An NPU (neural processing unit) is a processor designed to accelerate supported artificial-intelligence tasks. It works alongside the CPU and GPU rather than replacing either one. You notice its value only when your operating system or applications are programmed to send a compatible AI workload to it. For ordinary software without local AI features, an NPU may make little visible difference.
What an NPU is
A neural processing unit is dedicated hardware for the repeated mathematical operations used by many neural-network models. Those operations include running an already-trained model to classify, translate, enhance or generate data. This is usually called inference. An NPU is optimized for those supported operations so the laptop can handle them on the device instead of sending every request to a remote server.

The NPU is one resource in a heterogeneous processor platform. The CPU remains the flexible, general-purpose processor that runs the operating system, application logic and tasks that do not fit a specialized accelerator. The GPU is optimized for graphics and can also process highly parallel computing workloads, including some AI operations. The NPU targets a narrower set of neural-network operations, often with an emphasis on efficient, sustained execution.
Microsoft Learn describes the NPU as “a new hardware resource.” That wording is important: the NPU does nothing simply because it exists. Software has to recognize the hardware, support the relevant model and operations, and explicitly dispatch work to it.

How the CPU, GPU and NPU divide work
| Processor | Primary role | Typical AI relationship |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | General-purpose computing, operating-system services and application control | Runs logic, unsupported operations and coordination; can execute AI workloads when software chooses or requires it |
| GPU | Graphics rendering and highly parallel computation | Accelerates graphics and some AI or compute workloads, especially those that benefit from broad parallelism |
| NPU | Supported neural-network operations | Accelerates selected on-device AI inference when the application and model are written to use it |
In a video-call effect, for example, the camera stream may be captured and managed by the CPU, processed by an AI model on the NPU, and displayed through the GPU. The exact division depends on the operating system, drivers and application. A laptop does not automatically route every AI-looking task to the NPU.
What happens when software uses an NPU
- The application requests an AI operation. Examples include separating a person from a background, recognizing speech or translating spoken language.
- The software checks available hardware. Drivers and operating-system frameworks identify whether the laptop has a compatible NPU and whether required instructions are supported.
- The model is prepared for that hardware. A neural model may need a supported format, precision or set of operations. A model that cannot run on the NPU may be placed on the CPU or GPU instead.
- Work is partitioned. Some layers or stages can run on the NPU while other stages remain on the CPU or GPU. Data movement and unsupported operations can affect the result.
- The output returns to the application. The user sees a translated caption, an adjusted image or a camera effect without necessarily seeing which processor handled it.
This explains why two laptops with NPUs can behave differently. They may expose different instructions, drivers, memory arrangements, operating-system builds or application support. A model can also be updated so that a feature changes hardware requirements over time.
When an NPU matters
On-device AI features
An NPU matters most when a feature explicitly supports it. Microsoft identifies examples such as real-time translation, image generation, intelligent search and video-call effects including automatic framing. These are categories, not a promise that every laptop with an NPU includes every feature. The application, Windows release, language pack, account status and hardware configuration can all affect availability.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On-device processing can be useful when a feature needs low response time, works without a network connection, or should keep source data on the computer. Those are potential advantages of local inference; they do not guarantee a particular speed, privacy level or battery result for every implementation. Check how the specific application handles data and which hardware it supports.

Frequent camera, audio and communication processing
Automatic framing, background effects, eye-contact adjustments, noise reduction and speech processing can run continuously during a call. If the software uses the NPU, that work can be handled by the specialized resource while the CPU remains available for the meeting application and other tasks. Whether a particular effect uses the NPU is determined by the application and driver, not by the name of the effect.
Creative and productivity applications with local models
Image generation, transcription, summarization, search indexing and enhancement tools may benefit when their developers ship NPU-enabled models. The practical question is not whether an application advertises “AI,” but whether its documentation names NPU acceleration for the feature and operating-system version you use.
When an NPU may not matter
If your workload is web browsing, office documents, programming, conventional photo editing or games that do not invoke a local AI feature, the NPU may remain idle. The CPU and GPU still determine most of your experience in those workloads. An NPU also does not replace a strong GPU for demanding 3D rendering or a fast CPU for compilation and general application performance.
Recommended Free Tools
Even an AI application may not use the NPU. It could rely on a cloud service, support only CPU or GPU execution, require an unsupported model format, or reserve NPU support for one feature but not another. A laptop can therefore have an NPU with no measurable benefit in your current software.

Copilot+ PC requirements and what 40 TOPS means
Microsoft’s 2025 Copilot+ PC explainer lists a minimum NPU capability of 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), together with at least 16 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD and Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer. These are Microsoft’s platform requirements for Copilot+ PC eligibility as stated on that page, not universal requirements for every laptop NPU or every AI application.
| Requirement listed by Microsoft | Minimum stated value | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| NPU capability | At least 40 TOPS | A threshold for the Copilot+ PC category; it is not a complete laptop-performance rating |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | System memory required by the cited platform specification |
| Storage | 256 GB SSD | Solid-state storage capacity required by the cited platform specification |
| Operating system | Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer | The Windows release requirement stated in the explainer |
TOPS counts operations per second under the measurement definition used by the platform or chip vendor. It does not describe CPU speed, GPU performance, memory bandwidth, application compatibility, thermals or battery endurance. Two NPUs with similar TOPS figures can deliver different results because their supported data types, software stacks and models differ.
Microsoft also cautions that Copilot+ feature availability varies by device, region and over time. Requirements and supported features can change with Windows releases, so verify the current specification for the exact model and country before buying.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How to decide whether you need an NPU
- Name the feature, not just the AI label. Write down the exact function you want: live translation, a camera effect, local image generation or another task.
- Check the application’s hardware documentation. Look for explicit NPU support, the supported operating-system version and any model, language or account restrictions.
- Confirm that processing is local. A cloud feature may work on a laptop without an NPU because the model runs on a remote server.
- Check the complete laptop configuration. Compare CPU and GPU performance, RAM, SSD capacity, display, ports, weight and cooling for your main workload.
- Verify the platform requirements. For Copilot+ features, confirm the NPU TOPS threshold, Windows 11 version, memory and storage requirements for the specific configuration.
- Consider your ownership period. Ask whether the manufacturer supplies driver and firmware updates and whether the applications you expect to use are likely to maintain support for that NPU.
How to verify NPU support after purchase
Start with the laptop manufacturer’s specification for the exact processor configuration, then check Windows’ current system information and the application’s own settings or documentation. An NPU listed in a specification does not prove that a feature is enabled. In a supported application, look for an acceleration, processing-device or performance setting and confirm that the installed driver meets the application’s requirements.

If a feature is missing, check Windows Update and the manufacturer’s chipset or graphics-driver page, then restart the application. Confirm that the device is in the correct region, that required language or model packages are installed, and that the feature has not been limited to a newer Windows release. If the application still does not list NPU use, it may simply support CPU, GPU or cloud processing instead.
Common buying mistakes
- Choosing by TOPS alone: TOPS is a threshold or throughput figure, not an overall performance score.
- Assuming every AI feature is local: Many services send work to the cloud, while others use only the CPU or GPU.
- Assuming every NPU has the same support: Hardware instructions, drivers, models and application frameworks vary.
- Expecting a guaranteed battery increase: The available documentation describes efficiency as an intended benefit but does not establish one universal battery-life improvement.
- Ignoring non-AI requirements: Insufficient RAM, storage, CPU performance or GPU capability can bottleneck your work even when the NPU meets a platform threshold.
- Treating a category label as a feature list: Copilot+ PC availability differs by device, region and software release.
What to expect over the life of the laptop
NPU usefulness is software-dependent and can grow as developers add local models, but future support is not guaranteed. Operating-system updates can introduce, change or restrict features, and a model that works on one hardware generation may require instructions absent from another. Keep drivers and Windows current, while checking release notes before assuming a new feature will run locally.
The durable buying principle is to select the laptop for your real workload first. If a documented application you use today requires or benefits from NPU acceleration, the NPU is a meaningful part of the specification. If no such application exists in your workflow, prioritize CPU, GPU, memory, storage, display quality and portability; the NPU can remain a secondary, future-facing capability.
