A 500 MW data center describes an electrical power demand or capacity, not a fixed amount of annual electricity. At a constant 500 MW, the site would use 500 MWh in one hour, 12 GWh in 24 hours, or 4,380 GWh over a 365-day year. Those are arithmetic results at full load; actual consumption depends on the facility’s load profile and on whether the 500 MW figure covers information-technology (IT) equipment, the entire building, or the site’s grid connection.
What 500 MW means in a data center
Megawatts (MW) measure power: the rate at which electricity is being delivered or consumed at a particular moment. Megawatt-hours (MWh) measure energy: the amount consumed over a period. Confusing the two is the source of most misleading answers about very large data centers.

The basic relationship is:
Energy (MWh) = Power (MW) × time (hours)
Therefore, a facility drawing exactly 500 MW for one hour consumes 500 MWh. If it maintained that draw for a full day, it would consume 12,000 MWh, or 12 GWh. Continuous full-load operation for 365 days would total 4,380 GWh. A 500 MW rating does not prove that the facility operates at that level every hour; it may be a peak, a contracted limit, a planned build-out, or a maximum import capability.
| Assumption | Arithmetic energy use | What the figure does and does not show |
|---|---|---|
| 500 MW for 1 hour | 500 MWh | One hour at the stated load |
| 500 MW for 24 hours | 12 GWh | A full day at continuous full load |
| 500 MW for 365 days | 4,380 GWh | A theoretical year at continuous full load, not a measured annual total |
First identify what the 500 MW boundary includes
Two facilities can both advertise “500 MW” while describing different electrical quantities. Before comparing them, determine the measurement boundary.

IT equipment power
An IT-load figure covers servers, storage, networking and related equipment that perform computing work. It excludes cooling, power conversion, lighting and other building systems. A 500 MW IT load would be smaller than a 500 MW total-facility load because the building must supply additional infrastructure energy.
Total facility demand
Total facility demand includes the IT load plus cooling systems, chillers or other heat-rejection equipment, UPS losses, switchgear, transformers, pumps, lighting and support systems. This is the quantity most relevant to the electricity meter serving the site, but the exact boundary should still be stated.
Utility connection or import capacity
A utility interconnection or import number describes how much power the site can receive from the grid. It may be higher than the load currently installed or operating. A connection sized for 500 MW therefore does not establish that 500 MW of servers are running, or even that the entire electrical capacity has been built.

How data-center capacity is measured
A credible capacity statement identifies the electrical point being measured, the time basis and the operating status. Engineers may use revenue meters, switchgear meters, UPS output meters, power-distribution-unit (PDU) meters and equipment telemetry, depending on the boundary.

Instantaneous, peak and average values
- Instantaneous power: the draw at a particular moment, usually reported in MW.
- Peak demand: the highest draw during a defined interval, such as a billing period.
- Average power: energy consumed during a period divided by the length of that period.
- Energy consumption: the accumulated MWh or GWh over a stated interval.
For a changing load, annual energy is the integral of the power curve over the year. A simple multiplication of 500 MW by 8,760 hours is valid only when 500 MW is actually maintained continuously. If the average load is 300 MW, for example, annual energy would be 2,628 GWh under a 365-day year; that is a calculation from the stated average, not a claim about a particular facility.
Capacity, utilization and redundancy
Installed electrical capacity can exceed the power used by live workloads. Spare electrical paths, backup generation, cooling headroom and redundant equipment are designed to preserve service during maintenance or failures. Consequently, a site can have a 500 MW design or connection capacity while operating below it for reliability, construction or workload reasons. Any comparison should state whether redundant capacity is included and whether the number refers to one building, a campus or a future build-out.
Using PUE to separate IT energy from building energy
Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) compares total data-center energy with IT-equipment energy. The European Union’s delegated regulation defines it as:
PUE = EDC ÷ EIT
EDC is total data-center energy and EIT is energy delivered to IT equipment. A PUE of 1.0 would mean no additional facility energy, which is not achievable in a functioning site; higher values indicate more overhead relative to the IT load.
The regulation specifies measuring combined annual IT energy at the UPS connections serving IT equipment. For installations without a UPS, including some direct-current designs, it allows specified alternatives such as measurement at a PDU connected to IT equipment. The reporting period and the exact points included must accompany a PUE value; otherwise two apparently similar figures may use different boundaries.

An illustrative PUE calculation
If 500 MW refers to IT power and a facility has a PUE of 1.2 during the same interval, the corresponding total facility demand would be 600 MW (500 × 1.2). If 500 MW instead refers to total facility demand, the implied IT power at PUE 1.2 would be about 416.7 MW (500 ÷ 1.2). These are illustrations showing why the boundary must be identified, not measurements of a named site.
How many homes can 500 MW power?
EPRI describes hyperscale data centers in a broad 100–1,000 MW range and gives an approximate household-equivalence range of 80,000–800,000 homes. A proportional midpoint calculation places 500 MW at roughly 400,000 homes under the same assumptions.
That comparison is illustrative rather than a universal conversion. Household electricity use changes with climate, appliances, building type, income, season and geography. It also compares a data center’s potential power draw with household demand; a data center does not literally distribute that electricity to those homes. For a more meaningful comparison, specify whether you are comparing peak power, average power or annual energy and use a household baseline from the same region and period.
What 500 MW means over a day or a year
Time and load factor determine the real energy requirement. At a 50% average load, a nominal 500 MW facility would average 250 MW and consume 2,190 GWh in a 365-day year. At a 70% average load, it would consume 3,066 GWh. These examples demonstrate the calculation; they are not estimates for every 500 MW campus.
When an operator publishes annual energy, check whether the number is metered consumption, an estimate, or a theoretical maximum. Also check whether the year has 365 or 366 days and whether the stated MW is IT-only or includes the facility overhead captured by PUE.

Does 500 MW tell you how many servers or how much AI compute is inside?
No. There is no universal conversion from MW to server count, processor count or computing throughput. The result depends on the equipment mix, processor and accelerator generations, memory and storage, utilization, networking, cooling technology, power-conversion losses and redundancy strategy.
Two sites with the same total demand can deliver very different compute output. One may run dense accelerator clusters at high utilization; another may operate general-purpose servers, storage or test systems with a different utilization pattern. A capacity claim should therefore be paired with an IT boundary, workload description and utilization data before anyone infers computing capability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a 500 MW site matters to the electric grid
The U.S. Department of Energy describes data-center demand as rapidly growing, regionally variable and often geographically constrained. Facilities commonly require firm power continuously, so the challenge is not simply finding 500 MW of occasional generation. The local transmission system, substations, interconnection queue, fuel or renewable resources, backup arrangements, reliability standards and construction schedule all affect whether the load can be served.
A headline MW figure alone cannot establish the impact on a particular region. A new site may require transmission upgrades, a new substation or additional generation, while a phased project may add load over several years. The same nominal capacity can have different consequences depending on the existing grid and the site’s ramp-up schedule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsEfficiency, flexibility and storage
DOE identifies energy efficiency, demand flexibility, storage and multiple generation resources as tools for meeting data-center demand while considering reliability and affordability. The European Commission has likewise noted that facilities able to adjust electricity use to grid conditions could help reduce system costs, improve stability and support renewable integration.
Best Value
That policy observation does not prove that a particular 500 MW facility can curtail load or provide grid services. Flexibility depends on workload scheduling, contractual limits, backup systems, storage duration, control systems and the operator’s willingness to change consumption.
How national data-center totals put 500 MW in context
The Department of Energy’s December 20, 2024 announcement of a Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory report states that U.S. data centers used 176 TWh in 2023. The same announcement gives an estimated national range of 325–580 TWh for 2028.
Those are annual U.S. totals, not the load profile of one campus. A 500 MW site running at full load for a year would use 4.38 TWh, which is a small fraction of the national totals; a site running below full load would use less. The comparison is useful for scale only and should not be read as a forecast for an individual project.

A reliable checklist for comparing two 500 MW claims
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What boundary is used? | IT load, total facility demand and grid import capacity are different quantities. |
| Is the number peak, average or instantaneous? | Power does not reveal annual energy without a time basis and load profile. |
| Is the capacity planned, connected or observed? | Future, contracted and metered values should not be treated as equivalent. |
| What PUE and measurement period are reported? | PUE shows overhead only when its boundary and period are clear. |
| How is redundancy handled? | Spare electrical and cooling capacity can make design capacity larger than operating demand. |
| What household baseline is used? | Geography and annual household consumption change the comparison. |
| What is the local grid context? | Transmission limits, firm supply and phased construction determine real system effects. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling 500 MW an annual amount: use MWh or GWh for energy and state the duration.
- Assuming full-load operation: label full-load arithmetic as a theoretical maximum unless metered data supports it.
- Mixing IT and facility figures: report the boundary and use PUE when converting between them.
- Turning household equivalence into a fixed fact: identify the EPRI range and describe the 400,000-home figure as proportional arithmetic.
- Inferring compute capacity: require workload, equipment and utilization information; MW alone is insufficient.
- Using national totals as a site forecast: keep the 176 TWh and 325–580 TWh figures in their U.S.-wide annual context.
- Ignoring the time basis in comparisons: compare peak with peak, average with average and annual energy with annual energy.
The practical answer
A 500 MW data center is best understood as a very large electrical load whose meaning depends on its boundary and operating profile. At a steady 500 MW, the arithmetic is 500 MWh per hour, 12 GWh per day and 4,380 GWh per 365-day year. EPRI’s broad hyperscale comparison suggests roughly 400,000 homes, but only as an assumption-dependent illustration. To measure and compare capacity responsibly, identify the electrical boundary, state the time basis, report PUE with its measurement point and period, and distinguish planned or connected capacity from observed consumption.
