The ratio describes shape, not physical size. A 6-inch 16:9 display, for example, is approximately 2.94 inches wide by 5.23 inches high, before rounded corners and without counting the phone’s bezel or frame.
To compare screens fairly, use the diagonal and aspect ratio together—or compare the manufacturer’s stated active width and height. Two displays can both measure 6 inches diagonally while having noticeably different widths, heights and video behavior.

What “16:9” means on a phone
An aspect ratio expresses the relationship between a rectangle’s width and height. In landscape orientation, a 16:9 display is 16 units wide for every 9 units high. Rotate that same rectangle into portrait and the dimensions become 9 units wide by 16 units high.

The ratio does not say whether the screen is 4 inches, 6 inches or 10 inches diagonally. It only fixes the proportions. A small 16:9 panel and a large 16:9 panel have the same shape but different physical dimensions.

How the shape looks in portrait
Imagine dividing the portrait display into a grid 9 squares across and 16 squares down. It is taller than it is wide, but not as narrow as many modern phone screens. A 20:9 display, for example, has 9 units across and 20 units down in portrait, so it extends farther vertically for roughly the same width.
Another useful mental picture is to place two screens on a table with their bottom edges aligned. If both have the same diagonal, the 16:9 rectangle reaches farther to each side, while the 20:9 rectangle reaches farther upward. Neither is universally “bigger”; each dimension is being traded for the other.
Screen corners may be rounded, and manufacturers can describe the panel using slightly different measurement conventions. The ratio therefore describes the underlying rectangle; the visible corner-to-corner area can be a little smaller than an ideal sharp-corner rectangle.
How to calculate the actual width and height
If you know a screen’s diagonal and aspect ratio, you can calculate the sides with the Pythagorean theorem. For a portrait display whose ratio is 9:16 and whose diagonal is d:
width = d × 9 / √337height = d × 16 / √337
The number 337 comes from 9² + 16². The diagonal is the hypotenuse of the screen rectangle, so the calculation scales both sides to the stated diagonal.
To see why the formula works, treat the ratio numbers as an unscaled rectangle. Its diagonal is √(9² + 16²) = √337 units. Dividing each side by that diagonal gives the fraction of the real diagonal represented by the width and height; multiplying by the advertised diagonal converts those fractions into inches or centimetres.
Examples for common diagonal measurements
| Diagonal | Approximate portrait width | Approximate portrait height |
|---|---|---|
| 5 inches | 2.45 inches | 4.36 inches |
| 5.5 inches | 2.70 inches | 4.79 inches |
| 6 inches | 2.94 inches | 5.23 inches |
| 6.5 inches | 3.19 inches | 5.66 inches |
| 7 inches | 3.43 inches | 6.10 inches |
These are geometric results for a perfect 16:9 rectangle, not measurements of particular phones. A real panel can differ slightly because of corner radii, measurement standards and the way a manufacturer defines the active display boundary.
Working backward from measured sides
If a manufacturer gives you active width and height, calculate the ratio by dividing both numbers by the same factor. For example, a rectangle measuring 9 units by 16 units is 9:16 in portrait, or 16:9 in landscape. You can also calculate the diagonal as √(width² + height²) and compare it with the advertised diagonal.

For a ratio written as a:b in portrait, the general formulas are width = d × a / √(a² + b²) and height = d × b / √(a² + b²). Use the portrait order consistently: write a tall 20:9 phone as 9:20 for this calculation. If a listing gives 20:9 in the usual landscape-style order, swap the numbers before calculating portrait dimensions.
Why diagonal size alone is misleading
The diagonal is one line across the display, not its width or usable area. Changing the aspect ratio changes how that same-length diagonal is distributed between the two sides.
Six inches at different ratios
| Display ratio in portrait | Approximate width | Approximate height | Shape compared with 16:9 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9:16 | 2.94 inches | 5.23 inches | Baseline 16:9 shape |
| 9:19.5 | 2.51 inches | 5.45 inches | Narrower and slightly taller |
| 9:20 | 2.46 inches | 5.47 inches | Narrower and slightly taller |
Thus, a 6-inch 16:9 screen does not look as wide as a 6-inch “tall phone” screen. It is wider and a little shorter when both are compared in portrait at the same diagonal. Conversely, the taller ratio gives more vertical length but less width.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe same trade-off affects the rectangle’s area. Using the calculated sides, a 6-inch 16:9 panel is about 15.4 square inches of ideal rectangular area, while a 6-inch 20:9 panel is about 13.5 square inches. These are mathematical panel areas, not promises about visible pixels or the complete phone, and rounded corners reduce the real active area slightly.
These calculations describe the active display only. They do not predict how wide the phone feels in your hand. Bezels, a camera housing, curved edges and the frame can make the handset substantially wider or taller than the panel.
Current phone examples: 20:9 and 19.5:9
Google’s official Pixel hardware specifications list the Pixel 9 series with a 20:9 display ratio and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold cover display with a 19.5:9 ratio. Those examples illustrate the direction of current phone design: both are taller and narrower in portrait than 16:9. They are examples, not a complete inventory of every phone sold worldwide. See the specifications at Google Pixel phone hardware tech specs.
When a specification says 20:9, check whether it refers to the active panel and whether the ratio is rounded. For a purchase or engineering decision, the manufacturer’s stated width and height are more useful than treating a rounded ratio as an exact physical measurement.
A ratio also does not identify the panel technology, brightness, refresh rate or resolution. Two phones can share 20:9 while differing greatly in those characteristics. Keep the shape comparison focused on width, height and the content you intend to view.

Keep four different measurements separate
Many apparent screen-size disagreements come from mixing measurements that answer different questions.
| Measurement | What it tells you | What it does not tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Physical display aspect ratio | The panel’s width-to-height shape, such as 16:9 or 20:9 | The diagonal or the phone’s external dimensions |
| Active display width and height | The approximate physical viewing rectangle | How much bezel or frame surrounds it |
| Diagonal | The corner-to-corner length of the display rectangle | Its width and height without the aspect ratio |
| Pixel resolution | How many image pixels the panel contains | Physical inches or the panel’s shape by itself |
| Logical app area | The coordinate space an operating system exposes to software | The physical dimensions of the panel |
| Handset body dimensions | How large the complete phone is to hold or carry | The exact active display area |
Pixels and points are not inches
Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines show that iPhone layouts can be described in both points and pixels. Points are logical layout units; pixels are physical image samples. Neither unit is an inch measurement. Use the device’s physical display dimensions when you need to estimate viewing width, and use points or pixels when you are designing an interface. Apple’s reference is available in Human Interface Guidelines: Layout.
Resolution can also be written in an order that follows the current orientation or the panel’s native orientation. A number such as 2,400 × 1,080 is not automatically a 20:9 physical measurement unless those pixels map to the full active rectangle. Software may reserve pixels for system areas, and a foldable may list separate cover and inner displays.

How 16:9 video fits on a taller phone
A 16:9 video naturally matches a 16:9 display rectangle. The image can fill the screen without geometric distortion or cropping, assuming the player preserves the video’s aspect ratio.
On a taller 19.5:9 or 20:9 panel, the player has to choose how to handle the mismatch:
- Fit the entire frame: The complete 16:9 image remains visible, with unused display area above and below it in portrait or in the relevant orientation.
- Enlarge to fill: The image occupies more of the display, but portions of the left and right edges (or the top and bottom, depending on orientation) can be cropped.
- Stretch: The player changes the geometry, making people or objects look wider or taller. Well-designed players generally avoid this option.
The result depends on the video player, the video’s own aspect ratio and its fit or full-screen setting. A taller phone does not automatically crop every 16:9 video, and a 16:9 panel does not guarantee that every video fills the screen; content can be produced in many ratios.
Orientation matters here too. A 16:9 source viewed in landscape is already aligned with a 16:9 panel, but a portrait phone may show the same source with controls, system bars or unused space around it. A player’s “fill,” “fit,” zoom or full-screen command can change the result without changing the panel’s physical ratio.
Per-app compatibility settings
An LG G8 ThinQ user guide documents a per-application “Compatibility (16:9)” display option. That setting shows that some devices can apply app-specific scaling or framing, but it is not a universal Android feature and should not be expected on every phone. The option and its behavior are described in the LG G8 ThinQ user guide.

Physical display ratio versus the app’s logical area
Software may not receive the same rectangle that you see at the glass. Operating-system compatibility rules define the logical display area reported to applications, including how unusual or very tall shapes are handled.
“While there is no restriction to the screen aspect ratio value of the physical screen display, the screen aspect ratio of the logical display that third-party apps are rendered within, as can be derived from the height and width values reported through the
view.DisplayAPIs and Configuration API, MUST meet the following requirements:”
This statement is a platform requirement about the dimensions exposed to third-party apps. It is not a claim that every physical phone panel is 16:9, nor does it turn a logical coordinate space into a measurement in inches. The full Android 9 document is available from the Android Open Source Project.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A reliable method for comparing two phones
Use the following process whenever two phones have different ratios or when a listing gives only a diagonal.
- Define the use case. Decide whether you care about portrait reading, landscape gaming, 16:9 video, one-handed reach or the complete handset in a pocket. The best comparison measure changes with the question.
- Record the ratio and diagonal. Write them together, such as 16:9 at 6 inches or 20:9 at 6 inches. A diagonal without a ratio is incomplete.
- Calculate estimated active sides. For portrait ratio
a:band diagonald, usewidth = d × a / √(a² + b²)andheight = d × b / √(a² + b²). For 16:9 in portrait,a=9andb=16. - Prefer published active dimensions when available. If the manufacturer provides width and height, use those values instead of assuming the advertised ratio is exact.
- Check the body dimensions separately. Compare the phone’s stated external width, height and thickness for grip, pocket fit and case compatibility. Do not substitute those numbers for display dimensions.
- Check software behavior for your content. Look for the player’s fit/full-screen controls and any device-specific per-app compatibility setting. Test whether the result is letterboxing, cropping or distortion.
- Account for measurement conventions. Confirm whether the diagonal is measured as a nominal rounded value, whether corners are included and whether a foldable listing refers to the cover or inner display.
Example decision
Suppose you are choosing between a 6-inch 16:9 panel and a 6-inch 20:9 panel. The first gives approximately 2.94 inches of portrait width and 5.23 inches of height; the second gives approximately 2.46 inches of width and 5.47 inches of height. Choose the 16:9 geometry when a wider rectangle or native 16:9 framing matters more. Choose the 20:9 geometry when a narrower body and extra vertical space suit your apps, provided the phone’s external dimensions also meet your comfort needs.
If the two diagonals are not equal, do not compare ratios in isolation. Calculate both sets of sides first. A larger diagonal can make a taller phone wider than a smaller 16:9 phone, while a smaller diagonal can still feel broad if its ratio is relatively short. The side-by-side numbers answer the practical question more directly than labels such as “compact” or “tall.”

Common comparison mistakes
- Assuming equal diagonals mean equal viewing width. The six-inch example shows why the ratio must accompany the diagonal.
- Calling a resolution an aspect ratio. A pixel count such as 2,400 × 1,080 describes samples; reduce those numbers to a ratio only after checking whether the full active area uses them.
- Comparing the glass with the handset body. A narrow bezel can make two phones with similarly sized panels feel different in hand.
- Ignoring orientation. “16:9” is commonly written in landscape order. In portrait, the same panel is 9:16.
- Assuming every app uses every physical pixel. Insets, cutouts, system bars and compatibility rules can reduce the logical area available to an application.
- Expecting one video rule to cover all content. The player, source video and selected fit mode determine whether you see empty space or cropping.
- Treating a rounded ratio as a measured guarantee. Ratios such as 19.5:9 and 20:9 are often specification conventions; published active dimensions provide a better check.
- Mixing cover and inner displays on a foldable. A foldable can have separate aspect ratios and diagonals, so identify which panel the specification describes.
- Using a screenshot as a physical template. A screenshot records digital coordinates, not the panel’s inch dimensions, and may include system bars or scaling.
What to remember
In portrait, a 16:9 phone screen is 9 units wide by 16 units high, making it wider and less vertically elongated than the 19.5:9 and 20:9 examples listed for current Pixel models. A 6-inch diagonal does not settle the comparison: at 16:9 it works out to about 2.94 by 5.23 inches, while taller ratios trade width for height. For a dependable choice, compare active width and height, the ratio-plus-diagonal pair, the handset body and the way your apps or videos handle the available shape.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 6-inch 16:9 screen look as wide as a 6-inch tall phone screen?
No. At the same 6-inch diagonal, a 16:9 panel is about 2.94 inches wide by 5.23 inches high in portrait. A 20:9 panel is about 2.46 inches wide by 5.47 inches high, so it is narrower and taller.
Is 16:9 the same as 9:16 on a phone?
They describe the same rectangle in different orientations. 16:9 is the usual landscape notation; in portrait, the width-to-height order is 9:16.
Can I compare two phones using only their diagonal measurements?
No. Add the aspect ratio, or use the manufacturer’s active width and height. The diagonal alone cannot reveal how wide or tall the display is.
Will a 16:9 video fill a 20:9 phone screen?
Not necessarily. Preserving the full frame can leave unused space, while enlarging to fill can crop edges. The player’s fit, zoom and full-screen settings control the result.
Are phone pixels or Apple points measurements in inches?
No. Pixels describe image samples and points describe logical layout units. Use physical display dimensions for inches and use pixels or points for image and interface design.
Does the display ratio tell me how large the phone feels in my hand?
No. Compare the handset’s external width, height and thickness separately. Bezels, frames, camera housings and curved edges can make the body larger than the active panel.
The Bottom Line
Think of 16:9 as a shape, not a size. Pair the ratio with the diagonal—or use published active width and height—to make a meaningful comparison. At the same diagonal, 16:9 is wider while 19.5:9 and 20:9 are taller and narrower; video and app behavior then depend on software scaling.
