake: using an LTS date for a flavor
A flavor can have a different policy, often around three years for LTS editions, with exceptions. Read the flavor’s own documentation.
Recommended Free Tools
Mistake: confusing listed end of life with standard support
A lifecycle table may show an end date that includes extended coverage. Always distinguish the end of standard maintenance from the end of any ESM or Legacy period.
A practical lifecycle checklist
- Write down the full identifier: edition, version, codename and point-release number.
- Confirm whether the installation is LTS or interim.
- Find the standard-support end date for that exact release.
- Check whether the needed packages are in Main, Universe or another repository.
- For extended service, verify Ubuntu Pro enrollment, ESM eligibility and Legacy terms.
- If using a flavor, consult its separate lifecycle policy.
- Schedule testing and upgrades well before the support deadline, rather than waiting for the final month.
- Recheck Canonical’s release list before procurement, deployment or compliance sign-off because dates and plan terms are time-sensitive.
Why the distinction matters
The codename helps people communicate about a release, while the version number anchors it to a calendar date. Support policy determines whether security fixes continue to arrive and how soon an administrator must upgrade. Keeping those roles separate prevents a familiar animal name from creating a false sense of protection and makes lifecycle planning auditable.
