A 5-sigma result means an observed excess is five standard deviations above the background expected if the null hypothesis were true. For a one-sided Gaussian test, that corresponds to a p-value of about 2.87 × 10−7 (2.87 × 10−5 percent), commonly described by CERN as roughly one chance in 3.5 million for a background fluctuation at least that large.
Particle physicists traditionally require this threshold before calling a new-particle signal a discovery. It is a statement about how unusual the data would be under a specified background model—not the probability that the particle exists, and not absolute certainty.

What “sigma” measures
Sigma (σ) is the symbol for a standard deviation, a measure of spread in a probability distribution. ATLAS explains that physicists use standard-deviation units to describe how unusual data would be if a hypothesis were true. The larger the sigma value, the less compatible the data are with that hypothesis.

In a particle-physics search, the hypothesis being tested is usually called the null hypothesis. It might state that only known processes and detector backgrounds are present. The alternative hypothesis adds a possible signal, such as a new particle. Researchers choose a test statistic that summarizes how signal-like the data are, then calculate how often a background-only experiment would produce a value at least as extreme.

That tail probability is the p-value. A 5-sigma claim therefore means: assuming the null model and the analysis procedure are correct, a fluctuation at least as signal-like as the observed one would be extraordinarily rare.
The numerical meaning of five sigma
For a one-sided standard-normal distribution, a Z value of 5 has a tail probability of approximately 2.87 × 10−7. Expressed as a percentage, that is about 2.87 × 10−5 percent. CERN’s educational material rounds the same scale to 3 × 10−5 percent, or approximately one chance in 3.5 million.
| Expression | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 5σ or Z = 5 | The measured excess is five standard deviations above the background expectation in the chosen test statistic. |
| p ≈ 2.87 × 10−7 | Under the null model, the probability of a fluctuation at least this extreme in a one-sided Gaussian interpretation. |
| 2.87 × 10−5% | The same p-value written as a percentage. |
| About 1 in 3.5 million | CERN’s reader-friendly rounding of the same one-sided fluctuation probability. |
The conversion assumes a one-sided Gaussian tail. Particle-physics analyses can use more complicated likelihood models, nuisance parameters and non-Gaussian test statistics, so the quoted sigma is the significance assigned by the actual analysis, not a claim that every aspect of the experiment follows a perfect bell curve.
How a significance is obtained
- Specify the null model. Analysts define the known processes, detector response and other backgrounds that would be present without the proposed signal.
- Choose the signal-sensitive measurement. This can involve an invariant-mass distribution, event count, multivariate score or a combination of several distributions.
- Fit the data and account for uncertainties. The fit includes statistical fluctuations and nuisance parameters representing detector calibration, efficiencies, background rates and other systematic effects.
- Calculate a test statistic. The statistic quantifies how far the data move away from what the background-only model predicts.
- Evaluate the tail under the null. The analysis determines how frequently background-only data would produce a test-statistic value at least as large as the observed value.
- Convert the tail probability to sigma. The p-value is mapped to the equivalent standard-normal Z value. A result at or above Z = 5 is described as 5-sigma or greater.
This procedure makes the conditioning explicit: the probability is calculated with the null hypothesis assumed. It is not obtained by assigning probabilities directly to competing hypotheses.

Why five sigma is the discovery convention
Particle-physics experiments examine enormous event samples and many possible masses, decay modes, kinematic regions and analysis choices. If enough opportunities are searched, an ordinary random fluctuation will eventually look impressive somewhere. Requiring a very small tail probability helps keep false discovery claims rare across a field with many tests.
ATLAS describes five-sigma significance as the traditional requirement for claiming discovery of a new particle. CERN’s educational explanation likewise notes that particle-physics journals use the five-sigma standard for discovery claims. Results near three sigma are commonly described as evidence, while the five-sigma convention marks the stronger discovery category.
The threshold is a community standard, not a law of nature. It balances the cost of announcing a false particle against the cost of waiting for more data. A lower threshold would produce more premature claims; a higher one would delay credible discoveries. The convention also encourages analysts to examine systematic effects, alternative explanations and independent data before making a headline announcement.

What happened with the Higgs boson
On 4 July 2012, CERN announced that the ATLAS and CMS experiments had reached the five-sigma threshold for a new particle consistent with the long-sought Higgs boson. The experiments did not observe an intact Higgs traveling through the detector: the particle decays almost immediately. Instead, they reconstructed its presence from characteristic combinations of decay products and looked for an excess over known backgrounds.

Each experiment studied several decay channels. Combining channels and the accumulated collider data increased the sensitivity enough for the excess to cross the discovery threshold. ATLAS and CMS were independent detectors with separate analyses, so agreement between them supplied an important check that the pattern was not an artifact of one detector, one calibration or one analysis implementation.
What a 5-sigma result does not tell you
It is not the probability that the null hypothesis is true
A p-value of roughly 2.87 × 10−7 does not mean there is a 0.0000287 percent chance that the background-only hypothesis is correct. The calculation starts by assuming that hypothesis and asks how surprising the data would be under it. To obtain a probability for competing hypotheses, one would need a different framework, such as a Bayesian model with explicit prior assumptions. A sigma value alone does not provide that posterior probability.
It is not absolute certainty
CERN’s educational material emphasizes that even 5-sigma significance cannot make scientific knowledge absolutely certain. The result can still be affected by an incomplete background model, an unrecognized detector effect, an analysis bias or a systematic uncertainty that was estimated incorrectly. The claim is exceptionally strong conditional evidence, not logical proof.

“Five sigma” describes the final significance after the analysis has incorporated its uncertainty model. Statistical uncertainty comes from the finite number of events. Systematic uncertainty comes from effects such as calibration, reconstruction efficiency, theoretical background predictions and modeling choices. A large data set can reduce statistical uncertainty while leaving an important systematic component. The quoted significance is therefore conditional on how those effects were represented and constrained.

It may describe only a local excess
A local significance evaluates the fluctuation at a particular location, such as one hypothesized mass. If an analysis scans a wide mass range or many categories, it has many chances to find a local upward fluctuation. The global significance includes that search over alternatives. Because it accounts for the look-elsewhere effect, the global p-value is generally larger and the corresponding significance lower than the local value.
A report that says “5 sigma” should therefore be read alongside the question: is this local or global? A local 5-sigma bump can fall below 5 sigma globally if the search examined enough independent or partly independent places. Conversely, a result quoted as a discovery-level global significance has already included the stated search scope.

When comparing two particle-physics results, check the following dimensions rather than ranking the sigma numbers blindly:
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Local or global? | Global significance includes the look-elsewhere effect from scanning masses, channels or other possibilities; local significance may not. |
| Statistical or systematic uncertainty? | The balance shows whether more events are likely to help or whether detector and modeling limitations dominate. |
| One channel or combined channels? | A combined result can gain sensitivity, but correlations and shared uncertainties must be modeled correctly. |
| One experiment or independent replication? | Agreement from separate detectors or data sets makes an experiment-specific artifact less plausible. |
| Evidence or discovery? | A result near three sigma is commonly called evidence; the traditional discovery label requires at least five sigma. |
These distinctions are essential when a press release gives a single headline number without the surrounding analysis details.
Best Value
Does five sigma prove that a new particle exists?
No. It provides very strong evidence that the observed pattern is unlikely to be produced by the specified background-only model. Calling the pattern a new particle also requires showing that the signal has properties consistent with a particle interpretation, that alternative known processes have been addressed, and that detector and analysis checks do not explain it.
Independent confirmation is especially valuable. In the Higgs case, the ATLAS and CMS results provided separate observations, and the signal appeared in multiple decay channels. Follow-up measurements of the particle’s mass, production rates, spin-related properties and couplings then tested whether the new state behaved as expected for the Higgs boson.
Common misunderstandings about “99.9999 percent”
People sometimes turn the one-sided p-value into a statement such as “the discovery is 99.9999 percent certain.” Numerically, one minus the 5-sigma p-value is about 99.9999713 percent, but that subtraction still describes the rarity of data under the null model. It does not become a probability that the alternative hypothesis is true merely because it is written as a percentage.

A practical checklist for interpreting a 5-sigma claim
- Identify the null hypothesis and the exact signal being tested.
- Check whether the quoted significance is one-sided and whether it is local or global.
- Look for the statistical and systematic uncertainty breakdown.
- Ask how many channels, categories and mass points were examined.
- Check whether the result was reproduced by an independent experiment or later data set.
- Distinguish the significance claim from measurements of the signal’s properties.
- Read “discovery” as a conventionally defined level of evidence, not as absolute certainty.
Bottom line for readers
Five sigma is an exceptionally small background-fluctuation probability: about 1 in 3.5 million under the stated null model, using the one-sided Gaussian convention. That is why particle physicists traditionally use it for discovery claims. The number is powerful only when its assumptions, search scope, systematic uncertainties and independent checks are understood; by itself, it is neither a probability that the new particle is real nor a guarantee that every interpretation is correct.
